Today I had a colleague asking for some support on some .NET dev and the first person I thought about was you and your UA-cam channel and I realised how much I learnt from your content, so it's a symbolic gesture but to show appreciation! Keep it up!
Just upgraded my AI project built using .NET MAUI 7 to 8, just by following this video. James, I have no words to thank you on upskilling all of us in this journey.
Nice guide. Please make a similar one for the MacOS. My upgrade to net8 on that platform did not go as smooth and seamlessly as shown here for windows. So it would be a great thing to learn. Thanks in advance.
Can you guys please cover more desktop for us desktop devs . I use flutter for mobile and winforms for desktop, I’m now trying (and failing miserably) to port my winforms app to Maui to get windows and Mac support. The lack of basic controls is very frustrating ! How to do basic dialog forms ? Why don’t context menus work on Mac ? Why do radio buttons look rubbish on Mac ? My app looks and functions great on window but on Mac it shockingly bad and buggy. Please help us…
@@zoiobnu Context Menu does not work on Mac (it turns into a swipe on ListViews). I'm unable to do the equivalent of Form.OpenDialog() (I guess I have to use a flyout but not the experience I'm looking for on a desktop UI). Tabbing from one Entry to another simply does not work on mac for me. Radio buttons are always black on Mac which is no good on a dark theme. I'm slowly coming to realise that I need to give up on replicating traditional desktop UX and just go with what MAUI can do. I've just updated to .net8 and it's much better than before, at least the list view on mac no longer has render glitches, so that's a massive win. I am noticing Entry text colours are not always applying correctly, sometimes the colour I set Is used, some times it's black, a clean and rebuild seems to fix it for most of my controls but not all, I have one Entry control that is set the current datetime bound to a vm property, that just will not pick up the correct text colour. Also, I can no long see my .xaml files in Visual Studio for mac (since updating to .net8), I think i'll have to switch to vs code. I'm happy enough now but I've had to admit defeat on many things I expect to be able to do. hi, When will we get the Firebase nuget package for .net 7/ .net 8? Is it in the pipeline ? We're struggling with the firebase integration as there is no firebase package provided by Microsoft for .net 7. Any tentative timelines would be great as we are having constant pressure from the client for firebase feature. Thank you in advance
Hello James, Thanks for your great content, It helped me so much back in Xamarin days and now with MAUI, I am having trouble now with using UDP port with my MAUI app, If it's possible to make a video about using MAUI app to send and receive data via UDP port it will be greatly appreciated.
Amazing informative video james .. could you please make a tutorial about making push notifications when applicatiion is not running or phone started and app not open yet for Maui Blazor iOS
@@JamesMontemagno thanks I’ll get it setup this week. I’m hoping there’s some huge updates brewing for VS Code MAUI plugin as developing MAUI just feels faster and smoother for me on Mac (even as a long standing VS on Windows user, something just feels smoother. VS for Mac wasn’t perfect but felt like a nice blend between VS and VS Code since it supported the essential stuff for modern projects without too much legacy stuff cluttering it up)
Much better look @James. I tried .NET MAUI with the initial release of .NET 6 and got so frustrated I just quit. I'm hoping .NET 8 provides a much improved experience and some important features I needed for my application.
Hii James , i have a 1 doubt in flyoutitem and tab bar item : Tab Bar has a Attribute to display a FlyoutItemIsVisible="False/True" But there is no attribute on flyout item to diplay Tabbaritemvisible Is that possible any other way to do it ?
Do I need to do anything in my Mac to make this work for IOS development. I connect remotely to the mac. Basically I can build and debug on a physical iOS device and I can build the app using the remote mac, But I can't debug on a virtual device. I get a "clang++ exited with code 1" error
Nice haircut looks in my opinion better! BTW just askin, what do u think about a feature in visual studio like update maui version that would perform all that updates and reflect the changes to the proj files? That would be nice. Something like android studio has.
Hello James. Maybe you have an impact on Microsoft's management, and can make it so that this demo weather app (which looks good I think) replaces inbox web-app in Windows 10/11? This will for sure show that Microsoft is interested in the framework. Thanks.
Hi James - I really find your videos very helpful, please keep them coming. One question I have is around XAML and .Net Maui docs. I generally know what I want to do with a UI but thee are so many options and switches. I think back to what I consider the golden days of programming in VB, Java and C++. What I miss the most are the awesome manuals that Sun used to put out. You would find one topic, IDE component or Method per one or two pages. It would in plain language tell you what it does and provide a simple in context example. It was well indexed and I could find things I wanted quickly. What I feel is lacking today is something similar. I know books cannot be a medium given how quickly .Net changes. But is there a good source where I can just search for say "border" and be show the various ways one can be used and in what context and with code examples. Regarding Microsoft docs - sorry but I have never found them to be that well organized. Sun takes the prize for me. They were big books but I wore them out! LOL
Upgrading as per you instructions didn't work for me, I just created a new project in VS preview with the same name space and dropped all my files in and all good. Thanks for the video, MAUI is great I just hope the desktop experience matures on the MAC side, very lacking at the moment.
Shoot me an email and let me know what went wrong. I had an older older project and i needed to update the files in the resources and a windows appxpackage file as well, but from 7 to 8 i didn't have issues
Hey James, is there any features in .NET 8 we could use in .NET MAUI for biometric authentication? Could you make an updated video about the state of the art in this topic? All videos/docs I have found on the internet are really outdated. Thanks!
Hello James! Nice video. Suggestion for next video - How to get (read) incoming call id (phone number) using MAUI (if is possible) on Android device (optional iOS)?
Thanks for the video James ! But I am quite disappointed that MAUI ticket 1069 wasn't considered for .NET8. Because we use Maui Hybrid and having Web as a separate platform folder would improve our dev experience. Ofc this makes sense only for MAUI Hybrid and not for pure MAUI because then you would need to be able to render web UI from XAML.
In my Blazor Hybrid video you can just use your Blazor components/pages in a blazor app and share them between the projects with a Razor Class Library. Which is what the issue is looking for. They have fundamentally different startup and middleware at this point.
@@JamesMontemagno We currently use this exact approach you describe. I know it is an issue that influence less people than some more general ones with wider reach and prioritizing other features probably makes more sense but still there is this small disappointment because this ticket was for a while tagget in .NET8 roadmap 😢
Is James singing up to the army or something , or is he putting a ring on that wifes finger possibly ? Good to see the beard gone mate lol but god go clean shaving dude lol
Microsoft has several mobile apps in the app stores that were built with React Native. How many Maui apps does Microsoft have? Any? Maui has fallen far, far behind React Native and Flutter in terms of mindshare and market share. Maui / XAML development also feels old and clunky. I can't help but think that Maui is the walking dead. Remember the promises made by Microsoft about Silverlight, before Microsoft pulled the plug? I think Maui we're seeing the same thing with Maui. It's not long for this world.
I'm interested in and will continue following MAUI but I have a lot of the same reservations. The thing that always kept me from going React Native / Flutter is needing to learn Swift and Kotlin for platform-specific stuff, but I'm getting over that hump. I'm also learning that building UIs with native SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose isn't all that time-consuming.
@@TVsBen - I've earned my living with Microsoft technologies since 1993. I love Microsoft. But sometimes they agitate the hell out me. Maui is the latest thing to agitate the hell out of me. For this same reason we use Blazor for UI, because also in case MAUI would die like Silverlight (what theoretically wont happen because it is still opensource) we can migrate to Avalonia or Uno with minimal changes.

@@JamesMontemagno - I have already seen the video that you referenced. It doesn't answer my question. What technology is Microsoft itself using to build apps for the app stores? As far as I can tell, it's React Native. That tells me a lot. Also, Maui is not really new. It's an upgrade from Xamarin, which has been around a long time. Is Maui's market share growing faster than Xamarin's market share is shrinking?
