Thanks for this one! I first to know Flash Gordon via the old King Comics series. Personally, I liked the 1980 Flash Gordon movie. It was fun, with Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin, Brian Blessed as King Vultan, and Max Von Sydow perfectly cast as Ming the Merciless. The updating of Flash as a Jets football player aside (the comic strip states he was a renowned polo player), the film got the look of the comics right. Plus, Queen’s theme song’s one of the best for a movie theme.
I want Jeff Goldblum to be Ming the Merciless. I just think it would be funny to hear him say pulpy over the top villain lines like "Yes my minions, lay waste to all who oppose me! Let none survive my onslaught!"

Lots of great content in these old series. Just don't assume modern polish. Instead, realize you're seeing the origin of most sci fi you love today. Well worth a trip down this memory lane. Although, the modern rivals usually don't work. Times have changed and so have people's tastes. Better to enjoy these stories in the context of the past or disappointment will follow.
