Wow, this takes me back! I lived in the area until 1972 (I was a 'grammar grub' at the since-demolished Rowley Regis Grammar School in Hawes Lane) so remember it very well. So many memories here, where to start? I recall the quarry blastings that used to shake our house regularly way down in Summer Road;. Then there was the little track that ran from Turners Hill around the 'hole'. There was a bungalow there; one day it was empty and abandoned, shortly afterwards the road was blocked altogether - I understand the road fell into the quarry and I believe I spotted it briefly on the video a few minutes in on the left view looking towards Throne Road/Lion Farm. The most intriguing memory (concern?) I have is a tale my grannie told me when I was a kid about the gun emplacement on Turners Hill during the war, with all the ordnance concealed nearby. War over, ordnance never found. She swore until her death in '76 it's still buried there and anyone tossing down a careless fag-end would ignite half of Oakham! Three quarters of a century down the one and it hasn't gone off yet, so these days I don't worry so much about it.. Especially since I now live a good few miles away in the Welsh bordelands. A fascinating video; my appreciation to the compiler for a most interesting reminiscence of a place still close to my heart. You can take the kid out of the Black Country but ...'
I think there was 2 quarries at Rowley. One was tarmac and the other was ARC. I've hauled out of both and delivered sand into them for the marinis to make ashfelt or MTA. I was one of the first to start tipping off in the ARC quarry when it became a landfill site. The hole must've been filled by now.
