My grandmother drove one that she got new, until 1964. We drove that big black car all over the country on family vacations. All of us kids piled in and rode in air conditioned comfort. It was super comfortable, better than the car that replaced it. Black with gray wool seats. Comfy in hot Texas summers! Best car of my childhood. Close second was my Mom’s 57 Olds Super 88 J2, a hot rod! Also super luxurious. Gosh, I miss those cars!
My parents had this exact car even the same color. I was driven home from the hospital in 1957 in it after I was borne.

Yes, from the days when American Made Products were the envy of the world. We made it all from the steel to the textiles and made them to LAST. Now we have been reduced to a country of consumers, accepting throw away products that just continue to plague us with bulging landfill. Shame on US --
Very well put this is from back when Cadillac earned their slogan Standard of the World. They are finally now starting to come around. Though I have to admit it's pretty sad to have a truck (if you can still call Escalade that) as the flagship of luxury car brand. The point about a country of consumers will come to sting us if not changed. When you fail to produce you are at the mercy of the producers. They are able to ship lesser quality since they know what are could you do. It would take quite a while to spool back up production. As many facilities need repaired or have been scrapped of production equipment. In addition as time goes on the amount of workers able to operate and maintain equipment falls and training adds time and inefficency.
I miss mine. It had all option including A/c and remote trunk. A beautiful car

The fleetwood 60 special was basically a series 62 sedan body with slim B-pillars and a long coupe trunklid added. For the added length, the wheel had to be put back in the middle of the rear wheel well, therefore creating a wheelbase of 133 inch, and an extended fender skirt, larger than of it's 62 series siblings. The interiorspace of the series 62 sedan and the Fleetwood 60 special were exactly the same.
Great cars none the less. 1956 was the last year of the super stiff laddertype frame. Combined with the new Jet a Way Hydramatic, it's economic yet powerfull 365 engine, and pre 1959 build quality, 1956 is one of the best Cadillacs to own.
1956 Cadillac 4 door pillared sedan is only available for 60 Special and Series 75 limousine. For Series 62, it came with 3 body styles and they are: 4 door sedan, known as Sedan DeVille, 2 door hardtop (Coupe DeVille) by a close margin, and a convertible (DeVille).
I have a 1956 Cadillac series 62 sedan, 6219, with very little in optional equipment besides the heater, fog lamps, safety glass and Wunderbar radio. It's in a class 4 ( 1- 6 category of value), all number matching and only had 48,000 miles when I bought it in 2005. I drive it regularly as Im disabled and retired. I have another car with AC for hot days but I still prefer the '56 because the air flo is so good you only feel the heat in stop and go traffic. Even then it isn't terrible. Home and pot metal is in poor shape as it sat out for yers before the owner finally garaged it. Im the third owner. I hope to restore her to the glory that she was this year and next. Mechanically she runs smoothly and powerfully, a joy to drive.
BRINGS BACK MEMORIES, I GREW UP IN ONE OF THOSE, MY PARENTS 49. OR 5O MUST HAVE BEEN A SERIES 60 OR SOMETHING WITH THE SMALLER DOUGHNUT SHAPED AIR CLANER. IT DID NOT HAVE POWER WINDOWS OR AIR CONDO. THE BRAKES WERE ALWAYS GIVING OUT, AND THE BATTERY GOING DEAD. I EVEN HAD NIGHT MARES I WAS INSIDE THE CAR AND THE CAR WAS SHAKING AND BOUNCING SHAKING AND BOUNCING AND THE DAGMARS WERE SPRAYING WATER AT ME. STILL, IT WAS A GREAT CAR,VERY BIG AND SECURE. I HAD A BABY SEAT WITH. A STEERING WHEEL SO I COULD DIRECT THE CAR IF NEED BE. WOW ALL THAT AND JUST 3 OR 4 YEARS OLD.
Do you think people will still be driving Acadias or any other of todays cars in 66 years? Cars had style back then.

The curb feelers were so great because you didn’t really have to worry about hitting anything since they would let you know ahead of time whether you were too close to another car or a pedestrian when you are speeding down the road.
One of the cars from the 50s to have an air conditioning set up. Look how complex it was than now.
I think by '58 or so, the air conditioning set up was the modern one still in use today...this old one sure was bulky, but I am told it did blow cold air throughout the car, so still was great in summer heat...

My uncle replaced his Packard with one. It was a pleasant car to drive, as I recall, but there was some sort of a serious transmission issue with the car and I think he ultimately regretted the purchase. There was just something special about the feel of the older Packard. My parents had a '63 Fleetwood that they enjoyed. It had a great ride and its only repair that I can recall was a water pump replacement.
Thank You for your comments! - Interesting that they had trouble with the transmission as the Packard Ultramatic transmission was known to be a problem unit. The 63 Cadillac, was a "change-over" year and there were two transmissions during that production sequence.
@@rodneyracer I was young but was allowed to drive the Packard Caribbean under close supervision on limited access roads. Still remember that fondly. There may have been transmission issues with the car but I'm not aware of them. Do seem to remember valve complaints of some sort. The impression I'm left with is of a very solid car. I think the Cadillac (a '56 , I think) that replaced it was significantly more powerful. The '63 I remember much better. It was our family car and I inherited a '55 Buick that I used in college. Aside from having to add a starter switch, it was trouble-free ...even the transmission.
Nice, as a kid the neighbors had s 55 coupe DeVille this light green with dark green top, theirs had dark green interior. They had a 52 sedan DeVille before this 55, funny thing was, it was the same color combo
the only thing about these cars that will have to be replaced is the springs on the suspension system. Over the years they compress. The 1956 Cadillac was probably one of the best built cars ever put out by General Motors.
Cadillac couldn't quite decide whether to call its more expensive models Fleetwoods or not. In 1956 they did not.

You never showed the distinctive roofline, that was very different from the DeVilles, regular Fleetwoods, 62's and 61's !

Very much enjoyed your description/walkaround, of "Paul's" 56, 60-special, Fleetwood, Also, - as are your other videos - educational, SOMEDAY, when I have the funds, I would like to have a 1956, similar to Paul's, and hope that you might consider helping me to locate a nice 1956, BUT FIRST, I must restore my 1969, sedan deville. Again, a great video.
You had to have curb feelers in those days cause if you hit the curb with the tire it would pop it or tear the side out of it.

The Casdy needs muffler work. Never heard that much noise come from my Brother's '56 Caddy. Actually, NO noise other than the radio and turn signals.

gawd, what an ugly car. Big, bloated, ugly barge, with ugly, low-slung, hooded front fenders. I remember when I was like 7 years old, and my neighbors down the street in San Jose had a white '56 Caddy Fleetwood parked in their garage...and I remember thinking what an ugly, creepy car it was, even then. In fact, I remember having nightmares about it. But the ugliest American car of all time has to be the 1960 Lincoln Continental. Especially with that inward-slanting rear window that went and down. That car was just friggin' ghastly. Even the horn made a creepy sound.
