Hi, I also have the same tool, a very convenient thing, instead of kapron threads I sometimes still use braided fishing line, so it definitely never rots.
These are fine for occasional repairs, but much better and stronger to saddle stitch with a couple of needles

Is it possible to do that with thick rubber shoes using just needles?

Facts
I usually let go of the thread a lot longer than that. Its not a straight thru lenght necause the threads have to meet in the middle of the leather being sewn. It is so much easier to have a needle on the other side for ease in inserting it in the loop. The longer thread lenght also helps making the pulling it tight easier.

That was neat how you attached the thread to a piece of leather with holes in it. In the future, of you want the leather and thread to be together... just keep them in the same drawer.
Filipinos doing that on the didewalk never used that kind of awl.
What they use is a lenght of thread, amd an awl that has an indentation/more like an open sided hole near the tip of the needle just big enough for the thread.
Say he's got to sew the sole of a rubber shoe. He starts the process by placing a long enough lenght ofthreadinside the indentation and inserts the needle through the sole. He then pulls the half lenght inside the shoe. Each time he inserts the needle, the thread is caught in thr indentation, pushes it long enough, oulls it out a bit. This results in thr thread forming a loop inside the shoe. He then inserts the thread thru the loop, holds on tight while his other hand pulls till they meet in the middle, snd the process is repeated till the job is finished.
The needle is just a short piece (about four inches) of stiff wire, most often from a spring that was straightened and sharpened. While still soft enough, the indentation was made. Thus is so much easier to do with the availability of cheap copies of the Dremel moto-tool kit and diamond dust laden blades
A handle is made out of a dowel or a guava branch,and smoothened for the user's hand.

Just as a heads up, the thread actually goes through the hole where the needle goes in and thats why the needle in the awl has a channel all the way through it. The tensioner also adds tension to the thread making it easier to make tighter stitches.
-Pull the thread reel out.
Run the thread through the hole corresponding to the needle from inside the thread reel holder. The thread will come out where the needle goes in.
-Run the thread along the channel in the needle and push the needle into place.
-Tighten the compression nut.
-Remount the thread reel.
-Now sew.

Yes this is the fast way, but won't look as nice as a double needle.
Saddle stitch is equally simple, and a thousand times better of a stitch. Demonstrate that.

It will be faster.
Sewing thread is not really strong enough. I've had to use upholstery thread in a pinch, and it works great.
