- When a cave tube becomes extremely restrictive, one cannot navigate side to side... or sometime even backing up. You must proceed forward, when going back is no longer an option.

That’s what I get out of every video 💕
Beast Mode: off [ON ]
lol he did!
Him did
He’s awesome!!!
My dad's given me that "paths" speech. I didn't listen to him because he was very much NOT using a cave to illustrate his point.
Lol, good dad. I feel like this speech makes a lot more sense when you're in your mid 40s! The path to the best life often leaves a good life behind.
😂😂😁
LOL
"I can still turn my head."
Ya know, it's the little things.
Also, so cool that it loops.
That cave is FULL of surprises. It's very hard to navigate.
I love the little speeches you give while being deep inside a dark, moist and tight space. Your content is going to blow up even more in 2021, mark my words.
Thanks. I run my mouth to distract me from that which I am afraid of.
Okay that's kind of creepy
100% he reaches 100k this year. Consistency!!!
His wife said the exact same thing!
@@CalvinHikes what a great tool a humans mind is..
When you said “this is gonna suck” and said excuse me after is when I realized how genuine and honest person you are, and I wish to be more like you one day
Well that's a wonderful compliment thank you! It's also nice of you to simply aspire to kindness. We may fail but we are attempting to be decent.
am i the only one who seen a skull face when the screen fades? lmao 11:25
Good catch!
Yea man it’s there....
Haha - I catched it too. Played it back and seen it at 11:27. nice little easter egg :)
Pause at exactly 11:27.
Slow the speed down and then pause it. 11:28 Makes it easier.
Just me or does he kind of look like a young John Malkovich? Love your content and your anecdotes. Stay safe!
Ahhh you beat me to it by 8 months lol. Yes he does.
You are a fascinating person. You’re also incredibly photogenic and well spoken. I know you didn’t do extra takes lol. Be safe and keep leading Jacob down the right path brother. 🤘🏻❤️
All fine compliments thank you! We just out here havin a good time.
Those were some deep thoughts you shared, Jacob is so fortunate to have a role model like you in his life. You always find ways to make it fun while still being very serious. You give Jacob enough freedom so that he gets to feel the full sense of accomplishment while still being safe. We need more mentors like Calvin in this troubled world...
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you mentioning the balance between fun and serious. There's a sweet spot in there somewhere. Because life is serious. But you should have a fun time doing it. That is almost never easy.
The farthest I ever gone into a cave is about 60 feet. I don't think I'll do what you did even for one million.
nice to look at it again. it never gets boring. your channel is so underrated
Thank you!
Damn you’re strong as hell dude that bit at the start
Thanks yo.
The philosophical discussion at the beginning was something i didn't expect. Man you went deep, both figuratively and literally.
Yes! In general I like to talk my way through subjects even on my own. Sometimes it's fun to attach it to a caving video. We're all Just trying to work our way through our lives! Through the darkness!
5:57 "Sometimes you choose a path, you choose a job, you get married, you have kids and you're like 'THIS IS NOT WHAT I WANTED'. Well, it's what you have and you have to deal with it." I could see his wife watching this and confronting him "What are you trying to say?"
The path I chose did not include a wife!
The only person to bother me is me and I do it plenty.
Yes, decided to load this up here as well as on the Second Channel! For reasons.

When I click the second channel link it says channel not found / don't exist
You've got a new patron! So stoked to support you guys
Thank you.
How wonderful. Thank you.
The link available in the description works but for some reason the one in the comments won't click through. I don't know why that is right now.
love this posted this to my fb page alot of people need to hear about the point of no return so they can stop tryng to back track and just move forward with the path they have already layed for them selfs.
Very cool. It's difficult to back up in life because time essentially does not permit it.
The first time UA-cam recommended me your videos, I thought it would be impossible even to watch it. Im a claustrophobic person. Video after video, though, you guys are helping me overcome it. My favourite videos (of course) are those where u talk about why thinking that you will get stuck is not the most important thing u have to worry about caves. It has been a couple of months now since I’ve subscribed and Im already thinking of getting on a cave. Thank you so much for that. Keep the good job, because certainly u are helping lots of people. Wish you guys the very best.
Greetings from Brazil and Italy!
Wow, you've come a long ways! the brave parts of you must be in charge of the cowardly parts. That's how we become stronger.
@@CalvinHikes Come to Italy to make a special video! Have a family friend in Calabria that does excursions in the wild Italy and he would be glad to meet u guys 💪🏽💪🏽
What an unexpected gem of life wisdom! I am close to point of no return and got stuck. I still have a decent and safe option to choose, but far from ideal. Hard work doesn't guarantee success and didn't pay off. Thanks for the great content! Live long and prosper! ;)
And you too! Isn’t life a kick at times!! Not all of our “kicks” have been pleasant.
Awesomw Video! I really hope that UA-cam algorithm helps the Channel out. Video quality and editing is extremely good for the Channels size
Thank you. UA-cam's algorithm is stingy but it is steadily increasing for us.
Wow, such sage life advice in this video. I’m 3 min in and your cave exploration is my metaphorical life to a T.
This was DEEPER than I expected…*smirk*
IDK what's up with the UA-cam algorithm but I'm convinced it's trying to help me. I'm at an event horizon in my life and I just want to give up and these videos are recommended to me out of order but they just happen to be ones where your messages speaks directly to my current situation. You are very wise.
Well I'm glad it's encouraging. I don't make speeches in all my videos but on our second Channel I do make more speeches.
It matters not. Sometimes people say quitting is not an option. But it is! It's the most readily available easiest to take option. But we don't take it. There is something better ahead for you. You may not like where you're at, but if you're patient, you may just wake up one day not with just a different perspective, but a different life.
@@CalvinHikes thank you.
You are quite a philosopher. Enjoyed it. Stay safe, please!
Hahaha... Thanks.
We will not stay safe though.
Wow as a 22 year old who lost his mom before hughschool and dad was a drunk i started my path a lot earlier then most young people and so just hearing you talk about once you decide your point of no return amnd you just have to figure things out when they come your way spoke to me
Tremendously ! Such cool parallels between what you were doing and life
I'm almost certain life is not supposed to be this tough on a on someone such as yourself. But It sounds like you've wrestled through some of the difficulties and are becoming a gracious person in spite of those difficulties.
Man, the final moment with the multiple choices... the cave looked like an skull-ish creepy structure.
That is now called the skull room.
i love the superimposed skull at 11:23. Great video!🤙
Lol, yep that definitely a tight squeeze!❤️
I like the textures of the rock in this cave, those smoother passages would make a nice path through a garden. Your so lucky to have so many amazing places to explore. There is no big cave networks where i live but i found a very rugged volcanic area but recently found some smaller volcanic pockets along cliffs while climbing a mountain called Mount Lindsay. So im hoping to find an entrance way to something bigger if i take my time.
Mount Lindsay down under? I'm just curious where that's a pretty common name for a mountain. But saying there are no big cave networks where you live is a line I've heard before. And I can say without knowing where you live that it's not true.
We live one in one of the least cave areas of our country. Caves are generally plentiful everywhere but the caving world has kept quite private. Digging for your own caves is very difficult to do so good for you for finding something.
If you aggressively want to be a caver I would encourage you to search online for caving groups and try to join one. Otherwise digging through the internet to find information on caves it's also helpful. Cuz finding them out in the wild is pretty difficult to do but starting on Mount Lindsay is probably going to be pretty fun for you. It's fun to explore. At least you're outside you know not inside watching videos all day. let us know how it goes.
@ 11:22 the tunnel system mixed with the light/shadows looks like a skull. Anyone else see it?
Oh yeah, great videos by the way. I cannot stop watching!
Pause it at 11:28. He put a skull picture over the top of it to make it look more like a skull lol. But it does look like a skull without the image either way!
@@drunkleted1823 Yeah, noticed that, too lol. Kinda skeeved me out a bit. Cuz I was definitely noticing the skull-like appearance before and that fadeout with the light and image overlay was done perfectly that I didn't realize there was an overlaid image at first and had to back up to look at that transition closer.
Great one. You’d possibly have your own nat geo show if this was the 00s.
That's a decent perspective. I mean some people's compliments saying that we could be on TV but that is a previous generation. This probably isn't that era. And it's not necessary UA-cam is great!
What a inspiration you are!!
Absolutely bonkers lol I'm subbing
Thanks!
One word amazing . 👊
Scary movies no longer scare me so I watch this.
Really like this one. Awesome words man , keep it up
this video includes life lessons, I really liked it.
Thank you.
We've relegated most of our life lessons to the 2nd channel.
After watching all your videos my blanket feels like a cave now🙄
Thats why we dont sleep -Jacob
Dude love it. I wouldn't do it because I'm to chubby and gain and lose weight in several minutes so I probably would get stuck.
Wise word dude, noted 👍
11:21 I noticed how the cave looked like a skull.
I really appreciate you. The wisdom seems to come from experience. How did you come to understand the paths? what were your choices? Your insights really resonate w me. Thank you
Thank you.
I mostly regurgitate what I read.
Then when I'm speaking it out it is filtered through my own experiences.
I believe this conversation came after reading the book "Midlife: a philosophical guide."
This guys like a Tony Robbins / bear grylls combo
Lol. Thats high praise. Reeealy ve interested to put mr Grills through a lava tube.
@@CalvinHikes you deserve your own tv show mate. One of the most interesting channels on UA-cam hands down
If nutty putty ever reopened would you consider visiting it?
Yes but it's not only closed it probably no longer exists. They put a lot of dynamite in their in probably collapsed most of it. These caves we are exploring are probably more dangerous than nutty putty.
that was an awesome life lesson at the beginning
Thanks yo. It's a hard one to learn.
I want to start caving really bad but I have no friends who cave and honestly have no clue what equipment I need and what cave to start in😂
It is always going to be difficult to find people to cave with because it is not everyone's cup of tea. But we will be helping with that from our 2nd channel.
cave philosopher
I can't tell if it's easier or more difficult to think while doing some of this.
Pause at 11.27 and the three tunnels make a skull wtf. Did you overlay this pic in dude 💀
Yes. That is the skull room, as 8t looks like a human skull and I overlaid a real one on top for a moment. Good catch.
@@CalvinHikes no way thats awesome. Thanks for the breathtaking content 👍👍👍
like the philosophy lessons 👌🏽
Don't know if anyone caught it but at 11:18 and until the next shot, when the light goes dim, you can see a skull.
I get it. It's therapeutic. Instead of seeing a psychiatrist or therapist, one can put their life into perspective by caving.
Still, I'd rather see a psychiatrist. 🤣
That's about the most correct comment I've seen. Of the thousands.
Imagine someone else comes in to explore the cave, and decides to go up your rope. That would be so spooky at first when you first heard them or saw another light xD
Also i feel like i was getting lecture of psychology with doctor phil there for a minute haha, loved it.
It's VERY rare to see someone else in a non tourist cave. We usually leave something outside the entrance, so folks know someone is inside.
How do you know where you’re going? Like, in an instance you feel like you’re lost, what happens? Like you said, it looks like you’re going straight but there are lots of different ways you could go.
If I don't know where I'm going, I make a rock pile whenever I take a turn. So if I get lost I can just follow the rock piles back to the entrance.
The rest is very educated guessing. Caves and lava flow have a particular way they tend to develop, based on the rock, gravity and a number of other factors. Being knowledgeable (or at least experienced) about the way caves are helps to navigate. But we still get turned around sometimes!
did you not drag your son along this time 😂 great video idk how you keep your cool!
He has to go to zoom school sometimes.
You guy's don't ever get afraid or think you're going to get trapped inside?
Fear arises but we push it aside.
11:27 anyone else see that skeleton face, or am I dumb and that’s on purpose
Its intentional, but probably doesnt make you dumb. That part of the cave looks like a real skull, so I added a real one for a split second
That entrance ? or exit does look kinda like a skull!! ;)
That is the skulll room! And I overlaid the video with a real skull.
Great video keep it up
What is it that at the end of the video when you show the last 3 ways to go the cave looks like it’s shaped like a skull!!!?
That is the skull room.
@@CalvinHikes I love your videos I could never do that stuff, watching your videos is the closest thing I get to doing anything like that.
What If your flashlights stop working?
Have you ever encountered other people in the cave when you was in there?
No. Only in tourist caves. The caves we go to are in extremely remote locations and are only visited a few times a year at most.
@@CalvinHikes oh well ur content is fun to watch and u deserve way more subscribers than what u have but keep up the good work. c:
Sir how many torches and camera do you use ?bty I love your videos 🤩🤩💛
Many. My 2 primary lights are extremely large and bright. And I carry multiple cameras. As well as audio equipment. Carrying the gear through the cave and setting it up is extraordinarily difficult. And I suspect that is why you do not see many other caving videos quite like these.
Did anyone notice the skull @11:28
Yes! Nice catch. ; )
My claustrophobia had a hard time watching this
That's the trick: the brave parts of you must be in charge of the cowardly parts. And thus, you grow stronger.
I am claustrophobic too but watching these videos is great . I don’t mind seeing other people in cave aslong as it’s not me
if we had paypal here i would have gifted you
Thanks! Keep your money and enjoy the show!
hey i was wondering what you would do in the case of emergency like somebody getting stuck. i noticed that its mostly you and your nephew so what would you do in that case? would you leave your nephew to go get help or let him leave you for help? that seems like a very scary situation to me even tho getting stuck is very unlikely
We have tools for getting unstuck. We are literally the people that get called if someone gets stuck. So we have lots of tools for it. We are part of a caving community and we help each other if necessary.
If I got stuck Jacob knows how to use the tools and he also knows how to call for help and he also knows how to drive for help.
All that being said, it's just super unlikely. The odds of us getting stuck are far greater than you could imagine.
@@CalvinHikes okay thats good to know i know getting stuck is very unlikely but its still something that scares me. Also your videos have really made me want to go out and explore nature and possibly even caves. Would it be safe to start spelunking with some friends with the basic information from youtube or would you always recommend a cave expert?
Feck that HELL NO!!
I wonder what you guys dream when you were in caves the whole day
Whenever I start to dream about caves I usually take a week off.
Rainier!
Hope for go there together with you guys , 😀😀
Anyone else see the light at 11:30 -11:31 top left corner??
11:25 that formation, when the light and showdow play on it, looks kinda....ominous...
The Skull Room, I think.
You’re an interesting man, my friend. And your videos are extremely interesting. However, every time I reach the point of no return in life, my wife divorces me and sends me right back to square one! Kinda throws a wrench in your thesis. Stay safe.
Every thesis gets wrecked eventually. Usually by other humans.
Man I love caves I don’t wanna go inside of them I wanna see somebody did it on UA-cam so I watch you every day on you do a UA-cam you the best caveman it’s cool to watch your videos 👍
Thanks! It's pretty fun.
:0 I didn’t know he was going to talk to me OMG 😱
came for the caving, stayed for the life advice.
Glad we didn't scare you away with our rambling! Sometimes I can't help myself
Amen
This was inspiring and I needed this to give me the push to make it through finals.
Cal gives some great advice !!love it❤
Good talk today, man! I'm 30, and starting to feel the beginning of the constriction of options. Especially since lately I've been realizing I want to make some big changes, but I'm not sure in what direction. It's starting to feel like there's less time to vascillate though. It's an interesting time to be in! Caving feels like a great analogy for it
Life is a vacillation between choices. There are times when you just have to pick a direction and move foreward. We often have to leave good things behind in our search for what is better.
This talk was great. It's not just caves people get trapped in, but paths in life. And sometimes there's one way out.
I want to start caving but then I remember I’m way to tall uncoordinated and don’t live near any caves
It would be cool to see a Q&A video with all your scariest, craziest, funniest, moments in your adventures.
There's one on our patreon page! And it's free. It's just on the page. It's 10 minutes and it's exactly what you're looking for. www.patreon.com/cavemanhikes
these videos and your monologes in the cave give me so much comfort and happiness. thank you for doing what you do. always look forward to the uploads
Well that is a tremendously nice thing to say, thank you. Promoting calmness is one of our goals. Adventure and peace.
“...let it remain a mystery.” Well damn, we got ourselves a philosophic cave man. Most likely the only one on UA-cam. Or do you prefer Cave Man philosopher?
This is what happens when Jacob isn't with me!
Philosophical stuff going on in thar cave!! you understand life. To few people know the consequences of PonR. Thats why many people regret afterwards.
Yeah people regret a lot of things.
11:26 i see what you did there
Love the metaphor throughout the video. There have been times in my life where I thought I was at the point of no return. Lucky I still had the chance to turn around and I did. I'm grateful for that.
The life lessons in this video were right on point for my life right now. Was not expecting that from a caving video.
Cool thank you
Thank you for the speech in this video, man. It was really important for me to hear something like that, so I can start choosing my paths more wisely and not end up going a way I don't want to. Thank you so much.
You're welcome, I really appreciate you saying something. I never know about my ramblings.
I think, if you're the kind of person who's concerned with choosing good paths... you're likely to lead and excellent life.
Does anyone see the huge skull at 11:21... wow, now that’s CREEPY!!
This is my favorite video of all your videos, so far.

Yet again another amazing video this one had my stomach in knots sometimes and youre just as cool as a cucumber. Great advice on techniques and life. Much love brother keep on crawling on!
Thanks again man huge fan of yours
Thank you.
Respect man I been watching Nothing but these videos for a few days now and blows my mind how chill you can be
Thank you. Chill is what our videos are about. The caving is incidental.
Amazing videos !!!
Damn… maybe I need to slither down a tight cave and get enlightened.
i like this stuff but i could never go in thight caves because im little bit claustrophobic
It may help if you play some catchy song just to calm your claustrophobic while you tryjng to cave in
Love your videos, the best caving videos on youtube!
I could never do this stuff so thanks for showing us all!
Thank you and youre welcome!
I don't know why I keep watching these because I'm getting anxiously just watching this. I don't understand why anyone would want to do this for fun
Hey, if you make us some caving cookies, maybe with our label or logo, we'd give your cookie channel a shout if you wanted. You don't even need to send us the cookies but if you make a video that we could use that would be sufficient. Just for fun.
If you want.
