Honda Civic Type R Review: Is It Worth the Price? (FL5)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 кві 2024
- It’s time to test drive and review the 2023 Honda Civic Type R! We'll also compare it to the Toyota GR Corolla at the end of the video, so stick around!
The Honda Civic Type R is the king of hot hatches. It comes with only a manual transmission - no automatic - and it’s the one we think of when we want to experience some good, old front-wheel-drive ripping.
The Civic Type R has been around since 1997, but for years, it didn’t come to America. We got the car in 2017 during the “FK8” generation, which came during the 10th gen of the Civic. That old model looked almost like it had a body kit on it - it was so aggressive and adolescent that you could confuse it with a battle bot.
We’re now on the “FL5” generation of the Type R, and its styling is a lot more mature. At first, I thought the FK8’s immaturity looked the best. Now, I love them both.
The 2023 Type R makes 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque from a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It has a lot of cool features, including its three-tip exhaust. Honda said when the three-tip exhaust debuted on the last gen that it was to optimize sound: a resonator for city and high-acceleration driving, and mufflers for highway driving.
The Type R is great on the racetrack, great on the road, and comes in equally great paint colors. But the current Type R (2024) starts at about $45,000, and a lot of people - whether they’re buying the car or not - wonder: Is the price worth it?
Let’s find out.
Thanks for watching my UA-cam channel. Enjoy the drive!

Thanks for two videos in one week!
Thank YOU for watching! Hoping to get these out faster now that we're really focusing on the channel
Bought mine on Monday and haven't stopped grinning would never have paid dealer markup and finally found mine at MSRP.
I absolutely love that. Enjoy it!
I also just got a 2024 for msrp sonic grey. Best car I have ever had the privilege of driving!!
Agree, it’s the only thing stopping me. That damn markup.
Haven't found one at msrp those get sold fast. Still waiting on dealers over here in California
Congrats. Love mine and never selling it.
I love your videos from start to finish, but you really have mastered the art of the intro. Every time I start a video of yours I am IMMEDIATELY hooked. Without a doubt my favorite long-form automotive content on UA-cam right now. Onward and upward!
Wow! Thank you so much for this. I really, really appreciate it
It could just be me but the music is a bit distracting and would probably be better being a bit quieter when you're talking. Great vid though
Good note! Thank you! We'll discuss. I really love the beat of the music and where it stops and starts, though - my husband places it beautifully
I think the music enhances the richness of what Alanis is going for. Sometimes it's a bit loud but audio volume can be tricky sometimes.
@@davidp2888 Thank y'all : )
I thought the music added to the video!
@@thomasxl200 I'm so glad you enjoyed!
I’m loving ur current video format, Alanis! Can’t wait to see what you have coming up👍
Ahhhh thanks so much! Lexus LC 500 next : )
My favorite thing about Alanis’ videos: cars and classical music, my two favorite things in the world
Ahhhhh thank you
Love that detail about the colour. Beautifully explained. Simple. Effective. Superb.
Thank you SO much. I was really excited for that bit!
This is one of my favorite cars! I’ve always loved this Civic! Brilliant job Alanis! Might I add, the classical music…chef’s kiss….it’s like elegant meets sporty! Brilliant, just brilliant!
Ahhhhh thank you so much! I absolutely LOVE this car (and the classical music/editing)
Newbie to your videos. Like your summary of the CTR, I have been around a while in the enthusiast car scene. So, I am a little surprised this is the first time I have seen one of your videos. To make a long story short, I am very impressed. Bravo!
Ahhhh thank you so much. I appreciate this!
This is my dream car. Markups are crushing that dream.
The way you deliver and explain things! 👌👌👌
Thank you so much 🤠
I like how you presented the car. History + market trends and stats. This is good info most of the reviews are missing. Keep up the good work
Ahhhh thank you! Appreciate it
Great walk around ! Just picked up a 24 type r Sonic Grey Pearl and couldn’t be happier 👍🏻
Ahhhhh have so much fun in it!
@@AlanisKing Thanks I’m sure going to try :)
Girl nice content! keep it up with them classic background. So OG
Ahhh thank you so much
Championship White is my favorite Honda color and you did a great job showing it! Paint color nuances are hard to capture on video and I don't think I've ever seen it done like that before.
Informative, well written, well shot, well edited: this is an excellent video. Keep it up King
Thank you SO much. Appreciate you a ton. I really liked the paint demonstration and love that you did too : )
You are indeed a lovely person and a true passionate. You deserve waaay more subscribers
Aw! Thank you so much
The perfect hot hatch, for when you need to transport 1,5 Alanissis 😂. Awesome review, amazing production quality!
Thank you always 🤠
beautiful review
Thank you SO much
Alanis, great video, perhaps I can help you stress test the back seats lol. Seriously, great job ❤ it would be the red 11th gen Type R for me
Thank you so much for watching!
As a content creator I understand and appreciate the use of public domain music.
As a classically trained musician, I love the choices made.
As an automotive content creator and consumer the volume is a bit high at times and pulls from what’s important… YOU, Alanis! (And the car, if we’re being fair and honest)
Still enjoy watching your own take on reviews and internerainment!
We’ve turned it down in more recent reviews! We’re just experimenting, since the channel is new. Thanks so much for watching!
I appreciate the love you show nascar!
I’m at Texas Motor Speedway right now 🤠
This might be the best 30 minutes of my morning.
Awww thank you! I absolutely love how this video turned out, and I hope you will too
Such a beautiful car. Great video and that white is magnificent.
Thank you so much for watching 🤠
rawly good review
Thank you 🤠
Dang, what a great video. Will you be doing a Type S video?
I sure hope so! I don’t know if there’s one in Texas right now. Thank you for watching 🤠
I wanna be a honda boy again lol as I loved my rsx type s but just can't get past the no e brake incase I have to winter drive it or wanna hoon. And I love the customizability of my Veloster N and pops n bangs. So glad I picked up my 22 VN with no mark up instead of marked up FK8 or holding out for FL5/ITS or GRC
That's also such a great car! I LOVE the Veloster N
10:53 Excellent point. Two great cars with two different vibes after years of not having an option (if a CTR is all one wanted) is pretty damn sweet. The markups ruin it but that just means people have to be more diligent to find the good priced ones. Get them while you can! When I bought my Focus RS I thought it was going to be around a while and it was here for just 3 years 😅
Focus RS is such a good choice. Wow. What a car
No idea as to your industry background, but, my god, are you unusually well-spoken. I was genuinely taken aback. Very unexpected. So many car reviewers can't help but fall into Bro Speak. You sound like a professional presenter.
Thank you SO much. I really appreciate it
Be curious to know what you think about the Integra Type S. I like the looks better and no markups (at least here in VA). Been thinking about replacing my M2 Competition with the Civic or Integra for better kiddo access to the back seat, but not sure if either FWD car will live up to my expectations after having the M2. It will be a tough act to follow.
I've been wanting to try out the Type S but haven't gotten in one yet! I'll have to see if there's one in Texas : )
I know someone that ditched an M2 for a new CTR and has zero regrets.
Happy Thursday Alanis!
Thank you so much Francisco 🤠🤠 happy Thursday!
22:00 well thats odd, the CTR had pretty apparent fake engine noise last I was told. Did they decide to drop it for this model year? Or did the owner disconnect it
I don’t *think* I said there was no noise enhancement! If I remember correctly, I think I said it doesn’t sound super false and fake (which it does in some cars)
Awesome car and video!
Thank you 🤠🤠
Nice review of the type R
Thank you 🤠
Nice review and nice car.The MSRP Is I think fairly appropriate for this car , but can't stohmach dealing with those people at the dealership and their disgusting markups.
You're so fair in thinking that! Markups make all of us sad
Bought one2024 type r and I love it
GREAT choice
I hope the high market over prices don’t kill this one. Like happened to the Ford Focus RS
I hope it’s here for many years to come
I didn’t know the new Type R was available in blue, and what a blue! I may have to consider one of these
It’s so good!
Hopefully Acuity will make a shifter for the FL5 soon. I believe Hybrid Racing has one already. I have the Acuity in my FK8 and OMG does it feel so good!
Fellow FK8 fan! Nice!
Did they ever fix the 2nd gear grind issue in the FL5?
I didn’t notice any issue!
FYI The gear grind issue can be fixed by simply running a different transmission fluid. Most people recommend running Amsoil Synchromesh. I switched to it, and have never experienced the grind since.
@@drewh22 I might do that on my next transmission fluid drain and fill, I've been babying 2nd gear and haven't had a grind in a while
As a weekend car it’s great fun😊 as a daily drive it’s just too stif to drive and the torque steering is evident in the 1st 2 or 3 gears especially in the wet😂
If you put 4 adults in it and do a weekend trip your passenger keep complaining about the noise and the harsh ride.
Good review cheers from Oz🇦🇺
Thank you so much for watching 🤠 I wish the torque steer was better! I hoped it would be less evident on this one
what are ur thoughts on the elantra n/i30n?
I haven't driven the Elantra N in a few years, but I really like it. I didn't review it at the time, so I don't have enough notes to give you a straight comparison
@@AlanisKing Fair enough, maybe a review sometime in the future? 👀
Liked the music, but it initially made me think this was a Cut/Jubilee video! 😂
Hahahaha
Champ white is one of those colors that really needs to be appreciated in person.
Now is this car worth its MSRP? I can’t think of many new cars that can do as many tasks efficiently as the type r.
Considering that is a 4 door - 4 passenger vehicle.
There isn't other similar car that perform better (in every category) for less money.
This includes the Integra Type S MSRP too.
*There are a few that might accelerate faster in a straight line but that is all.
Great points!
I feel you regarding the Rear seat
Thanks for watching 🤠
I'm stuck between a 2024 championship white type r or a stratosphere blue 2023 auto supra. Help!!!!!!!!!!!
Both good choices. I’d lean Type R 🤠
See this is why alanis's videos are so good. This is the first time after a million Civic type r videos that I learn about the exhaust and muffler system. Thank you, Alanis!
Omg! Thank you so much for saying this!
When I first saw the black rear seats, I found that to be really annoying cost-cutting. Although it probably is cost-cutting, I do think it actually looks good and lets the red accents and sporty, quality front seats stand out when you're looking at the car from the outside. Also, it might be too much red if those were also red. Red interiors tend to look better when there is a good balance of black/red/other colors or materials to contrast with.
You’re so right! I thought the exact same thing at first
Just here to make you all aware of the Civic Type R, SuperGT GT500 car that is making its debut this weekend racing over in Japan replacing the NSX, thing looks insane
🤠🤠🤠
Just got a base civic sport with the 2.0 and it’s not bad! Handles fairly well and is decently quick at lower speeds
LOVE that. I've always found that I enjoy Camry handling too. The normal cars are fun!
I’ve been waiting for this video
🤠
Great review! Watch those audio channel levels, y'all. The music is great, but it's fighting with Alanis' levels here.
Thanks for the feedback : )
My report card for this video is A++
Ahhhh thank you!
nice job and thank you, I want this car! But it looks like you're sitting way too close to the steering wheel!
I sit closer than I should in street driving sometimes! I sit where I’m supposed to on track 🤠
Thanks for watching!
background music was a bit overpowering at times. still a fan and love the reviews.
Thank you so much! We will def work on that : )
Nice job! Cars and Bids who?!?!?!
🤠🤠🤠
All of your comments rock. Thanks for watching the video.
Question: If you watched this and my recent GR Corolla video, which one are you favoring?
I'll always be a Honda lover, but I actually prefer the looks of the Corolla. I find it very cute, while the Civic looks like a huge sedan.
For a GR or R, I guess I would take the Civic, since #1 its more sleepery #2 I love Hondas and #3 better engine imo. For a base model I would prefer the Corolla cause it's much more cute. 🐱
Video wise I prefer this video, loved the part with you comparing the white to different objects.
Recommendation for other videos is to have the music volume a little lower and the voice-over a little higher.
We’ll def discuss it! Thanks 🤠
It was this or the GR Corolla Circuit and the hand brake was the deciding factor. GR for the win!
SUCH a good car. Enjoy it!
Alanis, where can I get an autographed copy of your book? 📖
Hi again Francisco! Want to send me an email to see what I can do? talktoalanis@gmail.com
@@AlanisKing, email sent!😁
When you whipped out that book I just knew it was gonna be Racing With Rich Energy, and it was not a disappointment. And your husband is doing a fantastic job of editing these videos
Ahahaha! Thank you so much. I’ll tell him 🤠
It would be nice if your final score should include reliability and maintenance
That’s a good idea, but unfortunately I only have the car for a week (and new cars experience new issues over the years)!
Does it feel like it has VTEC? Or is the power delivery very linear?
Feels VERY linear to me
@@AlanisKing thanks!
No. These turbo engines are not high revving like the old cars.
Revs up to 7K. Keeps pulling up to redline, unlike many turbo engines out there that feel tired after 5K.
45k for a civic is damn mandela effect.
You had me at “book paper” …
Thanks for a solid in-depth, informative and fun review of the benchmark Hot Hatch!
I’m a Hyundai N fan myself but even I realize that THIS is the car they are compared too … and GR Corolla is compared to this as well.
And I agree with the gaudy looks of the previous as I like the gaudy JDM mech-looking car more than the mature version of this generation.
Quick question, what’s the price point where you start getting performance in a vehicle that isn’t plastic-y on the inside?
I have no issues with the plastic-fantastic of the entire hot hatch market of vehicles even at my still car-immature age of 55 🤣
Thanks for a great way to spend 30 minutes this morning.
Aw! Thank you so much for this. I really appreciate you watching.
Price point for less plastic is an interesting question. Honestly, you get piano black on some really expensive cars - some Bentleys have it. The LC 500 ($100,000) is one of my favorite interiors ever, and has no bad materials
Like the Civics of old, the Elantra N grows on you. My 2023 6MT EN has 57000km of daily driving in the city (rideshare). For outright performance, after seeing what the EN can do, I would not give the nod to the Type-R. It's limits is always a surprising.
The gear shifts are too close together, Hmm
Beautiful car but do you save $10-20k and get an Elantra N? 98% of this car for 30% cheaper
There is one problem with your statement.
Your head will constantly remind you that the car you pick is inferior than the CTR.
I like the Elantra N but haven’t driven one recently, so I don’t want to give a definitive answer!
Fun fact - every time a reviewer mentions the gear shift being hot or cold a Honda engineer gets a migraine.
Hahahaha
Would be better with less or quieter music, just my opinion. It makes it hard to hear what your saying.
Thanks for the feedback! We’re def discussing it
ughhh, I miss the DRS podcast so much ;(
Me too 🥲
Personally i would pick the Type R over the GR.
The GR is pretty good especially the Circuit trim but if you have family, isn't a good option. Too small.
Agree on Type R being better for a family
Is this a GR Corolla alternative?
Yes, that's discussed at the end!
Parted ways with Doug Demuro?
I am no longer there, yeah! New job coming very soon though
@@AlanisKing Top Gear with Rob Dahm would be nice
Is it just me that feels the front doesn’t match the rear end? I think the front looks elegant and matured while the rear end looks dopey and saggy. In my opinion they should have gave it the SI rear end to match the front.
Honestly, I can see it! You’re not wrong
Next video... a bit of Daft Punk!
Ooooh
The American perspective is funny for this car. The previous version was a 'silly little hot hatch.' In Europe it isn't all that little, so the over-the-top looks make a really ostentatious mid-sized car, nothing cute about it at all.
American cars are def huge
Nice car. But it's no Kia Carnival thats for sure
It’s NO Kia Carnival
Your so gorgeous with that car
pls re upload with quieter music or no music. I can barely hear you.
I can't reupload, but hope you enjoyed the video! Appreciate the feedback
@@AlanisKing I did enjoy it, watched it in its entirety.
One should always keep driving gloves in a sporty car!
Hahaha
If you can find one for MSRP it's not a bad value, but that doesn't mean it's a good value. I don't know why idiots pay more than $50k before taxes and fees for a Civic.
It’s not a terrible value! But you’re right - value depends on the person, and $50,000+ is not for everyone
Could someone please turn down the music? I'm trying to listen to this car review.
Thanks for watching 🤠 we’ll discuss music levels!
That interior might be too much red. Or too bright red. Or both
Hahahahaha I love it, but I love loud things
I swear those 3 exhaust tips always get me😂
I think they're cute actually
The grille😢
11:19 I’m willing to bet you could fit TWO Alaniseses in there. I love the classical music choices. Very pinky out.
You probably could! Thank you : )
Have fun with MASSIVE torque steer, hold on tight. Or the ditch will be in sight
It certainly does steer in relation to the torque, huh
@AlanisKing I owned a Ford st. I found out quick, what that meant lol
The answer to the video title is NO. Just like the Integra Type S, the Fl5 Type R offers less performance than the Fk8, for a pretty significant price increase. If you want value, buy an Fk8 or a Hyundai or something.
The FK8 rocks!
The only problem this car has for an American market is
It’s a stick shift
So no one is going to buy it
Because you need two hands to drive it
So you can’t hold a burger and fries
Man, I just do not like Honda's exterior designs anymore on their cars..... they've lost their way since the early 2000's. Back then, their design just look 'right' every which angle you look at them, everything had a nice flow to it and doesn't look out of place, and they are thee ONLY car manufacturer that can do it and hit it outta the park, from NSX to CR-V...... ALL of their vehicles. Nowadays, it's just a complete mess of mish mash designs that makes absolutely no sense ; weird curve lines, random 'slash' mark designs with no rhyme or reason to it other than to look futuristic and updated..... it's like they just ran outta ideas. If you put a Ford Taurus badge on this car and show it to the masses, they would call it ugly but since it's a Type R, everyone is acting like it's the hottest thing in town (mainly the youngsterz). I mean, look at that profile..... it looks like a damn bottlenose dolphin. Ranting and venting here because I'm a diehard Honda guy (and not in the Fast n' Furious kinda way too, mind you). And do you even know who 'SENNA' is, girl? Don't test me!!
Why would I not know who Senna is?
Pleeeease....use Vivaldis Summer "presto" from the Four seasons in an intro!!
I just put in a request with my husband!
He says: "We used it in our NASCAR spotting video and will use it in a review for you soon"
@@AlanisKing that honestly made my day!! Thank you!

Agreed. Alanis brings a warmth to her reviews that Doug doesn’t.
Never heard of a fart can exhaust. LOL
Omg! I love that phrase
No, its not worth. Now lets watch the video.

Paying above MSRP is financially dumb unless you are a multi-millionaire. Actually, it's dumb, period.
Above MSRP on anything is difficult
