The people in this series have all lived in Korea for more than 6 months! They all love Korean food and culture and have tried the usual stuff like Kimbab, Samgyeopsal, Bulgogi ect. So therefore I am trying to show them some interesting foods that they might not get a chance to eat normally! Stuff that many foreigners who visit here, never get a chance to try! So ‘Meongge’ in English is called sea pineapple
‘멍게’를 영어로 씨 파인애플이라고 불러

I would say this almost looks like egg
솔직히 계란 같다고 할 수도 있을 것 같은데
Like an omelet or something
오믈렛이나 뭐 그런 것 같아 보이니까

With ‘Galbi’ (BBQ Meat)
반찬 같아 보이는데

조금 오징어 같아 보이고, 좀 질길 것 같아

솔직히 이거 보고 나서 생각이 난 게

“큰 애벌레 자르면 이런 모양이겠구나”…
You know like mussels, oysters
홍합이라던가 굴이라던가
I think it’s gonna taste like that
그런 맛이 날 것 같다
Now I want you to pick a piece up

냄새가 어떤 지 맡아봐
It smells like sea water
바다 냄새가 나는데
You know when you dive into water
왜 바다에 다이빙 해서 들어갔는데
And you get too much sea water up your nose
코로 바닷물이 확 들어왔을 때
That’s exactly what it smells like
그 느낌에 그 냄새야
I’d say that has more of a generic sea food smell
딱 해산물 하면 생각나는 냄새야
That smells like a whale carcass

고래 시체 냄새가 있다면 이럴 것 같다는 거지
Now the thing about this
하나 말해줄 게 있는데
Is that it’s supposed to be eaten in spring
이건 봄이 제철이야
In spring it has this really nice aroma
봄에 나는 멍게는 향이 정말 끝내줘
And that’s the best time to eat it
그 때가 바로 제철이거든
But obviously it’s not spring
하지만 지금은 당연히 봄은 아니지
So it’s a little bit out of season
그래서 제철에서 조금 벗어났어
So you’ve got to bare that in mind
그걸 기억해주시길 바라요
We’re gonna eat it raw first
우선은 생으로 먹어보고
Then we’re gonna try the dipping sauce with it
그 다음에는 장에 찍어먹는 거야

너무나도 불운한 나머지 입에 바닷물이 한 가득 들어온 느낌인데

That’s exactly what it tastes like

Now some people like to eat it with wasabi
어떤 사람들은 고추냉이랑 이걸 같이 먹어

And some people don’t
어떤 사람들은 그렇게 안 먹고
So you can choose whether you add wasabi or not
고추냉이에 찍을 지 안 찍을지는 그냥 결정하면 돼
But it is generally eaten with the gochu jang sauce
하지만 대부분은 초고추장이랑 같이 먹지
