I think a big reason he puts up with you is that when Harry says his negative feelings out loud, Kim silently has similar feelings but he just keeps them repressed. Kim puts on a show of being well composed, but internally I think he's really not that far away from where Harry is. Helping Harry work through his issues helps Kim work through his own issues

The horrific necktie has a small but absolutely fascinating role here, in many ways the tie represents self destruction and, if i may make a stretch, anxiety and a little bit of masochism. The tie is a deeply awful part of harrys psyche but even it tries to push harry away from the edge because then the fun ends, you cant spiral downwards anymore when youve finally come crashing into the bottom.

I was such an ass to him 1st time i tried playing and he left me.. i thought he was the killer so i fucked with him nonstop. Then i decided to try again and treat him well but fuck with everyone else. Kim is a really kind soul used to people being shitty to him. Gave him a few compliments and how he responds like the typical compliment starved hard working underappreciated man made me feel bad for being an ass earlier and relate to him much more. Then we became besties and when i thought i lost him later I was truly heartbroken. All for a videogame character.. the writing is just too good. Ive read so many great classics and it's crazy that a game blows a lot of them away, but it does. I want to read his book but its not in English. Might be time to build an ai app to translate the whole thing.

Tragicomedy is the most difficult genre. Before this game, I've only seen this in very few movies. To fit a sparkling joke and tearing grief, not only into the game - just in one dialogue - this is the highest skill. And, reading the comments, I see once again how this game gets to the very depths of thoughts and aspirations of most various people.
Holy fuck, the pain threshold at the end of this was chilling. A small, tempting voice going against the rational volition, always there with an offer.

fun fact I very nearly soft locked myself at this Authority check. I had to look up a guide to unlocking myself and only the Wirral dice in the bookshop saved me. If I had already got that dice, my first ever run would have been completely soft locked at this point. I might have well have just offed myself.
There are no soft locks in the game. There are only a handful of dice rolls you actually have to do and, for all of them, failing enough times will lead to a different path forward.
I've been playing this game for over two years and still not finished the first playthrough(I'm close tho). It's so so good but as a bipolar fucked up person with suicidal attempts on my past there are times it's too much and I've to take a break. This scene kept me away from it for over 4 months. Still I find happiness in the fact that some writer knew how it feels but its still around to make this game and in the calm voice of Kim when he tells you to look at him and to don't worry.
Yea, I can imagine playing this game with symptoms so similar to Harry can be really difficult at times. I know that I personally don’t experience suicidal thoughts, but some of his thoughts can be genuinely a lot and I’m glad that it’s taken seriously both in the game and in the fandom even though it has some goofyness attatched to it at times. Very appreciative that Kim exists too, I def don’t think the game could work without him, and I hope you’re able to eventually finish the game.

My favorite part of this is that you can't see Harry's portrait even though it's the second day, which means he's had amnesia for a day and a half, and hasn't looked in a mirror *once* yet.
I stumbled onto this ending without any idea what I was doing. Almost shit myself laughing so hard. The writing in this game is genius. And I say that as an unpublished author who has written hundreds of thousands of words. Some of them are really good. But if I manage to write anything as brilliant as Disco Elysium I will die happy.
It still takes me out seeing Kim instead of getting a man who nearly shot himself some help he rather tries to get Harry to not think about it and continue working on the case. Sure its the second best thing to do but there should be an ending where Kim calls the investigation off and instead tries to get Harry help. “I’m sorry but it won’t be the last time I will do it again” is a bit of a red flag. I also would’ve loved to see the “but why did she leave me” dialogue but it would’ve probably immediately go “don’t think about that think about the case”. Still love the game, but it was something that bothered me while playing.
I think that might be Kim's coping mechanism - compartmentalize compartmentalize compartmentalize. So he's trying to help Harry do the same thing because that's the only way he knows how to get through stuff. Plus, I mean, you can't continue the plot if you're in the psych ward (if such a thing even exists in this world).
Kim isn’t exactly best with that sort of thing, he only knows the detective life and Kim believes Harry has the best chance by just continuing the case rather than letting all his problems build up while he seeks help. I think Kim is doing the best he can for the situation, solving the case is all Harry can do now, it’s the last piece of any real structure he can climb onto and Kim obviously sees that. Kim wishes he could just stop the case for Harry but Harry *needs* this.
I deal with a lot of the issues portrayed in this game. Sometimes throwing yourself entirely into something is the best thing to do. Keep moving forward and don't let yourself steep in the bad thoughts.
If you did choose "Why did she leave me?" Kim will just sigh and say "I don't why she left you." So yeah, Kim is out of his element when dealing with more emotional/mental health matters.
I feel like *so* many people miss the entire point of kims character. Kim is the "good cop," but he is also the example of why "good cops" dont fix a broken system. Kim is afraid of Harry's authority, he puts up with his actions because Harry is the higher ranked officer. He would never "call off" the case because in his mind, he does not have the authority to make such a decision. Kim is the prime example of ACAB, it doesnt matter that he means well, it doesnt matter that he does his best to control and pacify harry, at the end of the day he is complicit with harry and the entire precinct's bad behaviour. TLDR Kim handling the situation better would have compromised his entire purpose as a character, giving Kim the agency to call off the case would be missing the entire point.
I saw this about a week ago and I'm still laughing about it, this is a high point of "how can you guess what I'm gonna do when *I* don't know what I'm going to do"
I also deeply appreciate the "I'm going to try it again soon" line, it's just. the two sides of the coin of chronic suicidal ideation where you're both scared because you never know when it's going to change from normal background pain to something borderline unbearable that you can only wait out, and also "yeah sure I'll do whatever [does a Jackass stunt]"
My first ever playthrough I went through that entire dialogue option, the whole time thinking "No way it's gonna actually let me canonically shoot myself in the face as a last ditch effort to establish my Authority, right?". And much to my bemusement, I was incorrect.

I feel like out of all the voices in Harry's head the the one most harmful for him directly is electrochemistry for obvious reasons but authority can be just as bad but in more subtle ways while it calls for being honorable and respected it usually ends making him act as an asshole or as seen here suicidal
The option "I want to turn back." has a strange sadness, because despite you choosing it and Kim agreeing, you can't until you grab the gun. Makes me glad you can choose not to stick it in your mouth, but its still troubling how hard it took Harry to refrain from pushing the eject button.

I was such an ass to him 1st time i tried playing and he left me.. i thought he was the killer so i fucked with him nonstop. Then i decided to try again and treat him well but fuck with everyone else. Kim is a really kind soul used to people being shitty to him. Gave him a few compliments and how he responds like the typical compliment starved hard working underappreciated man made me feel bad for being an ass earlier and relate to him much more. Then we became besties and when i thought i lost him later I was truly heartbroken. All for a videogame character.. the writing is just too good. Ive read so many great classics and it's crazy that a game blows a lot of them away, but it does. I want to read his book but its not in English. Might be time to build an ai app to translate the whole thing.

Tragicomedy is the most difficult genre. Before this game, I've only seen this in very few movies. To fit a sparkling joke and tearing grief, not only into the game - just in one dialogue - this is the highest skill. And, reading the comments, I see once again how this game gets to the very depths of thoughts and aspirations of most various people.
If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend Bojack Horseman. It's another excellent example.

This whole scenario, but especially the dialogue with Kim afterwards, made me need to take a two hour break from the game. As a person who has and does deal with suicidal ideation, the whole scene was just. So accurate. So real. Idk it was a lot but also really good to see.
Harry is such an interesting character that I think hits home with a lot of people a little too well. I absolutely love this game

fun fact I very nearly soft locked myself at this Authority check. I had to look up a guide to unlocking myself and only the Wirral dice in the bookshop saved me. If I had already got that dice, my first ever run would have been completely soft locked at this point. I might have well have just offed myself.
If you will fail 3 times - Kim will show his authority for them and you complete the task

There are no soft locks in the game.
There are only a handful of dice rolls you actually have to do and, for all of them, failing enough times will lead to a different path forward.

I've been playing this game for over two years and still not finished the first playthrough(I'm close tho). It's so so good but as a bipolar fucked up person with suicidal attempts on my past there are times it's too much and I've to take a break. This scene kept me away from it for over 4 months. Still I find happiness in the fact that some writer knew how it feels but its still around to make this game and in the calm voice of Kim when he tells you to look at him and to don't worry.
Yea, I can imagine playing this game with symptoms so similar to Harry can be really difficult at times. I know that I personally don’t experience suicidal thoughts, but some of his thoughts can be genuinely a lot and I’m glad that it’s taken seriously both in the game and in the fandom even though it has some goofyness attatched to it at times. Very appreciative that Kim exists too, I def don’t think the game could work without him, and I hope you’re able to eventually finish the game.

My favorite part of this is that you can't see Harry's portrait even though it's the second day, which means he's had amnesia for a day and a half, and hasn't looked in a mirror *once* yet.
I stumbled onto this ending without any idea what I was doing. Almost shit myself laughing so hard. The writing in this game is genius. And I say that as an unpublished author who has written hundreds of thousands of words. Some of them are really good. But if I manage to write anything as brilliant as Disco Elysium I will die happy.

It still takes me out seeing Kim instead of getting a man who nearly shot himself some help he rather tries to get Harry to not think about it and continue working on the case. Sure its the second best thing to do but there should be an ending where Kim calls the investigation off and instead tries to get Harry help. “I’m sorry but it won’t be the last time I will do it again” is a bit of a red flag.
I also would’ve loved to see the “but why did she leave me” dialogue but it would’ve probably immediately go “don’t think about that think about the case”. Still love the game, but it was something that bothered me while playing.
I think that might be Kim's coping mechanism - compartmentalize compartmentalize compartmentalize. So he's trying to help Harry do the same thing because that's the only way he knows how to get through stuff.
Plus, I mean, you can't continue the plot if you're in the psych ward (if such a thing even exists in this world).
Kim isn’t exactly best with that sort of thing, he only knows the detective life and Kim believes Harry has the best chance by just continuing the case rather than letting all his problems build up while he seeks help.
I think Kim is doing the best he can for the situation, solving the case is all Harry can do now, it’s the last piece of any real structure he can climb onto and Kim obviously sees that.
Kim wishes he could just stop the case for Harry but Harry *needs* this.
I deal with a lot of the issues portrayed in this game. Sometimes throwing yourself entirely into something is the best thing to do. Keep moving forward and don't let yourself steep in the bad thoughts.
If you did choose "Why did she leave me?" Kim will just sigh and say "I don't why she left you." So yeah, Kim is out of his element when dealing with more emotional/mental health matters.
I feel like *so* many people miss the entire point of kims character. Kim is the "good cop," but he is also the example of why "good cops" dont fix a broken system. Kim is afraid of Harry's authority, he puts up with his actions because Harry is the higher ranked officer. He would never "call off" the case because in his mind, he does not have the authority to make such a decision. Kim is the prime example of ACAB, it doesnt matter that he means well, it doesnt matter that he does his best to control and pacify harry, at the end of the day he is complicit with harry and the entire precinct's bad behaviour.
TLDR Kim handling the situation better would have compromised his entire purpose as a character, giving Kim the agency to call off the case would be missing the entire point.

I also deeply appreciate the "I'm going to try it again soon" line, it's just. the two sides of the coin of chronic suicidal ideation where you're both scared because you never know when it's going to change from normal background pain to something borderline unbearable that you can only wait out, and also "yeah sure I'll do whatever [does a Jackass stunt]"
My first ever playthrough I went through that entire dialogue option, the whole time thinking "No way it's gonna actually let me canonically shoot myself in the face as a last ditch effort to establish my Authority, right?". And much to my bemusement, I was incorrect.

I never got this dialogue branch when I played Disco Elysium a couple years ago. I guess I didn't have suicidal tendencies to steer me towards it.
I feel like out of all the voices in Harry's head the the one most harmful for him directly is electrochemistry for obvious reasons but authority can be just as bad but in more subtle ways while it calls for being honorable and respected it usually ends making him act as an asshole or as seen here suicidal
I think it's very telling to how dire the circumstances were, that even Electrochemistry chimes in to tell him to go out and calm himself down

Kim is like the best best friend in any video game I can think of. He thinks you're nuts and wants to help you.
The option "I want to turn back." has a strange sadness, because despite you choosing it and Kim agreeing, you can't until you grab the gun. Makes me glad you can choose not to stick it in your mouth, but its still troubling how hard it took Harry to refrain from pushing the eject button.
Strangely enough this video is what introduced me to, and eventually led to me playing Disco elysium.
