These planes are surprisingly smooth rides. When I traveled in one, it was honestly one of the most comfortable flights I’d ever been on. Not what I expected from a propeller driven plane, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Watching this reminds me of the numerous trips to took from Fairbanks to Deadhorse on the Q400. Alaska 2817 was the flight. They just pulled out of Alaska a couple weeks ago.
One of those plane was stolen and crash on August 10, 2018. I love Q400s, especially I love those rumbling sounds of mighty PW150A turboprop sounds on taxi!
+LWJCarroll Thanks Laurie! I love flying over the mountains right after a snow storm. The snow-capped peaks were beautiful and the air was very smooth that day.
I'm a big fan of turboprop airliners! It makes me very sad that most regional airlines are phasing them out, and switching to pure jet aircraft. I wish that the mainliners like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A-320 were turboprop instead of pure jet. Some say that driving a vehicle with a manual transmission, "Stickshift", is "Real Driving". I say that flying in a propeller driven airliner is "Real Flying"! I personally love the sound that the props make, the "box fan" sound in high idle and taxiing, and the "bumblebee" sound in takeoff and in flght! "Bumblebee Sound" is my name for the bass hum and vibration, heard inside the cabin of a turboprop airliner. It's true, most turboprop airliners are a quite noisy, but the quietest turboprop I ever flew on was the ATR-42, back in 1992 with American Eagle. My girlfriend has given the ATR the nickname, "The Whisperprop". It's my understanding that the majority of the public doesn't like the turboprops, one reason being because many of them are noisy. To get the public to better accept the turboprops, thicker cabin insulation would be one solution to reduce the noise. Also, it's my understanding that the majority of the public is convinced that the turboprop engine is a turbocharged piston driven propeller engine, when in fact, it's actually a jet engine with a propeller attatched. If you listen to the engine fire up, and run in low idle, you can hear the whine of the jet engine. The word "Turboprop" actually refers to the fact that it's a turbine powered engine, and not a piston engine. To help educate the public that the turboprop engine is indeed a jet propeller engine, they could paint in big letters, "PROP JET" on the sides of the engine cowels.
Jacky Claiborne Agreed and is definitely sad turboprops are becoming more and more rare. They are the only thing adding slight variety to a world of twin fan jets. The ATR 42 is an awesome plane, although haven’t flown on one since the 90s on once Continental Express.
My longtime girlfriend likes to call the ATR 42 the "Whisperprop"! She and I flew on one once with American Eagle. The ATR appeared to have thicker cabin insulation, which muffled the "Bumblebee" sound, produced by the props during takeoff and inflight. @@LoveJT8D
Agreed! You’re basically still flying a ‘jet’. Anywhere a turboprop can be added in the trip makes things more interesting. Not much variety otherwise.
+LoveJT8D How many charter airlines have you been on? ive been on two in my life time ive been on non charter airlines more then charter airlines also MMH Looks like a very small airport like the one we have in western alberta NOT YYC Calgary internatanal airport is the biggest in alberta spring bank airport is one of the smallest onley for small cessnas and Pipper Air craft anyway Awsome video As I may have told you
The Q400 is a nice plane, BUT, it kind of sucks for super tall people. If my friend who is an Amazonian girl and I fly anywhere on one, we HAVE to sit in the first row because otherwise she is REALLY uncomfortable. I have flown these numerous times in between Seattle and Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, Boise, Jackson and Bozeman on ski trips.
DylBeen the Plotagonist and randomee 240 Porter in Canada uses them. Btw, I didn’t know Horizon retired them. Could have sworn I saw a few recently unless it was really recent. US Airways Express did offload their Q300s recently.
LoveJT8D apparently, according to the Wikipedia page about Horizon, they haven’t retired all of them, in fact they make up most of the fleet(along with Embraer EMB-175’s) and 2 orders were recently placed for new ones
Epic Voice Brony Not a stupid question. I believe there were roughly 15 - 20 of us. Most wanted to sit in front but the FAs had some people move toward the back for weight/balancing.
I feel the opposite way. If the plane is going to crash I think being sliced to ribbons might be a more merciful way to go than to plunge to the ground at the speed of sound knowing that I won't survive anyhow. But all the prop has to do is separate from the aircraft and it will slice through the fuselage like a can opener. If that were to happen nobody on the plane would survive. People would get chopped up, they would get sucked out of the plane and the ones who remained on board would probably asphyxiate before crash landing and exploding into flames. I should mention that I enjoy flying. I only feel a bit nervous during takeoff and landing. I've flown on these Dash 8's a few times now. Invariably I always seem to sit right next to the propeller. I like watching the landing gear deploy and retract.

But can it do barrel rolls?
nice video really like the sleek look of this powerful dhc 8-400 turbo prop! rob
rob balboni Thanks Rob! Yes they are definitely sleek and fairly quiet in the cabin. An overall great passenger experience.
Watching this reminds me of the numerous trips to took from Fairbanks to Deadhorse on the Q400. Alaska 2817 was the flight. They just pulled out of Alaska a couple weeks ago.
Michael Kerby Oh no, that's sad. That would be beautiful to fly up there on the Q400. Although Ravn, still flies the Q100 around.
That's some serious terrain right after takeoff... better watch that crosswind!
One of those plane was stolen and crash on August 10, 2018. I love Q400s, especially I love those rumbling sounds of mighty PW150A turboprop sounds on taxi!
Great job filming this! I hope that Horizon keeps their Q400s, because United Express is getting rid of theirs.
+David Halligan Thanks! It's a shame that United Express is phasing out their Q400's. Turboprops make flying a little more interesting :)
I'm 4 years late, but we have a lot here in Canada. Crazy how only Alaska operates it in the US in terms of major airlines.
A very scenic flight to do especially on such a nice day...Rgds...Laurie
+LWJCarroll Thanks Laurie! I love flying over the mountains right after a snow storm. The snow-capped peaks were beautiful and the air was very smooth that day.
Such a beauty!
cmetube Absolutely! One of the cooler looking turboprops.

Great video!!! Love the dash, sad to see them all going away. hopefully horizon will hang on the to theirs.
As far as I know, they'll be with Horizon a while.
Ravn Alaska doesn't seem to be letting any of theirs go
Alaska isn't letting them go anytime soon and they're everywhere here in Canada
"Jets are better than propeller ones" is a deeply rooted misconception. I always enjoy flying in a turboprop more than in a 320 or 737.
Agreed! You’re basically still flying a ‘jet’. Anywhere a turboprop can be added in the trip makes things more interesting. Not much variety otherwise.
@@LoveJT8D Yes, technically turboprop engine is a "better" version of turbofan in the sense of higher bypass ratio.
Nice LoveJT8D ! I Love this one!
+PlaneSpotterCalgary YYC Thanks! Glad you enjoyed.
LoveJT8D thanks men oh and when was this? it looked like the same wether where I live In Canada!
PlaneSpotterCalgary YYC This was around the end of March 2015 I believe.
LoveJT8D Oh
+LoveJT8D How many charter airlines have you been on? ive been on two in my life time ive been on non charter airlines more then charter airlines also MMH Looks like a very small airport like the one we have in western alberta NOT YYC Calgary internatanal airport is the biggest in alberta spring bank airport is one of the smallest onley for small cessnas and Pipper Air craft anyway Awsome video As I may have told you
Seattle plane hijacker brought me here
Where you heading too?
This flight was from Mammoth Lakes, Ca to LAX. Pretty short flight but beautiful scenery. Thanks for watching!
i've been on this type of plane before
Adrien Diaz Awesome! Did you enjoy your flight?
Me to my name is Alaska Airlines Horizon Air
I flew one of these last week from pdx to seatac good plane uncomfortable seats.
joe n Agreed that the seats were a little thin. Definitely an exciting aircraft to fly.
I'm from Seattle :)
Tiffany Marlow Awesome! Have you flown on one of these planes too?
The Q400 is a nice plane, BUT, it kind of sucks for super tall people. Ben Schaeffer Granted it’s a little tight for us tall folk (can definitely relate) but still more ergonomically comfortable than a crj-200.
Beautiful airplane
B Ca Absolutely!
Do you think this plane can do a backflip?
lol
Actualy this plane its not made to do back flips!!!! Who ever dit it its a bad ass!!!
@@mr305monje5 Shows how capable the aircraft is though. Probably put a lot of strain on the frame though.
I like these aeroplanes because they do aerobatics
+LoveJT8D how did you get your videos copyrighted I'm wondering cause I would like to get my own videos copyrighted
Very good
I want so bad to finish up my training and fly
Good luck on your flying journey. Are you leaning toward flying with the airlines?
LoveJT8D anything that comes along but yes a regional would make my life
Nice
What was the top altitude?
tjperez69 Not sure exactly but I'm thinking around 23K.
15
Too bad United Express and Alaska Horizon retired all of these, AeroMar in Mexico is the only airline I know of that still uses these
DylBeen the Plotagonist and randomee 240 Porter in Canada uses them. Btw, I didn’t know Horizon retired them. Could have sworn I saw a few recently unless it was really recent. US Airways Express did offload their Q300s recently.

DylBeen the Plotagonist and randomee 240 im flying on one in a couple of days... From spokane WA. To sacramento CA.
So, stupid question: were you the ONLY passenger on this flight?
Epic Voice Brony Not a stupid question. I believe there were roughly 15 - 20 of us. Most wanted to sit in front but the FAs had some people move toward the back for weight/balancing.
Empty flight??
Brandon Binder No, I'd say about 15 people
Which airport is MMH? Mammoth??
Correct, it is Mammoth Yosemite Airport, in Mammoth Lakes, CA.
Sexy engine noise
That Alaskan Kid Nothing like the sound of a turboprop. They add nice variety in today’s sea of twin jets.
Such a shame they knifed this service.... now we're stuck with Skywest CRJs into MMH
Beck Ramsey Yeah it’s such a beautiful flight coming in over the mountains in a turboprop. JSX also runs their E-135s seasonally into MMH.
At 6:40 did anyone see that US Airways. I thought that they weren't existing anymore
Awesome American Trains This video was shot in 2016 so there may have still been some US birds flying around at that time.
Oh, i thought they didn't exist, but i was wrong
It looks like not too many people onboard this flight.
Yes, probably about 30% full.
I'm just a broken guy...
Ziggmanster oh no
🤣🤣🤣
Why just pictures of engine?
Not much to see on the inside, but it was excellent to film the scenery of the Sierra Nevada Mountains!
I don't think I would like to be sitting anywhere near those props...for obvious reasons.
I feel the opposite way. If the plane is going to crash I think being sliced to ribbons might be a more merciful way to go than to plunge to the ground at the speed of sound knowing that I won't survive anyhow. Actually, you would have most likley felt more pain if you would have got chopped up by the proppelers, than if you went straight into the ground.
sunking2001 me either
Then I flew to seatac to stl way better plan 737 900. Lol
joe n I’m sure the 739 was a little more comfortable on the long haul ;)
Seat number
vasken karagozian I believe this was 5A
Thanks
Who ever fly on thissm.f. its risking their life for reallll i wouldn't!!!!
The Q400's are actually quite nice to fly on for short hops. Overall I think they've had a pretty good track record.
At 6:40 did anyone see that US Airways. I thought that they weren't existing anymore
Awesome American Trains I guess not all of them were painted in American livery yet
