This is actually a sequel to a game called "Four Last Things" which came out in 2017 and a third (and apparently last game) has been announced by the developer. I'm really glad this series is getting some well deserved attention. As far as I can tell they're all made by one guy and I think the visuals, creativity and humour in these games are impeccable.
I have to say, I’m really happy to hear you enjoying a game, obviously with all the generic games + industry-abuse etc… it’s been hard to get excited for games, but I’m glad you really enjoyed this game and I’ll be sure to check it out.
Yep, It really nice to see :) Sadly my only experience with point and click games are the professor layton games which I don't really like Maybe I'll still check it out
You know, I feel like we need more reviews for games that are a couple of years old. Sometimes we all miss good games, and it's nice to have someone to say "Oi! Look at this fun game I found. Play it."
As a bonus, games with a couple of years on them are usually half the price or less of a new release - a bit easier for a working stiff to be picking up on a lark.
I’m late to the husband party, clearly, so belated congratulations on that. As for this game - you’ve convinced me to give it a go. I had initially dismissed it because the animation style (like that in Monty Python) just makes my skin crawl. Like it’s triggering some subconscious phobia. Never understood why.
i can accept it here because it seems to be "self-aware", but overall, yeah, never liked this animation style at all. it's freaky and i can't explain why.
Maybe it's because they just move parts instead of animating movement. Like it's a cut-out painting that moves by itself, weirdly smoothly but in an unnatural way (like how clothing doesn't bend with the movement). I get the same with a lot of doll animation.
It's so wierd it's a total win!! It's like Monty Python raided The Louvre... Ups... You mentioned them... P.S., it sounds really cute when you say "my husband" ❤️
The visual style and how it portrays the suffering that happened on those days via how the paintings that were made back then is enough to make me buy it on steam!
Haven't watched it yet, but I'm very suspicious of Jim's positive reviews. Edit: this is one of those rare times he liked a game for it's writing over gameplay. Bet I'd like this one.
Yet he still brings up all his Tumblrite self diagnosis problems. ADHD, dyslexia, memory problems. I half expected him to bring up his DID and explain his pink and black head canon alter egos fighting for control on different days. The overt positivity of the rest was a refreshing change.
I agree on the font. Sometimes (frequently, actually) the font washes out on the background if the two colors are too similar. Even meme generators have shadowed fonts so you can read them. Might be good for a patch. This game is ridiculous, though, and I may have to give it a go.
"As someone who really struggles with reading because ADD is getting out of control . . ." It's a kid thing, they said. You'll grow out of it, they said. It doesn't get worse, they said. They were wrong.
Bought it on steam. Worth it. Got all the achievements for it too. Totally worth it for the art an humour. I will note if you don't like point and click games, there's walkthroughs if you just want to blow through it all to see the humour.
This game is basically an embodiment of "Free use" as a concept. And also why public domain is so important. This would be impossible if rights to all of these pieces were still tied up, and out of public domain.
even now, here on the youtube countless random groups keep trying to claim public domain works as their own, abusing this site's system to have content removed or monetized in their favour. a lot of music labels have done it to me when all my music is 100% original, too, happens to folks all the time. gotta love AI that doesn't understand context monitoring & policing art in the modern era.
This very much looks like Four Last Things which had a near-identical art style. I really enjoyed that one so I'm definitely going to need to check this one out. Edit: for added info, Four Last Things is about a man trying to be forgiven for his sins so he journeys to a town in an attempt to take advantage of a cleric loophole. If he can commit each of the deadly sins in a single town, his entire moral slate will be wiped clean.
Sooo...was someone going to tell me James Stephanie Sterling had found themselves a husband, or was I going to have to watch them gush about a game they really enjoyed to find out? Also, glad to see they found a game worth gushing over. It's nice to find something shiny amidst the muck, methinks.
speaking of late then never. should of probably said this earlier but uhm thank you for coming out because it gave me the courage to face those questions I'd been avoiding since I was 12. Just wanted to say thanks for that.
I loved this game when it came out (and Four Last Things which I think is a prequel? Nope, just checked, it was legit released in 2017, I just played them in the wrong order). I agree 100% on the fonts (thought about making a video but I already have one on dyslexia fonts so...it seemed redundant), but I mean, it's still amazing! I was so excited when my notifications told me you had released this video talking about it (and that you loved it). Play Four Last Things if you want to continue the joy. Having played this one does not at all ruin that experience (to the point where I didn't know which came first).
I don't recall you mentioning a husband before, so congratulations! If this is a husband you've had for a while and I've just been inattentive, congratulations anyway, love is lovely :)
Great game. Nice and short too, for those of us with little spare time. My first playthrough I ended up just living up to the characters nature and stabbing everyone - soon learned that you can't really progress that way, despite the game not ending as a result. Had to start again.
I picked this up in a recent sale and i feckin' loved it. Laughed my tits off at times and the 'alternative' to solving puzzles for one of the endings was great fun!
Played the original game (Four Last Things) and it's the best Monty Python-em-up I've ever played. Got around to Procession to Calvary last year and it was even better. Now it's on Game Pass there's no excuse to not try it.
Calvary: 1 : an open-air representation of the crucifixion of Jesus. 2 : an experience of usually intense mental suffering. What an oddly specific word.
Visually, along with other elements like music, it gives me very strong Monty Python/Terry Gilliam vibes. You just mentioned it as I type. I might give this one a look, even though it's not my normal type of game. The humour could be enough to get me though. You tell us to make our own decisions but how can we when you've just told us what to do? ;-)
Love this game, and his previous game - Four Last Things - is just as good and just as criminally overlooked. I've done my best to write about these games and get people to give them a chance. Hopefully, many of your viewers will try them out now.
There is a really good swedish comic, using The same conceit of temporal localisation of old paintings to Great humorous effect: "Muralgranskaren", if that sounds interesting. If a translation is available and you enjoy this game, you'll have a Great time with it! Please take care Steph. Your videos and podcasts are absolutly Lovely!
Thanks for the recommendation, and since you mentioned it, thanks for recommending The Sexy Brutale many years ago. I love these kind of sorta-relaxing-but-actually-nerve-wracking kinda games.
I'm really glad you are talking about this game because I don't see enough folks doing it! I was so enraptured that I played until I cleared all the achievements and that's not something I ever feel compelled to do (ghost of Tsushima being the only other game). I first heard of this when Let's fight a Boss mentioned it and when it popped up on game pass I too could not resist.

I liked Four Last Things, didn't know it had a sequel and pending threequal. I look forward to playing this!
Loved them both ❤️

But seriously, I played this a while back, thanks to gamepass, and it's genuinely wonderful.
The visual style and how it portrays the suffering that happened on those days via how the paintings that were made back then is enough to make me buy it on steam!

This game is great and is such a gem to find on gamepass
have you played Four Last Things?
It's The Procession To Calvary, not Cavalry, but otherwise yes, the game is amazing (I played it on Gamepass, so even better).
Calvary is one of those words you only hear either from hyper-religious nutters, a streetname, or people who mispronounce cavalry

I'm so glad JSS discovered this gem! It truly is a fantastic game, as is its predecessor.
The literal art-style in this makes me think of the cutscenes in the Rock of Ages games.

I was considering playing this as the animation looks hilarious. After seeing this video, guaranteed I will play this now.
This game is basically an embodiment of "Free use" as a concept. And also why public domain is so important.
This would be impossible if rights to all of these pieces were still tied up, and out of public domain.
Give it time and I'm sure Disney will eventually own the rights to Heironymous Bosch's The Garden Of Earthly Delights.

I saw a friend play this on stream, had me in stitches. I can't wait to get round to playing it after getting it gifted for Christmas
It's been a while since you actually recommended anything, very happy to see this video this morning!
I thought this was some kind of Monty Python-esque inspired ad for like ten seconds before realizing this is an actual game
I love this game, I enjoy walking around slapping everyone in the face to see their responses.

Wow. It looks like an unholy mix of an Hieronymus bosch painting and a classic Monty Python sketch. Bloody love it!
I cant believe someone finally made a game that looks like the animated segments of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Absolute heroes
Looks like a classical art meme page on acid, so exactly my type of game
