I've had my Rossi Overland Coach Gun for about 30 years. I keep a 7" rifled 357 adaptor in the right barrel and keep the left barrel available for 12 gauge. Usually, bird shot. It's a great set up for a general kick-around gun.
The show tube is not actually rifling for bullets or slugs it's to stop the wad from spinning when you're shooting bird shot do not shoot 45 long colts through the choke tube with the rifling
I came here to say this. He claims to be a Gun guy" but didn't understand the fully rifled 16" barrel is why it's a 45lc rifle. To be fair not one UA-cam channel has gotten it right. Real gun people would know TC worked those out 30yrs ago.
@@RattlesnakeDefense the gun has a fully rifled barrel except for where the choke tube screws in you put a smooth trip in to shoot rifle bullets you put the straight rifled choke in when you want to shoot bird shot because it stops the wad from spinning as it exits the barrel which gives you a better pattern

I love my Rossi R92 carbines and rifle. This looks interesting... but I'd rather Rossi come out with a line of switch-barrel single shots - kind of like the old H&R's. I bet they would sell fast.
They had one called the Rossi Wizard. I like the company but those were discontinued. They weren't really known for stellar accuracy and had other issues. My friend had one in 45-70 and never was able to get it zeroed as good as he wanted, the rear sight fell off on day 1, and after he missed the first deer he tried to shoot with it he just had no confidence in the gun and never used it again
I just picked up one of these a few weeks ago. So far I love mine. As far as the choke goes, it is reverse threads. Once I figured that out it came right out no problem.
Can it handle other rounds with .451/.452 diameter bullets, like 45 Schofield, .45 ACP and 454 Casual? If it was multi caliber in addition to the 410 that would be very intriguing to me, especially from the survival perspective.
When mentioning (6:20) the "down side" of a Judge, the Judge is a pistol so it can't compare to this Rossi Survival rifle. A Rossi/Taurus "Circuit Judge" is a great little carbine that also shoots the .45lc and .410. Mine has never had a problem with the chokes and I've had it for 9 or 10 years. It shoots the same rounds as this firearm and has a 5 round capacity, so you can keep it loaded with a mix of .45lc and .410 shells, up to 3 inch. You can load it with whatever you want and keep a bullet/shell holder attached to it for extra rounds. The Circuit Judge comes in a blued version or stainless version or a polymer version with fiber optic sights and a picatinny rail. This single shot is a lot cheaper than the Circuit Judge but it's a single shot, break barrel and should be a lot cheaper. It's a cool little firearm that would be great for a kid to learn on and be able to use multiple calibers with. It might be better to go for the Circuit Judge and get the same capabilities but have a 5 round capacity and a much higher quality firearm. Of course, there's a big price difference and the Survival is cheaper.
I do not disagree. The judge has many good purposes. The circuit judge has seemed to vanished the last few years, and the second hand price is on the rise. I do not mean to talk down to the pistols, just that as this gun, it has its limitations.
I bought one of the Rossi MP (matched pair) in .410/3" and .22 WMR. Great "truck" gun and it has a light 18" bbl Mod. choke with bead. The rifle bbl is 21", and I mounted a 30mm red-dot scope. Works well as a camp gun, and pest-control. The gun store owner told me he sold all of the .22 LR quickly, but no one wanted the .22 Mag. I paid a touch over $200 for it during the Scamdemic.
.22 Mag is quite a nice round. FMJ bullets are much harder than .22 LR, and penetrate accordingly. Adding 50% more velocity with a rifle barrel is helpful, too.
This would be handy in some other calibers as well. Thinking 357 mag and 44 mag. Even a 10 mm would be cool. Or some of the intermediate rifle cartridges. 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC. Would like one in 41 Rem mag but know that will never happen.
Look on Rossi website. They are coming out with the LWC. Small single shot chambered in 350 legend, 357 mag, 556 NATO, 300 blackout, 6.5 creadmore and I think 44 mag. Coming soon!!
So we have here a kind of variant on the old Thompson Contender - but with a shoulder stock. If they would add interchangeable barrels then they would have something.
Rossi used to offer the matched pair barrels in a few calibers, usually 20g and .22. Or .410 and .22, in their break open "H&R clone" model. Those were nice machines and relatively inexpensive.
@@RequisiteFunctionwe had a Rossi trifecta growing up, 243, 20ga, .22lr great gun for kids to beat up on a farm. Super stiff trigger though, made it hard to shoot accurately
@claytonatkinson865 Wow, that seems like a really nice set to have. Very versatile. It sucks the trigger was rough. Probably too late now, but I wonder if a bit of filing on the guts would've helped any? I only had the 20g Rossi single, mid 90s issue, but not from a set. Idk if the internals are different or anything on the "non-set" versions, but it seemed ok for what it was. I know they look the same, but maybe they are not. I know some older singles are not always appropriate for turning into rifles because they aren't set up for the pressure of rifle cartridges. There's even a video of a guy who blew the firing pin out of his old Stevens shotgun when he converted it to .22 Hornet.
I have a Rossi Matched Pair youth model. I bought it 17 years ago at Walmart. It has a 20ga barrel and a .22lr barrel. I have used that as my go-to survival gun for years. I liked it so much I bought one for my son. Rossi also used to make a three-barreled version they called the "Trifecta". You could choose which barrels you wanted for both the Matched Pair and the Trifecta like 22lr, 22wmr, 20ga, 243, 44mag, etc. They even made a 50-cal inline muzzleloader barrel for them.
in my rossi brawler 45colt/ 410single shot i also shoot 45acp target loads 750to 800 fps using metric nitrile o rings from harbor freight . take o ring over case head into groove. it keeps 45acp round from falling down barrel. when action shut compressing tight around case . ejection with loaded round or empty great. o rings reusable. sizes 8x2mm and 8.8x1.9 mm works best. If your shooting 45 colt in it you wouldnt want the rifled choke in it anyway. The barrel is already rifled and depending on what torque you use to install the rifled choke there is almost no way to gauruntee the rifling lining up. It would destroy your accuracy.
Thanks, that was a very honest review, I have been looking at getting one in just 410, but I will now consider the 45LC as well., Cheers Oops, I have subscribed.
I just bought one, sighted in a red dot, and took to range today. I got way better results with cowboy style 45 long colt ammo, like basically ~2MOA groups at 50 yards from shoulder fired, in other words within 1-2" of the bullseye. Quite good enough for me for hunting. The shotgun side, wow, it really spreads out the birdshot. With the straight through choke, the pellets at 6 ft were already like 18" spreadout. At 7 yards the pellets were like 3' circle. Will try the other choke (meant for bird shot) next time to range. Overall, I am VERY satisfied with this, and double so, considering I paid $299 !!! This is an absolute steal. I'd say this is a much buy for ranchers, offroaders, truck guns, and just to have one, it's so affordable, well built and accurate. Also I need to try 410 slugs... HINT: do no push in the 410 shotshells all the way in yourself, just push in lightly and close breech, and this way the ejector will be in right position to pop it out after firing. On one round, I pushed the shell past the ejector and then it would not pop out after opening the action. I had to use my CB antenna LOL to easily push out the shell. No room for even a finger nail in there...
Can you imagine something like this in a double-barrel? That would be sweet! Of course, the unwritten rule is, add a barrel and charge 6X the price. I can go to the store right now and pick up a cheap 20" break-open single barrel for a little over $100. But go to a 20" double-barrel coach gun and you can't touch it for less than $600. Makes absolutely no sense.

the sound is because the .45 has to jump from the shell to the rifling at 3in. so theres a bunch of power blowing past the bullet before it gets into the rifling.
That would be a nice truck, camper, or even home defense for people who want something but aren't really financially able to or interested in getting something more.
I purchased one of these guns , my choke tubes did come out but both had damaged threads , not sure but I think from the mis threaded barrel. They will reinstall however and turn freely after the choke passes the threaded section
Good rifle. I built myself one of those many moons ago. Jugoslavian flare gun + 12 ga adapter + 18 inch 45 Colt adapter for 2 ga. JB Weld. Cherry shoudler stock , forearm. Good up to and included about 150 yards. Over 1000 rounds through it, no hickups.
Swear I did something similar.. a polish flare gun with 45lc/410 adapter. Got a 410 to 380 acp adapter that was 12 inches long. JB welded the adapter and barrel of 380 in place. And it never fails.
@@brotherkeeper2800 Cool. Turns out I ain't the only one . BTW., I've been wanting to put together similar "frankenstain" in ,380(suppressed for backyard work on groundhogs) for a while now. There's a company named chaszel , which makes threaded end adapters for many calibers .
I bought the brawler and was a bit disappointed in some ways, but still really like it. I think that it should have had the choke this one has and it'd be great. I think I will get one of these as .45 Colt is my go-to and this would be a great truck gun along with the little brawler. I feel like that was definitely practical accuracy and a great little game getter. Hope you can get the choke out. Try pouring some heated oil along the edge and let it stand upright. The thinner oil will run into the threads easier and might help loosen it. I always use anti-sieze compound for BP rifle plugs on my chokes. One tiny spot will typically cover it. Shame they didn't do that at the factory or maybe put some silicone oil at least.
Be both know this is not a bench rest gun, and if you expect great groups from a shotgun that shoots revolver ammo, then good luck. This is a utility rifle and I test it on that expectation.
When people talk about survival guns why does everyone always go cheap if it's supposed to be for their survival that doesn't make any sense you would think you would tell people to buy something that's performs flawlessly if your life's in danger 🥴
@@mrmann44 I don’t wear panties and there was never a long in 45 Colt. That comes from unaware people mixing up 38 short Colt and 38 long Colt and then when 45 Colt came around they stupidly thought it was the long because they never bothered to check. Also, I’m in no way affiliated with you so don’t call me “Baby”. It’s gross.
So neither one are technically a Choke. One is merely a thread protector for when using 45 long cold and 410 slugs The other one that's got the dimples on the inside is actually a wad catcher. So that when the Wad Hits the dimples, it stops the spinning, so the shot stays closer together. It's the same that comes with the circuit judge. Which is basically just a better option of this if you have the money.
@@RattlesnakeDefense Right on, I'm glad you figured. It will definitely be more enjoyable for you now and a lot more fun. I know I love my circuit judge. Which is basically what you have only a 5 shot instead of a single shot.
I'm hoping they will make the Rossi Tuffy Survival in 357 magnum. I'm not much of a fan of all these 45 Colt/.410 guns as the ammo is so friggin expensive. With a 357 magnum you have the option to shoot 38 special. Maybe Rossi will make interchangeable barrels for this gun in the future.
now picture if tehy still made 410 flare rounds. it would be the perfect backpack rifle. light weight, .45 LC for predator defense, bird shot for small game hunting if you are in trouble. flares to signal for help.
I just be completely okay if it was Smooth Bore just consider the 45 short slugs and if you can get a 22 caliber adapter that would be a damn perfect survival gun
@@RattlesnakeDefense Ok, now I read the description. I had the exact same problem.... And I like the gun as much as you do. Need to make a little case that fits in the backpack... and has it's own dainty shoulder straps. This one is WAY easier to carry than the little folding shotguns, which have to be a couple inches (or four) longer, kick like mules, and pattern like blunderbusses. The .45 Colt is a wonderful carbine round. Quiet, docile, but hits hard.
I dont know how handy it would be for my household. 45 colt is kinda obsolete in these parts. 410 pricy when on the shelf. For me the same configuration in 12 gauge with chamber adapters for whatever would make more sense. The combo guns make more sense than any of these . Id give my left nut for a cheap,( less than 800.), combo in a deer caliber and 12 gage. But i live in grizly, elk, and moose country so maybe my opinion is off the mark.

Prairie dogs...fox...skunk and even a 2 yr. Red Angus bull we shot and ate broken leg. Of course I would prefer to have the Swift or the 25-06 or the 7mm Rem Mag but for the cost who wants to leave an expensive rifle in the pickup or the job box? The Rossi has proven to be reliable accurate and for the price...it doesn't get pampered...
pretty cool, i like the little mount on it , my survivor does not have that, same situation on mine dont shoot the colts with the choke, specifically states it in my survivor manual, good farm gun , tractor gun

I knows 45acp is for pistol.
Kinda reminds me of the old snake charmer. Thanks enjoy 😉
I was thinking the same thing.
Except that I think I might like this one better.
I had a Snake Charmer back in the '80s. Rarely used it.
Still make snake charmer
Dad gum it RSD, watched another of your videos and have to go buy a new rifle now. I mean, I love you - but my wife hates you pretty hard.
Rock island armory is a lot less coin and being a 20ga its superior in performance with shot. A 20ga slug is a good deer killer as well.
Interesting gun!! Keep on keeping on.
How about some 340 gr WFN hardcast at 30,000 psi. ?
Nice but I'll stick with my HiPoint 995.
That is a very interesting and unique solution. I like it.
Nice review buddy. I might get one myself.
💯👍
My neighbor bought one for his wife
My rossi circuit judge has reverse threads
Yea, so does my survival rifle, smooth brain move on my part
That think costs more than a mossburg maverick. Why ?
You mention accuracy but you showed none. Next time try a bench rest and groupings, other wise you are just pissing against the wind.
Be both know this is not a bench rest gun, and if you expect great groups from a shotgun that shoots revolver ammo, then good luck. This is a utility rifle and I test it on that expectation.
I’m like you, I like the single action old school style!!👍🏼👍🏼
I reload, didn't see this question. Tuffy only standard pressure loads??? Would be more effective with Tier 2 pressure. Anyone ??
It's not rated for +P 45 colt. Safe thing would to be to use standard loads.
Might be a good little gun to have in the tractor cab on the farm.
Of course it will affect the accuracy learn something
Decent priced firearm. But hard to get and not Cheap ammo.
Any chance the choke tubes are left-hand threaded?
Well crap
Maybe think about putting the camera by the Target
Damned good video, thank you.
When people talk about survival guns why does everyone always go cheap if it's supposed to be for their survival that doesn't make any sense you would think you would tell people to buy something that's performs flawlessly if your life's in danger 🥴
That way when it’s stolen out of their truck, they didn’t lose a lot of money.
That seems like a LOT of money for something so simple.
Colt never designated 45 Colt as short or long Colt. It’s irrelevant what’s stamped on consumer products, the only 45 Colt cartridge is 45 Colt.
If it wasn't a moniker that stuck around, you wouldn't have your panties in a bunch feeling the need to write about it in 2024.
45 LONG COLT BABY! 😘
It’s gross.
Ive got the Brawler , this is next
Same here
So neither one are technically a Choke.
You are spot on. They may make chokes for this, but the included 'chokes' are just to go between shot and 45 Colt.
@@RattlesnakeDefense Hope you were able to get the thread protector Out cause the wad ketch actually works pretty good.
When using shot
I did, its reverse thread and I was being a smooth brain.
@@RattlesnakeDefense Right on, I'm glad you figured. It will definitely be more enjoyable for you now and a lot more fun.
I know I love my circuit judge.
Which is basically what you have only a 5 shot instead of a single shot.
It would be perfect if it had a magazine
I'm hoping they will make the Rossi Tuffy Survival in 357 magnum. I'm not much of a fan of all these 45 Colt/.410 guns as the ammo is so friggin expensive. With a 357 magnum you have the option to shoot 38 special. Maybe Rossi will make interchangeable barrels for this gun in the future.
Grease your Chokes ...
I'm dumb, it's left handed thread
@@RattlesnakeDefense Not dumb at all, consider it experience and also S--t happens..
That would be a grant deer rifle for where I hunt
Why would you want a rifled choke for shot?
I had a 6.5 inch judge and it might be because the wide pellet spread. I shot five 7 shot rounds and they covered the whole target
No laser sight or bayonet mount?
Who was you talking about when you said someone worked in a gun shop all their adult life because enough said
Well me, but I feel pretty dumb about getting the choke mixed up. I will pin a correction later today.
Can put a 22lr , adapter, for back up ammo.
is it legal in california?
i can not find any info there.
as this democrat controlled state has stupid and weird anti gun safety type of gun laws.
For whatever the reason, it does not appear on the approved list, but I make no claims to understand CAs gun laws.
now picture if tehy still made 410 flare rounds. it would be the perfect backpack rifle. light weight, .45 LC for predator defense, bird shot for small game hunting if you are in trouble. flares to signal for help.
I just be completely okay if it was Smooth Bore just consider the 45 short slugs and if you can get a 22 caliber adapter that would be a damn perfect survival gun
Not wasting my money🙄🙄🙄
LEFT-HAND THREADS ON CHOKE TUBES. Turn CLOCKWISE to remove!
I know now, it's top on the video description. I had a dumb.
🇦🇺😎👍$625 in Australia
I dont know how handy it would be for my household. 45 colt is kinda obsolete in these parts. 410 pricy when on the shelf. For me the same configuration in 12 gauge with chamber adapters for whatever would make more sense.
The combo guns make more sense than any of these . Id give my left nut for a cheap,( less than 800.), combo in a deer caliber and 12 gage. But i live in grizly, elk, and moose country so maybe my opinion is off the mark.
Great rifle but the only DOWN side is finding 410 and 45 long colt shells! LOL
A good UTV gun !
Will this also shoot the .454 casull?
man do I miss my grandma's snake charmer right now, totally underrated firearm!
I'm getting one of these lol.
Mossberg HS12 can be had for around $500. YOU BE THE JUDGE 😂
Sorry I do not watch videos with Ads, as ads contain Malware that is killing Peoples computers. Get a real job and a life!!!
New England Firearms had the 45/410 survivor rifle too years ago
W e l lare you happy with it or not
Looks like a handy unit! Bought a Brawler other day to throw in the job box. With the chain saws and the rest the tools use on a daily basis. Got a Rossi single shot 223 it has been real handy!
It piss3s me off they don't make more rifles threaded, including this one.
Brother, if you like this gun your gonna love a circuit judge. I bought the original version of this little shotty 40 years ago for my son when he turned 6 and handed it off to his son when he turned 6. I believe it was called a 'Snake Charmer' back then. Fun gun to play with, I'd suggest trying skeet one handed for giggles.
Nice review. Thanks.
Excellent!
do you guys think there is going to be some stupid catch where, if you are shooting 410ga out of it, it becomes a short-barreled shotgun, and you have an instant felony?
i WONDER IF TT WILL SHOOT 45COLTPLUSS p ROUNDS?
GIVEN IT'S A rOSSI qUALITY IS NOT THERE FOR HEAVY LOADS.
