  • The beginning of my Tidewater VA content. Chesapeake Square Mall. Not totally dead yet, but its glory days are clearly over. Can the new owners take this mall back to relevance? We'll have to wait & see.

Before this mall there was Tower Mall in Portsmouth that's long gone, demolished in 2001. I grew up just across the way from Chesapeake Square Mall. The area of land the mall is built on was original farmland which I loved as a kid getting to watch the farm machinery at work. Watching the crop-dusting planes was really cool too. Eventually progress was going to take over and the mall was under construction. We had a copy of the floor plan in my architectural class at the High School and me and some friends also wondered around the construction site after dark one night and were almost caught. I worked at several stores in the mall over the years when I was younger including Family Bookstores, Camelot Music, Walden's Books, and Macy's. I spent much of my teenager and young adult years shopping and working at this mall when I was going to school and really miss that time now looking back on it. I really hope that this mall can be saved somehow, but it doesn't seem very promising. It's all very sad to see for malls all around this country.

I've lived close enough to this mall my whole life to have visited it every so often throughout the years and especially within the last few. It's kind of sad looking back on this footage since I remember a time when almost all the stores were open, and since this video was made the JCPennys closed along with a few other stores, and there was a rope preventing people from entering the entire wing of the mall with the play center, which was somewhat recently moved back *even further* as the only open stores at that end relocated to a more central part of the mall. There's also only about 5 restaurants open, the sweets place, Nori Japan, Chinese Express, Big Island Smoothie and Auntie Annie's which has a stand in the food court. I have a lot of memories here, like when I was about 10 or so I played in the play center, to visiting the mall with my now passed father and a recent visit where I reflected upon the place as a whole. I'm uncertain if the mall will survive. The cinemark might actually stay up, though, since I think the closest other theatre is quite the distance away.

Went here the other day and it’s worse now. A portion of the mall has closed down and lots of stores have closed down outside of the portion that was closed off. It’s 2021 now and I think that this mall is a lost cause. Would love to see some more restaurants or a nice grocery store like you talked about but unfortunately that’s not the case nor do I think it will happen anytime soon. Truly sad to see how it has declined f

I just happen acrossed this video. With this being a two year old video, I don't know if you were told about any updates. As of now JcPenny's is closing, the FYE has closed, and that Amercia's Burger restaurant in the food court has closed. Next to Big Woody's there is a seafood restaurant. Also I think the Target is starting to have trouble keeping up. It still gets a lot of guests but it doesn't look as well maintained. There are also suffering from less Target team members it seems. Nori Japan is still there going strong lol.

This was a busy mall back in its heyday I used to go there a lot

A grocery store probably wouldn't make it here. There's a Walmart and Sam's Club behind the mall, an Aldi's and a Lidl across the street, and a Food Lion parallel.

I grew up less than a mile from the mall. We moved to Chesapeake in 1992, a few years after the mall opened. It was a great place for a few years. When MacArthur Mall opened in Norfolk, that was the first sign of the end.

This mall started dying around mid 2000s. I usually only went to play DDR at Tilt, which is next door to where Big Woodys is, as you were walking out of the mall. I remember walking around the mall with some friends and noticed a lot of stores closed.

I grew up in this area and im still young. I remember tagging along wit my sister in like 2011-2016 and it had some great stores. It even had a huge claires!! I come maybe 1-2 a year now and still live near it, but its gotten so horrible. Urine smeel is bad at the ends of the malls, and barley any stores :( i wish i could see it thrive again.

I remember a lot of my youngest years were at this mall with my family. The mall really is a shell of it's former self. At least Nori Japan is still up lol, they have some great food.

I feel like this mall is the twin mall to Virginia center commons

  • @Bigchiefcustomz850

It is rat infested and roach infested! Problematic with gamblers, and tons of shoplifting! Kotarides is horrible and now has the worst security company in Virginia running the place! The urine smells are in the back hallways...I used to work security there and just about every service door can be pulled open because they won’t replace the doors!

I am extremely familiar with this mall I had lived in Portsmouth for many years and went to Chesapeake square mall a lot, and The macys that closed use to be Hecht's before it was Macy's. My Great grandmother passed away in 2003 and She always went to Hecht's. Also the food court use to be packed all the time up until around 2014 then a lot of places in the food court started closing. I also use to live in Rowan county North Carolina in the 90s into the early 2000s, and we use to go to Salisbury Mall, and I still remember when that mall was always packed. I don't know why Salisbury mall is even still open its now 10 times more dead than Chesapeake square mall, and Salisbury mall doesn't have a food court at all anymore all of it is now closed.

Another enjoyable video Doomie. I'm a Tidewater native, though I no longer live there, so I'm looking forward to all the malls from that area. I worked at Lynnhaven, Military Circle and Greenbrair malls at various times. Brings back great memories to see all these again. Chespeake Square is still a really beautiful mall, I hope they will go to mixed use and keep it alive.

Lots of empty space. I used to go to VA Center Commons when I lived in Richmond. They lost another anchor this year. They have had an entire empty wing for a while. It is just a matter of time before they lock the doors for good. Security can be assholes in there.
