This is an old video, but im shocked at how much I have learned through your videos. Nobody else goes this detailed with audio equipment for the "budget" audiophiles. Thanks!
Great video! One thing buyers of this amp should know is depending on the speakers connected, do not be suprized if you start to hear audible distortion beginning at 40% to 70% volume. To solve this in my system I set my Echo dot to max volume and then, listening to several songs, turned the volume on the Lepai up until I heard distortion. I then backed the volume on the amp down about 5% from that point. All set. Then I just use the volume of the Echo Dot to control the volume. The Amp is acting as a power amp and no mater how loud I ask Alexa to play, I never hear any distortion. My system uses an Echo Dot as the source into the Emotiva S8 sub, 100 Hz and up is sent to the Lepai LP2020A+ amp and out to Micca MB42X speakers. Total system cost was $301 + tax. Yes, I got some great deals.
One thing to note for future viewers - the inputs on the amp are connected to the same input inside the casing. This means you can use one of the inputs as a passthrough or splitter if you need such a thing for your setup.
Great video. I really like the fact that you included links to every item. It helps out audio noobs like me so much. Thank you for the amazing Reddit/May Guide you posted too.
Tone control is handy when using this app in a multi room speaker set up. I have the EQ set on my main computer and desktop system I wanted to sound, but it doesn't always work with other speakers. I use the EQ knobs on the Lepy amp to fix this issue.
Buying the 6a power brick does that increase the volume you can get out of this amp. I have pioneer sp bs 22 and this amp can't get them loud at all and I'm very disappointed because of the hype behind this amp.
+Z Reviews I figured out the problem. The turntable that was hooked up to the amp was on the phono output so o changed that and now they can make me go deaf so it's all good now
This channel has changed the way I approached speakers. I was thinking about buying some preamped Edifier 1700's, but after this video I'm thinking about the lepai 2020+ and Polk TSi100. What do you think of that combo and will the lepai have enough juice to power the Polk. Or any recommendations on better speakers around the same size and price?
Carlos Rey , fucking fantastic choice. I have the Polk t-15s and they rock. I'm getting the Polk tsi200s here shortly great great speakers especially for the money.
Carlos Rey , hey Rey, go with the Klipsch R14 or R15s. their sensitivity is above 90 db. around 94 to 96 actually. that high means that an amp with lower power will sound much better. good luck
interesting. never gave Leipai a second look before (mainly stuck to Dayton Audio to good results), but now that i have an extra amp i need for movies with roomies and money is tight, they're looking a bit intriguing. and oh man, i recognize that Behringer DAC i'm sure i looked at back in my XP/Vista-era HTPC days!
What are the differences between the 2013 revision and the other one? I bought the other one and I've yet to receive it but I'm wondering if I should've gone with the newer revision.
Not entirely sure. I have never had anyone explain the difference to me. Could be a slightly different power supply of better quality or just the black case.
My logitech Z2300 is making humming noises when there's no audio being played, the subwoofer hums and the speakers hum 2x as loud. I swapped out the satellites for JBL Loft 30's and they still hum the same. So maybe the amp from the sub is bad? What's causing this? If i got this lepai, will it stop the humming if i hook it up as a 2.1?
Z Reviews hey big thanks for the suggestions man. I was considering Amp+Speakers to replace my plastic 2.1 PC speakers (yeah, kinda new to this side of audio) which is currently combining TWO inputs. The SA36 and SA50 both have one input, and the SA60 i saw you review apparently switches between the two but don't combine. i can probably find a splitter to solve that though :)
Ordered one of these to replace my Pyle 2x20W amp. I'm hoping it will improve volume and sound on my Dayton B652's (rev2). I use them for sunday school music at church and sometime we have a hard time hearing the vocals.
+Hindsight Aquatics Hope you got this taken care of. The makers of the B652 admitted to a problem with the V2s and, for a while at least, were exchanging them for a fixed version. I recently read this on an Amazon review of the Daytons.
I've an old Pioneer passive 3way speaker, it has an 8" woofer rated for 75w, I will want to make a boombox powered by a big battery, on AliExpress I can find very cheap 24v 36v even 48v so the battery is my last problem, can you suggest me a powerful Bluetooth board for that purpose? Maybe that can be Bridged in mono because I've only one speaker. The aux out will be interesting for daisy chain thanks
man I'm like reaaally confused it's been a while since i bought my passive speakers but I'm just don't know what is the suitble amp for it and i keep watching your reviews and some of Kirby meets audio and I just get more confused at this point i have no idea what to do if you see my comment or whatever help if you can
Would you recommend this Lepai amp? My budget is $150, and this falls below my budget, but I like the concept. Just wondering if you'd recommend a different amp that falls within the $150 budget. These would be used for my desktop set up which includes a large collection of music, but would like the audio to be able to fill the room without becoming distorted.
did you ever hook this up to the andrew jones speakers and if so how'd they sound, would you recommend it? also i saw your smsl sa50 review would that be a better amp for the bs22-lr? also what dac would you recommend? keep in mind this is for PC use and i'm sitting 2ft away. if theres any better options id be glad to hear what you have to recommend.
I am uploading the BS22 review tonight. The monster Fluance are actually better for up close. UNLESS you go a completely sideways direction and get a 2.1 with the Polk OWM3's and the ML sub. The SA50 is the best all around amp and only if you were on a strict budget would you get the SA36. As for a dac go over this post. redd.it/2dk7la
ZeosPantera any hissing up close with the SA50 with the fluance sx6? im looking at that and the topping TP22 which is 30w per channel a review said it was more accurate than the SA50 but had less power but i dont think i need 50w per channel sitting a couple feet away. decisions decisions.. :/
I bought this amp, and I would like to use it for both my mp3 player and for my playstation 3 audio. Is there any type of switch that I could get so that I don't have to keep unplugging the rca cables when I want to listen to my mp3 player? Great reviews by the way.
There is both RCA and 3.5mm inputs on this amp but I am not sure if it will switch automatically. Something like this [amzn.to/1cbZhzy] will work as a source switch you just ignore the video plug.
kevina968 , just buy a Y splitter because you only listen to one source at a time anyways, that's what I did. just make sure you don't turn on both sources at the same time
kevina968 , go on Amazon and get a "Little Bear " video switcher. even has an analog volume control. zero noise because it's totally passive, does not need power. they have them with 2 or 4 video inputs. very cheap and we'll put together. especially for the price.
hello Zeos, I just wanted to say that what you link to here and in your reddit is not the original tripath chip Lepai (made and sold by parts express, I think) but rather a knockoff...The original units is no longer being made due to shortage of amp chips, and is now replaced by the "better" and more powerful Lepai LP-2020TI.
I run this amp (6amp brick) with the old Ajones SP bs 21 speakers (49 pair, delivered on closeout) and a Martinlogan 300 sub (109 at Amazon, via a Zeos twitter link). It sounds fine and it gets plenty loud in our 20 x 24 room tv room. Even counting wire and cables, I am under $200 for a very fine sounding system. Zeos FTW
I am thinking of modding the lepai 2020,can you make a video on modding the lepai, you probably got one right..main mod i am l looking is to get the bass below 100hz,there is literally 0 subbass in the lepai
Well if you have headphones that need powering the D1 is far superior. BUT if the lepai amp is all you intend on using the UCA202 will probably suffice. A better amp than dac in your case.
Hey man, I'm about to but this little lepai to fuel my budget 2.1 build. The only out of the box mod I see as a necessity is the power supply upgrade. Would you mind giving me the link to where I could order the same 12v 6a one you got? I'd love to get one for the price you stated if possible because everywhere I look they're almost double. Thanks man, great video. I hope the lepai lives up to my expectations (I am keeping in mind what exactly it is and the cost). I'll be using Sony ss-b1000 bookshelf speakers with some Dayton audio 5 1/2" classic drivers modded in. From what I hear the b1000's are good for the price with the exception of the Malaysian produced 4 1/2" (Sony advertised as 5 1/2"... wtf Sony) driver.
Troy Guinn , actually you should use a 20 volt / 5 amp power supply. these Lepai 2020 a and time models can use from 12 to 24 volts. I'm using a 20 volt / 5 amp but I installed a heat sink on top of the Texas instruments chip and installed a small CPU fan. just in case it gets a little hot. go to Parts Express.com

If you got everything above the Behringer Dac has a headphone out.. It isn't super powerful but those headphones should be OK. If you wanted something more substantial in both the Speaker and headphone department you would skip the Lepai and grab this Topping TP21 [amzn.to/1gY1fWL] instead.
Z why have you never done a full review of the Behringer UCA-202? Is it not worth it even as a budget DAC? The creator of the ODAC seemed to like it, what's your opinion?
Saaif Khan I've heard that the headphone out is rather shit on the 202. For that kind of money, there are only Creative USB soundcards which are worth it, according to a forum I trust.
P. Sz. Yup, I've heard the same, but as a standalone DAC I've heard it's pretty good. I'm wondering if it's worthwhile even though it's so cheap, compared to the sound card in my phone, PC, or even receiver.
Mr Z, there's no way you're having as much fun with the megabuck gear you're reviewing in 2017 - the 'trophy' case many of your flagship headphones come with cost more than this rig ! ;)
I went ahead and bought its bigger brother Lepy LP7498E+ which came with 32 V 5A power brick (which would mean max 160 W power). I am powering the speakers philips fw v785 whose manual says they are 6ohms and 120W per channel (RMS) (which would mean 240 W total). upon playing the speakers through them at the volume that I would be listening, the volume knob was halfway and it was pretty loud, yet I measured the power sucked from wall using a powermeter, they were constant around 40 watts... To test them further I cranked up the volume upto full, yet the power consumption remained at 40 W, though the volume was unbearably high. So is it the speakers don't need more power, or the power brick mislabeled, or am I missing something? Because then I could simply have gone with the cheaper Lepai LP2020A+
I want a new pair of speakers to use with a lepai, which speakers are better the Dayton B652 or the Micca MB42 (not X)? Your videos are great btw thank you!
Adrian Plascencia , first of all the Micca 42X is the much better speaker than the regular 42 model. it has a very high quality crossover and sounds way better. as far as the Dayton's go, if I were you if you have the room. definitely get the new Dayton B-652 AIR, it has the new AMT tweeter and is extremely good
I got two of these. For free. Why? Because the right channel kept going out.Parts Express is awesome when it comes to customer service.I was going to send them back. They said don't bother, because shipping would be half of what these cost.So I bought the S.M.S.L.-50 for $69.00 ( I don't use headphones ),I just needed an amp.I have a pretty decent set of Harmon Kardon HKTS 2MkII 2.1-Channel Home Theater speakers ( $104 ) for my office.I gotta tell ya,the Lepai rocked !!! I bought the 6 volt power supply, and this little thing rocked my 110 sq. ft. office. The only thing I don't like is having to switch my sub on and off from the back. But hey, when they're all set up right, the Lepai smashed the S.M.S.L..It just sounds...flat.I'll probably get another Lepai and just upgrade the caps. But these things will JAM a small room. And I have it all hooked to my computer via 3.5mm jack and just the MB.Pretty sweet.
Gary Ortolano , no no no, just get an 20 volt / 5 amp power supply and don't bother with any soldering of any caps !!!!!!!!! you will get 25 wpc @ 4 ohms with that power supply, I am !!!!!!!!!!!! rocks out 2 pair of Micca 42Xs, big time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi man, i have listened to your advice and bought the Lepai Lepy LP-V3s on amazon, there was no 2020, just 2024 with 5A power brick, When i have Tone button activated it shounds bad at high volume, when i deactivate it at high volume it sounds ok, but what do u think about sound quality on this amp ? Right now i am using those home theatre speakers and i have 0 low frequecies, no bass. I will buy some good speakers later on, something like Mackie CR4BT cuz i live in Italy and the speakers u review i cannot find them. but what do u think is this amp good enough to play good speakers with perfect sound quality ?
uNd1 , once again with you people and this issue...... LEPY & LEPAI ARE NOT THE SAME!!!!!!!! LEPY IS A CHEAP ASS PIECE OF SHIT that uses a shitty nock off bullshit amp chip. the LEPAI uses the Texas instruments chip. the real deal
So, I'm getting this amp with my micca MB42x's. What kind of speaker wire do you reccomend? Also, this might sound like an extremely stupid thing to do, but would a Playstation 2 slim power supply be good for this amp?
Not needed those thick wires...power consumption is very small..output power is 10 watts each channel with huge distortion..consumptions is small....2 amperes....like a toy in consumption.
Carlos Mergulhão , your oh so wrong my friend......... I'm using a 20 volt / 5 amp power supply and I'm getting about 25wpc @ 4 ohms. drives 4 ( 2-pair ) of Micca 42Xs, very very well
This is an old video, but im shocked at how much I have learned through your videos. Nobody else goes this detailed with audio equipment for the "budget" audiophiles.

Yes and yes although the Lepai is still a cheap amp. I like the SMSL's better.
Yep. Running sx6 & this amp. Love it!
JonnyFlash80 , NO, you would be way better off getting the Dayton Audio

It is probably the amp or something to do with your signal. A lepai would make a 2.0 but the logitech sub may not integrate.
Vince Phan , you need to buy a noise RCA loop isolator
looks like a brilliant little thing. Just out of curiosity, what amp are you refering to at 6:28?
Indeed 2021A. I reviewed it at the very start of this channel. It was an Ebay only buy. Today I would take an SMSL SA36 or SA50 over it.

Well switching can be done with an RCA switch. Combining really needs a mixer so you don't send an over-voltage into the amp.

Mr Z, there's no way you're having as much fun with the megabuck gear you're reviewing in 2017 - the 'trophy' case many of your flagship headphones come with cost more than this rig ! ;)
I still love a bargain.
6 year old video. Frankenstein speakers. Mad retro science Zeos.
, you used a 6 amp power supply @ how many VOLTS ???????
12
So is it
the speakers don't need more power, or
the power brick mislabeled, or
am I missing something?
Because then I could simply have gone with the cheaper Lepai LP2020A+
How would i add a sub aswell?

Taa!
I want a new pair of speakers to use with a lepai, which speakers are better the Dayton B652 or the Micca MB42 (not X)?
Your videos are great btw thank you!
In a desk setup the Micca's are better (even the non-x) if you want to do a room the bigger size of the Daytons would probably win out.
Thanks man really apreciate.
Adrian Plascencia , first of all the Micca 42X is the much better speaker than the regular 42 model.
it has a very high quality crossover and sounds way better.
as far as the Dayton's go, if I were you if you have the room.
definitely get the new
Dayton B-652 AIR, it has the new AMT tweeter and is extremely good
Link to power brick?
+Jonas Molino This will work [amzn.to/1sc7Nh1]
Jonas Molino , it's called Amazon and or Parts Express.com
good choice in music
Which lepai is better a2020+ or 168ha? Could you please leave the link for that power supply or something similar?
+UW Anethum Havent tried the 168ha.Any 12V 3a or higher will do.
I got an amplifier from 1959, with rca inputs. I love rca.
Thanks!
So, I'm getting this amp with my micca MB42x's. What kind of speaker wire do you reccomend? Also, this might sound like an extremely stupid thing to do, but would a Playstation 2 slim power supply be good for this amp?
It's in the video description.
Dragonslayer182 , speaker wire that has wire in it, usually copper dumb ass, what the hell do you think.
dumb fucking question
This cheap Lepai mini amp is very comparable to the cheap Pyle mini amp.
Not needed those thick wires...power consumption is very small..output power is 10 watts each channel with huge distortion..consumptions is small....2 amperes....like a toy in consumption.
Carlos Mergulhão , your oh so wrong my friend.........
I'm using a 20 volt / 5 amp power supply and I'm getting about 25wpc @ 4 ohms. drives 4 ( 2-pair ) of Micca 42Xs, very very well
a chinese product that doesn't lie, either it's a gold score or it's not Chinese
I know.... 10 watts is nice...looks powerful..but it is not
Carlos Mergulhão , you don't know sqat
buy a 20 volt / 5 amp power supply
No!, i am not the finger down...i put finger up.
FUC*$¨# glasses,... drives me dizzy
I give up to see..only listening....hucking glasses...awfull!
would this be any good for some panasonic 60w speakers?
