“Black Suit” hackers hold SA’s Health Service hostage: Lives on the line

- A ransomware attack on South Africa’s National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) is delaying the processing of millions of blood tests and imperiling the lives of an untold number of people. BizNews speaks to Chris Bateman, a former long-time News Editor of the South African Medical Journal - after he was contacted by the Eastern European-sounding middleman of the “Black Suit” hackers. The “middleman” made dire threats if the NHLS didn’t enter into negotiation with the hackers. Meanwhile, a 12-year-old girl is dying in Groote Schuur Hospital because her illness can’t be diagnosed without a blood test. There have been similar attacks in countries outside Russia…which leads to the suspicion that the hackers are Russian.

My mom has cancer and had to redo all of her blood work because of this kak. Hope these p&@+£ hackers are found and dealt with asap.
the problem isnt the hackers... there will always be hackers. the problem is the utterly incompetent morons that has been entrusted with our critical information systems. There are more holes in this country's official data infrastructure than a swiss cheese...

Why don't they have data backups from the previous 24hrs, that can be reinstalled on another server and web domain, within a day?
Its just a disaster more people will die than covid
Would honesty be a question for big data buffs. But the exact same thing has happened in the uk within the last 2 months or so
The backups were hacked into before the main attack.
Who was the IT manager ?
These days why critical systems do not have 100% alternate off-site redundancy has got me beat.
They do but ransomware is date activated, so backup are normally infected also from months back. I had this happen to my company a multi billion dollar company even our 3 month backup on restore were triggered. Nightmare.

The thing Mr. Bateman doesn't mention is biopsy and operation histology results for patients with cancer. No one is able to access histology results so all Oncology services are crippled as they can't access biopsy results describing the type of cancer or if a person even has cancer

Thanks to BizNews for giving this story airtime. It's a public health disaster happening as we speak! It should be headline news every day until it is resolved with maximun resource dedicated to it. There should be an inquery to determine if dequate data security back-up protocols were in place and were being adhered to.
I was charged and suspended over the NHLS application, i was not working for them,i was at Dept of health Gauteng-IT Technician....they been useless for a couple of years

Panyaza was just mentioning the importance of IT in the mefical field in a recent interview... Although it had nothing to do with this particular incident, as I understood.. I was surprised, as I had not thought about it much
Some big factual errors are being made here. All tests are still being done, as the automated machines are still running and recording results for patients. The problem currently is laboratories cannot digitally register the tests that are requested (so that is being done manually) and cannot upload the results onto the laboratory information system (so that is being done manually). These results are all still accessible but it is very very difficult to have them communicated individually. The current situation does not mean that tests are not being done - it means there are massive delays in getting results out/making results accessible to the treating clinicians.
It is unfortunate that (a) a doctor and/or (b) a doctor who works for the NHLS was not interviewed, because despite the interviewee working in the space (and I respect his contribution and status), there is a lot of nuance that he lacks, and it makes for information and understanding that is easily misconstrued.
The NHLS is a massive and capable system and is and has made contingency plans to mitigate what is an attack on innocent human lives.
Besides crippling the system, what is their primary objective, and don't say 💰

What i dont understand with this journalist with so many years in the field does not know the importance of blood from the patient let me tell you the importance of blood when you want to diagnose the patient you take the blood of the patient .but i suspect that who ever is hacking they know someone who works in the HHLS and south african ladies have boyfriends all over the world who knows what did they say when they were sleeping 🤣🤣🤣😂😂
