You are allowed to appeal. It is in the laws, and it is asking the question of the umpire. From behind the bat there was noise, the catch was taken and Gilchrist appealed. There's actually nothing wrong with that, no different to any appeal made in the series by both sides, that was turned down. The saddest bit in this is the poor decision by Bucknor, but the appeal is ok.
India should have won that game and the umpires shoud have been sacked. But if you really think every keeper in the world appeals only when its out, be it, sanga, dhoni, boucher or someone else...then we are watching different sports i guess.

It's all about culture. The tone is set early in a series if their is some doubt over a batsman's dismissal (i.e. he and maybe the keeper are the only ones who know he is out). In that case, if the batsman walks, he sets the tone for similar instances down the road. And usually, the opposition would follow as it is natural human instinct to want to return the favor. If they do not, that's when trust breaks down, and umpires need to assert more control. It's interesting to me, how those perceived as dishonest on the cricket field, wear that reputation for the rest of their lives. And those they are not perceived as dishonest (e.g. a Gilchrist), benefit from goodwill for the rest of their lives. The lesson: think about the values you want to be known for- they will stick beyond your life after cricket.

With clear evidence of what I mentioned above is it not obvious that BCCI controls ICC and that some form of curruption is involved. I dont think the world would have seen players from Pakistan, Sri Lanka or south Africa get away with the above.
