I've been doing this song for decades. I always wondered who actually wrote it- but its like "House of the Rising Sun" or "Stack-o-lee"- one of those old folk songs that has been passed down and been around forever. There are many pages written about the song online, but, I originally learned the lyrics off an old Bobby Bland LP way back, but later heard and liked the Louis Armstrong version better [which is closer to what I do]- but I don't even sing what he sang... the lyrics i sing have somehow evolved/devolved over the years of my doing it; but there are many versions of the lyrics...
Damn. God-fucking-damn, that was awesome.
This is one of the only videos on you tube that comes close to capturing actually being in New Orleans
This is what excellence sounds like...
that is a HUGE compliment- thank you
love your hat, your attitude, your hair and most of all your jazz soul

The letter "e" in Doug's surname is important when searching YTube for other tunes of his.. If you forget the "e" YT will give you Doug Duffy, world Motocross champion.

I so love this song, the first time I ever hear it was the Cab Calloway version from an old Betty Boop cartoon. I've been collecting versions ever since. This one was just so pretty and perfect.
And the crowd cried for more, more!!
Superb!
Love his version of this song and House of the Rising Sun, none better, playing and the voice. Truly New Orleans sound. You are right aknowneemus, why isnt he better known? I do have the album this is on. wearing it out.
How does this not get more views than that ?
great version of a classic song..........a lifelong favorite
This was once 1 of my all time favorites. Till it was my turn to visit the infirmary. So it has lost some of its luster for me. Still you play it so well. Thank you for the post.
Count me in Doug, I always play you when I'm on FB.
Damn Doug that is smooth--soulful.
thanks, buddy!

@WeLoveMarley - "Sweet Man" in the vernacular of the time meant pimp. So it wasn't so much of a love affair as a business arrangement. I've been trying to collect all the copies of this song that I can find, thanks DougDuffey for posting this one, I had no clue about it.
Sweet!
dude, awesome version. Bloody wish I could play something more jazzy than the violin!
You rock! ehmm... you jazz :-D
Amazing!
amazing version!!
thank you, Lety!
Growing up in Monroe, La I always knew Doug Duffey was an excellent songwriter/singer that had quite a following. Last I heard he was in Europe. BUT being a home-town girl how could I miss the fact Duffey played piano so well (?!) [He always HIRED the piano player]? aah...he was giving back
WOW! THAT'S COOL JAZZ!!!
1991 good year. great job! Hope you are still kickin out the tunes, somewhere. heard you were in Switzerland alps
Late reply- yeah I live between Louisiana and Switzerland.
the earliest version i've got of this is Cisco Houston somewhere back in the 40s. great song. dark, gritty, and strangely life-affirming. and as with all good old folk, it has about a million different versions of the lyrics (only a slight exaggeration!)
WOAH!
that was really awesome! I wish i could play like you, all i can play is the white stripes version :p hahah
Super buenooo
Goooooood

Happy New Year Doug
This song is so classic
So infamous
No one knows its author
He or she died broke....idk but, I'd bet
But look at us now
Attracted
Maybe enticed
At scripts jotted years before us all
Music is best served from the soul
The author, as far as I know, is Joe Primrose, 1929, but could be from another composer.
I went down to st James infirmary. I saw my baby there. she was dressed out on a long white table. so sweet so cold so fair. let her go let her go god bless her. wherever she may be. she will search this whole world over. but shell never.
find another sweet man
like me
Personally, i think it is made up from several old Irish/English folk songs. I did a lot of research about the song, 10+ years back. But, I just put my own version together.
Doug Duffey
Hey Doug i miss you. Haven’t spoke in a bit.
Im working at NASA michoud on a rocket. I bought a korg Krome to get my chops back.
Any time you are in NoLa let me know so i can you see you play. Maybe you can give me tips on my left hand with the keys.
Wishing you the best
-Daniel
Good
Folks, I'm goin' down to St. James Infirmary,
See my baby there;
She's stretched out on a long, white table,
She's so sweet, so cold, so fair.
Let her go, let her go, God bless her,
Wherever she may be,
She will search this wide world over,
But she'll never find another sweet man like me.
Now, when I die, bury me in my straight-leg britches,
Put on a box-back coat and a stetson hat,
Put a twenty-dollar gold piece on my watch chain,
So you can let all the boys know I died standing pat
#Good
good
Oh my god. You make the piano sound so smooth and nice. It's such easy listening.
I thought that Cab Calloway was the original composer, but I guess I'll have to look into it more.
there is NO original composer; it's a folk song, handed down for generations, changed to fit whatever times. I learned the 'lyrics' [which i kind added to myself] off a Louis Armstrong record waaaaaay back in the day... Thank you.
this is the best version on youtube of st james infirmary.... Well done!
But do you have the sheetmusic of your version? I REALLY want to play it like you...
I was a big fan of Jamil Shariff's rendition at Maison Bourbon on Bourbon Street
god !! ^^*
EXCELENTE!!! ... ALGUIEN HABLO DE SONIDOS SORDOS? SORDO ES EL QUE OPINO
This song was based on the English song "St. James' Infirmary", (a 17th century hospital). The Infirmary was demolished by Henry VIII to make way for St. James' Palace. The original writer of the song is unknown. The House of the Rising Sun is a variant as is the Streets of Laredo. Same origin.
great stuff, perfect voice, can you do a Leon tune?
