In this video we'll put R2D2 together. We'll take it from a bunch of printed parts to a painted and assembled droid.

Just wanted to let you know that this is really awesome! My 7 year old son and I are doing one now.

Feels like you overcomplicated the entire thing when it comes down to the electronics and gears... Wouldn't it be better to just have the Servo motor up top to turn the head and then have the stepper motors directly in the feet so they create more thrust then relying on gears to bring the power all the way down there? You could save on plastic too by makint the legs more hollow and widening the hole so you can run wires from the main board to the motors.

The motors will be powerful enough if you shift them down to the feet and redesign the feet so you can place them in there directly. You should also consider printing rubber tires for the wheels to grip better in ABS

Nice work. I might have a go at building this in the new year. I thought it might be more aesthetic if there was a top (lid on the body as well as the head.

+Dust Bunny Thank you! If you do build one, I'd love to see it. Also that's a good idea, I'll have to keep that in mind for round 2 with R2-D2. :)

Great model, I'd make the following changes :
    - Put the motors in the feet to avoid relying to plastic rods and gears to transmit the power
    - make a bigger hole in front of the LED with some diffusion material
    - have a second led on the side of the first one and "matrix of small holes", again with a diffusion material
    - a 3rd light with a grid in front on the back (again, diffusion material)
    - plan some room for sensors (ultrasound distance seems the most important... but a light sensor in the head could be nice)
    - plan an external access to arduino USB port

you can put instructions on a paper or print it out and sell it for cash.

Hey, for the non electronic version the file when uploaded to cura has built in supports like on the foot, do those break away easy? Also with the dowel rods, is it able to be positioned like he’s moving

    Hello, great job!
Would you have an upgraded motor enclosure for the "upgraded stepper motors".. ?
Many thanks for this great work!!

hey man, GREAT MODEL. we built a functioning r2d2 with it, we made a few changes in te wheels, and changed the whole transmision. it works. Thanks for the amazing design. i would love to contact you and send you some videos! great channel btw. Greetings from Argentina!

very very cool i was wundered why not the things what your wife paint making in blue filament put it on the body of head or feet i think it.s better.

you should never run motors straight from a Arduino The Arduino does not supply enough amperage to run the motors. If you use a separate power supply for the motors I believe that you have more than enough torque to move the Robot but stepper motors are a slow moving motor but have high torque

hello chaos, sorry but do not know much English, I'm using google translator, I have already printed head and body, I'm starting to paint, I feel real problem I used adhevica tape but profiles are regrettable, as you have done it also exists some trick to painting pla I do not know? wonderful work, is my favorite for many years robot, thank you very much.

      @ChaosCoreTech0  8 років тому

+jose luis Regueiro Hi Jose! No problem, I think I know what you're saying. :) As far as the adhesive tape, I tried to make it so you wouldn't need tape or glue, just the screws to hold it together. And as for painting it, we just use water-based acrylic paints. You can also use plastic spray primer first to help the paint stick better. Hope all goes well. :)
