Thank you for doing a report about this disaster. I’ve been reading all the news articles but it is very hard to see what is going on in their videos. They are very one dimensional. With your various views of the mountain and the slide area, it allows us to gather the magnitude of the catastrophe.
New Guinea really is a nightmare scenario for landslides. Frequent earthquakes, exceedingly steep terrain, highly populated valleys, heavy rainfall, deforestation, and minimal infrastructure to bring relief.
@@1.4142 How... how does that relate? Also the highlands of New Guinea are notably _low_ in tropical diseases due to the chilly nights which prevent most from spreading.
Then add in the Tribal Warfare & creepy opportunistic thieves that are presently causing threats of highjacking supplies( the thieves only (Not the tribes!! ) going on half way up the trail. Volunteers are trying to bring in supplies up in elevation to where they are trying to send people to get out of the slides. Military personnel are escorting but even they can only do so much with the treacherous terrain. It's tragic.
Sorry I'm posting this twice. The BBC reported that recently there has been tribal conflict in the area. This has caused many people to flee their homes and go to the slide area to seek refuge. My deepest sympathy to those that have lost their lives.
I worked for the PNG Geological Survey for 3 years, 1980-1983, as an engineering geologist. Landslides are a major factor in the geomorphological evolution of the New Guinea highlands. In my experience, slope failures virtually always involves elevated pore-water pressures. How they get to be elevated is obviously another question, and many of the features you mention can contribute.

@@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking Whenever there is water in a rock or soil structure, it makes it weaker. People talk about "lubrication", but that's not really it. Gravity brings blocks and particles together, making it hard to move them apart. Think of a metal plate on a surface: you can slide it easily, but with a heavy weight on it, much harder. If, however, the plate and the weight were submerged, the water pressure is working against that force between the plate and surface, making it easier to slide. So, a mountainside is basically held together by its weight; introduce a lot of water, and the blocks and particles are no longer gripping each other as tightly, the water is trying to push them apart. However, the force tending to try to pull the whole mass downhill is the same. At some critical point, as the water pressure rises, disturbance overcomes resistance, and it fails.
Need to see a LIDAR image of the area. After the Oso, Washington slide, LIDAR showed series of similar events and some pending ones along the same ridge.

Oh, this is sad. Rest in peace, people. Ona. Different note… I got to watch a small mudslide occur because I live on a hill at the top and the neighbor across the way decided to completely clear his vegetation when he moved in. I asked the dude what he was planted and he showed me the seeds. So I asked if they would be grown before the rains and he said it would be fine. It was, in fact, not fine. Unless his plan was to plant along the road and the ditches and other peoples yards because after rain #3, his yard flowed away.
Palm Oil Production is causing massive deforestation in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. . Landslides will become more common. You need trees to hold the soil. The area is mainly farming and most of the area has been cleared of trees.
There's no palm oil production anywhere near this area, flat land is always chosen for the palm plantations. They are highly unlikely to ever be connected with landslides.
Fair point, however wrong area. Palm oil is typically done in flat lowland rainforest areas with rich volcanic soil where the palms grow best. So, some of the lowlands of New Guinea are being deforested a bit, and especially in the Bismarck archipelago. But in highland areas like this, its just going to be subsistence agriculture.
Thank you for not outright blaming the victims. I've been disgusted by the hundreds of comments on other vids..."they can only blame themselves." "Don't deforest - idiots!" Wow. A wildfire could have caused the vegetation destruction. A vehicle fire, that ran up hill. There's no evidence of terracing for farming, so I'm gonna say "slash and burn" is extremely unlikely. Nobody farms steep slopes. There's something else going on here. People need to wait and find out.
A lot of parallels to the Frank landslide disaster in Canada over 100 years ago. A massive landslide in the dead of the night killing many people asleep in their homes without warning. Very tragic.
@@Emeral-e1i: Well, I'm aware that "logging" specifically refers to using the trees for wood, but I'm referring to how forests are being cleared for all kinds of purposes in general, including mining as well (and others, like slash-and-burn agriculture). If humans hadn't cleared it, that area would have been covered with forest holding the ground together.
@@hoon_sol no , it's a forested area there's no gardening or slash and burn, there, even if there was gardening activities traditional gardening rules are well observed, this is a mountain of forest where no gardening is done, only hunters visit randomly and rarely, quiet an undisturbed pristine area. Only Mother earth knows why she did what she did.
@@Emeral-e1i: From the imagery I looked at that region looked totally bare, and there seemed to have been tons of deforestation there and in surrounding areas relative to the actual forested areas of PNG. The idea that the area was "undisturbed" and "pristine" is absolutely laughable, that doesn't seem to be even remotely true.

That is one of the most special and uniquely diverse natural areas on the Planet. It would be a devastating loss if the peoples there hack down the Old Growth ecosystems and cause increasing desertification, as has happened in so many other areas of the world. Much of that Island is still unexplored nor documented for the beautiful and vulnerable ancient species.
Very helpful and understandable graphics of this event. Thank you. Looking around at the surrounding landscape however, reveals that these landslides are common in this area, with other blown-out slides very near-by. Looks like we have a modern-day Pompei, but instead of rich people being buried, this is all poor people.
The landslide was unexpected, there wasn't heavy rain fall through out the highlands provinces. I just had a conversation with the locals today. More than a thousand bodies still buried.

00:41 How can no one be questioning the deathtoll numbers? There are less than half a dozen structures in the path, maybe up to 12 if some are so small they can't be distinguished from trees. There is absolutely no way the number of dead is more than 50 unless there was some 3am concert going on in that exact spot.
I strongly suspect that the landslide had no one cause, but was the result of a number of factors. Whilst there may not be ,any caves and cave systems in the region, the limestone would still have been vulnerable to rain fall. especially acidic rainfall... which would have been the result of the gases released from the smoke of the slash and burn areas. On top of that, with an El Nino event just passed and volcanic activity adding to the amount acidic rain, and the hillside stripped of protecting vegetation, Perhaps the hillside was simply a ticking geological timebomb. Had the hillside been under cultivation at any time? It's true plant roots bind everything together, but they can also break rock up, too. And once the plant cover has been cleared, for whatever reason, there's nothing to keep loose rock from shifting. My thoughts keep going back to the Aberfan disaster. True enough, the spoil heap slide was caused by a spoil tip that had been heaped too high, and had slopes at too steep an angle, and were thus unstable. However, what triggered the collapse was water, specifically a lot of rain, that mobilised the slopes and sent them sliding down on the village. If the hillside had become unstable, due to accelerated weathering and erosion, and lost its stabilising layer of plant cover, even a modest amount of water could have finished the job. One way or another, Nature has been giving us as a species a hard nudge to remind us of what it is capable of. Whilst it was in no way as major as the PNG landslide, there was one here in the UK that sadly claimed a young life. Excessive rainfall has been claimed the culprit in this case, but it is something we need to keep in mind. This is climate change at ground level- it isn't just big things like hurricanes, monsoons, and droughts that are being affected, little local events are too, and that can be just as deadly and dangerous as the big ones.

It's definitely from deforestation. Charcoal production, farmland, I'm not as smart as you but looking at satellite timelapses tells the story pretty clearly. I've also seen in detail what it looks like in the jungle on the ground from Les Stroud. The entire island has seen most of it's largest trees cut down.
Not just that, the mountain had several landslides already. It is unstable since a long time, propably by the constant earthquake action in the area and the constant rainfalls.
This is New Guinea. It is geologicalky unstable, whether this time or in future, landslides in mountains do occur, unfortunately, this has claimed hundreds of lives, advise to highlands communities to select less risky areas of settlement is most important.
Of course it was deforestation causing destabilization of denuded soils. We see this everywhere,, even where resources are available for mitigation (see aftermaths of massive forest fires in the Jemez Mountains above Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA.) Tragically the updated estimated death toll now is ~4000.

what is the name of the city that got hit by the landslide? on the map it just looks like rural area like nobody (or not many) people would even live there...not thousands of people living in that area? (i saw 1 single house, near the road)...what's the town/city ?
RIP to all of those who are no longer with us. The cause will have likely been a combination of the recent quake further destabilising the ground and underlying rock units after the vegetation reduction had also caused damage to the top soil. If heavy rainfall was also involved this would further increase risk due to the non binded soils.

No, you forgot that this region was covered in dense jungle for millions of years and then recently they chopped all the trees down; that creates landslides.

In 2017 Freetown in Sierra Leone experienced a similar catastrophe, and it was related to deforestation, soil erosion and heavy rainfall. Around 1,140 people died in that disaster, most of whom were living on the hillside in homes that didn’t have planning permission.
Extremely sad, but is this due to poor land management or advice? Very high rainfall and steep topography require vegetation for stability. I hope the Australian govt can get in quick to help
Just a suggestion, rather than showing an "American football field", which means something to people from ONE country, show a football/soccer field, which means something to people from almost every country on Earth. I have no idea how big an American football field is. I know it's measured in wierd US units like "yards", which are smaller than metres.
The channel and most of its viewers are in said one country, though... and soccer means little-to-nothing to most of those people. It's a distant fifth among professional sports in the U.S. with around a quarter of the annual revenue of ice hockey. Incidentally, the NFL (American football) is the highest-revenue sports league, not just in the U.S., but anywhere. MLB (baseball) is #2. NBA (basketball) is #3. "1250 m long, and 30 wide at its widest, destroying a total of 25000 square metres" would be incredibly helpful, for example.

Mostly just people who actually played soccer know or care much about it in the U.S., while virtually everyone in the U.S. is familiar with American football fields, even if they don't personally care much about football. The video did actually state the length of the landslide as 750 meters, then provided the football field example just to add perspective. It also showed a graphic of the actual shape of the landslide area, which, obviously, is not square or of uniform width. If you want an idea of the width in any given spot, it's easy enough to compare the known 750-meter length to the width in a given area to estimate how wide it was there. As far as comparison to objects, saying that this is unhelpful is objectively false and saying it has "racial bias" just makes you sound ridiculous. The average person (who isn't an engineer, scientist, etc.) does not deal with areas like 100,000 square meters on a regular basis and has little mental concept of how large that is (and this problem gets larger as the numbers increase to even less common orders of magnitude.) Providing comparisons to things that average people actually do have a reasonable idea of how big they are helps to provide perspective when dealing with orders of magnitude that people don't normally deal with on a day-to-day basis. This has nothing to do with which units of measure one may normally use, but rather just how humans think in general. That looks like very sparsely populated area. The satellite photo only shows 3-4 buildings affected. I fail to see any way the death toll could be higher than a dozen. A town of 6,000 would be much more visible on satellite, even 600 would have a visible footprint.
I've been pushing this hard, and am getting nowhere. The number of deaths is likely less than 30 to 50, and that's being generous. I cannot believe how this story has gained traction and that no one official is questioning the numbers based on the satellite imagery.

A possible explanation for disparity in the number of people that are unaccounted for may be the recent wars between tribes in the area. This has caused an unknown number of people to flee their home territories and seek refuge in area of the landslide. The source of this information is the BBC.

The locals watch the news reports and know immediately it's garbage and not even the correct location. Family starts calling from other states thinking everyone is dead and we've reverted to the Stone Age. "No, we lost power for 3 hours and a small part of the neighboring town is a mess, but everyone's fine. Go back to sleep, I need to be up early for work."

These are the coordinates of the landslide: -5.378534, 143.364591 Look up the before and after satellite images on a mapping program. There were fewer than 5 homes in the path. The "official" numbers are complete B.S. It is a tragedy that anyone died, but the number of deaths is likely less than 50. Please dig a little more on this.

Thank you for doing a report about this disaster. I’ve been reading all the news articles but it is very hard to see what is going on in their videos. They are very one dimensional. With your various views of the mountain and the slide area, it allows us to gather the magnitude of the catastrophe.
It also allows us to realize the official numbers are bull. Count the number of structures you can see in the satellite image.
New Guinea really is a nightmare scenario for landslides. Frequent earthquakes, exceedingly steep terrain, highly populated valleys, heavy rainfall, deforestation, and minimal infrastructure to bring relief.
@@1.4142 How... how does that relate? Also the highlands of New Guinea are notably _low_ in tropical diseases due to the chilly nights which prevent most from spreading.
Then add in the Tribal Warfare & creepy opportunistic thieves that are presently causing threats of highjacking supplies( the thieves only (Not the tribes!! ) going on half way up the trail. Volunteers are trying to bring in supplies up in elevation to where they are trying to send people to get out of the slides. Military personnel are escorting but even they can only do so much with the treacherous terrain. It's tragic.

Sorry I'm posting this twice. The BBC reported that recently there has been tribal conflict in the area. This has caused many people to flee their homes and go to the slide area to seek refuge. My deepest sympathy to those that have lost their lives.
No that's not true, the tribal fight occurred in a totally different location, in another district, this happened in another location/district.
I worked for the PNG Geological Survey for 3 years, 1980-1983, as an engineering geologist. Landslides are a major factor in the geomorphological evolution of the New Guinea highlands.
In my experience, slope failures virtually always involves elevated pore-water pressures. How they get to be elevated is obviously another question, and many of the features you mention can contribute.

@@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking Whenever there is water in a rock or soil structure, it makes it weaker. People talk about "lubrication", but that's not really it. Gravity brings blocks and particles together, making it hard to move them apart. Think of a metal plate on a surface: you can slide it easily, but with a heavy weight on it, much harder. If, however, the plate and the weight were submerged, the water pressure is working against that force between the plate and surface, making it easier to slide.
So, a mountainside is basically held together by its weight; introduce a lot of water, and the blocks and particles are no longer gripping each other as tightly, the water is trying to push them apart. However, the force tending to try to pull the whole mass downhill is the same. At some critical point, as the water pressure rises, disturbance overcomes resistance, and it fails.
Need to see a LIDAR image of the area. After the Oso, Washington slide, LIDAR showed series of similar events and some pending ones along the same ridge.
Bingo! Also, in general, we need to up our game for landslide detection. I wonder how expensive or feasible it is? Anyone know?

My best guess is the slow slide - maybe started with the recent shakes, maybe accelerated by them. And possibly affected by seasonal rainfall.
in a region that gets lots and lots of rainfall, subsidence occurs fairly often. It really sucks that so many lived near that spot.

Ona. Different note… I got to watch a small mudslide occur because I live on a hill at the top and the neighbor across the way decided to completely clear his vegetation when he moved in. I asked the dude what he was planted and he showed me the seeds. So I asked if they would be grown before the rains and he said it would be fine. It was, in fact, not fine. Unless his plan was to plant along the road and the ditches and other peoples yards because after rain #3, his yard flowed away.

Palm Oil Production is causing massive deforestation in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. . Landslides will become more common. You need trees to hold the soil. The area is mainly farming and most of the area has been cleared of trees.
There's no palm oil production anywhere near this area, flat land is always chosen for the palm plantations. They are highly unlikely to ever be connected with landslides.
Fair point, however wrong area. Palm oil is typically done in flat lowland rainforest areas with rich volcanic soil where the palms grow best. So, some of the lowlands of New Guinea are being deforested a bit, and especially in the Bismarck archipelago. But in highland areas like this, its just going to be subsistence agriculture.

Well, I'm aware that "logging" specifically refers to using the trees for wood, but I'm referring to how forests are being cleared for all kinds of purposes in general, including mining as well (and others, like slash-and-burn agriculture). If humans hadn't cleared it, that area would have been covered with forest holding the ground together.

That is one of the most special and uniquely diverse natural areas on the Planet. It would be a devastating loss if the peoples there hack down the Old Growth ecosystems and cause increasing desertification, as has happened in so many other areas of the world. Much of that Island is still unexplored nor documented for the beautiful and vulnerable ancient species.
Very helpful and understandable graphics of this event. Thank you. Looking around at the surrounding landscape however, reveals that these landslides are common in this area, with other blown-out slides very near-by. Looks like we have a modern-day Pompei, but instead of rich people being buried, this is all poor people.

The landslide was unexpected, there wasn't heavy rain fall through out the highlands provinces. I just had a conversation with the locals today.

00:41 How can no one be questioning the deathtoll numbers? There are less than half a dozen structures in the path, maybe up to 12 if some are so small they can't be distinguished from trees. There is absolutely no way the number of dead is more than 50 unless there was some 3am concert going on in that exact spot.
I strongly suspect that the landslide had no one cause, but was the result of a number of factors. Whilst there may not be ,any caves and cave systems in the region, the limestone would still have been vulnerable to rain fall. especially acidic rainfall... which would have been the result of the gases released from the smoke of the slash and burn areas. On top of that, with an El Nino event just passed and volcanic activity adding to the amount acidic rain, and the hillside stripped of protecting vegetation, Perhaps the hillside was simply a ticking geological timebomb.
Had the hillside been under cultivation at any time? It's true plant roots bind everything together, but they can also break rock up, too. And once the plant cover has been cleared, for whatever reason, there's nothing to keep loose rock from shifting.
My thoughts keep going back to the Aberfan disaster. True enough, the spoil heap slide was caused by a spoil tip that had been heaped too high, and had slopes at too steep an angle, and were thus unstable. However, what triggered the collapse was water, specifically a lot of rain, that mobilised the slopes and sent them sliding down on the village. If the hillside had become unstable, due to accelerated weathering and erosion, and lost its stabilising layer of plant cover, even a modest amount of water could have finished the job.
One way or another, Nature has been giving us as a species a hard nudge to remind us of what it is capable of. Whilst it was in no way as major as the PNG landslide, there was one here in the UK that sadly claimed a young life. Excessive rainfall has been claimed the culprit in this case, but it is something we need to keep in mind. This is climate change at ground level- it isn't just big things like hurricanes, monsoons, and droughts that are being affected, little local events are too, and that can be just as deadly and dangerous as the big ones.

It's definitely from deforestation. Charcoal production, farmland, I'm not as smart as you but looking at satellite timelapses tells the story pretty clearly. I've also seen in detail what it looks like in the jungle on the ground from Les Stroud. The entire island has seen most of it's largest trees cut down.
Not just that, the mountain had several landslides already. It is unstable since a long time, propably by the constant earthquake action in the area and the constant rainfalls.

The cause will have likely been a combination of the recent quake further destabilising the ground and underlying rock units after the vegetation reduction had also caused damage to the top soil. If heavy rainfall was also involved this would further increase risk due to the non binded soils.

In 2017 Freetown in Sierra Leone experienced a similar catastrophe, and it was related to deforestation, soil erosion and heavy rainfall. Around 1,140 people died in that disaster, most of whom were living on the hillside in homes that didn’t have planning permission.

Just a suggestion, rather than showing an "American football field", which means something to people from ONE country, show a football/soccer field, which means something to people from almost every country on Earth. I have no idea how big an American football field is. I know it's measured in wierd US units like "yards", which are smaller than metres.
The channel and most of its viewers are in said one country, though... and soccer means little-to-nothing to most of those people. It's a distant fifth among professional sports in the U.S. with around a quarter of the annual revenue of ice hockey.
Incidentally, the NFL (American football) is the highest-revenue sports league, not just in the U.S., but anywhere. MLB (baseball) is #2. NBA (basketball) is #3. The highest-revenue soccer league is the English Premier League at #4, followed closely by the NHL (ice hockey) at #5.

Even more problematically, though, unlike an American football field, there is not a set standard size for a soccer pitch. I did live in the USA, and there are more soccer fields in San Diego at least than "football fields" (is Qualcomm Stadium one? I saw baseball there).
The more important point is that measuring things in 747s, football fields or elephants is incredibly unhelpful, has racial bias, enormous errors and does not really help.

Mostly just people who actually played soccer know or care much about it in the U.S., while virtually everyone in the U.S. is familiar with American football fields, even if they don't personally care much about football.
The video did actually state the length of the landslide as 750 meters, then provided the football field example just to add perspective. It also showed a graphic of the actual shape of the landslide area, which, obviously, is not square or of uniform width. If you want an idea of the width in any given spot, it's easy enough to compare the known 750-meter length to the width in a given area to estimate how wide it was there.
As far as comparison to objects, saying that this is unhelpful is objectively false and saying it has "racial bias" just makes you sound ridiculous. The average person (who isn't an engineer, scientist, etc.) does not deal with areas like 100,000 square meters on a regular basis and has little mental concept of how large that is (and this problem gets larger as the numbers increase to even less common orders of magnitude.) Providing comparisons to things that average people actually do have a reasonable idea of how big they are helps to provide perspective when dealing with orders of magnitude that people don't normally deal with on a day-to-day basis. This has nothing to do with which units of measure one may normally use, but rather just how humans think in general. Even your comprehension of your vision works this way without even consciously thinking about it, automatically comparing things of sizes you know about to determine distance to and/or size of other things within your field of view.

That looks like very sparsely populated area. The satellite photo only shows 3-4 buildings affected.
I fail to see any way the death toll could be higher than a dozen. A town of 6,000 would be much more visible on satellite, even 600 would have a visible footprint.
I've been pushing this hard, and am getting nowhere. The number of deaths is likely less than 30 to 50, and that's being generous. I cannot believe how this story has gained traction and that no one official is questioning the numbers based on the satellite imagery.

A possible explanation for disparity in the number of people that are unaccounted for may be the recent wars between tribes in the area. This has caused an unknown number of people to flee their home territories and seek refuge in area of the landslide. The source of this information is the BBC.

The locals watch the news reports and know immediately it's garbage and not even the correct location. Family starts calling from other states thinking everyone is dead and we've reverted to the Stone Age.

The "official" numbers are complete B.S. It is a tragedy that anyone died, but the number of deaths is likely less than 50. Please dig a little more on this.
