امانت علی خان کے لیے بھی ویسی عزت ہے دل میں جیسی خانصاحب مہدی حسن کے لیے۔۔ لیکن اس میں کوئی شک نہیں کہ مہدی صاحب نے ایسی غزل گائی کہ اس وقت کے تمام خیالیوں (خیال گائیکوں) نے بھی غزل پر ضرور طبع آزمائی کی۔۔ جبکہ اس سے قبل غزل کو بہت ہی معیوب سمجھا جاتا تھا۔۔ مہدی صاحب نے جو معیار قائم کیا وہ بلکل کلاسیکی موسیقی والا معیار تھا۔۔

بلاشبہ مہدی حسن صاحب بدِصغیر کے ایک اعظیم فنکار ہیں مگر لتامنگیشکر نے مہدی حسن کے بارے میں نہیں بلکہ مرحوم محمد رفع صاحب کے بارے میں کہا تھا کےمحمد رفع صاحب کے آواز میں بھگوان بولتا ہے
Adil. Lata ne hi mehdi hassan hi ke bare mei kaha tha. Rafi saheb se Wo naraz thi. Gana bhi lata ne rafi ke sath chor diya. 10 sal unhon ne rafi ke sath gana nahi gaya tha
You are wrong. She said it about Mehdi Hassan. Not Mohammad Rafi.
Interesting mystical and mysterious people. Their motivation to music is not fame or money. They may have encountered these along the way but it is not their aim, it seems to me. I think they sing to, or for God, somehow in a curious way. Hence they are authentic. Possibly the only thing I can contribute about these old singers and songs: "Less is more". In my experiments trying to record and dis-assemble these old songs...I found the more we 'strain' physically or 'swank' individualistically...These make the songs sound ugly and boring and wrong. The more they 'flow' and are sung 'neutral' without 'Tootie-Pootie' affectation, it seems they are more authentic. However, this seems contradicted, for example, by Noor Jehan's Anjuman songs, e.g. 'Suraj Wango' from Qaidi film. This is very forced and loud and excessive - but - in the 'service' of Punjabicisation [ new word!] of that 80s over-the-top media of the time. Also, in Noor Jehan's unbelievable performance of ghazal 'Payyam Aye Hain'. This is so extreme and her coughing in the bridges is testament to how 'More is more' [!] with that 80s era... But mostly they seem to 'soft pedal' and catch a 'flow' that gives that rapture to the music. Irfan these are all lovely songs and singers you introduce us to. I just wish I had been there at the time...An EMI drummer said to me, "In the 80s we knew we were hot and the creativity was unbelievable during the Anjuman-Sultan Rahi films. We also knew it would end. Which it did"... He said Anjuman songs' drumming ensembles took 8 hours to practise and remember the percussion patterns for the big Anjuman songs like 'Hae Ve Malangia' ['Malanga' film] but they recorded in in one take at Mall Road EMI Studios...Sad I missed all this. But the films are wonderful and music... ; ) K
