  • Into Europe: The European Union is a complex organization, with 70 years of history. Its decision-making process is sometimes obscure. So what is the European Union? How did it come to be? And how does it work?
    To explain this institution we need to ask an important question: What if the European Union was a Foodcourt?

    I think it's important to say WHY were the European restaurants ruined in the beginning. If you run 27 countries copying each other but insist on being a closed cell, they have to duplicate everything.
      Imagine you have to bake buns. If you choose to shop for 1 bun, mix, knead and bake it, to wash it all up afterwards. Repeat this until you have an ovenful of buns. Wouldn't it be much faster to make an ovenful of buns at once?
      Now think of buns as general industrial products, services, etc. This is pretty much how Europe makes buns right now! There is so much potential for optimizations - that's why I say: "you have seen nothing yet!"

    I don't like it when someone says nations had to give up their power. We didn't give up anything. We pooled it, and that is a major difference.

    • @gael9270
      @gael9270 2 роки тому +2

      People who say this talk about who owns the power.
      When a state is alone, they own most of the power over their national territory. The power they don't own belongs to local entities (municipalities, administrative regions, länd, whatever), that are still under the power of the state.
      Now when a state is a part of an international organisation that can take decisions on its own, the European Union, the state has to give power up so the European Union can have it. It means if one European state wants to do something that's in the power of the Union, then they just can't. They have lost power.
      Though I talk about the power of states (institutions that rule over given territory and population). What about the power of nations (community associated to each state) ?
      Well the power of nations can mostly be judged through democracy level. If the EU is democratic, then indeed nations didn't give power up. Though if EU is not democratic, then the nations have lost power. But democracy level within the EU is another topic.
      To summarise, yes states have given power up, nations not necessarily.

    • @LOLERXP
      @LOLERXP 2 роки тому

      @@gael9270 What those people don't get, sadly, is that there is nothing stopping someone who lives in some county of their own country making the same argument in relation to the nation state, and someone living in some area of that county then making this argument in relation to the county. It's a fallacy that would devolve down to no organisation at all, if that were possible. The bottom line would be every person being their own state, and society can't function like that. The argument is mostly made by nationalists, because for them the devolution stops at the level of the nation state, their level of political group identification. But that's just arbitrary, and they quickly abandon their own reasoning when people don't agree with their level of identification and try to break off from their idealised nation state fantasies using the very same points (e.g. Scotland and Northern Ireland in the UK).

US and China both have intense security and are probably far more severe than the entirety of the EU. The USA comparison to the EU is actually closer than this video makes it seem. The USA is comprised of 50 autonomous states, each of which have their own laws, tax codes, governments, and cultures. California, Texas, Utah, and New York are all very different from each other. The primary difference is that the US federal government is quite a bit stronger than the EU central government.

    • @IntoEurope
      @IntoEurope  2 роки тому +4

      Hi,
      I think that this is a common misconception: in the US secssion is illegal under the constitution (in the EU you can leave with Article 50), Congress can raise taxes (the EU countries haggle how much the EU's budget will be) and the states for the most part have no say in federal law (EU law in most domaines is also the subject of haggling between countries). The boils down to the fact that currently, in the EU, the member states are sovereign not the European Union (Ie the 27 chefs in 27 kitchens). I would consider these to be major differences.
      Cheers,

      @@IntoEurope Most of that is technically true - except for the bit about states having no say in federal law. The states literally create federal law; the Senate is comprised of two senators from each state. However, I feel it misses the point somewhat.
      Europeans tend to not understand just how different the states are from each other. For all intents and purposes, they may as well be sovereign. The federal government has overarching rules that it enforces, but the vast majority of laws that effect you on an individual or business level are determined by the state legislature.
      It's true that the federal govt has more authority than the EU govt does, but the structure is broadly similar. They're both unions that act as large trading blocs.

    • @IntoEurope

      If by similar, you mean that there is one entity above the rest sure, we can agree on that, but the EU is no federal enitity. I would argue that its closer to an international organisation at the moment because of its modus operandi, and the necessity for unanimity in nearly all decisions (something that most people with an EU law background I've talked to would agree with). Just imagine the gridlock if the US needed unanimity between the governors :P
      That an organization has no power to enforce rules or raise taxes is not one that you can just dismiss: the power relations between the states and the overarching entity in the EU and the US is flipped on its head.
      The fact of the matter is that the EU has no power to enforce rules at the moment (see the regular EU law supremacy disputes). Most EU law does not apply because it is EU law, but because the national parliaments agree to put it in their national laws (with their own interpretations).
      Anyways, always interesting to hear another perspective!
      Cheers,
      Hugo

      I made this comment to someone else pointing out the same aspect, but I'll copy paste it here as well.
      there is an essential difference. In US, the head of the food court has the last say. In EU, each chef can block anything any time.
      Imagine Texas having the last word over whether the US should allow any immigration whatsoever, or California having the last word over whether US should intervene in Iraq or Afghanistan, with the added bonus that Florida decided that they don't give a damn about what the US Supreme Court has to say about anything. That's EU.
      Obviously, in the US there are clear mechanisms of what happens in such cases, and this is because the food court boss holds true power (military, FBI, etc.). In EU the solution for these issues is always "let's discuss it one more time, maybe one of us changes their mind". In my opinion, the EU model is better long-term, but it can surely gets frustrating when it's the 20th time all the chefs explain Wyoming that they can't continue serving only burnt food, just because the Wyoming chef doesn't want to learn to use the new oven.

      @@IntoEurope "Just imagine the gridlock if the US needed unanimity between the governors :P"
      We've actually had this in US history as well.
      The first one was the original US government under the Articles of Confederation, between 1781 and 1789. The overarching US government couldn't really do much back then: all decisions had to be unanimous between states, the "federal" government couldn't levy any taxes whatsoever and didn't have a budget, there was no "federal" standing military... heck, we didn't even have a common currency back then. Those were some rough years for us; most individual states had weak economies and didn't really have good opportunities to grow said economies, they got picked apart and played against each other by foreign powers, a few of them nearly got into full blown hot wars against each other, and trade wars were commonplace. Many expert historians generally regard the Articles as a disaster for the United States.
      So our country has gone through the same thing as well, but most Americans today aren't really aware of what it really meant for us.

Even with Schengen, blocking Romania and Bulgaria from joining is ridiculous, and there is no argument for doing this that does not come down to racism or extremism.
