The Mission Impossible franchise is full of great examples of how to construct a compelling heist sequence. This video examines the heists from the original film and Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation to reveal the anatomy of a heist.

Now that there are six of these films, which is your favorite? Do you think Fallout is the best of the series?
1 I'd say
Lessons from the Screenplay grew up playing Fallout
Lessons from the Screenplay ghost protocol for sure. The third act is a bit weak and the villains could be better but brad bird does everything he possibly can with his direction and the first 30 minutes at the Kremlin is incredibly suspenseful and well-paced, as well as the burge Khalifa scene.
Fallout is not only my favorite of the films but it's the best one yet, period.
mi video essay FUCK YEAH!!!
How to execute the perfect heist:
- have Tom Cruise
- tell him it's for a movie
- he will do everything
Yeah...where does he live? I need him for a 'movie'
"As Benji does tech things" is exactly how I understand everything he ever does.
Imao
That's the only explanation since everything he does is technological fantasy lol... he's a typical movie "hacker" able to use crazy visual based operating systems(like in Jurassic park, which is a whole nother thing since the girl calls it Linux based lmao) to just like, tap and make things happen. Or just bang away on keys and magically make technology bend to his will.. he's British so.. he's really just a wizard and pretends to use computers when he is actually casting magic spells, but he has to keep it secret and make it look like it's tech not magic because of the laws against showing magic to muggles.
lol yes
Luther: great at hacking
Krieger: great at being Jean Reno
Clara Riefen 🤣🤣😂😂
That cracked me up too!
That's when I paused the video to give it a thumbs up.
I paused. Laughed. Replayed that part. x3
Loved it
"Krieger, who is great at being Jean Reno"
Lost my coffee laughing...
:P
Something I think would be interesting to contrast Mission Impossible’s impossible heists with would be Ocean’s Eleven (2001), where the plan only APPEARS to go wrong.
Couldn't agree more, would love to see that. (Although I do prefer the MI format)
Very true. I love ocean's 11. So good.
I wonder if it's possible to have a mix of both.
although in the original ..actual original Ocean's everything does go wrong and they don't even try to get it back.
Fallout was one of the best heist/espionage films ever, between the acting, music, and cinematography. It’s such a good series
Sam Moerbe Solomon Lane was the ultimate heist
Reservoir dogs is the best heist movie imo
Rogue Nation's heist, while entertaining, was much less suspenseful for me than the first Mission Impossible simply because I never for one second believed the main character would drown and die. On the other hand, it was very reasonable that he would get caught in the first movie and he would need to improvise from there.
I don't think you can ever create suspense by putting the main character, the one driving the whole plot and the movie, in a life threatening situation before the climax of the movie. You can still create tension before the climax by creating situations where he might get caught, lose something important, fail to achieve something, lose a secondary character etc.
Wow, that's quite an insightful thought. I could never quite figure out why that was before but you hit the nail on the head.
Black Panther receives some criticism for this. I think the idea of failure or how Ethan was going to get out of that situation was the suspense they were looking for. I never thought he would die, but I was glued to my seat as to how he was going to get out & had actually forgotten all about Illsa at that point.
Yeah good points. True I never believed he would die, but the scene just kept amping the tention up, so that I was also glued to my seat to see how he's going to get out of it. Because he had to! He is Tom Cruise, Mr. Mission Impossible! So in a way, I almost feel like they tried to play with that.
Me: can Tom Cruis-
Everyone: Yes, yes he can
- e leave Scientology please ?
No. Don't give him ideas
- come out of the closet now please?
the end Advertisement transition was smooth!
Yet another great vid
Thank ya!
Who's great at being Jean Reno
- Michael, 2018
My pick for best UA-cam-quote of the year
lol
I scrolled too much for this.
This may seem a silly comparison, but this makes me think of the car crash/car escape scene in "Scream 2," which I think is a stellar example of this type of situation, only the setup is much, much simpler, the stakes are higher and more immediate, and the solutions are more believable.
The masked killer has two young women trapped in a police car, where their doors don't unlock from the inside. They crash, he's unconscious or dead, they cannot escape through their doors or windows. Neve Campbell realizes the only escape is through the front seat, over the actual body of the killer, right in the line of danger.
It's a scene that is chock full of tension, because you don't have to keep too many things in mind, you don't have to suspend your disbelief too much, and it's SO TENSE because there's only one variable that matters, which is whether or not the killer will wake up.
Love your series. Always love when I see a new video in my subscriptions!
Great analysis, nicely done!
Huh. So Mission: Impossible Films are all secretly heist movies. HOW HAVE I NEVER NOTICED THIS BEFORE?
Because they are good Heist movies.
Because there's more to them than heists.
Probably because the heist happens at the midpoint and not the end. A lot of heist movies save the heist for the climax (Tower Heist, Ant Man, Oceans 11, Fast Five)
Probably because the heist happens at the midpoint and not the end. A lot of heist movies save the heist for the climax (Tower Heist, Ant Man, Oceans 11, Fast Five)
Even the newest one: Fallout, is a heist movie. Except they’re not trying to get an object necessarily.
TWO VIDEOS IN TWO WEEKS??? WHAT????
favorite by far is MI3. its got an emotional anchor (His Wife) unlike all the others. it had the flare of JJ (no pun intended), and Philip C was ruthlessly charismatic. I love your videos. I would love to see your take on elements that dont reinforce mainstream cinema, but deliberately subvert and go against the grain. (doesn't have to be arthouse, just movies that dont paint by numbers)
Same, MI3 is also my favourite. I can watch that movie over and over. I love the end where he finally tells her what he really does, and then she just laughs at how silly it sounds! xD
Fun fact: Fallout had a minimal 30-page script. Screenwriters can still learn a lot from this, and some day I'd love to hear you talk about that.
Michael you are a genius... Thank you for another insightful look at the techniques used in screenplays... I've been learning a ton from your videos... Keep up the great work... For me, Mission Impossible, the first one, is my favorite... Only because it was the first time I was introduced some amazon plot twists in a movie... That mixed with the incredible and suspenseful action scenes had me glued to the screen the entire run time... It was, and still is, amazing...
groundhog day, beetlejuice, a quite place, eternal sunshine, magnolia, galaxy quest, cabin in the woods, omg i have so many suggestion!!!! i love your channel probably my favorite channel on youtube
Brilliant. Thanks for this. My english is not very good so I can’t get all the meanings (even with subs) because I don’t know many words and I had to search. But, for people who wants to learn more about cinema, this is really helpful. Again, thanks for all your work. (I’m from Peru 🇵🇪)
Thanks Jhoel!
yo I just submitted subtitles in spanish, lmk if I got them right!
Watching again, thank you very much!
Keep learning. You're doing good. Australia👍
What a coincidence that I just re-watched the first Mission Impossible last weekend, so I easily recalled the key moments mentioned in the video. Also seen Fallout during the same weekend too. Definitely the best of the series so far, with Ghost Protocol being second best.
As always, should you make a bad video, I will disavow any knowledge of your action. Just kidding! Awesome video on tension building. Keep it up!
:P
I was never really interested in the Mission Impossible series, but I am now. Very good video
They're a fun group of movies!
Bro, you got some nerve showing those scenes simultaneously! I've seen both movies several times and _still_ almost had a heart attack.
Best way of starting in August: watching a new LftS-video to forget the burning heat outside and just relax ♥
Great video, keep it up!
Greeting from Germany
I really love heist movies and I think it's because of what you said near the end of the essay that Heist movies mirrors storytelling in general. Whenever I see one, since the structure is usually pretty established it's pretty interesting to dig for the true meaning of the heist itself and see the character development through it. Thank you for another great video - I cannot wait for the next one!
Epic breakdown, as always.
Excellent scene analyses. I love your work so much!
Fav is between Ghost Protocol and Fallout.
These are such great videos. Thank you for taking the time to make them.
Thank you for taking the time to watch them!
One of the other ways you can go about the plan sequence is by having the characters practice skills in their plan without the audience knowing the whole plan.
Wow. Lessons from the screenplay, you did something awesome there. Your monologue 0:00-0:40 was just perfectly made like when in the heist moments of the MI series, you're controlling our minds till the very finale, which is the reveling of the truth
your segways into sponsors are by far the cleanest i ever seen omg
"Benji does tech things," is really the only way to describe it, let's be real.
2 video in a week? What is this Christmas?
Christmas now takes place between July 24th and July 31st. Adjust your calendars as necessary, everyone.
Lessons from the Screenplay whatever happened to the second part of you avengers video?
U should do Inception as ur Next Video.....
sweet christmas. ;)
Cruise is a maniac and I love it
Completely crazy and a lot of fun to watch.
Hey, Michael. As an aspiring screenwriter and showrunner, I have thoroughly enjoyed your channel and have gained valuable knowledge because of your videos and effort. This has been my favorite so far because of a crime drama heist series I've been toying with for years. So thank you very much!
Your videos keep on getting better and better. keep up the awesome work!
Thank you for this delighting work
So the mission impossible saga is still one of the best action movie franchise ever and I can't be happier about it.
You never had any explanation of the heist in the TV series. That's what made it well written and so good. Discovering how they'll achieve their mission as it progresses.
I like how you edit your videos but more importantly how educational they are. I am a fan.
You should've talked about the launch codes sale in _MI4: Ghost Protocol._ Going into a sale on two fronts with no disguises, hoping neither party have met each other prior, and being on edge of which front blows their cover.
That shit is tense and iconic!
So excited to see it tonight!
This has been an amazing high quality video. Thank you very very much!
I know this is from a few years back. But I love good heist movies and the Mission Impossible series in particular. Love the background music you use in this as you are explaining points of different scenes. Thanks my friend, you're always the best.
Recently did a binge of the first 3 seasons of the Mission Impossible tv series and I LOVED it. The Tom Cruise movies obviously have bigger budgets, faster pace, cool (but very silly) stunts, but his movies lack in the brains department. The plots in each episode of the show are amazingly intricate and the covert 'cons' are often flawless.
Thank you for everything you've done. I cannot tell you how much you've helped me.
Wow. Great video! Always learn something from your videos!
Great episode man! Thanks!
This is an awesome breakdown of the Mission Impossible movies. A lot of people see it as a simple action movie but they are really well executed in building tension and change expectations. I really liked Rogue Nation but still by far one of my favorite modern Mission Impossible movies is Brad Bird's Ghost Protocol. Great video as always!
I like how you mentioned the visual cues used to create tension. The sound level meter in Mission Impossible, the Oxygen meter in Rogue Nation and even the gloves in Ghost Protocol
Great work again, man. You always hit these out of the park.
This was a great breakdown, and I think it'll really help me when revising my own heist script. Thanks!
Another great episode!
Brilliant content as always 🙏
More proof why MI1 & 5 are two of the best in the series! Great video Michael! Great reminders and new insights for my noir! 😀
Great Video!! So interesting to see the different routes writers use that serve the same job in a script.
As usual, brilliant stuff.
Ghost protocol will always be my favorite Mission Impossible movie. No questions asked.
Seeing the Burj Khalifa sequence in IMAX is something I'll never forget.
"Krieger, who is great at being jean Reno". lol, thats a good line.
I promise i will become your Patron when i get paid next month, your content is top notch, you just helped me get through my script, wonderful channel!
another great video you never disappoint!!! mission impossible of one of my fav movie franchises and you just made then even better!!!
Thanks again Michael!
Great analysis and breakdown. Very entertaining look at some of the factors that make the MI franchise so enjoyable.
Another great video Michael!
Thanks Donald!
Great video man!
You recommended Anatomy of Story so many times that I had to buy one for myself, incredible book, and thank you so much for the recommendation, as an aspiring writer your videos and recommendations have been pure gold. Keep on doing your excellent work.
Awesome! I'm glad you enjoy-I feel somewhat justified in mentioning it so much now.
I love every analysis you make, keep it up!!
Thanks!
Great breakdown! Looking forward to seeing the new film.
Very well explained man!!
As a person who aspires to write an epic action film, this is great advice! Thanks!
castleprice i heard it here first ! ;D hope to see a film of yours one day
Well written about writing yet again 👌
Love your channel, keep up the good work.
Thanks Leonardo!
Great dissection! You always post very detailed and informative content. Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
Great work
I watched the most recent Mission Impossible. Thanks for this content!
great job man
To be honest, i never actually thought of these movies like this. Wow, this channel keeps making me see movies differently
Wow thank you for sharing this awesome app, I didn’t know something like this existed !! It’s amazing and life-changing almost 😱
One thing I noticed with Fallout is the sound design. When it came to it, I noticed in a lot of the fight scenes, there is 0 music to go a long with it. Which plays up how brutal and "realistic" it is.
Welp time to binge watch LFTS. Amazing work as usual.
That was so cool! By chance, we actually watched the first one just yesterday in our little movie club and while it's got some problems, it's still a fun heist movie. Also, one of us hadn't seen it before, so that brought extra excitement to the table.
I was actually thinking of fake ally opponents during the film for, well, obvious reasons. These movies have some of the clearest examples of the device ever filmed.
Oh, an my favourite is III, although the first one will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first time I ever saw a thriller and boy was I hooked! "You can make a movie like this?! More please!"
Aboslutely love your work, Michael! Thank you for these videos! :)
Excellent video
Another great video! Thank you kind sir. Got me all excited to see MI: Fallout this weekend!
wow this video was so educational!
Thank you for yet another great video 👍
Thanks Andre!
Videos like these make me want to watch all the Mission Impossibles. Didn't think too much about them until Fallout came out.
Thank you, Michael. Per usual much needed information.
Thanks :) 👋
What you said in your video was perfect. The main common thread in both these heists to make the stakes go even higher is showcasing that there is something critical that'll definitely go wrong. That said though, according to me the first movie's heist in the CIA for the NOC list is the better one according to me. There was less flash and more tension because of that closed room they tried to enter into. The closed room with all the issues they could face there is the main reason why this heist is remembered to this day. Your comparison was perfect, but the first heist definitely deserves a more at length discussion.
My biggest problem with Ocean's 8 was that nothing went awry in the heist AT ALL. There was one tiny hiccup that was rectified within seconds and the heist was back on the rails. Ever since i saw that movie I've been thinking about how heists are only interesting when things don't go according to plan. Great video! My favorite M:I is either one or four, though I haven't seen Fallout yet
I just love the Mission Impossible movies. I need to do a marathon one of these days to pick my favorite.
Yet again a fantastic video! Can’t wait to watch Fallout on Thursday!
Good stuff!
Amazing video
Michael, you magnificent beast. I just saw Fallout yesterday and now you drop a Mission Impossible video?!
It's obvious that you too are a very good screenwriter. You get us hooked on to your narrations, I was literally having gasps while you were discussing the exciting sequences. It's like I rewatched both of these movies!
I love your videos!! As an aspiring screenwriter, I've been wanting to buy a copy of Truby's guide as well since you always use it as a framework. Plus that segue to dashlane was flawless haha keep it up!!
This was great. I think I've only ever seen the first one, and that was when it came out. This made me want to go back and see the rest (or at least the best of the rest). I'd forgotten how clever that first film was.
i luv ur whole channel
Awesome as usual
Thanks, Victor!
