Bridal Sewing Techniques do I need bonding to make a corset? It’s a high collared dress with sleeves I’m making and it has no boning in the front or sides.
It is best, yes. Otherwise the gown can look like a drawstring effect. The bodice will just scrunch up as you tighten the ribbon. Don't be intimidated. Boning is easy to work with. I have a few videos on here about it. Also- you'll feel awesome for having taken the leap in your skills!
Thank you very much, for this video! I've been watching your videos for a while, getting a lot of help and inspiration. 🥰 My daughter is going to have her wedding and my task with her gown is just what you showed here. As I'm just a hobby sewer if any time I could also see how you make the modesty panel step by step I'd be really happy for that. Thank you! ☺️🥰☺️

I plan on trying this with an old Grad dress of mine from years ago. I went down about three dress sizes so I really hope it works its such a pretty dress
I want to try this on my old prom dress because I want to wear it for a spring dance at my college, but I grew out of it and it can't zip. I gained a lot of muscle(mostly upperbody) so this may come in handy
Very useful content. Wedding gown can be alot to sew especially when you're making a correction or modification. I'm currently working on one and my arms are so tired alot because of the weight and the size, trying to manuevour when sewing on Tue machine and award sitting positions. But I love what I do. Well done .
Hi! Thanks so much for this video, it really helped with a project I am currently working on. I was just wondering whether it would be possible to ask what thread and needle you use when you are blind stitching the boning to the lining before the gromets. Thanks again!
I am not at the level you are. I loved this video. I make gowns and costumes for myself. I was given a very pretty red sequin, strapless gown that I will be using a part of my “showgirl” costume. I need to make slightly larger. This may be the way to go for me as I really don’t have much hem to take up so no much extra material to add to side seems. Thank you. I gave subscribed so I may learn more wonderful techniques. Thank you.
Omg you really helped me out! Was looking for this for over a year haha hope i can find some other videos from you about this subject.. thank you sooo much
Like your technique! Love the grommets. The only issue I have with the lace up backs is the fact that they are not a cure for every situation in which a gown is too small. I have more than once had clients who brought me gowns that in order to fit would have had to have the lacing go down to the hem or at least as far as the mermaid begins would have had to be laced 6 inches apart. This is not a cure for every situation any more than any other one thing is. Too getting extra fabric in the right color can be almost impossible. I have even had girls by two gowns to get enough fabric to go around them. Almost everything can be done but its not free! Sometimes -especially in the case of prom dresses- its just plain not worth it. I feel that if the lace up must go down past the hips it really doesn't work well.
Great video! I have a question. What if you have a dress that zips up half way, but at the top you have a 5" gap? The lace up will be fine at the top, but what about the bottom half? She wants to really pull the lace up tight, but I don't know whether to trim away fabric just at the lower half of CB or take in the side seams in order for that area to be pulled tight but still have the lace up displayed (not scrunched together edges).
Hi Carina, I would suggest to make a nice triangle starting from 5 “ on the top and down to a point where you want to stop lacing ( normally halfway between waist and hip lines). Just cut access of the fabric. You may even make opening bigger than 5 inch if it will look better on her.
hey! im altering my dress for formal (australian prom), and what the shape/style is is basically a corset top but with a zip in the back, then tulle layers as a skirt with an underlayer of satin. the zip goes from the top of the corset-style top of dress, and around 10-12cm down into the tulle area. the zip hasn't got much non-tulle fabric around it, in the tulle skirt. do you think it would be better to simply take out the zip and sew up the tulle part together, then just have the corset-style top with the corset back? or do you think i could implement the corset back down into the skirt too?
Thanks for the tutorial. When do you need boning? I've seen videos converting zippers to lacing. About half are boning the dress. The rest just reinforce the fabric before adding the eyelets. I have a simple sundress, do I need to bone it?
I love you r show and how you share your expertise and knowledge base. You are incredible. Where can i find the grommets and the c step? The grommets I found leave a rough edge after I compress them. What type of paint did you use to paint the grommets?
Thank you! I have the grommet press info on the products page of my website, www.bridalsewingtechniques.com I just use a big box brand chalk paint. That should be on my site, too? I hope this helps! :)
Navya Chandrika yes. Thank you for your feedback. My newer ones are much closer. I hope they are easier to see! I was more limited with the camera that I shot with in this vid than I am with my new camera. 😊
I have a custom hand press similar to yours for doing different types of snaps and am wondering if/how the C-step bits would fit onto mine to do grommets. Thank you for sharing the link so I can at least experiment.
Thanks for such a detailed tutorial Brenda! It was great except i can't hear the brand of your grommet machine properly. The reason why i'm watching this is that i'm doing my rather tentative steps to sew down my first corset. I don't have a press yet but i have plans to buy one. Which reasonably priced brands you could advice? And what's your attitude towards those hand hole-punchers?
Hey so I got a dress that are several sizes too big an was wondering could I do a corset back instead of taking it in at the sides because there is a lot of fabric that needs to be stitched in that case. Do could I possibly take it in at the sides about an inch and the rest of the fabric trimmed down into a corset back? This is for the bodice part. I do know I'd have to take the lace part at the bottom of the dress off the hem it again then reapply the lace. I don't know whether or not the opening is supposed to be at the knees. My mom says so but I don't know. So I'm just going to hem the length instead of cutting the skirt of moving it up and then stitching it back on. If I was to do that I'd have to remove the hook and eye closures that attach the train to the dress. (I'm trying to have this done the most simplistic way I can, I'd also have to move some if the lace appliques on the dress to alter it) ( do to the amount needed and the lack of money I'd just alter it at school if I can. Fashions.) Sorry about the long comment but I'm curious on what'd you suggest
It's happening hey! Visit my website, www.bridalsewingtechniques.com and go to the products page and look for the link! :) I try to keep all of my regular products listed on there.
Is there a simpler DIY version of this? I'm am armature with a prom dress that doesn't fit my bust. Also, is the modesty panel nessicary or just recommended?
Do you have a video of how to do the faux button bridal backs that are actually a zipper? Im trying yo fo a sheer lace back to a bridal dress but want an invisible zipper with the button look fown the back.
Mrs. LaBolt, where do you buy the other style corset loops and flat satin straps? I have a press and grommets for my leather work but I'm having a hard time finding supplies for bridal corset making that comes in the roll instead of the kits. Blessings and Thank you endlessly for your help.
I don't buy it pre-made. I make them as needed. Yes, that means, I make the loops out of satin cording, or spaghetti straps, or make matching cording, etc. I'm sorry that I don't have a simple, glamorous answer for you! Lol 💕 You're welcome!! 💕
@@BridalSewing I was hoping you bought some of it :) the last time I did a job for a evening gown I made the corset by hand and it took forever. I used one of the under layers for material. I guess I could buy the satin cording that would help a lot. Thank you
I bought the press, and the grommets came with it and all! But the hole punch die doesn't come with it. Where did you get the first die you used to punch the holes before pressing the grommets? Thx!
@@BridalSewing thanks! Actually figured out mine's a little different. I can punch a hole with the actual press by just not putting a grommet on it. Thanks for the reply!
I have watched almost all of your videos and am so impressed. I do have a question i hope you would be willing to answer. What ribbon/tie do you use with the grommet style corset? Thank you so much.
Oh, no prob. Just a regular 5/8 in double faced satin. I get them off of Amazon. I'll try to add the link to my site tonight. Thank you so much for watching. Please tell others! :) ❤
How do You make sure that you don't get any marks on the fabric or pulls in the lace? Have you ever made a huge "fubar" n thought uh-oh that's not good.... ?
Hello. I purchased a pre-owned Lazaro gown online, got a great deal, but thru my own fault, I purchased a dress that was way too small for me. It was marked a size 10 but fits like a 2 (I'm a street size 6). I am curious to know, if the front of the gown fits, but there's a 7 inch gap at the top of the gown in the back, do you think it's possible changing out the zipper to a corset closure can make the gown wearable and attractive? I can pull the gown on over my hips without a problem but there's no way it will ever zip, due to the huge gap. There is a lace overlay that has a lot of empty space (no applique, just tulle, so there is no fabric to let out. ) I'm sure you can't say for sure without seeing it, but have you ever done such an extreme size change on a dress before? Thank you!
Jeri Young oh, I've done that many times. Your question will be whether or not you can find a local seamster to do this for you. It would be best to ask him/her. That's where it counts! :)
Thank you so much for answering my question. At least I know it's possible. I love this dress so much. Thank you for giving me hope and for sharing so much of your knowledge and skill.
Is there a way to do eyelets without grommets? Or are there panels you can buy with grommets already in them? I currently dont have the money to even get a handheld machine.
In principle you could finish the eyelets with hand sewing. Quite a task, however. It would have to be very neat and tight stitching. Something that needs to be trained enough for the result to be pretty enough for a wedding dress. Using grommets is much easier and faster.
The dress has to be quite a bit too big. Add the zipper & the work out the bunching that comes up at the new bottom of the zipper by making a long taper into the center back skirt seam
What size grommets do you use for your shop? I have a short 6 inches or so to corset and wondering if i should go larger or smaller. She wants to keep part of her zipper. Suggestions?
Here it is! And I'll add to my site, too. amzn.to/2KVXfLS I get the white grommets, though. Not usually the nickel. But, that's something you have to reorder all the time, anyways.
Bridal Sewing Techniques it’s at 20 minutes into the video. Sorry I’m very new to sewing. I always wondered how it worked and certain things were achieved so I’ve started trying to learn by watching videos. Thank you for the detailed videos you make and share with us :)
I often use hypo cement. It is listed on & linked to on the products page of my website. It is a clear cement that will help keep that seam together in addition to reinforcing it with stitches. Often, if I'm worried that a knot or a seam with come undone, I will put just a tiny drop on the thread of the knot/stitch. You'll see me do this often in my videos. :)
Bridal Sewing Techniques Bridal Sewing Techniques I see. It’s a technique that can be generally used to reinforce then, I was thinking that this was something specific for corset backs. Thank you so much 😊 is the paint you use on grommets the same one that is linked on your website for bustle hooks?
Hello I know this video is old but could you do this same technique with a dress that has a lace like top I was looking to do this to fit into my homecoming dress since all the tailors in my area are booked
@@BridalSewing so it's kinda hard to explain but the dress the back is like a sheer fabric that has a gold like lace that's very thin it has a zipper in place where I planned on trying to put the corset in
I wouldn't recommend doing this project to a beginner or a seamster with a moderate sewing skill level. This would be for an experienced or professional seamster. You can decide from there what you are comfortable with! :) Good luck. :)
@@BridalSewing okay thank you for helping and I appreciate it :) and of course I just needed an idea because my grandma is the one of knows how to sew very well so again thank you for the help and a very well descriptive detailed video :)
Ug! It *was* on the site. Sometimes they relist differently and then it doesn't work anymore. I'm wondering if it was pulled? I will post a fresh link to it. But, yes, try clips shop.
Wittle bitty paintbrush with matching ivory chalkpaint. This is done after the final adjustment fitting, so there is less likely to be chipping or wearing away by the wedding day. I explain to the bride that the ivory may come off in dry cleaning. The grommets only come in white, nickel, black, and brass, usually. Another seamstress and I joked about buying an oven and diy powder coating a huge batch of grommets. lol
Cherie Miller no. That would probably stay better, but it may be harder to apply. & if you accidently get some on the fabric, it's not water soluble to remove easily right away.
Kathy Basham I may have this wrong, but I'm thinking eyelet is in reference to the hole. The grommet is the metal pieces of hardware, connected together. Eyelets can be punch holes in leather, holes in fabric that have been embroidered/reinforced with stitches, (think eyelet lace), or I'm seeing that some packs of grommets are sold as "eyelets". Does anyone else in the BST community here know of another discriminating features?
I use eyelets for my doll clothes I make and they don't have backing and yes grommets are stronger because I did this same thing to a friend wedding dress
@@BridalSewing That is correct. Eyelet is the whole in general, made in purpose and often for a string or something similar to go through. Grommet is a piece, usually metal, used to reinforce the eyelet.
Hannah Frankenberger some people do. I never have. I think it could prove to be impossible on some of the thicker gowns, but thinner ones should be okay. I could see where hand setting could take longer and be more difficult to get accurate results, but with practice, would probably work just fine.
I hand set grommets with a hammer, but it is a pain in the but and I hope to upgrade to a press soon. (I have also used specialty pliers, but because of the uneven pressure that puts on the grommets they never go in correctly when i used those, so, for now, i stick with the hammer approach.)
Benene Lane I really don't. But, it's not that I'm perfect, but rather, I got it out of my system years ago! I learned the hard way to triple check behind where I am cutting. If I were to ruin a hem, I would probably just replace the layer/ panel that I messed up. I would be very up front about it. I wouldn't try to hide it. I think you need to read your clients, too. Once, I had my sewing machine needle scratch the satin. I let the bride try it on & saw that it wasn't that noticable & she didn't notice it. Then I told her. She was completely chill. One other time, my electrician had left a jagged clamp by my iron and it ripped the tulle on a skirt. I showed them. Told them what happened, and repaired it. Thankfully, it wasn't visible at all. If someone was not understanding and was irate, I would probably just ask for the receipt and the gown and refund their purchase price, not charge my bill, (of course) but they would have to surrender the gown. (Because I just bought it. If they didn't want to surrender the gown and start over, then they would have to agree with me on a damage amount. I am insured, but I wouldn't pull from that over something like this.
Thank you for that useful information, I really have anxiety cutting chiffon in process of the rolled hem . Do you have a video on how you hold your scissors ? It takes me forever with very small scissors. How did you repair the tulle?
Tyrine DeB it is going to vary based upon the local economy. It also depends upon the amount of beadwork/boning changes. But, it should avg about 2 hours worth of work. Whatever that rate would be for your area. :)
I appreciate the Seinfeld jams in the background. I’ll check back in after I attempt this on my bridesmaid dress for the wedding tomorrow 😬

Yes, when quite a bit is needed to be taken in, I do sometimes take the sides in a smidge *and* put in a corset.
Really gorgeous! What did you use to paint the gromets?
Ivory chalk paint
What type of cement should I look for and what brand do you use?
It's happening hey! Visit my website, www.bridalsewingtechniques.com and go to the products page and look for the link! :) I try to keep all of my regular products listed on there.
You are awesome 👌 👏
Is there a simpler DIY version of this? I'm am armature with a prom dress that doesn't fit my bust. Also, is the modesty panel nessicary or just recommended?
No mam. Not on this channel. There may be other channels that have it. This is for pro training.

Lol
💕 You're welcome!! 💕
@@BridalSewing I was hoping you bought some of it :) the last time I did a job for a evening gown I made the corset by hand and it took forever. I used one of the under layers for material. I guess I could buy the satin cording that would help a lot. Thank you
How do you heat set horse hair lace?
If you don’t mind me asking, how much do you usually charge for this kind of alterations?
shandie penalosa around 150$ to $165. Plus added charge for any beadwork that I have to work around.
I bought the press, and the grommets came with it and all! But the hole punch die doesn't come with it. Where did you get the first die you used to punch the holes before pressing the grommets? Thx!
I would email the company you bought from. --Or, search their store online. You'll want to select the grommet and die sizes to match.
@@BridalSewing thanks! Actually figured out mine's a little different. I can punch a hole with the actual press by just not putting a grommet on it. Thanks for the reply!
Hmmm can't picture. Have fun, though! 🤗
♥️✂️🧵♥️
Do you ever make the corset longer than the original zipper in order to add room if the hip area is tight ?
Yes
I have watched almost all of your videos and am so impressed. I do have a question i hope you would be willing to answer. What ribbon/tie do you use with the grommet style corset? Thank you so much.
Oh, no prob. Just a regular 5/8 in double faced satin. I get them off of Amazon. I'll try to add the link to my site tonight.
Thank you so much for watching. Please tell others! :) ❤
@@BridalSewing Thank you so much. I have told a bunch of people already.
That was nice mom bt i ddnt understand on how put the garment inbetween those loops!! Pls help mom!!
Where can I buy the boning you used
I have links on the Products page of my website... www.bridalsewingtechniques.com
Yes, you can buy grommets by the yard that are already attached to twill tape or some type of corset back fabric. Just Google it. :)
In principle you could finish the eyelets with hand sewing. Quite a task, however. It would have to be very neat and tight stitching. Something that needs to be trained enough for the result to be pretty enough for a wedding dress.
Using grommets is much easier and faster.
Thank you
Hi if I wanted to do it vice versa?
The dress has to be quite a bit too big. Add the zipper & the work out the bunching that comes up at the new bottom of the zipper by making a long taper into the center back skirt seam
How can I do this same technique to a wedding dress that has lace across the back?
Add lots of illusion netting as lining to reinforce the lace back... Plenty of boning as well.
Thank you sooooooo much!!
Do you know where I can buy a corset back? Every time I search up a corset back online I am only finding corset tops not a corset back!
Have you added the keyword, "kit?"
What's size is the eyelet ur useing

What cement are you talking about that you use?
Vivian Mansfield hypo-cement. There's a link to it on the products page of my website: Www.bridalsewingtechniques.com
Thanks
What size grommets do you use for your shop? I have a short 6 inches or so to corset and wondering if i should go larger or smaller. She wants to keep part of her zipper. Suggestions?
AllSewn Up #0 & we do half zipper all the time.
So a 00 should work?
AllSewn Up I think that would work. You may have to use a thinner ribbon for it though. I think Pnina Tornai uses the #00
Thank you for the quick reply as always
I need this done so so bad!!!!
Lol!
Was this an expense upgrade to be done to the dress for your client.
Not really. They run around $150.
Do you have a link of where to buy this press and the grommets? I don't see it on your website.
Here it is! And I'll add to my site, too. amzn.to/2KVXfLS
I get the white grommets, though. Not usually the nickel. But, that's something you have to reorder all the time, anyways.
What do you mean by cementing the area where the seam is to be cut?
Thank you for you question! Can you give me a time stamp for context, plz? :)
Bridal Sewing Techniques it’s at 20 minutes into the video. Sorry I’m very new to sewing. I always wondered how it worked and certain things were achieved so I’ve started trying to learn by watching videos. Thank you for the detailed videos you make and share with us :)
No apologies needed. That's what I'm here for. I'll try to look later tonight and get back with you.
Is it lace mounted to netting or something sheer, or is it sewn to a solid, strong fabric?
Where can i order the gromet maker ?
Check out the products page on my website, www.bridalsewingtechniques.com
It is on there.
what do you charge for this ? great job ~☺
About 200 usd
Hi! Thanks for all the helpful videos! Can you tell me where you’re purchasing your white grommets? I’m only finding 1/2” grommets in white.
Amazon or clips shop. I think it is linked to on my website? Www.Bridalsewingtechniques.com
Thanks! It’s not on the site but I’ll check Clips Shop! Thanks again! 😊
Ug! It *was* on the site. Sometimes they relist differently and then it doesn't work anymore. I'm wondering if it was pulled? I will post a fresh link to it. But, yes, try clips shop.
amzn.to/2QueSFt Here's a link! :) )& I have added it to my site again. Thank you!!!

How did you paint the grommets after they were installed?
Wittle bitty paintbrush with matching ivory chalkpaint. This is done after the final adjustment fitting, so there is less likely to be chipping or wearing away by the wedding day. I explain to the bride that the ivory may come off in dry cleaning. The grommets only come in white, nickel, black, and brass, usually. Another seamstress and I joked about buying an oven and diy powder coating a huge batch of grommets. lol
could you spray an enamel paint on before installing them?
Have you tried using matching nail polish?
Cherie Miller no. That would probably stay better, but it may be harder to apply. & if you accidently get some on the fabric, it's not water soluble to remove easily right away.
@@Colorado106 good question. 🤔
What’s the difference between grommet / eyelets? Is one stronger than the other?
But not all sellers use the terms accurately.
Is there any way to set the grommets by hand?
Hannah Frankenberger some people do. I never have. I think it could prove to be impossible on some of the thicker gowns, but thinner ones should be okay. I could see where hand setting could take longer and be more difficult to get accurate results, but with practice, would probably work just fine.
I hand set grommets with a hammer, but it is a pain in the but and I hope to upgrade to a press soon. (I have also used specialty pliers, but because of the uneven pressure that puts on the grommets they never go in correctly when i used those, so, for now, i stick with the hammer approach.)
Oh girl, do whatever you have to, to buy a press. They don't cost that much & are so worth it. The other stuff just doesn't work.
Please what is the name of the machine you used in fixing that back
There is a link to it on the products page of my website:

You are so amazing and awesome and I just love you.
Pamela Overstreet aww lol the feeling is mutual, my dear friend. ❤
Do ever mess up and cut thru a hem or other mistake, or do you have insurance for that? What do you do about that?? I love your videos.
Benene Lane both of those questions are actually entire vids that I hope to upload soon! I can't really describe in comments. Stay tuned!! :)
Looking forward to it!
How much does it cost to have a seamtress do this
Tyrine DeB it is going to vary based upon the local economy. It also depends upon the amount of beadwork/boning changes. But, it should avg about 2 hours worth of work. Whatever that rate would be for your area. :)
👍💕
@BridalSewingTechniques I sent you an email!
