  • Much unfair criticism has been foisted of Jeremy Lin for not fouling Conley at the end of the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies on January 2, 2015. This video breaks down that play, showing how Coach Byron Scott specifically directed Lin to not foul.

    I remember this Lin did what his coach said but his own instincts clearly told him to foul our he would not have been checked as much. He will get the blame in that situation only because he is the point guard. I know it's hard because you want to follow your coach but look who is taking the heat. This applys to everyday life. After the game, Byron Scott did say he told Lin not to foul, wanting to wait and foul at the 10 second mark thinking that it wouldn't make much of a difference. To be fair though, I would think the only upside of doing that is to potentially get a steal or force a pass to a worse free throw shooter, which can only be achieved if the ball handler gets some sort of pressure from the defender, which is clearly not happening.

    The only reason why you should be not fouling immediately is when you intend to pressure to get a steal or force the ball away from a good free throw shooter. They were not doing that. There was also no point in waiting for the 10 second mark to foul. They need all the time they have.

    What kind of coach says dont foul without making ANY attempt to steal the ball or cause a turnover while letting the opposing team run the time out? Lin was a fearful newcomer. • @arbeecass
    @arbeecass 9 місяців тому +1

    With a .2 differential, Griz can easily run out the clock and shoot a second or 2 before it ends. Coach could have easily made a mistake since the shot clock is still running, he probably thought there was more than 0.2 secs on the clock and would still have enough time for another play so he opted for a stop rather than foul. Coaches would normally call for a foul or aggressive defense in situations like this.

    I love to play basketball but don't have high game mentality. But with 24.2 seconds left definitely is a walk away win for the Memphis as they will burn the time for no foul from LA. No pressure for the ball handler for a possible ball steal or turn over. In fact, they ball can be easily pass to other Memphis teammates since the defends is loose. After inbound a foul could be given immediately but LA give a foul after 9seconds gone. I don't get clearly what's LA coach plan. But to foul immediately should be done in this situation..??Just saying...what you think guys?

    • @Apoc6
      @Apoc6 6 років тому +5

      A.T.H I would disagree. Byron Scott probably had a timeout left. He probably was telling him to wait to foul. You want a catch and shoot coming out of a timeout just in case Memphis nails both free throws. Foul too early, all Memphis has to do is foul you immediately where you only get 2 free throws instead of a look at a 3. You don't want to have to intentionally miss the 2nd and then Memphis gets the rebound and it's game over. Byron has 3 rings. I'm sure he has been faced with this situation enough times in his career. Lin could have been waiting for the signal for exactly when to foul. If Memphis hits both FTs. You can call the timeout, advance the ball and Memphis will probably not foul you at the 3pt line knowing it is a catch an shoot situation with no more fouls to give. Lin showed discipline.

    1. Foul the guy and let him shoot for 2 points - which he might get some, all or none. Either way, at max you will be at a 3 point deficit but at least with time on the clock and the ball in your hands now and with a chance to either tie the game or maybe even win it with a 3 point plus foul shots. It would be clear the opponent had wanted to drag the shot clock out for as long as possible with only 20 seconds remaining.
    2. Wait for the clock to run close to out with no time to go to the opponent's basket to make up the 1 point difference.

    Lin's fault is that he should be giving pressure and trying to force a steal. Worst case is ball handler getting fouled which will stop the clock.
    Either way, Lin shouldnt be just watching the ball handler wasting the clock. Not fouling doesnt mean just staring.

      His main asset was driving to the basket and his injuries hindered that. He's also old. Later on, he got a couple of votes for Sixth Man of the Year with the Hornets, where they weren't even predicted to be in playoff contention but snagged a seed. Gotta listen to the coach. Doesn't matter if you think it's wrong. They determine if you play or not. You think from a coach's view, someone who just completely ignores your call won't upset you? Coaches are there for a reason. Probably wanted an inbound play, with a short enough clock for one shot from 3.
