The camera has been rather kind to them actually- I much preferred the sixes! Fundamentally good bells but one is in the wrong tower and the other desperately need some trap doors opening upstairs.

Very lovely ringing in some cracking rings.
No lumps of lead in the belfry in anyof the towers you visited.

Shame that the bells at Penarth are in a small tower, they could be something amazing! The back four at Caerphilly sound glorious!

Pernarth has a gorgeous set of F# 8. Taylor's bells in my opinion regardless of age always seem to sound so clear in their intonation and pitch. A quality I cant say I notice in bells from other foundries.

The camera has been very kind to Penarth bells here - they are lovely, but just not as clear or crisp as this in the ringing area. No doubt they are a fine ring, as are Caerphilly, but the towers or ringing areas don't always do them justice. Like all foundries, Taylors have had their ups and downs, but their "golden era" (1896-1950s) rings are generally excellent - we were lucky enough to visit a few of these rings during the week.

@@simonbellringer one thing I desperately wish was more of a thing in the US was Change Ringing. Only ones I know of are a ring in Philadelphia and a set of 10 I believe in the Washington National Cathedral. Also interesting to see that you guys did a set of rounds in reverse! Since I got into change ringing I never even knew you could do that!

@@DrpanProductions There are 40 or so towers scattered all over the USA, have a look at this very good documentary on ringing in the USA, it is very informative about the basics of Change Ringing in General, as well as a little tour of American towers - ua-cam.com/video/g5ZaF8jlhGs/v-deo.html There may be a tower not too far from you.

@@DrpanProductions jump call-changes aren't common but are excellent for bell-control - I have videos of us doing this on other Lilliputters Tours.
As for other towers in America, you are best off checking the NAGCR website (www.nagcr.org/), or Dove's Guide (dove.cccbr.org.uk/dove?geo_region=321), they'll tell you what bells you have in the States (the answer is rather more than maybe you realise!)

I think the intonation hasn't always been the case, it was modern Simpson tuning that Taylor's developed in the last 19th that changed things.
If you look at St Paul's Cathedral they are old style bells, some say they sound like scaffolding falling on the ground.
To me they are the sound of London and as much as I love modern style bells to change the tuning at St Paul's would amount to sacrilege in my opinion.
What I do like is heavy pre war Taylor tenors, they are magnificent and none in my opinion can ever beat York Minster.
I was lucky enough to ring at the National Cathedral in DC, they are Whitechapel bells and sound magnificent and part of that is the tower accoustics are great.
