These have actually been around for a while, the first patent on a similar device was published in the early 1800s, Thomas Jefferson used one according to wikipedia, the first commercially available one was around in the 1930s, and the first successful comercially available one came around in the 1940s.
Think about it celebrities and public officials may receive hundreds of letters a day and many people get responses (particularly if you write to a celebrity at an address for fan mail) if you write to a proffessional athlete and receive a signed photo in the mail back, it's probably done with an auto pen, it isn't neccesarily a forgery, but it isn't neccesarily genuine either. I ersonally received a letter a few weeks ago with the White House letterhead regarding the COVID stimulus checks signed by Donald Trump but I am 100% positive it's either a digitally added signature or an auto pen.
But there are ways to tell an autopen signature from the real deal or a photocopier, the photo copier will produce uniformly dark ink even where the letters in a signature would have points where they'd cross or overlap, an auto pen would have uniform pressure applied across the entire signature but at points where there'd be overlaps the ink would be darker, snd a real deal signature would have variations in pressure throughout and therefore slight deviations in how dark the ink is.
A professional at identifying and authenticating signatures would probably know more about it but I remember it being discussed on Pawn Stars a few years back.

Hello friends. I try to make like this 3d pen plotter but i have a problem. The Problem, i cant control the z axis with cnc shield and uno. I can controll just uno. It runs correctly. How can i solve this problem? Do you have any idea?

Hey guys let me help decide: Why woud you use this machine instead of a printer? in what cases it would make sense to buy this?
@Dez Lovecraft A handwritten message is a lot more personable than a printed one. In business applications, if you send 1000 people handwritten messages as opposed to printed ones, you'll get much better results for the campaign you're running.
So in essence, these machines (at least some of them) can perfectly replicate a handwritten message but don't have the costs/time/effort involved and can work around the clock. It's an extremly intelligent investment in that regard, but outside of that I can't think of too many
