Honey, you are a champion for doing this now. Back when my kids were babies, in the early 1990s, my grocery budget was $20 per week. I cooked everything from scratch. I came home with 5 bags of groceries. We went to food town (Food lion) and the meat market and the bread thrift. It was a struggle. I wouldn't trade it for nothing. Keep spreading the news. What made me mad is how much work I put into it, couponing and buying sticker meat, which I still do even tho I don't have to, and my damn landlord thought we were in need and brought a bunch of junk food to my house once. I was appreciative but we didn't eat processed food. We ate cooked at home food.
It's so much easier to eat on a budget, if one makes a meal plan & personal inventory. Also, $28 at a $1 only store, would have bought 28 items! One can eat decently, with those 28 items. Also, some of those 28 items, will last more than a week, such as the Brown sugar, so next week, the $1 that would have bought that, can buy something else. Here's what I would have bought at a $1 only store, for $28, for 2 people, & what I would have done with it. I'm vegan, & don't drink coffee or tea, so I save a LOT, by not buying, coffee, tea, creamer to put in them, or animal derivatives. 1. Bread 2. Peanut Butter 3. Jelly (PB&J all week) 4. Flour 5. Garlic mashed potatoes (instant potatoes, margarine & garlic powder) 2. Garlic bread ( bread, margarine & garlic powder) 3. Vegan Shepherd's pie (broth, lentils, canned corn, mashed potatoes, garlic & onion powder) 4. vegetable soup (broth/bullion, Italian Seasoning, mixed vegetables , onion & garlic powder & beans & rice) 5. Pasta dish, pasta, tomato sauce, Italian Seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder-with a few lentils in the sauce for protein) 6. PB&J (bread, peanut butter & jelly) 7. Pumpkin muffins ( a 15-16 oz. can of pureed pumpkin, can make probably 24 muffins, if 1/2 a cup of pumpkin is used per 6 muffins), flour, baking powder, brown sugar, nuts 8. Fruit muffins, fruit cocktail, flour, baking powder (syrup in the can of fruit, is used as the sugar in the recipe) 9. beans & rice (olive oil, beans, rice, onion powder, garlic powder, margarine or broth) 10. pancakes/waffles (if u have a waffle iron) ( flour, baking powder, water, brown sugar, margarine) could put peanut butter on or in them, or jelly. 11. oatmeal, (oatmeal, Cinnamon, brown sugar) 12. popcorn (as a snack) (popped popcorn, margarine) 13. Cinnamon toast (bread, Cinnamon & margarine) 14. Possibly biscuits (flour, baking powder, margarine) 15. Cinnamon Rolls (flour, baking powder, margarine, brown sugar) 16. tortillas (flour, water, oil, possibly baking powder, it's been awhile since I made any) 17. oatmeal cookies (flour, baking powder, oatmeal, brown sugar, margarine, Cinnamon, etc.) So, this is eating pretty well, for $28 per 2 people, for a week, if you learn to cook, prep food, & bake. Then, the next week, you may not have to buy onion & garlic powder, Italian Seasoning, or brown sugar, so you buy 4 different things, like dried parsley, coffee, tea, plant based beverage (oat/soy/rice "milk, etc.) other drinks/juice, more vegetables, or cans of soup, pancake syrup, raisins, flax seeds (to grind, to use as an egg substitute in baking,) etc. By the end of the month, you'll have probably 3 spices, (onion & garlic powder & cinnamon) & 2 dried herbs (Italian Seasoning & Parsley), that you'll start building up your seasonings, for more flavor in your edibles. Next month, buy 5 more herbs, or spices, instead of the ones you already have, to build up a nice selection. Also, you could get more fruits & vegetables into this starter meal plan for the next week, by going to Walmart, to get produce, where some of it, is LESS than a dollar, such as 99 cent bunch of kale, 23 cent bananas, 88 cent green peppers, etc. Also, if you want to save a lot of money, pay attention to servings per package. For example, I bought a 16 oz. box of ORGANIC, shell pasta, for $2. $2 divided by 2 people = ONE DOLLAR per person, per MONTH! (see below) There are 8 servings per box, divided by 2 people, = 4 servings per person. That means that those 2 people, could have a pasta dish, once a week, for 4 weeks (a MONTH), at a cost of 25 CENTS per serving! Of course people wouldn't eat it plain, so divide a 15 oz. can of pasta sauce, from the $1 store, (or Walmart) to put on it. $1 divided by 2 people= 50 cents. So now a serving of pasta, with nearly a cup of sauce on it, (perhaps too much sauce? Then divide the can of sauce into 4 1/2 cup servings (add 1 ounce of diced onion, or green pepper, to make a 15 ounce can, an exact 16 ounce can, that can now be divided exactly evenly) will cost 50 CENTS per 1 cup serving, or 25 CENTS per 1 4th cup serving. So the pasta meal, now costs either 75 cents (pasta & 1 cup of sauce), or 50 cents (per pasta serving & 1/2 a cup of sauce). That still leaves $1.25 (-75 cents - cost of pasta, & 1 cup of sauce), or $1.50 (- 50 cents - cost of pasta, with half a cup of sauce) for additional meal elements, such as coffee/tea/fruit/mini salad/garlic bread, fruit, etc. If one opts for the half a cup of sauce, as a serving, then one would need two $1 cans of pasta sauce to equal the same amount of servings as the 16 oz. box of pasta has (8 servings). That would = $2 for the 16 oz. box of pasta per month, + $2 for two cans of pasta sauce, to go on it, to = $4 PER MONTH, for 2 people, or $2 a month, EACH person. That's $2 a MONTH, not $2 a WEEK per person. So, servings per container, divided by the cost per serving, can equal some extremely cheap, BUT NUTRITIOUS meals. This also works with edibles, that aren't in containers, like a banana, or green pepper. If a banana cost 24 cents each, and you eat the whole banana, that = 24 cents per serving. If you share the one banana, by dividing it in two (perhaps to top oatmeal for 2 people), it will then make 2 servings, at 12 cents each! Few people, eat a whole green bell pepper as a single serving. So, when you buy one green bell pepper, think how you'll use it up b4 it might go bad. Perhaps when you get the pepper home, divide it into 3rds. One 3rd to eat fresh on salads/wraps, the 2nd third, to eat in a few days, perhaps in a stir fry. Then dice & freeze the last 3rd, to maybe use on the weekend in soup, chili, or another cooked dish, or even to put in pasta sauce. If you start to do this, you can start to curb food waste. Perhaps just buy one head of loose leaf lettuce, to use in sandwiches, wraps, tacos, salads, etc, instead of buying a Spring Mix, or other packaged salad mix, just for salads, or tacos/wraps (shredded lettuce in bags) for an additional cost. Just shred the loose leaf lettuce yourself ,to make tacos, etc., instead of buying 2 separate lettuces.
Clearly you have never shopped at dollar General or family dollar. NO fresh or frozen produce. $1. items, not on your list. Example exvoo $4. These stores are very expensive in comparison. But they are the only grocery stores within 20 miles. Without a car your stuck. Gardening is essential. If you want chicken, it won't come from dg/fd. I might get a ride to Aldi once in a blue moon. So all cooking is from scratch.
@@Pamela-jr3ht She is talking about dollar stores like Dollar Tree or the 99 cent store where everything is actually one dollar. She did not tell anyone to go to the other stores. Nothing at a dollar store ever costs more than one dollar. A few things are less than one dollar.
Good vid! Something would have to come off the list so I could buy a small chicken. For 2 people it can provide meat for 5 meals. It can be cut up into 10 pieces, bbq, fried and the best budget saver - Chicken and rice (it goes a really long way)! And for long range planning, if you have freezer space, at Thanksgiving time you can get a 20 pound turkey for $12.00 ( .59 cents a pound). Cut it up into pieces and freeze it. Just imagine how many meals you could make.
You can increase your lifespan to twenty-five with low protein diets like that! We have to tell generation z! They can increase their lifespan to age twenty-five by eating nothing but rice, beans and other plants and save money at the same time like people did in ancient Mexico!
Sprouts is cheaper on Wednesdays on produce and your dried foods are cheaper from the bins, ie. beans, oats, flour, organic candy 🍬- just a suggestion. 😊
Know what to shop for where and how, still geography does not provide better options. Overhead and competing with other grocery stores drives prices up. For example small cabbage head 2.99 and higher whereby one shopper got 3/$2, etc.
I’m saving for a house so trying to budget more and live frugal. I don’t live in the US and I’m spending about $120 per week in groceries. My goal is to bring that to $90-$100.
Try burritos they can be made in many ways Soup all kinds of homemade styles. Baked bread, corn bread. Peanut butter. Buying bulk is the best way to go. One of my favorites is Black beans, Cole slaw, creamed potatoes and corn bread.
Big lots now is different. Not so many bargains. A little short of protein except beans and lentils. Also really nothing to use to pack lunches. Lot of gas causing foods. Problematic in school or an office! I have lived on an incredibly low cost diet. Cheap cuts of meat are good. Can be ground up for sandwiches, etc.
Congrats on recognizing you do NOT need to eat flesh to get protein. Excess protein can cause kidney problems. Lean ground beef contains (by weight) 17% protein calories, the rest of the calories is from FAT. Oatmeal is also 17% protein, but the remainder is comples carbs, healthy oat fibre. Wanna know what oatmeal can do? Look at horses in Scotland.... Babies at the breast get 7% protein, at the highest growth rate in the cycle of life. I LOVE what you do.
They cut off my food stamps completely because I was in n ou of hospital may need new hip But you've given me ideas on bulk buying I never thought of will cost me more up front but in long run tremendous savings. Thanks
Be careful at the Dollar Stores or any store like that. Check their expiration dates - especially on their eggs. I know. I boo boo and didn't check - and it was expired by two days. Thanks for sharing!
You have to check the dates on the food at ANY store! You have to read labels and other information. That has nothing to do with dollar stores. The food at Walmart or Aldi can be expired too.
Exoress Delivers I find GREAT deals on veggies there all the time! Mushrooms, bell peppers, all kinds! And they have a mock Doritos that are always only $2!
marie d I was with my mother-in-law at a luncheon that her club was having. I and another lady thought that the coffee was really good. We asked what brand it was, and , they said it came from Aldi’s!
She sure does know how to save money and shop for her family. Poor people used to eat rice and beans for protein in ancient Mexico and usaully lived an average lifespan of twenty- five years. If she plays her cards right and teaches her kids how to budget they might make it to twenty-five also!
Good job on the budget. I've been trying to cut my grocery bill back but I feel like I am a food shopping addict because I actually enjoy grocery shopping. My next goal is to really try to shop and eat out of the freezer and pantry and only buy fresh veg and fruits.
I love to shop too. I find it very relaxing going to the grocery store. I continually go through what I have In the house each week to make sure im always rotating and using up food. Youll save a bunch just eating random stuff you've accumulated.
@@Lisarovick OH MY! I love to grocery shop too. I eat out a lot (single, retired); but when I cook bulk items I always share with my neighbors. Nowadays, it is common for people to be Vegetarian or to just go meatless for some meals. But when I was young and had kids to raise, (in the dark ages) we tried to have some meat at each meal. Of course now we know that they can have another protein and suffer no ill effects. Knowledge is power.
I spend a lot of money on food as a senior because when I was young a lot of times I didn't have anything to eat! Cooking from scratch saves a LOT of money.
marie d ~ Another good idea is to double recipes that can be frozen. I do meals on wheels for an elderly Aunt. I have a food saver and I freeze cooked meats and things that can be frozen. She’ll throw a potato in the microwave and have one of the meals I sent. ✌️
@@angelforanimals7809 I would never get away with that one....my husband came from a family of 10 and there were never left overs...so he refuses to eat them....and he doesn't eat a lot. Frozen left overs are not acceptable to him....he'd rather eat out! 🙄
marie d ~ But you could still freeze them for yourself and your children. Let him go to the drive through. I’d rather eat a fresh, frozen home cooked meal than a drive through burger. I have a brother-in-law who doesn’t eat leftovers. I talked his wife into freezing them and sending them over to his aging parents.
@@angelforanimals7809 It is only the two of us and impractical for me to eat leftovers while he eats out because we wouldn't be eating TOGETHER! I do cook soups and save leftovers for me when he is working.....the rest goes into meals for our dogs....no salt...nothing goes to waste and it is WAY cheaper to cook for them than feed processed food for dogs that many times are substandard nutritionally..🤣 I can't tell you how often he has eaten food for the dogs not realizing the stewed chicken is for them. I can buy a whole chicken for less than a small bag of kibble or 3 cans, which cost approximately $10. Throw in some carrots and left over vegetables and they have enough to feed 2 big dogs a Cocker and a cat for 3 days.
Man, $2 a day is TOUGH! This looks to be only about 1,000 calories per person per day, but I don't know if I could have done any better. I'm going to check out your other $2 a day videos!
Its more challenging when you just do it for one week like that series was for, but look at my playlist and youll find tons more videos where I show you how we make it a lifestyle:)
I am just tuning into your videos. Sorry if you mentioned this elsewhere. But, in which state do you live? I ask because the price seems much lower than where I live (Northeast) - even for dollar stores.
Spartan I’m in SC. I can actually shop cheaper than this when I buy on sale. I know other areas are more expensive. I have tons more videos on $2 a day on my channel that will give you lots of meal ideas:)
Brown rice is cheap at every store.. Someone who really had to live on $2 a day would not buy lollipops at Trader Joe's. They would have to use their money for real food.
Charlie May not much...all the stores I went to are really close by. Otherwise I wouldn’t of gone to them. My newest $20 Weekly Food Budget video is from 1 store:)
You can get nutrition info here: nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1846/2 A large banana over 9" has about double the nutrition as a small one. I had always been taught that a large one is equal to 2 fruit servings if counting servings.
14 dollars a week is not really hard for one person. I spend about 20 a week for me and my dogs and I don’t budget much. Could go into the fact that I don’t eat much, but still. Not very hard imo
Milk is a 1st food for BABIES. Mammals do not need ANY milk after weaning, especially milk from another species. Cow's milk, was made by a forcibly impregnated cow, for her calf, which instead, is taken away from her, and killed at 3 months or younger if it's a male, or put in solitary confinement, if it's a female, so humans can take that milk, that was meant for those calves. That is absolutely morally wrong, and NOT necessary, for humans to get their Calcium. In fact, it has very negative effects because it was meant for calves, not humans. The countries with the most osteoporosis, are the countries with the most cow's milk drinkers. Calcium, is found in dark green leafy greens, like spinach. Humans are classified as Primates, yet no other Primate, drinks the milk of another species, in order to not be deficient in Calcium. Huge gorillas don't do that, and aren't weak or deficient. The whole Calcium in COW'S milk, for HUMANS, is simply a FABRICATION, to drive perpetual PROFITS. Think about the perpetual profits, if every American, thinks they need it for LIFE, in order to not be "deficient", generation, after generation, for 100s of years.
Regina Greer you don’t need animals for protein. Lentils, beans, oats, flour, fruit and vegetables all have protein:) But you can still eat on $2/day per person with meat. Check out my playlist.
Family foods ... There is no protein. Yes, Beans ... Black, pinto, white, lentils, cheeses different kinds, bulk oatmeal, bulk peanut butter for Sanwhiches, cookies, to stuffed celery, put on crackers serve with tomato soup and banana pudding ..... Oatmeal and or cookies peanut butter cookies. One my famlies favorite was pineapple upside down cake. The way to do it is to buy in bulk. That might mean doing without some months until you properly stock your kitchen. Another aid was.to make out menus and follow them Like I said it is work worth it
Don't listen, these people are reading articles based on new bizarre theories that contradict the 20th century's knowledge of complete proteins versus incomplete proteins. The only complete vegetarian protein is soy protein ( like in tofu, and you have to eat alot of it. ). You can't live off off the protein in potatoes and most other vegetables. You can live off of beans and rice mixed together like they did in ancient Mexico and make it until you're about twenty five- -- twenty seven before you die of malnutrition, but there isn't really any vegetable protein you can eat and live until old age except soy ( like tofu ) and you have to eat alot of it.
Give your kid a little starch and a multi vitamin if you don't have enough money for anything else after giving them meat ( or cheese). Avoid these ancient rice and bean die before your thirty poverty diets like the plague. Meat has high quality complete proteins, B vitamins , minerals , and is good for his blood sugar.

Poor people in ancient Mexico ate nothing but rice and beans for protein and usaully lived to the ripe old age of twenty five. The oldest generation z kids are 21 they'll be really excited when they find out that can live four more years and save money at the same time!
Americans way overindulge on protein. I've been vegetarian since I was 24, and beans and rice make up a big part of my diet. I'm 63 now and have managed to avoid the diabetes and heart disease that runs thru my family....so it's worked for me.
@@stormyweather2807 You may be able to get a way with a rice & bean diet if your diet includes things like tofu, milk, cheese, nuts, and seeds. Most people that are on a rice and bean diet to save money can't afford enough of those other protein foods to be healthy.
For $25 I could have done much better. This haul, I'd starve to death. There isnt a single complete meal to be made on this table except for maybe breakfast if you accept coffee and cream as part of a breakfast. Strange choices...
Beans & rice, plus veggies are a complete meal for me on many a night. I've been vegetarian for 40 years though, and am not a huge eater. I think more people should try eating like this, maybe we could get American's health issues under better control.
Too many stores. TJ's, big lots, dollar store and Costco. Lotsa gas getting there. Beans/lentils and rice is your only complete protein and white rice has practically no nutrition. Brown rice for 50 cents more was worth it. .36 grams of protein per pound of body weight is needed. This menu falls way short. Could have purchased small chicken. Skip the sugar no nutrition at all.

Shael Strata great stuff!!! Thank you for sharing all of these ideas
Wow! I appreciate it... the ideas and effort of the long text kudos to you and thank you!😊😂
Good job everyone
Lucky you US people. Here in Canada, with the best prices on these items, it sums up to over 62$!
Isabelle Drapeau some areas are definitely more expensive
You can also make a good stock out of that chicken carcass. Agreed, a deep freezer is great for stocking up when things go on sale.

Sweet potato, kale and sausage soup

Go to Walmart or most grocery stores early in the morning. Lots of markdowns in meat and veggies
I'm so glad I finally found one of these budget videos with vegan options. These are great ideas, bless!
Jen White most of them are vegan. Meat is expensive
Sprouts is cheaper on Wednesdays on produce and your dried foods are cheaper from the bins, ie. beans, oats, flour, organic candy 🍬- just a suggestion. 😊
Sebrina Lee Payne-Biscardi thank you, I didn't know that :)
What are bins?
Bins are like the bulk section
Know what to shop for where and how, still geography does not provide better options. Overhead and competing with other grocery stores drives prices up. For example small cabbage head 2.99 and higher whereby one shopper got 3/$2, etc.
A. Bannister...In the large containers you scoop from and weigh unpackaged beans/rice.
I’m saving for a house so trying to budget more and live frugal. I don’t live in the US and I’m spending about $120 per week in groceries. My goal is to bring that to $90-$100.

Such an incredible channel. Hope you are all doing great 🙏🏼❤️👍
Try burritos they can be made in many ways
Soup all kinds of homemade styles.
Baked bread, corn bread.
Peanut butter.
Buying bulk is the best way to go.
One of my favorites is Black beans, Cole slaw, creamed potatoes and corn bread.
You can add banana pudding for dessert
Big lots now is different. Not so many bargains. A little short of protein except beans and lentils. Also really nothing to use to pack lunches. Lot of gas causing foods. Problematic in school or an office! I have lived on an incredibly low cost diet. Cheap cuts of meat are good. Can be ground up for sandwiches, etc.
Growing up in the hood we had no choice but the to live this way
make sure to check out my most recent series $20 weekly food budget for 2 people. its got all new recipes and ideas:)
They cut off my food stamps completely because I was in n ou of hospital may need new hip
But you've given me ideas on bulk buying I never thought of will cost me more up front but in long run tremendous savings. Thanks
👍 so healthy, now is the season to push ourselves to be frugal and resourceful.
Sale by dates don't mean the food has expired just the store no longer can sale it as fresh and must reduce the price or toss.
I don't find that Trader Joe's is cheap at all. It's not terribly expensive but its prices are more expensive than Wal-Mart.
Exoress Delivers I agree. You can find better prices than I did. I like TJ for certain items.
Exoress Delivers I find GREAT deals on veggies there all the time! Mushrooms, bell peppers, all kinds!
And they have a mock Doritos that are always only $2!
Imagine willingly shopping at a place like Walmart.
Big Lots also has out of date foods, long out of date. I do not see out of date food at the different dollar stores.
I miss your videos. I hope all is well.
I find big lots more expensive, also Trader Joe's sounds awesome!! Looking forward to all this series

I can buy a whole chicken for less than a small bag of kibble or 3 cans, which cost approximately $10. 14 dollars a week is not really hard for one person. I spend about 20 a week for me and my dogs and I don’t budget much. Could go into the fact that I don’t eat much, but still. Not very hard imo
It is hard for most people. Most people probably eat more than you do.
I don’t see any milk. Where are you getting your calcium?
Mud Puppy greens 🥬

Don't listen, these people are
reading articles based on new
bizarre theories that contradict
the 20th century's knowledge
of complete proteins versus
incomplete proteins. The only
complete vegetarian protein
is soy protein ( like in tofu, and
you have to eat alot of it. ).
You can't live off off the protein
in potatoes and most other
vegetables. You can live off
of beans and rice mixed together
like they did in ancient Mexico
and make it until you're about
twenty five- -- twenty seven
before you die of malnutrition,
but there isn't really any
vegetable protein you can eat
and live until old age except
soy ( like tofu ) and you have
