@ChillStatus Thank U for sharing Ur story and thank U for Ur service 🙏🏼💜🌍🕊️🎹 Roy's music has a special place in my life since almost 2 decades now, but I can hardly imagine how it was like to hear him for the first time back in the early 80s though! 🤩
You brought back great memories when you mentioned Ft. Dix, NJ! I had my basic training and AIT there in 1979 right out of high school! I've been a fan of Roy Ayers ever since I can remember! Thanks for your service from a fellow vet and fellow jazz lover!
@@tommybluebones8265 Other favorite Roy Ayers cuts...Better Days, Simple and Sweet, This Side of Sunshine, A Tear to a Smile, and my #1 favorite "my life, MY LIFE, my life!..in the sunshine.
Bless up! I hail from Chicago and the DJ's played a lot of Roy's jam on the radio back in the '80's. However, I was in Japan in the '90's and I came across this Roy Album that I never heard before that date and it blew my mind and I became a bigger fan of Roy and a new fan of Fela. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/zEGU1p8PUAA/v-deo.html
I’m 58, I remember the day well back in the 70’s when my Sister bought Roy Ayer’s album. I was hooked from then till now, I can honestly say he is the only Entertainer that I’m a fan of.
I had just graduated from high school overseas two years before the release of ACOTW ( rel. 1980 ). So when the fam and I got back Stateside that year, I didn't know that this had already been released. Fast forward to 1983: shortly after being inducted into the Navy, I continued my training in A & C school the following year at Fleet Combat Training Center in Virginia Beach. Unlike the other sailors that went on liberty who went north to the strip, instead I headed west to Norfolk. Back in the days before the internet, I knew almost instinctively where to go to get good music. At that time there had been a record and tape shop on Granby St a few blocks away from the former Judge's Chambers on Monticello Ave. I don't recall having seen this album there at the time ( I picked up anything by Roy that I saw in any record store ); I wound up buying what was a follow up, Lots Of Love. Lots Of Love was the culmination of the projects done with Nigerian multi_instrumentalist, Fela Kuti. To this day Lots Of Love remains my favorite Roy Ayers album. It was not until years later that I even became acquainted with the work on ACOTW. It seems like this one was a sleeper - I don't know. Yet still as far as Roy Ayers endeavors, go it's solid! 😎 To this day, my favorite track on the album is River Niger. Third Eye is somethin' 2 cruise to and I'm warming up to the others as well 🎼🎵🎶
I remember buying this in the 80s. It blew me away and caused me to read and search for why much of our history was "White Wash." I am grateful for people like Roy Ayers, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, Cheikh Anta Diop, Chinua Achebe, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, etc. Also The Most Yahweh and Yahshua... who grew up in Africa! "Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt..." (Matthew 2:13). Our Savior is a Black Man!!!
It should be noted that the late William Allen appears on here as he had on many of Roy's solo efforts. He had been Roy's bassist as far back as the days of the Ubiquity ensemble. He was one of the folks that put the musical magic into everything that Roy put out
Roy ayers africa album is a masterpiece possibly one of his finest albums.he is one of the greatest and admired jazz funk fusion musicians ever and has influenced so many..bought this lp when first released and it still is truly something special.roy's very own Master Plan.beautiful.
I too am a life long Roy Ayers fan since the 70's. He brought that jazz fusion on those vibes. I have probably all his albums either on vinyl, cassette, and CD. I don't think my 8tracks withstood the test of time. But from college to the military Roy had something for every journey your ear and mind could endure. Another one of favorites was Everbody loves the Sunshine especially on a beautiful weekend morning. I loved to ride and listen to that jam while cruising. All his music so mellow and funky in a smooth way. Still putting it out there.

Seeing this album title for the first time, and it's clarified something on Soul II Soul's "Jazzie's Groove" where Jazzie says "For everyone who remembers the Africa Centre... Centre of the WORLD!!" Now, 30+ years later, I get the reference! Great album btw.
