Excellent! I'm planning a solo loop this summer. I'm going to do it clockwise in a kayak. 1st night Mill Lake, 2nd night around Hincks Island area, and 3rd night the Foxes. I'll be watching for that Hincks Island beach :)
we are making our way there for the first time this September 2rd. as we are cautious tandem canoe paddlers, what would be some possible routes fora single overnight adventure while we leave our camper in the site we booked at Lake George camp ground? Wife and I are paddling a Wenonah 19' Itasca(open canoe). Novice/intermediate paddlers from Missouri. assuming the weather is decent enough(we can pick our best day out of the 7 we are staying in the park. would really like to get out to the bay rather than staying in Collins inlet but would do that if advised so. Mill lake looks like a decent day's paddle to a campsite there
@@travishardesty1005 No need to paddle up to Mill Lake. If the weather permits paddle on the south side where the most interesting islands are. If the wind/waves are a bit too much paddle the channel until you reach a beautiful rock campsite. You will know it when you see it.

Hi, this comment comes from New Zealand, I’m Canadian and have boated around the island. My daughter worked and lived in Killarney back in the day. My home town is Bala and I’m currently sailing around the world. So why comment on your video? Two reasons to comment, one to thank you for triggering great memories and second to let you know my plans to include Philip Edward on our circumnavigation of the world. Thank you! Really enjoyed this. I've camped a lot on the French and Pickerel Rivers as well as the Key River outlet. And given the extreme shield conditions, it can be pretty hit-and-miss with a hammock. Any opinion if this area looks more promising for hammocking?
Although there are definitely a lot of smaller islands without much in the way of trees, the main island (Philip Edward) has enough forested areas that I think it would not be too difficult to find suitable hammock locations.
You know the video is good when you forget you’re doing it yourselves, always think there’s a camera crew following you guys. Thoroughly enjoyable, wicked blue skies for your trek.

Hey John, thanks for watching. We took that trip in mid-May a few years ago. Killarney Park has just opened the parking lot at the launch site that weekend.
Tks for sharing. We are planning to go there this July 2021. I wonder how many campsite along the route, I mean do they have firepit, thunderbox etc there.
No maintained campsites. This is mostly all Crown Land so you are basically stopping and camping wherever you want. Some areas have firepit rings of stone that others have built, but no thunder boxes. I think there might be one or two sites that are part of Killarney Provincial Park along Collins Inlet, but the island itself is Crown Land with lots of nice areas to pitch a tent.
I love these trips! I am just getting into canoeing fairly seriously and my daughter seems to like it as well. She isn't keen on camping yet, but there's still hope. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Colette, thanks for watching! Those paddles are made by a company called Grey Owl, and they are the Raven model. They are a 'bent-shaft' design and are made out of carbon fibre with wide blades. They are light-weight and very efficient and most useful for powering the boat through large open bodies of water.
Always enjoy your videos. My son and I head into Quetico every May right after ice out and most always have that wind to deal with, is what it is. If anyone ever tells you that you need a kayak for big water just remind them that this is Canoe Country. Canoes have been on the big lakes forever. Hey Bryan, We did not buy our maps at MEC, although I know they stock a lot of maps. We used two maps - one was a Chrismar Map "Philip Edward Island & Area" the other was a Jeff'sMap "Killarney & The Georgian Bay Coast" Both were purchase at the London Paddle Shop (Nova Craft Canoes) in London, Ontario. Have not paddled (yet) the Shawanaga Island area , so have not looked for a map of that location myself.

That is a 30 litre food barrel made by Eureka. I don't think they make those anymore, but it's basically the same as the blue barrels sold at other outfitters. Having the harness is very helpful.

But this year I like to upgrade to light weight canue and looking for digestions from experience canuers, I will be doing lots of solo but would like to have option to do tendem, some portaging, in lakes and open waters as well ,planing to go around Philip Edward Island as well, some one suggested 14f ultra light 39 pounds Algonquin Prospector as a good option for my needs, what is your opinion on it?Thank you in advance.
Hey Tanya, When it comes to canoes there are lots of choices out there. May companies make a "Prospector" model in various lengths and different hull materials. We have been using Nova Craft canoes for many years and love their boats. I think your choice of a 14ft boat is the perfect size for a solo trip, but I think it would be way too small for any serious tandem excursion. Ultra light weight canoes can be expensive, so you might consider renting a similar model that you are interested in from an outfitter first to see if it actually meets your needs and handles well.
@@tanyalongworth8495 Killarney Kanoes has some very good rental canoes, and they have a variety as well, so you can check out a few different types. As a bonus, you can paddle through the northern part of Killarney PP, which has some beautiful camp sites.
Hey Darrell, agreed - I wouldn't want to flip while out in any canoe, but having a spray deck actually minimizes your chance of flipping as it keeps the water out of the canoe. It's the water from a rouge wave or a series of waves that can seriously disrupt the centre of balance in your boat causing you to first list and then tip. And you aren't actually 'tied' in. You do have an elasticized skirt around your waist, but if you should tip you merely 'slide' out of the boat, as can be attested by Brad and his girlfriend who tipped this same boat while negotiating a mean set of rapids. The boat tipped and within seconds they were out and beside it. The canoe was floating thanks to its float tanks and thanks to the spray cover all their gear was still within the canoe and nothing was lost down river.
Experience in a kayak would come in handy in a wet exit, as you've learned to get used to sliding out, usually while under water. I'm really liking the spray deck on that canoe - it has a lot of great features.

There probably are bears in the area, although we did not see any. I know that there are lots of bear sightings in Killarney Provincial park, just north of PEI. Philip Edward Island itself has many large trees that are suitable for hanging food from, but you are correct, a lot of the smaller offshore islands are very rocky with few trees. I have camped on many of these rocky islands throughout Georgian Bay and often just left my sealed food barrel sitting on the ground, and have never had an issue. I believe bears are more of a problem in the popular (crowded)parks like Algonquin and Killarney where a lot of people have been careless in the past with food storage that ultimately attracts bears.
Another great video. One question: When you are guys are paddling, how you keep your video footage from showing up "shaky?" I tried to shoot video on a calm, small lake the other day, to get some footage of a heron - but the moving water alone made it shake all over the place. Thanks!
Most modern digital cameras and camcorders and individual lenses for DSLR's have a built-in "image stabilization" function. Find that switch, or more likely, find that option in the menu and turn it 'on'- that should help a lot.
Love that rocky open environment! Great with that canoe cover for extra protection from waves. Are there less bugs out there or was it just the season?
Great video - a perfect "quickie" trip for an extended long weekend. How did you find navigating all the small islands? Were you able to do it strictly with map, or did you have a GPS to help out?

It is mostly crown land and you do not need a permit to camp there, However you do need a parking pass from Killarney Provincial Park to leave your vehicle at the access point.
