Of course there has to be (more than) one boo-boo in the video. In my rush to get it done, any of the images that say HSO palette are indeed SHO 😬 and yeah I said Siii and Oii filters which of course should be Sii and Oiii
Excellent astro rig. I installed a Pegasus Gen 2 Power Box advanced to eliminate multiple power supplies connected to my Jackery battery. I have one single USB 3 cable from the Pegasus to the ASI, and just one power brick, which really saves battery capacity.
Sounds like a great setup! I run a single DC cable from battery to the mount, then another single DC from mount to ASIAir. Have thought about running a seperate DC from battery to ASIAir but the above helps with cable management.
Hi Glenn, I really like your channel, you explain things in a very calm and reasoned way. I have almost the same setup, changing the telescope and guiding with an OAG-L which is wonderful. I congratulate you for your photos and your channel, keep it up.
Duuuude... those photos are absolutely bonkers. I just keep repeating to myself... "I don't need a new hobby. I don't need a new hobby. I don't need a new hobby."... You are making it difficult. Great video!
Great Video! In my mind the pier extension is to instable, i have the AM5 too with a Skywatcher 420/72, DSLR and i don't use it. With a ASI 2600 Duo, you would don't need a 2nd Guidescope ;-). Yesterday i have seen with a "ZWO FF" telescope you dont need a flattener, could be interesting too!
The pier extension for your setup would be fine and depending on how long your setup is might be essential - check my video on if the extension is worth it ua-cam.com/video/4OBCepl5TZw/v-deo.html I've been watching ZWO and their DUO and more recently the guide cam and integrated ASIAir into the main cam, I always feel a little nervous about too many componants being built into one because a single failure can take out your rig :( I'll check out that scope, thanks!
Great photos. At some point I can really recommend you get an 8” or 10” Newtonian for your mount and use it visually. If you haven’t done visual yet you will be amazed. It’s a whole different experience than looking at a screen. I have the am5 and an 8” with tele vue Delos 10mm eyepiece and by god it is pinpoint sharp it’s really like flying close to the moon and looking down on it. And the brightness of the moon is incredible.
Brilliant! I have almost exactly the same equipment as you, only my camera is the 533, first the color one and then I changed to the mono one. Luckily I didn't have tilt problems although I still have a tilter plate installed. Together with the AM5 they make a very good set! I use the 533MC with the Samyang 135mm f2, which also form a nice duo. Greetings from Argentina!!
Greetings! I would like a wider lens at some point, but unfortunatly I'm limited by rooflines where I normally shoot. The 430mm is the minimum I need to thread the needle on some targets
Perfect timing on this video I'm just about to drive to testar to grab the last bit of my kit the 2600mm and antlia filter set to go with my redcat61 and AM5. Nice to have my choices validated (I also just watched your filter install vid.) I'll be keen to see what longer scope you end up with that still worked with the AM5 and 2600 so please let us know. I'm now also considering an auto focuser I have heard mixed reviews but I also don't want to wake up ever few hours to refocus.
You can have my EAF when you can pry it from my cold dead hands 💀🤣 That redcat will be a little ripper. I cut from the video my musings about wanting to go wider but from where I shoot I wouildn't be able to thread the needle over roof lines.
Next winter I'll be trying to get somewhere Bortle 2 or better to do a bit of broadband shooting. It's doable from my normal Bortle 6 but the narrowband stuff goes so well I can't pull myself away from it
Thanks for that ☺ Pixinsight was the game changer for my processing (which is very UNscientific), just forced myself through the learning curve and watched lots of videos.
Great video. I picked up the 1x 68III flattener last year for my FLT91 and it has much better edge correction over the 0.8x reducer. You have to get an adapter with it as well to get the correct back focus. Not cheap. I bought an FLT120 this year from Testar and am still getting used to it. It uses the same flattener so it worked out a bit cheaper than the Esprit 120mm which comes with one included. Its a much heavier scope than the FLT91 and not as forgiving with balancing, polar alignment, guiding etc.. The extra focal length is nice at 780mm. I'm happy with the images it gives.
Really understand the HEQ6 weight. Im 70yo. Got tired of lugging all the gear in and out. I have been moving to smaller lighter scopes. I sold my Skywatcher Espirit 100ED and replaced it with a Askar 200mm lens, and a Askar 65mm SQA. I also use a Rokinon 135mm . Small , easy to travel with. Also your video on back lash was terrific. Clear skies. Mike
Nice setup. I am running the Antila LRGB filters also. Do you get any large halos around any of your stars with these filters, specifically the blue filter ?
Havn't had what I would call large halos, but I don't shoot a lot of broadband. I did just look at some Orion images and the blue channel stars are slightly bigger than green, and on the really big stars if I pixel peep I guess you could say there are small halos, but nothing that I've felt look bloated when viewed at normal resolution. I do understand some of the earlier Antlias may have had halo issues though.
Hi Glenn I have the Askar 65 PHQ as my first scope and bought the Askar 120 APO last year and it is awesome at 840mm f/l with 1x flattener I also have the AM5 EAF and ASI air plus some think for the price point the 120 APO is a really decent scope Cheers Simon
Nice video. I can highly recommend the Altair 115 EDTX with its premium optics. It is still my first telescope with Asiair, focuser and a 585mc camera and the 0.8 reducer
@@GlennMartinPhotography That is terrific, you have a good business opportunity then in Australia (as an importer marketeer) If you check also AstroBloke or similar, generally the Altair products get great reviews.
I have a WO GT71II scope with a 6AIII flattener. Now, I am also considering more millimeters/aperture and am I seriously eyeballing the Sky-Watcher Esprit 120ED APO what is a 840mm/f7 scope. Not doubting the Sharpstar scopes (Sharpstar/Askar/ZWO/...) but read a bit too many horror stories if support is needed. The upgrade you are looking for shall bring you to the Esprit 150 what will have a heftier price compared to the SharpStar (alike) scopes. Anyway, this was the first video I did see from you and like it, to the point, just the right length and not in love with your own voice :-) Cheers mate.
Great video! Can you help me understand how all the cabling works? The ASIAIR had 4 USB ports. It looks like hou have 6 devices controlled by the ASIAIR: mount, EAF, guide scope, filter wheel, camera, and your SD card reader. Can you help me understand how it all is connected?
So both the EAF and EFW go to the camera which has 2x USB2 and 1x USB3, so then a single USB3 from the camera to the ASIAir. And then of course, single USB from mount to ASIAir, single USB from guidescope to ASIAir, and lastly single USB from SD reader to ASIAir :-)
Great run through. I have the same camera, guide scope and similar guide cam on a similar mount. May I ask your ASIAir guide settings for Calibration steps, Max DEC Duration and Max RA Duration? Mine are 1100ms 400ms 400ms but I think these could be optimized with more adequate values.
Just fired up my AAP. Calibration is set to 2000 500 500 (which is weird as a screenshot from Feb this year shows 2000 2000 2000 - the firmware did update when I started the AAP just now so maybe that reset?), dither 5px every 3 shots, guiding rate 0.5X I can't see my aggression settings without running a session but another screenshot from Feb 24 has RA 60% and DEC 70%, and 1sec exposures.
@@GlennMartinPhotography Thanks. Yes, I also had my settings reset automatically after an update some months ago. Definitely something to watch out for.
I noticed you have different numbers of exposures for your Ha, Sii, Oiii captures on the Horsehead nebula. 34 Ha, 36 Sii, and 22 Oiii - was that planned for some reason? Or is that after eliminating bad frames? If you planned those exposures like that, could you tell me why, and how you arrived at those numbers? I'm still very much in the beginner stage, Started with Siril and now using PixInsight, started with OSC and now getting into SHO, and often run in to my end result having different coloration from the rest of what's out there.
Your second guess was right. That’s what I had left after a series of cloud fronts ruined a heap of frames. Everything is processed in pixinsight. My editing is always towards the aesthetic side, I just keep messing around till I feel it looks nice. Do note in my pinned comment even though it says HSO pallets they’re all SHO except for the grey and red dragons of Ara
Due to the different wavelenghts of light it does produce different image colourings. That's why I'll typically play around with SHO, HSO, OSH, OHS, etc etc etc. Usually the SHO pallatte is the winner, but can get some interesting combos out of others especially if you're not worried about being "accurate" 🙃
Does anyone else take their subs and do all of their processing to see what they get, without looking at "perfect" examples like Hubble? Or do you see what it "should" look like and then work towards that end result?
People who don't know anything about astrophotography spend a lot of time thinking about gear. People who know spend a lot of time thinking about processing. 😂
Thanks so much for the feedback 🙂 the cloth baggy comes with the TC40 tripod. Velcros in place but can be left permenantly when the logs are folded up.
