Oooo thank you for your review! This family has a big history here in Brazil and the film captured it very well. Fernanda is a huge actress, at age of 18 she won the Cannes Palm, her mother is a legend, she deserves all this!
And Marcelo, the son who wrote the book, had an accident at 80"s that made him paralysed, and at that time he wrote another book about the accident, and its not a sad book (and we read it at school!). this woman inspired her family to be strong through all hard times in life.

"This is the empathy machine working on full power" one of the best comments I've seen about this film. And I loved to hear that, because this comment summarises the whole package. ❤ Also, it says a lot of you and your connection with other people.

Nice that you could feel the film as we all did .
This movie touched my soul so much; I felt like part of this family. I experienced every joy, pain, anguish, and distress along with the Paiva family.
The cinematography, the colors, the 1970s costumes, the way the cameras avoid close-ups-everything is masterfully done. The ice cream shop scene will be unforgettable.
It’s magnificent, overwhelming, raw, poignant, breathtaking… I did really love that movie. 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Thank you very much for your review. It is gratifying that this story is being embraced and enchanting people around the world. Despite this, the coolest thing is that this film is the first Brazilian and South American film to compete in the main category, being a true story of a person who faced a dictatorial government and fought for democracy. This, in the name of someone who was taken from her life, from her family, and always faced everything with a smile. To this day, no one knows what happened to Rubens, nor the location of his body. A person, like other victims, who tried to erase his existence and now the world is getting to know the story of Rubens, Eunice and their family! Again, thank you very much!

Wish everybody think just like you, but the critcs are abandoning us kkkkkkk this film is something you cant explain, it keeps within you for days... The thing i love more in this film is the subtext. You got it just before eunice recieve the news that rubens is dead? The dog is killed for the same police of the state that arrested rubens, and then the dog is buried. The thing is: the dog had more dignity than rubens, he was never buried. This movie is like his body, a return of rubens body for his family after state kidnaped him and spread lies about why he never returned. this film is almost his tomb that this family never had to cry for him and in a way a recognition that he existed. Thats why this movie is so special for us. Its a reparation. It is rubens body, finally.

    Hi!
I'm going to add a little more context to the film:
All of of the songs that the family listens at the house are musics from musicians that got censured during the dictarshiop and the songs that we listen on the radios are popular songs, but from artists that were complict with the regime.
When the military comes to kidnap Rubens you can see them lurking around, looking at their vinyl collection and books, they were actually looking for "subversive" material.
Also: the helicopter thar flies by them at the beach, were used to drop bodies at the sea. We only found about that about that decades later.
Walter was very clever about that, but again: you have to be brazillian to know that
I really dont know why it didnt got nominated for adapted screanplay :(
And Director for Walter, bc the music, our art, is really important for us, and he was able to show that in the movie.
Also: millions of milleniuns and Gen X grew up reading his books, and his family. We all love him, and we are really happy that their are getting this level of recognition. NOT SO FUN FACT: Rubens has a statue in Brasilia, and at the day of the inauguration, Bolsonaro spit at the statue, and said that he deserved to die. Yes, he is that low

I loved how you said “empathy machine” because yes! Fernanda as Eunice feels like women, moms and aunts I know irl
They don’t scream, they bottle it up and up and up and they try to fix things and they just wanna hold on to normalcy.
Also, I love how the kids pester each other and imitate the parents. Some lines and scenes are just there to show the characters as human beings and I’ve been missing that in movies and TV shows so much.
The most amazing part for me is the ending, bc it’s so impossible to end a movie like that.

    SOME INFORMATION
💎 I'm Still Here is the first Portuguese-spoken movie to be nominated to the Oscar of Best Picture and the sixth that was nominated to Best Foreign Language Film (the fifth representing Brazil).

💎 Fernanda Torres's mother, Fernanda Montenegro was the first latin actress nominated to the Oscar of Best Actress (Katy Jurado, Rita Moreno and Norma Aleandro had already been nominated as Supporting Actress) and, to date, she was the only Portuguese-spoken actor nominated to the award, but her daughter just repeated this. That was in 1999, with the movie Central Station, also directed by Walter Salles and nominated to Best Foreign Language Film.

💎 Fernanda Torres, Selton Mello and Fernanda Montenegro played in Four Days in Septemper, brazilian movie nominated to the Oscar of Best Foreign Language Film in 1998, also about brazilian dictatorship period.

💎 Fernanda Torres was the fourth brazilian actor nominated to Golden Globe (first to win), but the second with a Portuguese-spoken performance. The first one was her mother. The other nominees were Sônia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Moon Over Parador and The Burning Season) and Wagner Moura (Narcos).

💎 Fernanda Torres, aged 20, won the award for Best Actress at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival by the movie Love Me Forever or Never (tied with Barbara Sukowa, by Rosa Luxemburg). She was the first brazilian actress (of two) to win an award in Cannes. The second one was Sandra Corveloni that, coincidentally, was directed by Walter Salles.

It's an amazing movie, very important for the times we are living, hard to watch but beautiful
Just to add something: it is not a military occupation, it is a military dictatorship. In 1964 the military leas a coup on the democratic government of Brasil. This happened across all Latin America supported by the US government. Look up operation condor and the school of America's.

  • @byejesper
    @byejesper 8 годин тому +1

One thing that’s very important to note is that this was a far-right dictatorship (a lot of people were shocked by this when i mentioned it bc they had a stereotype of LATAM in their heads) and financed by the US.
A lot of the docs are still classified by the US government, but we have confirmation of the Brother Sam Operation, that sent money, navy and air force to help with the coup in 1964.
We also know that the coup had been planned and attempted before 1964, because the US was already training our military for the coup.
To have this recognition in awards all over the US feels good because it’s like being heard for the first time. The dictatorship ruined our lives (inflation was at 200%) and many americans don’t know that their hard earned money went to finance this abhorrent regime.
Cool fact: Our first female president was one of the victims that were tortured by the military. She never gave up any names or information, even under torture. She’s now the head of the BRICS bank.

We have to make this movie trend like Parasyte did a few years ago. Not only because Fernanda Torres is brilliant, but because it’s an important warning during times of neofascism.
