When I backpacked the entire JMT and Mt Whitney in August 2018, there was NO snow left! Rae Lakes..Evolution Valley…stunning.. thank you for your amazing videos you are bringing back memories and make we want to go back… but I must admit, I prefer easy peasy stream crossing and low/no snow :)

I dreamt of no snow hiking then reality hit me and that included hoards of people. So for the price of snow, I got solitude!

Sorry I can’t help but comment~what an amazing journey you are on! I say this as I sit by my pool -70 degrees at 2000 ft elevation- foothills of the Sierra-gazing at Carson Pass covered in snow.

Love your videos. 1 word of advise if I may! I noticed your still using 1 trekking pole with your ice ax while climbing. That my friend is a disaster waiting to happen. Never ever use a hiking pole while climbing with an ice ax. If you have to self arrest there is no way you will do so quick enough. you will have to get rid off the pole then try to self arrest. Unfortunately by time you get this you will most likely be out of Sierras. On a good note, you did have your ice ax in the up hill hand. be safe

Thank you very much for the feedback! I’m not out of the Sierra just yet so message received, with feedback onboard…makes sense.

Nice detailed video. Thx. I’ve hiked thru in 2014 (low snow) & 16 (avg snow). Used k-10 crampons. Like ur route down to Vidette meadow.
Total pack wt leaving KMS? Me=40 w/ 4-5 days food.
My jumps were KMS>(LP:’16)>Kearsarge>VVR>Reds>TM>KMN using 500 then 450 can. Did Whitney in ‘16.
What was ur food wt per day?
    Ages of the crew? I was 64 & 66.
Any altitude symptoms? Sometimes I get some nausea. Now I use meclizine to keep appetite ok. Might try Diamox if I ever do it again.
Hope u can do same type of video thru reroute & N of Tuolumne to KMN. 🤞

Thank you for the comments! I’m averaging about 1.7lbs food/day
Ages of crew: 41, 51, 63. No altitude issues except getting used to sleeping at altitude. Took a couple days for me.

Super helpful. Would you say crampons and boots are a requirement right now in the Sierra, or are we getting into trail runners and microspikes weather? I'll be hopping back on at Walker Pass in about a week!

Traction is never a requirement. If you’re going to rock the trail runners, I would bring trail crampons. Microspikes in my opinion are not the proper device for steep slopes.

I preface that I’m going through the Sierra now. I am using hiking boots with steel general mountaineering crampons which work for me.
As soon as I’m out of the Sierra, I’m going right back to my trail runners.
In the meantime, I use my runners as water fording shoes.

Why did you elect not to do a blue blaze up to Whitney?

Schedule. The team I was with had members on a timeline. That simple.
