The Fellowship of the Ring: 'Bend Not Break' Version | Frankly #58

    Description
In this Frankly, Nate recasts his favorite book series, the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, with some speculative “archetypes” of our human world grouped by various timelines. The eventual reduction in energy and material accessibility will likely alter the archetypes that we’re familiar with today - perhaps to become something not helpful to larger society. What categories of human archetypes in the future will have the potential to best influence their communities and the Earth? What will the most powerful among us choose when it comes to protecting their (monetary, temporary) wealth vs using it towards prosocial collective responses? Finally, and most importantly what archetypes will form a new Fellowship of humans to ‘bring the ring to Mordor’ during humanity’s ‘Bend not Break’ moment? Which archetype do you resonate with? Are there others?
Artwork concepts by Nate Hagens, Natasha Linhart, and Leslie Bart-Lutz. Art compiled and edited by Jay Figuerdo using AI software Mid-Journey and other tools.

As a psychotherapist and faculty at a master's degree, teaching career counseling, I have been thinking about this needed changes in the roles that people will have to play in the near, medium and far future. My students are always intrigued that I don't follow a regular, say "old and outdated class plan", but rather make them think about it by understanding more the REAL world. Thank you for your Frankly, I will include it in my classes now!.

Homemakers. Totally left them out. That's what 1/2 of all our ancestors were and good housekeeping/homemaking involves craft, healing, organization, teaching and the optimal use of limited resources. We need farmers, craftspeople and housekeepers. Everyone else is support staff.

Reading your comment I’m thinking about all of the homesteaders I am following, many of whom did not start out with the knowledge and are now nurturing small homesteads, farming, learning skills to support their homes, canning, preserving, dehydrating, planting herb gardens and medicinals, raising chickens for eggs, a cow and goats for milk and cheese, planting fruit and nut trees. Really becoming solid in sustainability. I think back to our ancestors who immigrated, or started over in new places where they had to learn the land. Build their homes. We can be taught much asking our elders and those who were here first how best to move forward living with love and care for one another and our planet.

Agreed. Matriarch doesn't cover it. When you back off from all the conveniences of modern life, you discover how difficult it really is, even without children. Well, small children. Traditionally, older children were drafted into all sorts of work. Girls took over spinning thread or yarn. That's why an older unmarried woman was called a spinster - she had noone to take over the spinning for her.

The architype we all need to be: The Commoner - people who understand that nature and the commons can not be owned, it must be shared.

I see you have not heard about "The Tragedy of the Commons" - yet this is Lesson One (or should be) in all environment studies. Basically, Common Land shared by humans (or any species) whose numbers are not drastically held back by the most cruel forces of Nature, becomes a Desert quite fast. Sometimes so fast you can see it happening - for instance the desertification of large tracts of Ethiopia could be seen from space in the 1960s, as numbers of humans and their goats and other livestock exploded exponentially (from 18 million in 1950 to 35 million in 1980 - and now it is 129 million). Garrett Hardin got in big trouble for mentioning this, in the 1960s. Big big big trouble. It puts me in mind of something you can see now from space - acres of plastic tunnels in Spain in which crops are being grown and irrigated. This is also leading to Desertification (with the help of Climate Change).
By the way, the population of Ethiopia started to go "hockeystick graph" (i.e. exponential) in 1920, when it was 12 million. This was probably due to fast modernization and westernization by Haile Selassie and by Protestant and Catholic missionaries at that time, using mass education to improve health and wellbeing - but this also increases longevity of course. The educated elites prospered - and the health of the goatherders also improved, but their numbers shot up and this was not good for them or the environment. Most nations have followed this pattern at some point in their history, often more than once. They prosper, and overcome the Four Horsemen (apparently) - and then there is Overshoot leading to Desertification and Famine and Pestilence and War - ooops, sounds like those pesky Four Horsemen, though they are not supposed to appear until the very end. Every time, humans who are not elites blame the elites - when in point of fact it is the overall numbers of humans, of any income, that is the main causative factor. This cycle and its main or even only cause is easily seen in other species - but not in humans, it seems. So we have Live Aid concerts for Ethiopia - which just makes the hockey stick keep going up, and now there is permanent Famine not just frequent Famine. Because there is a big difference between 12 million and 129 million, believe it or not. The forecast for 2050 is 215 million - though that was before grain from Russia and Ukraine stopped coming.

Thanks, Nate! Proving once again the power of creating distinctions: What we name and define acquires clarity and becomes more real, and more useful.
I found quite a bit of illumination in your new archetypes. I saw the entirety of my own life having been expressed in several of them, and as a result better understood my life as having been dedicated to embodying, as an ambassador slightly before her time, a model of how to live by some of the principles we will need to get through the coming years. This is helpful to me, as lately, given the nature of my vision and purpose throughout my life, it has been hard not to feel blind, and a failure, given the broad discrepancy between what I believed we could accomplish, and the reality of where we are now.
As always, it's a delight to connect with you, and a privilege to be a participant in this greater family of caring and committed people. 💚

Great episode, Nate. Loved the analogy
    2 small notes:
First, I really liked the art. Could see a card game being built around it, kinda like Dominion. I haven't checked the episode notes, but it'd be nice to have the artist mentioned in the youtube comment.
Second: I have to digress a bit about Sam. I can see Gollum as a catalyst, but Sam is the worker that gets the actual shit done while others reap the glory. Frodo comes from a wealthy family, and doesn't have to do much besides "managing the state" prior to the start of the book, but Sam is blue collar through and through, and does the actual field work. And during the adventure, while Frodo has to "bear the weight of the ring" (the story) and certainly is needed to end Sauron, Sam is the one that bears the backpack to support Frodo, and eventually, Frodo itself.
If we manage to pull through the Great Simplification, no doubt some Frodos (or Hari Sheldons) will be rightfully laudeated for the task, but the grunt work and toiling of the common man will be quickly forgotten.
And of course, we must never forget that every Sam is a Frodo to another Sam.

I submitted a podcast suggestion through Nate’s website in the last week and this episode answered my suggestion even better than I hoped, which makes me think that he probably gets some version of this suggestion a lot: what could/should I do from the place I’m standing, as someone willing to make this their life’s work? Imagining lots of people asking that question fills me with hope in a very dark moment.

Thanks for another super podcast! As a systems team coach I often address the roles from different perspectives, such as outer roles (organigramme kind of stuff), hidden (psychology at the service of the team) secret (what I don’t know propels me - there’s a lot in there, individually and collectively which makes this podcast even more relevant) and other things such as zeitgeist (time spirits that tend to be extremely fast polarizing, especially when coupled with with unmanaged secret roles, hence all the strong reactions to bleeps and other things mentioned in the previous frankly). Unearthing and naming those things give the system agency and the archetypes fall into place. Thanks again!

This was a great intro to a huge but wonderful topic. I think it would be useful to have some historians on your program who could talk about what has happened in collapses of societies in the past. Also, have someone who could talk about what is happening in Beirut, where the economy and the political order have broken down. How do people survive there? Then there is Haiti. Are there types of people there who are pointing a way out of the current chaos.

You have a number of brilliant ideas here, thanks. LOTR served to inspire roleplaying classes, so I think future people might actually aspire to roles that seem to them plug-and-play as far as immediate or mutual aid fellowships. On the other hand, I expect worldview or ideology to lead people to only want to help like-minded or family or in bonds of sworn fealty. Tolkien worked against that impulse by having Elrond, a diplomat, preside over a sort of happy accident of the fellowship, all of whom were actually selected to BE DIPLOMATS themselves. The only exception to this was Boromir, who was selected to secretly plot to seize the ring for his own people.
In RPG terms, those who will form fellowships must already be disposed to overcome or overlook all the mutual antagonism of having differences, through already in a sense being good at doing that.
Besides just ignoring differences, there are actual methods to disarming triggers and reconciling hostile ideologies. I am tempted to mention Buddhist postmodern philosophers like Ken Wilber. Somehow I doubt there will be nearly enough of those sorts. So I expect the various roles you suggest to become full of groupthink, much as the current tech industry is full of post humanist effective altruists who disproportionately value their vision of space-faring cyborgs.
I laud your ideas. In the main, your characters seem humanists who are also grounded, pragmatic generalists who accept tasks crucial not only for group survival but human survival, so that there is a social structure built in. The members will often have to make sacrifices so that these tasks happen; and you assume they will all understand why they ought to. There will be a ton of Boromirs, I fear that almost all of future us will be Boromirs out of love and patriotism and ideals. Sadly, it may come down to Frodos, who let us admit are a rare type: a neutral but moral hero, plus pragmatic Stalwart Sams, plus catalytic pawns of Fate I guess. Because all the rest are frankly likely to become distracted by warfare.
Your video sent me scrambling to find my own list, some of which duplicates yours. Trying to be constructive here, Ireland faced a similar challenge post-collapse 6th Century, and basically encouraged everyone to learn as much as they could, which was possible because scholars were fleeing the mainland due to war and slavers. The Irish kept the Greek science texts and methods and passed them down in time for the Renaissance.
We need people versed in both ecology and our own most lethal weapons technology, but you seem to reject keeping them in ivory towers doing research, and turn them into farmers, a sort of classic authoritarian move. A better method would be to teach ecology and radiation and biochemistry and medicine to everyone. Otherwise the learned will become snatched, killed, exiled or enslaved, due to their knowledge, and their individual value and power to Boromirs. A good number will flee to hinterlands, mountains or islands, to avoid what they will consider persecution and dire risk, and continue their learning. Those refugia open to learning will benefit, and save humanity's bacon much later when the wars wind down.

Wonderful 👏👀 On the cutting edge of science more & more mainstream scientists are saying our Universe IS NOT a machine with moving parts that can be easily measured & understood. Some have used the words “simulation” and “hologram” which (however much I agree) creeps me out. I’ve been saying for awhile we need new metaphors to go with our new models & understanding before they have any chance to catch on. I have not, however, been suggesting we need new archetypes but I now realize (thanks to you🙏) I’ve been doing this exercise without knowing it. One of my main ones is the Peaceful Warrior of whom we need a literal army to dismantle and remove any and all obstacles between us and a better future. Growing numbers of us are already calling each other Comrades (all for one and one for all.) I strongly feel comradeship needs to be balanced by creativity, authenticity and individuality. For me this is the Artists (who I also associate with freedom, ritual, magic, enlightening and entertaining). We have created mountains of trash. I feel the best way to address all this waste is to a generation of Scavengers who are experts at turning trash into treasure. Two of the most important questions of our time are “how do we heal in a toxic culture?” And “What is real and what is illusion?” (The topic of your last video). Healing is the realm of Healers! I think indigenous healers are also ecologists so I combine those two. We heal the planet at the same time we’re healing ourselves🤞😇 Reality and illusion is the realm of storytellers and map makers/ cartographers for me. The “real” takes you pleases you wanna go and “illusion” gets you lost, confused and trapped. I’ve always found it interesting that the most spectacular and light filled cathedral’s were created in the “dark ages.” Propaganda? I think so. We had Master’s and Apprentices back then and not corrupt, stuffy and mechanical Academia. They also had a healthy respect for the ever present unknown. I sometimes find myself calling that “wisdom.” Lastly we need Miracle Workers to save us from this god awful predicament. We could also call them Shaman 🌞🤝🌞🤝🌞

One more Bender to add. It has been projected that before the end of this century our planet will see the wholesale beginnings of an absolutely massive displacement of people, hundreds of millions are the low estimates, due to sea level rise, shortages of fresh water, environmental collapse and the ripples of civil disruptions that go along with those... and now we can toss displacement due to AI on the heap. It has been estimated that six hundred million people will be dislocated due just to sea level rise alone. This will be global with no nation spared.
What is missing almost if not completely from the discussion about those dire warnings is how will those hundreds of millions of people be addressed? The UNHCR can't handle what is going on now, there will definitely be a need for an archetype of those specialized to address just this singular issue of internal and external displacement. I propose this category of archetype be called the Shepherd because it will require kindness, foresight, persistence and forcefulness when needed.
Anyone who thinks illegal immigration is at crisis levels now has no idea the size of the tsunami rolling in from just over the horizon.
In the U.S. people have flooded into states such as Arizona, California and Florida from other states for years on end; what happens when that migration reverses?

I would like to bring to attention that this video reads totally different to someone who makes a living as an illustrator and graphic designer. I genuinely do not mean to be snarky or trolling, but the optimism to this video in the comments read totally different to us working in the art field. We are watching a totally different video.
For those unaware, all of the art in this video is made with Ai Large Language Models. I realize the challenge of producing content for a weekly podcast, and I also realize that paying a human to make these wouldn't be feasible. But I also think Nate should note that his presentations use Ai art. (I think the use of Ai art for a project like Nate's is totally acceptable, but it absolutely needs to be noted, this is basic honesty)
I just hope that the deep thinkers here can reflect on this aspect. I've seen several areas of my profession completely atrophy over my lifetime, and it all looks so familiar. The irony of this video is not lost on artists.

It's amazing to me that people on the bend-not-break team don't use AI to expose the evidence-based support that the limbic brain that got us hear and the cognitively biased confabulations our brains tend to generate to quell our cognitive dissonance. For instance, I've spent hours carefully prompting Google Gemini which delivers evidence supporting most of the systemic issues presented on TGS podcasts. It will even provide evidence how the elites (and their engineering, marketing, legal, investor, users, etc) minions) will become more corrupt and deluded by their accumulating power, status, wealth, fame, and control.
I've also used Gemini to brainstorm a community based curriculum to teach an elementary introductory course MuSIASEM model (episode #107) to middle schoolers. I know the energy waste from AI, but I don't know how to avoid using it to effectively compete with business as usual.

16:06 this is actually the archetype of the information system that was known to be possible, yet this vision was beat to market and its purchase in society displaced by the existing, already known pattern/design language of a physical design metaphor. I am struggling with this one on so many levels. I understand where you're coming from, preparing for what's coming and who we may need to successfully navigate the challenges we will/may face. The start was straight forward explaining the different current archetypes, but the mutations is where it started to became tricky. Scholar to farmer? Why, what’s the catalyst for that what happens to existing farmers, the people who already know farming, or makes scholars suited to that role? Scholar to ecologist/healer/earth warden/engineer etc seems a more appropriate mutation. Differentiating between so-called existing archetypes and future archetypes is nonsensical, the Banker from the elite seems superfluous. The ancestor lives in the past, partly in the present as they pass away, never in the future, in the future they are the living generation still to come, the ancestor is the bow not the arrow. I could go on but it all boils down to one glaring problem, the use of the ring fellowship as an analogy.
I understand the analogy you're trying to make with The Lord of the Rings but the challenge (singular) of the ring saga, in two parts is simple, destroy the One Ring defeat Sauron. It does not fit the complexity of trying to find the “solutions to the challenges” (plural) of a much more complex problem, of a much more complex, sophisticated global civilisation. The fate of middle earth is predetermined, set by Illuvatar at the Dawn of the creation of Arda and is played out deterministically, there is in effect no free agency in Tolkien’s world. As a philosophical exploration of the psychological, moral, emotional and spiritual journey of the individual it has relevance but as a blueprint for the evolution of a society, a society far less bucolic than Tolkien’s fantasy not so much. As much as I would love to visit, nay live in Tolkien's world it is not the one I am, we are in

It does seem clear social roles will change as a result of the "great simplification". A return to an agrarian system, rather than our current industrial agriculture method of supplying food, is highly likely. In one of his more recent short books - "Electrifying the Titanic" - Ophuls sets forth some ideas about how society might be organized once the carbon pulse is over. Social and economic systems depend for their operation not just on what the components are, but how they are interconnected and influence each other.
But Ophuls, like Hagens in his discussion here, recognizes that getting from where we are now to a sustainable relationship with the biosphere is going to be a difficult and chaotic transition - Nate refers to "the next few decades". Pioneering ecosociologist William Catton wrote "Overshoot" about our situation - his later book was called "Bottleneck." Speaking metaphorically, I wonder how narrow that impending bottleneck will be. I suggest to anyone reading this comment to the end that Jem Bendell's work deserves examination.

Applied science hasn't implied wisdom. Everyone (especially children) enjoys magic tricks but enslaving the world to our bidding is no trick. There will always be clever people who will find others to pay for shortcuts and ways to profit. I haven't a better idea for a more enlightened archetype unfortunately.

So ai will probably be smarter than people in say 3 years. In 5 there will be no reason to employ a human. Because of cheap humanoid robots. All these people will be unemployed and out of the workforce and possibly the economy. It’s unclear whether governments will keep them alive with food.
So the number of people who control an ai will be the 1% to the current 1% who only use someone else’s ai. Ai will make everything better cheaper and faster so a see a surge in productivity. B2E will be the only game in town. E in this case means elites. Because nobody else will have any money. They can hurl themselves in waves at robot guardians who’s skin is 3D printed titanium armor ideally optimized to take a magazine of ar15 rounds without harm. He has mentioned in an oblique manner, in a handful of his videos, the "impossibility" of redirecting surplus wealth and resources from wealthier, more developed nations to more impoverished, less developed ones.
I guess the smaller-scale analog to this, in the view of most economists, would be that employers mustn't pay all their workers a fair wage, since in order to keep many difficult/undesirable jobs filled one needs to keep a certain proportion of the workforce in desperate financial straits.
Another concern Hagens might have with a more equitable redistribution of wealth and resources is that, with the human population being as large as it is (and still growing), the claim on future energy and resources simply wouldn't be able to stand it.
