  • Meeting characters in Disney Parks and Resorts can be a very stressful experience! Figuring out what to say and do with a mouse-let alone a princess-is often less than magical, but it doesn’t have to be! Check out this guide to meeting characters to learn how to turn such nerve-wracking encounters into magical memories. We’ll walk you through how to prepare to meet Disney characters, how to converse with them when you do and tips to personalize the experience.
Then, stay tuned to our UA-cam channel because we’re about to launch an exclusive series featuring our most memorable and entertaining interactions with Disney characters! We're of course sharing our encounters for your viewing pleasure, but we’re also hoping these videos serve as inspiration for you to make your own unique, magical memories. Frequently, children are more excited to meet characters than adults as they often feel more at ease in meet and greet situations. While our character videos are meant to be fun for the whole family, they're specifically geared for adults to help increase comfort and foster creative ideas and personalized approaches to character interactions. Autograph books are great souvenir options for little ones especially, but our meet and greets feature everything from funny props to rather odd requests, the occasional sentimental souvenir and even a practical item or two to elicit amusing, original experiences. For adults who feel awkward or uncomfortable in a basic meet and greet environment or for anyone looking to plus up their character interactions, we highly recommend this customized approach, and we invite you to share your experiences with us!
We’ll post the first couple character videos in December to help you escape some of the bustle of the season and indulge in a little Disney magic. After that, we’ll continue the series with regularity next year and follow up this post with part two of our guide to interacting with characters covering the logistical side of meet and greets, the dos and don’ts and tips and tricks. We hope our unique approach to making lasting memories with characters serves as inspiration for you to customize your next meet and greets.
While we prepare to share our favorites with you, we’d love to hear all about your favorite memories with characters. What made these memories special for you?

Really great video idea. We have witnessed some awkward experiences so your suggestion on preparing prior to the trip is a good idea. Thank you for sharing all the helpful ideas.

That is so nice of you to say! Thank you so much for watching and for this feedback. We really, truly appreciate it, and we're thrilled to hear that these tips are helpful for you and others! We too have seen our fair share of lackadaisical character interactions, and that just shouldn't be at Disney. Meeting characters is all part of the magic, and we're so happy to help people get comfortable with it so they too can have unique and memorable experiences! :)

Great tips! I have never really thought about these interactions, but totally makes sense to help them out!

Thank you--that is so sweet of you! We appreciate your support and feedback so much! We had that mindset for years too and didn't prioritize character meet and greets at all. Now that we strive to make them personal, they're one of our favorite things to do in the parks! It can be so fun and memorable, and we're thrilled if our experiences and tips can help others share in that magic. :)

Which characters were your favorites to meet?

That is a great question! We have so many fun character experiences that we can't wait to share with you, but there are definitely a few that stand out as our favorites. Our favorite joint meet and greet is our first personalized one with Mickey in Disneyland way back in 2012 that serves as the inspiration for our upcoming, "Will You Sign My..." series. My (Heather's) other favorites are one I did recently with Donald Duck and one I experienced last fall with some amazing friends. We met Olaf on a whim, and he danced his, "In Summer" song while the Photopass Photographer sang the lyrics. It was too fun and so special! :) I also love Brian's other favorite with Ralph and Vanellope from Wreck it Ralph/Ralph Breaks the Internet. Thanks so much for watching and for your fun question!

We are planning a trip in nov to wdw and want to know if it is worth it to get a photo pass, esp for these interactions. We have a 4yo and 13 yo who will both want separate experiences... do we just buy one for the fam? (Sorry just started planning) they both love Disney - thank you so much!

Hello, thank you so much for watching and for your question! I apologize for the delay getting back to you; we have been hit with a nasty cold/flu, but I'm grateful that we're on the upswing now. That is so exciting that you're heading to WDW in the fall, and what a great question! I'm really happy to help you figure that out as it depends on what is best for you and your family.
First, you only need to purchase one Disney Memory Maker/Photopass for the whole family assuming all of your tickets will be linked with the account that makes the purchase. That's a great thing because it isn't cheap, but there's a pretty substantial discount if you purchase it in advance. (Currently, it's $169.00 if purchased three or more days in advance and $199.00 otherwise.)
If you're meeting characters in the parks at character meet and greets, there will be a Photopass photographer (or in some instances a wall mounted Photopass camera) at every interaction. There will also be Photopass photographers stationed at iconic picture spots in the parks to take family or individual photos and Magic Shots that include surprise characters or animated videos in the final product (these are fun--make certain to request them if you're interested). Both of these scenarios are great selling points for Memory Maker, but my personal favorite Photopass shots are always the ride photos/videos. Not every ride includes it but many do, and it's a great way to have candids of your family enjoying the magic! If you're doing character meals though (think Chef Mickey's, Crystal Palace, Tusker House, etc.), Photopass photographers are almost always NOT present. There, you'll need to snap your own pictures of the characters and your family. (Occasionally, there will be a photographer stationed with one character like Pluto at Ohana or Belle at Akershus, but it's rare.)
When you do meet the characters at meet and greet locations, you can definitely have separate interactions for your 4 year old and 13 year old with individual pictures--that isn't a problem at all. It can be helpful to explain that to the cast member working directly with the character though when they ask you how many are in your group. They can help you stage it if necessary. At character meals, the character will generally interact with the whole family at one time, but you can take individual pictures there too.
Now, purchasing Memory Maker isn't absolutely critical for character meet and greet interactions as you can take pictures/videos yourself or you can always ask the photographer or character attendant to take a picture with your phone/camera. That is one option to save money. However, we've found that unless you're a really skilled photographer, the Photopass pictures tend to be better. Also, using the service allows you to be more in the moment with the interaction and not thinking about snapping pictures. Notably, this only applies to pictures as the vast majority of Photopass photographers do not take video. If you want video, it's generally best to record it yourself or you can try and ask the character attendant to record it for you on your phone--they're usually happy to do so.
If pictures with the characters are important to you and your family, and you want to be able to relax and enjoy your little one meeting Mickey or your teenager interacting with Cinderella's stepsisters, then I would say it's worth it. Personally, I'm more about the videos with characters so Photopass means less to me in these instances, but I still love the pictures in the end. Plus, we think it's completely worth it for ride photos so we make certain to include it in the budget and save accordingly. Also, the service is included if one of you purchases an annual pass. Annual passes are pricey, but, depending on how long you're staying, it can be cost effective for one person in your party to have one for the discounts and included items.
I hope that helps and makes sense! Please let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything I can do to be of assistance. We're always happy to help you seek the magical too on your Disney vacations, and we can't wait to hear about your trip!
      Thank you again,
      Heather
