Just so you know, this archetype does already have a name, although that name is a bit unintuitive. It's called the pixie character. Although in Guilty Gear Chipp isn't the only pixie, Millia also qualifies. Loved the video though.
Pixie is only used in some circles and is also overlapped with "Pixie grappler" which i think is a far better and more obvious archetype than the regular pixie types. I use archetype titles based on beginners and speed i think is more self evident (low hp isnt necesarrily a requirement) and is used officially as a tag in both blazblue and guilty gear, a few other games too. Its an in-house title for the archetype that devs actually use, while pixies more of a fan-name.
@DarumaFGC OK, that makes sense. I get how the term isn't exactly intuitive. Thank you for the honest and detailed reply, I just assumed since most of the video shows Chipp, that low health, or at least limited defense (like Valkenhayn) were the most essential parts of a pixie.
Even if the video is about Speed archtype, one thing that irritates me with the Ninjas is their inability to throw Shurikens or Kunais in the ground. Up to this day Hanzo from Samurai Shodown 1 is the only Ninja who can throw his Shurikens on the ground alongside with Mirei from Dual Souls The Last Bearer ,but she throws her kunai in a 45 degree angle aimed at the floor and hits low. The Ex version throw a second kunai that goes straigth (Also play Dual Souls, a Turkish indie game thet you can play for less than 10 dollars on steam)
Hyokutomaru from Garou has a grounded shuriken projectile! Hes most likely returning for the upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves - so look forward to that!
@@baalfgames5318 Its Dual Blades. Also, Dual Souls is the remake of a sequel made for mobile phones called Slashers the Power Battle, which is very much the middle ground between the two
How do you distinguish demons from speed charas? Both usually have high speed, low health, low range and focus on vortexes, mixups and even baiting and whiff punishment. Also tbh I think Tao's more of a speed character more than Valkenheyn. He's a stance/rushdown character imo. Also since you use Chipp and Strider as examples, they actually have semi-decent projectiles, which puts them more in the same camp as Bang and Ibuki for me.
Its definitely a bit of a spectrum for sure, technically you could umbrella all of these under rushdown and youd technically be right, but theres a lot of factors that i think make you more like one than the other, for example, i think restands are almost always useless for demon characters but basically necessary for speed characters, obviously none of these guys have a demon flip which adds to that. Simultaneously, demon characters have pretty mediocre blockstrings. Whereas speed characters probably have the best block pressure of any archetype. The reason i wouldnt call Valkenhayn a stance character is that theres 2 kinds of stance characters, wincon stances, where entering stance is hard and is your whole goal, or neutral stances, with different purposes that help you either mix the opponent up or pick different effective ranges. Valkenhayns stance is in a weird limbo where it doesnt really fit into either. Like youll see in the clips in the video, on the rare occassion it is used in neutral, its either used to get away from the opponent or at an insanely sharp angle that things like dps would not win out on. His stance adds to his momentum, his blockstrings are longer (but his mix is worse than in human form) and because he both cant block in wolf form and its tied to a resource unlike say, Leo from GG, so his goal isnt really getting wolf form and staying there. Its just an enhancer for when contacts already made with the opponent.
Great video! I'm always pleased that you explain your thinking behind the classifications and break them down very clearly for distinction, and I have to say, I'm very excited for the footsies character video. I also like the dual-axis tier list chart you're working on in at the end of the video. I like a traditional tier list as much as the next person, but something about the two axes is just more... pleasing to my brain? Anyway, great work, keep it up, I'm excited to see what you put out!
From what I've seen other creators do, I think the 1-axis tier list does better for clickbait, but as far as understanding goes, it gives too many people the wrong Idea, I think theoretical vs practical is really really important, I got clowned on in the comments of the What Makes a Top Tier video for saying Ken is, and likely always will be better than Luke in street fighter 6, due to practicality being naturally ingrained into Kens moveset whereas Luke has to use more guesses per round to win. But even at the time, I stood by it, and I think results show it was pretty resoundingly true.
Hit and run are different! Think someone like Vega, he doesnt have strong mixup or block pressure at all and is solely focused on interception, and his moves often just send him back fullscreen on block or sometimes on hit.
Theyre difficult, the mental flowcharting thing is a really strange thing to get used to, but if you put the time in it can be really fun... although prepare to lose a few friends if you obliterate them as these guys. Not fun to be on the recieving end of.
@@DarumaFGC Well, I typically play zoners. Which isn't the most friendly archetype either ; D That might make a good video actually! "Tier list, Which archetype is the most friendly."
@@oronsnibben unfortunately I think that would be pretty inconclusive, theres a ton of characters like say, item-throwers, who vary wildly between ease of use and tier in any game they're present in. They are called Pixie characters. I've always seen this type of character as glass cannons but instead of maxing out damage they instead max out mobility and frame data. If its the lowest HP character in the game, chances are its a pixie character. I would know. I main the shit out of these characters.
Pixie gets used sometimes, but i try make things really obvious for beginners, and I think Pixie works much better for "Pixie grappler" than they do for these guys, not a lot of games have the low hp pool downside to swap for speed, and speed is actually officially used as a tag for chipp in GGST. So I went with that instead for simplicity and clarities sake.
@@BlackHero20 The way I see it is that every pixie is a speed character but not every speed character is a pixie. I wouldn’t call Valk a pixie but he’s def speed but Taokaka is a pixie
Arakune and faust are covered in a lot of detail in my item-thrower archetype archive actually! As for merkava, might be a while on that one, hes a hard dude to place in an archetype, air fireballs like his are rare.
Honestly a really hard question, i think id maybe put her on the outskirts of a mixup character. Her neutral is just so unique though, its quite hard to point to other characters who play similarly, but she does, theoretically anyways - kinda analogue something like GGXRD Millia, more mobility than other characters, her kunai act as a pin to both stuff approaches and force mixups, her air to ground is astounding and her gap closing is quite good. The only thing shes missing is a proper version of disc to actually force mixups off any knockdown she gets, not that her knockdown pressure is bad, its just a little simple for a mixup character - but street fighter kinda needs that, if it was overly potent, it would be basically broken. So, i think maybe shes a true mixup character, even if largely by technicality.
Wasnt on purpose, I was making a series on archetypes and thought "archetype overview" sounded way too stiff and brainstormed other possible ideas, pretty quickly you realise theres not a lot of other things to land on as a result.
Unfortunately its kinda between Blazblue and Guilty gear and i want the focus to be on the archetype and not the characters themselves, i might do an actual street fighter tier list at some point, but a lot of archetypes, like item throwers, summoners, puppet characters, etc are anime fighting game archetypes, and will never appear in street fighter, so, sorry, kinda infeasible until i actually make my own tier list maker, which i couldnt find a good tool for in a reasonable amount of time for this vid.
