You need a warping board woman. I’ve seen pictures of persons using one sized so you could hang it off a door using wreath hangers making it easier to take down and put away. Would be a grand Christmas present. The piece is beautiful! Makes me want to buy a small loom. I took a class in weaving in college. I really enjoyed it. Keep eyeing looms over the years, but I need to go down another craft rabbit hole like I need a hole in my head. 😁 If you’re looking for something new to try on the loom look up warp painting. One of my classmates made a tablecloth of painted violets on a pale yellow cotton warp and wove the weft in the same pale yellow cotton. The finished piece was stunning, all the muted flowers. I still remember the piece 30 years later.
i know im asking randomly but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an instagram account? I was dumb lost my password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Israel Christian thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
BTW Grace, I think I've sold my problems with loosing warp tension on either side of my 32" loom! When rolling on the warp, I usually insert cardboard strips at intervals to help keep the tension. Well this time I also added extra short lengths of cardboard at either end, thus the ends were on a tighter tension than the middle. As I weave I usually insert fabric lengths onto the roller. Anyways it worked!! 🎉🎉🎉
I love the look of the gradient skein. It gives you a lot of variety without having to tie on different colors. I was also thinking if you put the heddle in the second heddle block close to you it wouldn’t be able to keep popping out.
This was so interesting- thank you for sharing the process. How good does that gradient look with the extra dark yarn you added - a match made in heaven! Yay for the weft yarn getting its day in the sun too - it looks fantastic.
YarnderWoman - Melinda I know! I carried it around all of SE Asia and Australia, and through Canada and the US. It would be a crime if I didn’t start using it 🤣
Hiya!! I just bought my 16" Sample it loom, it arrives tomorrow!!!!ehh, so I'm so excited but my mind is blown by all the yarn types and weights I have no clue what yarn to start with hahaha....
I know I'm very late to this party, but I wonder if the miscalculation is due to not accounting for the little bit of length that's lost each time you wrap around the apron bar (is that what that's called?) on the back, the peg at the front, and loss due to the angle. Oh, and you probably lose a bit to gravity as well: the threads bow a little in the middle, like a hammock. A bunch of tiny losses adds up to whole warp threads "missing." But thank you for this video! I like seeing the math done in real time - it looks way simpler seeing someone do it "live" instead of just running through the numbers after the math is done.
I agree about the scarf you're wearing---absolutely gorgeous ! I see that you're able to just put the loom (16" SampleIt?) in your lap and weave---is that something you could do in the car, or is it too cumbersome for that? What about the 10" SampleIt---do you feel it's too small, or is it a good size to work with (especially on roadtrips)? Thanks !
This was so helpful in getting started and the colours in this project are beautiful!! Thank you for sharing! 💚 I especially loved the little cat break 😻 I'm glad that your partially eaten warp held! When knitting, you can just rejoin the yarn but what do you do while weaving?
HOLLY DELANEY the paper separates the layers of warp before being woven, and the cloth after. The warp has to be separate from the layers below it because it will effect the tension. The cloth is protected by the layer of paper after. It might be on the loom for a long time.
I am fascinated by looms. Really no idea of set up or needs, but am so drawn to them. Honestly want to make dishtowels. I am wondering how you learned to do it. It looks so complicated. How long does it take to learn such a thing? Thank you. Love your artistry and talent. ❤ Kimmie
Kimmie Mamatomany honestly with the looms from Ashford it’s so easy and it comes with a great instruction. You can also find plenty of videos to help you warp, but warping is not as hard as it looks. It just takes some time.
Kromski has a new little loom that is called Presto. It is wonderful and comes with really great instructions and a ball of yarn. I bought the 10 inch loom and made a terrific scarf following their directions.
This is so beautiful. Is it the thinner the thread, the bigger the holes will be between each line? How can I avoid those big holes when using thin threads? I wish you can make a video for beginner
Do you have a video for the linen weaving ? I have cotton warp string and fingering lindy chain linen /pima cotton blend fir the weft. im beginning my first time weaving on a rigid heddle loom with a 15 dpi .
question on your vlogs July 5 and 7 Sent at 11:35 AM July 15, 2019 Hi Grace ---- I love your weaving videos!!!! they have given me so many techniques that I can use to overcome my current frustrations with the ridged heddle loom. I have a couple of questions maybe you can help me with. Can you tell me how you set warp on your finished fabric? How do you finish you cut weaving? with a Serger? Machine hem? Crochet? Wear does your inspiration come from when making clothing from your woven fabric? Can you point me to where you have seen people knitting to shape woven fabric into garments?
I love the scarf you’re wearing!!! And what a beautiful warp!!! Can’t wait to buy myself a rigid heddle loom! (Just started saving up for one) I’ve never woven anything, so I have no idea about how much yarn a scarf would take, how much did you use for the weft? And how long did you make the shawl? 😊 did you make it the whole warp length? 😊
Just a little off topic but I know you are active in several groups that are out and about doing demonstrations. I live in the U.S. and belong to a group that I am sorry to say most of the members are older. My question to you is do you know of creative ways to attract younger people to get interested in the fiber arts.?
Hi Martha! I'm young-ish. I was introduced to weaving at the state fair by a demonstration. I ended up abandoning my husband with the baby and just sat and wove with the ladies for 3 hours. No regrets, I love my new hobby. I now have my brother making inkle loomed belts and my best friend weaving on a rigid heddle with me! ❤️ Good luck attracting new people. 💖
I know this question is older, but have you looked at what the meeting times are? A lot of younger people are still very much in the work force, so having times in the evening or weekends might help. Also, demonstrations at local family festivals (fall or spring ones sponsored by schools or parks for example).
Janet Hedley That’s a weird tablet you have! This is an Ashford 16inch (40cm) sample-it Rigid heddle loom I bought this one from Wingham Wool Works in the U.K.
This was my first tutorial at all and what I am missing are some basic explanations... I was disturbed by the mess but I loved the cat. Didn't like at all the idea to wrap such a precious garn into used paper bags. I don't know, but I had the impression everything was just put together in the moment of recording the video....
beautiful wake yes that’s exactly what this video was. Just a spur of the moment video showing how I work. I like to reuse as many things as I can to reduce my impact on the environment. Sorry you didn’t like my free video ...
I think I could listen to you talk and gaze at your beautiful warp forever. The way the colors blend together is so calming and satisfying!
I came seeking weaving tutorials. I stayed for the kitten XD
Omg that warp is soooo freaking beautiful I just can't take my eyes off of it 😍😍😍😍

Yetta O'Shea the absolute effort of a hand painted warp makes me weak.
I love this video!!!!! You are delightfully clever and authentic.... and what a sweet little helper you have with kitty.
Very informative and love the gradient. Cute kitty too.
I'd be so nervous about my weaving if I had cats running around, lol
I love the colors and am grateful for the demonstration.
I think that color added charm and looks like it was always part of this project :-). By the way I love the scarf you're wearing.

@Israel Christian it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy!

@Lachlan Damon happy to help xD

You can flatten / remove wrinkles from the paper bags by ironing with a hot dry iron. It works quite well, and I’ve done it many times over the years.
That worked up into an absolutely gorgeous gradient fabric! Thanks for the informative video!
Gorgeous warp. I’m rubbish at math, so my hubby helps me figure that when warping.
hehehe Little Kitty stole the show lol so precious
I love the colors.
You can use a rubber band to hold the heddle in place as you warp it. That way it won’t pop off. Beautiful project!
I love the look of the gradient skein. It gives you a lot of variety without having to tie on different colors. I was also thinking if you put the heddle in the second heddle block close to you it wouldn’t be able to keep popping out.
Your selvages are perfect! Mine always look like a six year old first timer did it.

I love how you can weave laying down on your back!!! Warping still scares me

🌈 Grace, that is gorgeous!
Also, do you have a video (or could you make one) about how your sew your hems while the project is still on the loom?
Look up videos on hemstitching technique. Kelly Casanova has a good one.
I love that the SampleIt looms are so short. They seem like perfect lap/couch looms.

Ruth McIntosh start with DK or Worsted weight and give it a go!
Brilliant. Thanks very much. Lots of black friday deals online for yarns so I'll get in a few and start... slightly terrified but also excited.
Do you have a video on warping or weaving the scarf you are wearing at the beginning of the video? It's absolutely lovely!
Hi Grace, I love the colour combination of the scarf you were wearing in the video. Do you have any tutorial showing that?
I know I'm very late to this party, but I wonder if the miscalculation is due to not accounting for the little bit of length that's lost each time you wrap around the apron bar (is that what that's called?) on the back, the peg at the front, and loss due to the angle. wow that is so beautiful!!
This is sooo brilliant!
Do you have another video of what the shawl ended up looking like? How did you finish the project? Inquiring kittens want to know!
Nice to see beans
What is the purpose of the cardboard spacers and/or the paper bags? Very new

That's cracking looking
Two questions - why do you need to wrap paper around? and How do you keep your cat from playing in the yarn! Ha!
HOLLY DELANEY the paper separates the layers of warp before being woven, and the cloth after. The warp has to be separate from the layers below it because it will effect the tension. The cloth is protected by the layer of paper after. It might be on the loom for a long time.

The kromski Presto loom comes with terrific instructions even for a beginner. They include excellent pictures which I definitely needed!!!!😁
Awesome to see in ff!!!

Thanks for this! I have been afraid to warp because I have a very curious kitty.. hope she doesn’t go after it!
This is so beautiful. Is it the thinner the thread, the bigger the holes will be between each line? How can I avoid those big holes when using thin threads? I wish you can make a video for beginner
This is quite old, but if you have thinner yarn, you should use a heddle with more dents, and for thicker yarn a heddle with fewer dents.
Do you have a video for the linen weaving ? I have cotton warp string and fingering lindy chain linen /pima cotton blend fir the weft. im beginning my first time weaving on a rigid heddle loom with a 15 dpi .

Curious if you used all the weft for one scarf or did you mark the halfway point so you could make two. Your weaving looks beautiful. 👌
Love it
