*Happy Thursday, everyone!* 🤓 This was one of our favorite episodes to record, lots of big stories to cover! And we want to know: - What's your trading card game rankings? - What's your personal game of the year?
I personally do not understand why Stellar Blade never made the GOTY nominations. I would have expected it to at least make it into the candidate slot. I get that it might not win, but no nominations seems kind of odd. It was a brand new IP that was hella fun to play and super popular.
I feel people are constantly missing the point of these Asia English decks and mega boosters. They're catchup sets for English speaking Asian Territories, not budget Structure Decks.
This is Sunybalboa! Here's how I got into YuGiOh: When I was very young (kindergarten age) I had YuGiOh cards which I LOVED but, I had no idea how to play the game and never learned. Flash forward to now (I'm 29 yrs old) a little over a year ago, a different podcast I listen to mentioned YuGiOh and it sparked my memories. So, I picked up the Link Strike starter deck and the Sage of Blue Eyes structure deck, learned to play the game and found out just how crazy fun it is to play! I taught YuGiOh to some close friends and they really enjoyed it as well. I play with them every week now both TCG and Master Duel. I wanted to get more invested into the game and community so I went to a local shop and was fortunate enough to find a loving community that helped me out greatly. For instance, I had no idea what Hand Traps were the first time I went to locals lol but that night I came home with a playset of Ash Blossom and Imperm that were gifted to me from other players at the store. Now I am obsessed with the game and play every week! Thanks for all the awesome content you guys make and thanks for reading my review!
You all should do a little skit where someone suggested links and pendulum cards and everyone got excited except one or two people who makes eye contact with each other
22:00 my guess as to why the age rating is higher over there is that they have Rush Duel to push on younger players, whereas over here they have to market the base game to the younger audience as well since we don't have a youth specific product like that.
I am a yugi-boomer, and honestly the “good old days” are really just nostalgia bait. I love caveman yugioh, but racing to get Gemini Elf or mechanicalchaser on the field when you know your opponent has 3 torrential tributes in deck doesn’t feel much better than the current meta. I sadly think the game is flawed at its core because the goal has always been to stop your opponent from playing the game.
Yeah but torrential is also a downside to themselves most of the time you're only going +1 or +2 with TT unless the opponent is really bad. Plus at the time you're running what, 3 TT, 3 Trap Holes, 3 solemns, 3 magic cylinder, 3 spellbinding circles like AT MOST fully optimized, no money limit, no ban list. How many people were doing that? Me and my friends would play for hours around the kitchen table grinding it out. There was Star craft, Counter strike and War craft but we weren't banging out 5 hours on fortnite. I agree, at its core, looking at the introduction of counter traps (a core mechanic meant to completely stop the opponent from doing that 1 task) that the game has flaws. But playing into a board of Cosmic Quasar, Shooting Star, and Hot red dragon Archfiend with your opponent being able to +3 at the end of a phase, is NOT. The. Same. As top decking a Gemini Elf to trap hole.
I just recently got into Digimon. In an area where it’s mostly Pokemon, Magic, and Yugioh, Digimon has a strong following with a little over 30 people showing up weekly to play at just one of the local card shops. And as a new player my biggest hurdle has been getting cards since they seem to be selling out. I have been talking to other shops to try and get them sold in more locations.
What brought me back to Yugioh after roughly 15 years, is the new Blue eyes structure deck coming in February. I randomly stumbled upon it, I didn't go looking for it, it found me lol Yugioh wasn't even on my mind. Omg did it ever reignite my interest in the game! Been 3ish months since my return, casually looking at other structure decks and buying those I liked... and then the flood came. Holy crap have I missed a lot since I stopped playing which was just after the end of GX lol! I'm now enjoying master duel and collecting more cards, buying booster boxes, multiple singles at a time, more structure decks and a few other things. I need to slow down it's getting expensive 😅 my goal is to collect cards and build more decks then play at locals casually. Preordered x3 Blue eyes deck and will customize it, so excited! Love the channels and the podcast guys! Thank you for taking the time, it helps bring me up to speed and keep up the good work much appreciated!
I joined similarly to sunnybalboa. I didnt start with the anime. I actually started because of duel links, and the idea of how back and forth yugioh is captivated me! I am now getting into the tcg and learning how modern yugioh works and i love it. ❤
So for the Yasaku AI thing that was the plan he had at the end to merge with the playmaker so technically we’re kind of just getting the alternate ending to Vrains his last pack
I know Yugioh has its flaws and problems but at the end of the day no card game manages to get me this excited by playing. Every time me and my friends meet, we have so much fun. And we don't really care about the meta. Just us playing our favorite rogue decks.
Just tried Pokemon TCG Pocket yesterday. It's pretty nice, considering it's my first attempt at the TCG. It reminds me a lot of Master Duel with the UI, animations, and packs, but it does the subscription service for $10 a month for its equivalent to the gold pass. 120 bucks for the year is still cheaper than 80 bucks for 5000 gems and I like how you can open a pack per day, more with the pass, that doesn't involve playing with other people. It's like you don't need to play the game to just collect the cards, something I wish yugioh did, but I am enjoying the game itself. It's refreshing to play a TCG that isn't as complicated.
I was in Hong Kong not too long ago and even smallest hole in the wall store would stock like 20 different card games in multiple languages, and they had sample packs and signs basically from floor to ceiling. It was really cool to see.
Regarding holiday bundles, the OCG's December releases are basically those. It technically started with the Millenium Box Gold edition in 2015, but it's a November release until Link VRAINS Box in 2017, where it's a December release. The latest one in this series is the upcoming Quarter Century Trinity Box, which has new support for Dragonmaid, PUNK, and Orcust, and has a lot of cool stuff in the box as well, like acrylic keychains, a large storage box, clear card sleeves, and a special clear card, along with the packs of cards inside.
The lacking in popularity thing for MTG is not just focused on Japan, it's something in all of Asia. A notable game yes, but it's been declining. Hasbro focusing so much on the western market is really putting a drain on global outreach. As it stands they've been cutting support for alternative language and having conventions be more USA focused. Crazy thing is the Japanese MTG branch actually fights like hell to maintain a position. Anime trailers, magazine advertisements, full manga, special Japan exclusive arts, nostalgia targeted commercials, and even it's own tournament circuit. Final Fantasy may give it a boost, but so many of the universes beyond do not appeal to Japan, and now that the actual MTG story is suffering because of that, long term fans have less to care about.
Idc about VGA (other than the clips) but I'm pleasantly surprised that Balatro is there. I don't wanna over sell it but it's definitely worth a try. Plus it's cheap, solo dev, the whole indie gone right ordeal.
Just a small bit of context for Union Arena from when I was visiting family out in Japan. They have a few exclusive sets out there that boosted its popularity by quite a lot. On release they had Tekken 7 which was moderately popular, and then card shops from my understanding got a huge surge of interest when the Nikke set came out. They even recently released an Idol Master set in September, which was another big boost.
18:16 I'm glad you acknowledged this because it's been really frustrating hearing people crying for a new Master Rule anime when I guarantee they didn't watch Zexal, Arc-V or Vrains. And if they had made a new Master Rule anime after Vrains instead of Sevens, those same people would not have watched it. The only people that want a new Master Rule anime are TCG players that think the franchise needs it. The anime and the card game are made first for Japan. Sevens and Go Rush are killing it in Japan. Why would they go back? The duel composer who scripted every duel from Duel Monsters to today said that Vrains was near impossible to script. That's why they made Rush Duel. They will never make another Master Rule anime unless they jsut reboot the game from square 1. But guess what! They did that! It's called Rush Duels. As someone who's watched EVERY Yu-Gi-Oh anime, let the future be Rush. Both shows are great! Better than Arc-V and Vrains, that's for sure. Let it go.
This was a great year for gaming if you look outside the realm of games that pay to be in award shows. Nine Sols, Satisfactory, Shadow Generations and Ys X Nordics are some of the best I've played in ages.
I like PTCGP, but it needs more features. Like trading and they need to bring back resistances in battle. also the reason to watch the TGA is for the trailers.
That is exactly why I don't watch TGAs. I'll just see the trailers instantly after the reveal anyways, why would I give Geoff Keighley a view for turning what's supposed to be an award show into a show where they speedrun awards to show more ads?
Those secret rare promos are nice! Tribe infecting virus having a accessible Holo reprint is so nice along with the common in the set itself. Maxx c is the real winner though hopefully that helps to bring the price down. That's the only thing stopping me from playing hat format
I think GameAwards are a bit of a joke... Stellar Blade didn't make the list almost certainly because "too sexy". If it were fully up to these people they'd probably nominee Concord. Helldivers 2 just kinda fell off. So, it not being on here might be because of that.
When it comes to DLC in the game awards it should be its own separate category ,Erdtree would win no doubt but, The Final Shape DLC was absolutely amazing and would get my vote.
Regarding the whole DLC thing at the GotY awards. For me its not so much about the fact that ER SotE is nominated, it by all means outshines numerous full price titles in terms of content, art direction and could easily count as a standalone game I just think it sets a dangerous precedent for developers to push the limits further on what counts as full release and what can be added on as DLC afterwards. My problem is that I think there will be times when games are deliberately slashed up into bigger DLCs to get a higher chance at getting the award.

Hi, i did not get to say it. I am playing the tutorial in duelist legacy and finally i am learning how to play yugioh. I am on the chapter of xyz and I do not understand chains at all.
Power creep is purely Konami's fault not the players. The meta game has always been there, anyone remember when Mechanical Chaser was the best Lv 4 monster in terms of ATK? As it has been said before, older cards on the ban list are on there for a reason. The real issue is Konami does not seem to learn from their previous card design issues, they just keep compounding them. Being someone that has played the game since its release, it amazes me just how different the modern game is to its early days. Since power creep is not going away, it's only logical that it's going to get worse, and it boggles my mind that's even possible in an environment where a duel can be decided as early as turn 1 but that's the nature of power creep. I think at this point Konami have backed themselves into a corner they will never get out of, future cards will have to be just as "good or better" than what we have today and that does not bode well for the games overall health. It's ironic isn't it, that back in the earlier days of the game a Special Summon was actually special and could change the course of a duel but now not so special. Does anyone remember when a Tribute Summon actually felt impactful? Ultimately I think this is where Konami really went wrong, instead of designing within the scope of what made the game fun, exciting, and unique they have instead basterdized many of the games mechanics and elements making them mundane. Considering the current state of the game (at least on Master Duel), seeing players scoop after an Ash Blossom or Imperm, I don't think it's too far out there to say that things may indeed get so bad that players will be surrendering if they lose the coin toss to decide turn order if Konami doesn't get the modern game design under control.
I think Dragon Ball Super should be in A tier at least. It's basically just a better playing One Piece. Given, it is a little newer and there was a tier zero in the second set, but every set is getting better and better and the meta is extremely healthy right now. We should (hopefully) get multicolor next set, which will take the game to the next level of skill expression and deck building
The holiday collection a small box 4 boosters from random sets and random eras with 3 or 4 Christmas themed token cards chance to give ojarma lime some love and have it dressed like the Grinch or scape goat tokens pulling a slay and other fun things
I don't think Accode counts as a rival because Ai was the final boss of the series. Yuto and Yuya's also doesn't really count because Yuto is just xyz yuya and dies before he could even be a rival
Do you guys think they will release any new structures after febuary 2025? Ocg has a couple structures that would be awesome to see in tcg like Dark magician, would be great to see the nostalgic cards get more supports that could potentially be competitive or casual, either way wee need something from back in the day make a comeback, i feel like bringing more structure decks from the ocg to tcg light would encourage new and og players to keep having fun with the game.
After playing Metaphor, I hope it does win even if i think Geoff is a sellout. What a great game with an enjoyable story + characters. It truly is my goty. And i get it about not paying attention to it but, geoff is too big now. I just enjoy watching it together with my friends 😂

Saying this was a bad year in gaming is straight BS, there are legit like 5 other games that could of been on that GOTY list, we had 3 back to back games break steam player recursion at the start of the year, and most of best games got realeased in fall....
On GotY snubbed. Stellar Blade is as mediocre as it gets, it is not close to goty material. for as much certain people claim it was "snubbed" same if not bigger amount of people wouldn't ever played it if it wasn't for its "presentation", let's not pretend otherwise. As for Zelda, while it's neat idea it fails in execution (you end up using like 2-3 things in entire game) and it also runs disgustingly poorly.
The game awards just like the Oscar's is nothing but a circle of Jerks and i haven't watched them for years at this point. They need to go the way of E3
They also put money in the pockets of the people who work at the A.I. companies. I don't particularly like A.I. but the "you took money out of people's pocket" argument doesn't really work here. A.I. companies are run by people.
About game of the year. Games are no longer art. They are DLC and gotcha games that are not rich in story. What is sad is that most indie games are probably better than the AAA games.
I have yet to meet single person who says OPTCG is good game and doesn't start going about collecting aspect. It's like entire base is driven by convincing themselves they are sitting on goldmine.
to be honest tomoharu owned an "western" card shop that specialized on mtg and others where everyone wants to play western card game of course fab get B, if you went to other card shop chain like ikki aka card kingdom you get duel master below pokemon.
Union Arena is even worse than Weiss/Schwarz. It's a cheap low effort cash grab with no unique art, just a playable version of all those chinese bootleg cards.

The spike for Pokemon pocket on the 15th is because that’s when most peoples free premium pass trial expired.
I still think it's a good deal if you are going to use it. The 10 dollar pass levels out to something that's cheaper long term than gem packs.

My LCS just became an official Bandai TCG+ store. Hoping to go in tomorrow and get a free Digimon deck with their official launch

I think it’s crazy that flesh and blood moved up to b tier in Japan since it’s only been available there for 2 sets
The Sorcery: Contested Realm TCG is honestly worth your time. You should check it out! The gameplay and artwork and flavor of the game are phenomenal!

My problem is that I think there will be times when games are deliberately slashed up into bigger DLCs to get a higher chance at getting the award.

Power creep is purely Konami's fault not the players. The meta game has always been there, anyone remember when Mechanical Chaser was the best Lv 4 monster in terms of ATK? As it has been said before, older cards on the ban list are on there for a reason. The real issue is Konami does not seem to learn from their previous card design issues, they just keep compounding them. Being someone that has played the game since its release, it amazes me just how different the modern game is to its early days. Since power creep is not going away, it's only logical that it's going to get worse, and it boggles my mind that's even possible in an environment where a duel can be decided as early as turn 1 but that's the nature of power creep. I think at this point Konami have backed themselves into a corner they will never get out of, future cards will have to be just as "good or better" than what we have today and that does not bode well for the games overall health. It's ironic isn't it, that back in the earlier days of the game a Special Summon was actually special and could change the course of a duel but now not so special. Does anyone remember when a Tribute Summon actually felt impactful? Ultimately I think this is where Konami really went wrong, instead of designing within the scope of what made the game fun, exciting, and unique they have instead basterdized many of the games mechanics and elements making them mundane. Considering the current state of the game (at least on Master Duel), seeing players scoop after an Ash Blossom or Imperm, I don't think it's too far out there to say that things may indeed get so bad that players will be surrendering if they lose the coin toss to decide turn order if Konami doesn't get the modern game design under control.
I think Dragon Ball Super should be in A tier at least. It's basically just a better playing One Piece. Given, it is a little newer and there was a tier zero in the second set, but every set is getting better and better and the meta is extremely healthy right now. We should (hopefully) get multicolor next set, which will take the game to the next level of skill expression and deck building

I don't think Accode counts as a rival because Ai was the final boss of the series. Yuto and Yuya's also doesn't really count because Yuto is just xyz yuya and dies before he could even be a rival

Do you guys think they will release any new structures after febuary 2025? Ocg has a couple structures that would be awesome to see in tcg like Dark magician, would be great to see the nostalgic cards get more supports that could potentially be competitive or casual, either way wee need something from back in the day make a comeback, i feel like bringing more structure decks from the ocg to tcg light would encourage new and og players to keep having fun with the game.

Stellar Blade is as mediocre as it gets, it is not close to goty material. for as much certain people claim it was "snubbed" same if not bigger amount of people wouldn't ever played it if it wasn't for its "presentation", let's not pretend otherwise. As for Zelda, while it's neat idea it fails in execution (you end up using like 2-3 things in entire game) and it also runs disgustingly poorly.
