You may have guessed, but I like the "is this an option" A bit risky, but a great chance to get nice taper and begin a new branch structure that you can manage over the upcoming years. Any of the other options will be nice too!
Don't worry Jay. Mistakes keep us on our toes. A learning experience. You are the artist and your vision of how you want to the Port to look is in your hands. I think that a cup of tea or coffee and a nice relaxing afternoon will gather your thoughts on what to do. As the old saying goes: Sleep on it. You will then have the inspiration to style your Port. Great video as always.
Looks to me like you had a serious case of the “CHOPPINITS.” We’ve all been there my friend. My vote is for option #2. I like the balance of the branches and the way that the branches emanate from the right spots in the trunks, namely the bends. Also LOOK AT ALL THOSE CUTTINGS!
I don’t know what I’m doing but I like what you did! I like idea 2! But the other ones also work! You’re just going to have to buy more to do the other ones haha I’m ready to work on mine!
It's hard to get a 3D feel from the video but from what I see I would probably cut off the thick branch from that slingshot at the top and the little thin branch that's lowest on the trunk. And the rest...I don't know. I started laughing when I saw the thumbnail and my first thought was: "You ruined it" Lol :)
@@BlueJayBonsai It's not ruined. Not yet at least. :) One fact that may help you make your final decision is that these guys grow like crazy and it will probably pop new sprouts all over.
Halloween episode of Blue Jay Bonsai: Let there be carnage! Lucky we didn't end up having anything red in this one........ Can you wire a jade? Won't the wire leave bad marks? I don't know actually, I only have just discovered how to keep my jade happy. I'd stay with the clip and grow. Do what the tree thinks is good for 'em.
Forgot to answer the wire part… yes you can wire dwarf jades. Check out @Little Jade Bonsai channel. He is the Prince of Portulacaria. 👑 Just wire after a few weeks of no water so the branches don’t snap. I’m still experimenting with both clip and grow, and wiring. Want to learn everything before I pick.
Is it possible to prune too much? I've got a suffering, massive Portulacaria Afra that become severely stretched out. Will I kill it if I cut it all down?
In general - no you can chop it waaaay back and it survives. For me that's about 9 out of 10 times it works exactly as planned. Once i chopped off everything and just left a stub of a trunk and it ended up dying. I think winter was the wrong time to do that.
🌟Hi @kino410. Yes, I do plant the big cuttings usually, until I run out of space. Usually I wait for the cut end to ‘crust’ or ‘scab’ over. This is about 5 days. I just let them sit on the counter until the end dries. Then I put them in a pot with bonsai soil. You can then start misting them with water, and after another 5 days you can water them and continue to water normally, and mist daily. When you see new little leaves growing, you know it’s worked and don’t need to mist daily.

🌟Good point Tom! Thanks for your words of encouragement.
So many cuttings!!! My wife hates it when I keep all my cuttings, but I hate to waste. Option 4 is the one I liked best.
🌟Thank you oscars85! Sometimes I think the cuttings take up more room than the trees!
Big brave cuts and i like the look of all thos cuttings, i sense a possible port forest coming soon
🌟Thanks Scott! You mean… ANOTHER port forest right? Ha ha. 😁
As Peter Chan would say. “You must be bold” Thanks, keep growing
🌟It’s scary being bold - But I try! Thanks Matt!
Beautiful bonsai program👍👍🙏
🌟 Thank you!

🌟Yup Colin. Choppinits is almost as famous as "here I go" now.
@@BlueJayBonsai step lightly, heretic…those are sacred words you tread on.
You can make a nice forest planting out of all those cuttings 👍
🌟Thanks! I think I can make 2 forests!
@@BlueJayBonsai that would such a fun video to watch 🤘
Ports are so fun to work with.
🌟Thanks! Don’t know how I got addicted, but I am. 👍
Who needs vision when you have shears? 😂
🌟Ha, nice one! 😂
You have a wealth of big cuttings to root with. Nice.
🌟Thanks Tom. I’ll show the cuttings in a future video. I did plant them to root..
Beautiful program. 👍
🌟Thank you!
I like idea 1, you did great!
Grts
Kennet
🌟Thank you @KennetDeBondt!🐦💙
I vote for 2 or 4, which gives you more of a tree form. You could cut the branch back to no leaves, I am pretty sure they will produce new branches
🌟Thanks Xin! I know they backbud, but I find them inconsistent on where they will grow new branches..
I don’t know what I’m doing but I like what you did! I like idea 2! But the other ones also work! You’re just going to have to buy more to do the other ones haha I’m ready to work on mine!
🌟Genius @iPheek ! What a great excuse to buy more. 👍 Good luck with yours. 🤞
Wow lots of nice looking cuttings fortune favors the brave
🌟Thanks Michael! I had to give away all the cuttings as I have no more room!
Thank you for sharing, greetings of friendship from Indonesia🙏🙏
🌟Thank you my friend! 🙏
Your ideas are all really cool, any one of them would look great!
🌟Thanks James! ❤️
That’s such a large specimen I thought it was a Crassula at first!
🌟Thanks Edwin! Yes it’s the largest I have ever seen here! I’ve only seen bigger in videos from South Africa.
Nice..goodjob my friend
🌟 Thanks @Suta Tama ! 👍
Just let that grow for awhile and recover. It has a nice trunk, it should pop up and surprise you with something that catches your eye.🍻🍻
🌟Joseph - I like the way you think! 👍
Idea 2 is best IMO
🌟Idea 2 seems to be very popular! Thanks Bradley!

Do you replant those cutting after? If yes what the best way to do it
Thanks

🌟Noice foist Matt! I guess I’m not the only one up early today. 😀
What app did you use on iPad to style portuacaria
🌟Hi John! I used an app call SketchClub. It has a built-in record feature. 👍
Two part video on how to ruin a portulacaria!!
🌟Thanks Michael. It makes for good UA-cam drama. 🤣
