This happened in the 1960’s. Snowmobile were just starting to become a thing. My Uncle ran a rural newspaper. He also would print things for people. He said he could barely keep up with the demand for “Private Property No snowmobiles”
He told his brother (my Dad) that the County & City government had created extensive trails that ran for many miles. That the vast majority of the snowmobilers were good people & obeyed the laws. Yet, there were other who went off trails & caused extensive & very expensive damages. Tempers were rising & it became a very bitter debate. I was only in Middle School but I was aware of the furious feelings.
I could tell stories of things some snowmobilers had done things that caused such anger but I will instead tell what happened. Someone stung a wire across an illegal trail. It was about head/chest level. It was done in an area of deep shade. Anyway a snowmobilers came down this highly posted no trespassing illegal trail. He was going at high speed when he hit the across trail wire. He was hurled off the snowmobile & experienced major physical trauma. Since this guy was upon an illegal trail his body wasn’t found for well over a day. Many were horrified & others acted that he got what he deserved.
As I recalled they never caught the person who strung the wire. The State & County governments worked with farmers & snowmobilers to toughen the laws & ordinances. Things improved over time but there are still some issues even today
Loved hearing the jackwagon get his at the funeral procession. Sad thing is a lot of suburban and urban areas have taken to having either a police escort for the procession or handing out a printed map for the mourners to get to the graveside on their own. You can still find proper respect in small town America though. 2018 my grand aunt ( gramp's sister) was called home after a long life in service of the community and as we followed the hearse from in front of the church and got on the state route for the ride up to the cemetery on the edge of town I started noticing traffic in the opposite direction pulling to the side and waiting for the procession to pass, towns people walking or mowing their lawns stopping what they were doing, removing their hats if wearing one or just simply bowing their head as we went past.
That the fault of there lousy parents. In my world we were taught from a very early age to respect the dead. We alway pull to the shoulder of the road until the passing.
On the first story with Karen giving you all the excuses and still never paying and still expecting sympathy after she had so many chances. What you should have done is sue her for all of the bounced checks. Somehow she still hired a lawyer? It seems to me she was just trying to live there free! It is possible to sue for treble (triple) damages for bounced checks.
