Also, at exactly 7:46 a table facet appears to be cracked/chipped. Perhaps that is a reason for choosing to set the gem in reverse. It is an awful stone.

I too thought it was a mistake mounting the gem pavilion side-up. Actually it is a mistake as rings experience a lot of wear and the first thing I see happening in this case is: the culet will definitely get chipped off. The gem looks like a garnet-stones of which chip easily. Also, such an elaborate and high gold Karat weight-setting is wasted on such an insignificant stone. I would have gone with Red Spinel or Sapphire.

You are absolutely correct with the setting style, but whatever the customer wants, the customer gets so long as cash is in hand. That said, if this is a special occasion ring and wear and tear is not likely it is perfectly functional, so I personally would call it a "mistake". Now, whether or not I sign a piece of jewelry I make is up to me. It doesn't happen often but every now and then a design is so crazy or off the wall that I won't have any attachment to it.
