Gotta agree with Pachter here on Shane being a little off on 3D. One of the biggest changes in the industry ever? Absolutely. But smartest decision? I don't know. It's like saying online play is the smartest decision. Just doesn't necessarily track here because it's not so much an active "decision" as tech dependent.
I'm honestly surprised Pachter didn't mention the switch and steam deck. Making big budget games portable and combining what used to be separate resources into one is impressive.
Pachter: "Their was PC games like Duke Nukem and Doom." Shane: "Those were like childish though." Since when was Doom for kids? Games for adults were already on PC. I wonder why consoles have AMD (Sony, Xbox) and Nvidia (Nintendo) use hardware originally designed for PC? Sony din't invent 3D. And why are you guys arguing?
Clearly the guy in the background was wrong. Developers have always tried to put as much content as possible into their games. When the CD-ROM came around this meant a huge leap in available storage space for both PC en later consoles. It's not a Sony thing to put more content in games. Everybody making games on CD-ROM did this. Also calling the adult themed Duke Nukem and ultra violent demon slaying Doom kids games... bruh.
Do you really look at those games as "adult" now? They're cartoon caricatures of what people thought adult games were back in the mid '90s. Those weren't the types of games I was talking about with Pachter. I was talking about games with real adult themes like Fear Effect and Metal Gear.
Financially ultimate team is smart, from a pure gamer perspective it's a toxic grift of people's money and the anithesis of what gaming should be about
I loved the WiiU. I don’t care what you say, it was greatness. In spite of its commercial failure, it proved to be a great beta for the Switch and many of the games went on to sell very well on the current generation.
I agree with Shane PlayStation came at the perfect time where I was done with Nintendo's kid friendly consoles and was ready for something more adult and here comes PlayStation at the right time
people that wait in all day do nothing create nothing of value apart from play video games are a drain on society. Create something dont bloody play something that can cause to have a seizure
Is it me or do I sense an anti-Sony sentiment from Pachter for a while now? I mean the dumbest decision in recent history has to be the Xbox One launch from which they have NEVER recovered from since and smartest decision was Sony taking pure advantage in their E3 press conference and that sharing games video. Those sequence of events must haunt Don Mattrick and the rest of the Xbox heirarchy in their sleep to this day.
Nintendo understands the concept of fun better than just about anybody, so I was baffled by the Wii U. Looking at two different screens is obviously not fun, and there are only a handful of examples in an entire generation of games where it worked and was fun.
I will say that I disagree with Shane on this one, only because SNES/Gensis graphics were so limited, that they couldnt really make games focused for older audiences on console. Like compare the Castlevania games from NES, Genesis/SNES, and Playstation. Plenty of "adult" games on PC at the time too like Patch says. Look at FF6 and its cute on the outside, but it actually deals with some pretty heavy topics. I think the "adult" game thing only came about because the change in tech allowed it. It was always present, but they always had to stylize their characters for the console tech at the time. I wouldnt say the Wii U was a dumb idea, as it directly lead to the Switch. And if the name is the issue, then you have to include the Xbox naming conventions which are just as bad (Xbox One, Series X/S are all terrible names that just confuse consumers). Sony handhelds also werent bad, as the PSP actually was bigger than the DS in Japan thanks to Monster Hunter (and pirating on the DS). The only dumb part of the PSP/VITA was the proprietary disc issue... which is basically Sony's signature move and worked when the PS2 was the primarily cheap DVD player, and some of the value of the PS3/4 was as blu-ray players. My vote for worst move was probably Sega's handling of the Saturn / Dreamcast or just whenever EA buys any studio. Sega's handling of that killed what, on the outside anyways, appeared to be a healthy console division. Any development studio EA gobbles up almost always turns to lead with in a few years.

@@SIFTDGames If you think Duke Nukem and Doom are suitable for kids, you are just all kinds of wrong.
Of course not, but those games are childish caricatures that just use gore/violence as a hook. They're not "mature" games.
Thank you for the episode

I liked hearing Shane give some ideas toward the end! The question is very broad on this video, so there was room for multiple views :)

what would happen if people really read books and learned to speak to one another in person
