- Jonesboro Police K9 Gabo didn't hesitate when he was needed to bring to an end an hours-long standoff with an armed suspect, but his devotion to his job left him fighting for his life after being shot five times. What could have been a tragedy wound up a miracle, as Gabo walked away from the shooting, thanks to his bulletproof vest, which was provided by nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s. Months later, he and Sandy Marcal, the woman behind the nonprofit, finally got to meet. #InsideEdition

My friend was a dog handler in the Army, his dog is a german shepard (I’m an Army Engineer, veteran) his dog got shot twice saving him from getting shot and yes he did make it alive. After all that, his dog retired so he took the dog for adoption and he’s always thankful that he was there. After seeing this, I always thought of the day his dog got shot and it hurts me. Everyone in our squad were hurt that he got shot, thankful he made it. This officer’s K-9 was saved by his vest and I’m glad he’s okay, I’m glad the officer is okay too but emotionally, I’m torn with him

I'm bawling my eyes out knowing that a dog was hurt. I read the title again to make sure it's a happy ending coz otherwise I wouldn't have been able to take it. I've watched many crime documentaries and I feel really bad for the victims and their families, but it's something about animals, especially dogs, that it's just unbearable if anything bad happens to them. The perp was another level of insane to have pulled the trigger on a dog. That officer has immense love for his K9 partner, and the fearless dog did what he had to do to protect the society and I'm so happy he recovered well. We should do everything possible to keep the K9 officers safe. Big thanks to the people who helped with the bulletproof vests.

I tried to adopt a GSD. Beautiful dog. I couldn't contain him. He needed more exercise than I could help him with. Cried my eyes out to give him up.

Any time l hear about these stories l cry because of how loyal the dog is to it’s job and just how heart breaking it is.
I never realized {before this story}, how devastating that tortured moment is, for the handler, to have to send their deeply loved dog to their potential death. If I were one and my dog didnt make it, the sad internalized guilt would live with me for the rest of my life :'-( God Bless these guys.

nooooooo....I was about to look up how he is doing and if he's still around and then saw your post.....so sad...I see the shooting was in Dec of 2018...so he was only alive a little more than a year later....so sad to hear this....but at least he survived that trauma of a shooting and his owner still had him another year before he passed.....May Gabo rest in peace eternal..my condolences to his owner and family and all at the police station.....He now has his K9 doggy angel wings and is looking over his family....

I have just lost my 11 1/2 year old German Shepherd to cancer so I understand just how distraught this poor K9’s handler was feeling. Even though it was his job this K9 is a hero, I’m so glad he is loved and so sobs glad he was wearing a vest. Bless you both
