    I totally agree. I am a new pipe smoker also a new subscriber to the channel. I can already share an experience with one pipe tobacco. I bought a pouch of Friesche Heeren-baai 40gr the first half of the pouch was great but I had a lot of trouble finishing the second half of the pouch. And ended up deciding not to buy it again for a while.
    I’m in The Netherlands so for us buying the average of 50gr of pipe tobacco costs € 21.60. So if you just buy locally you can really spend a lot of money quick. I like trying new stuff so to make sure it’s not going to cost me a lot I’ve decided to make a trip over the border to Germany where pipe tobaccos are still affordable. I’ll be making this trip every couple of months and I’ll pick up what I’d like to try.
    I certainly agree you need to finish a tin to make sure you like something. But I also just want to try a lot of different things.
    I love the ritual of pipe smoking rubbing out the tobacco if I need to packing a pipe lighting it and trying to smoke it as slow as I can.
    Great channel I look forward to watching more videos.

    I gave up tobacco in 2008 due to my employer going tobacco free and penalizing use with a health insurance add on. When I retired at the end of 2021, I immediately ordered some pipe tobacco (Cult Profile). At the time I owned two pipes, a meerschaum and a cheap briar. I went to visit my sister and my brother-in-law gifted me with 2 Luigi Vipratis and ameerschaum. I’m back!

    When I first got started, I bought several bulk blends at the local b&m. One in particular that I didn't like was called English Luxus. I thought it smelled like burning tires and tasted like burning wires. Now, many years later, I bought another two ounces, as it was the only non-aromatic they had. It's so good that I went back a couple of days later and bought 4 more ounces. Don't know if my tastes changed that much or if it was just a bad batch that first time around. I'm glad I gave it another chance.

    • @hobbitonpiper
      @hobbitonpiper  4 місяці тому

      Revisiting blends is such an important part of the journey! Your tastes may indeed change, blends themselves will change over time (often for the better) when stored properly, and you may have simply judged a blend way too soon after an initial bowl or two. More thoughts here!:

    Such good words of wisdom here. There are so many blends out there that yes, it can be overwhelming yet also exciting. So far I have tried a black cherry blend from my local tobacconist (Casablanca) as well as a vanilla cream, one of my favorite to date and great for daytime and mid day smoking. A cherry from Captain black that I really enjoy for the flavor and how well it burns. It did give me a bit of tongue bite at first but I think I was smoking it to quick. I recently picked up a black and gold blend titled the Casablenda, Casablancas house blend. It is good but I think it needs some time and revisiting to grow on me. Currently I’ve really just been enjoying the aromatic blends with flavors like the vanilla cream and the cherries I like to smoke at night.
    In any event I look forward to trying more things as time goes on and continuing this journey of new things.

I still have a few tins that I need to try but as you said "only buy tins" is the best thing to do. Sometimes a blend tastes better then other times but I know what taste of blend I would like to smoke before filling up the pipe. New subscriber here from Minnesota, and that was excellent advice all around! Since you asked, today I'm smoking some Cornell & Diehl Autumn Evening in a Savinelli 401 churchwarden. =)
    I've been smoking pipes for about a year now, just picking up 1 oz bulk samples or 2 oz tins of anything I wanted to try, and after accumulating a cellar of around 30 Ball canning jars (all with different blends in them) I think I'm starting to get a pretty good idea of what I like and don't like. I started off with a variety of wet and goopy Sutliff aromatics, which I mostly liked the taste of but found difficult to keep lit and sorely lacking in the Vitamin N department; and being a pack a day cigarette smoker for 20 years I do enjoy me some Vitamin N!
    From there I branched out and tried half a dozen English blends, some Burley forward blends, a couple pure Virginias and VaBurs, and another half a dozen VaPers. What I've learned so far this past year is that I enjoy darker Virginia forward blends the most, but feel like they need a little something extra to mellow out the acidity. Lots of pipe smokers seem to find Virginias to be sweet, but they always hit my tongue as rather acidic.
    So, my most frequent smokes have become the aforementioned C&D Autumn Evening, C&D's Briar Fox, and Peterson Elizabethan Mixture. They're all different in their flavor profiles, but similar in that they take a nice dry Virginia forward smoke and mellow it out with something else. A delicate amount of maple topping in the case of Autumn Evening, nutty earthy Burley in the Briar Fox, and a bit of Perique in addition to the dark bready flavor from whatever particular varieties of Virginia are used in Elizabethan Mixture.
    That's where I'm at in my pipe smoking journey at this point, but I'm sure there's still plenty more blends and new flavors to discover in my future! I'd especially love to discover some more Virginia forward aromatics like Autumn Evening, where the tobacco is nice and dry rather than wet and goopy like most aromatics and the natural flavors of the Virginia tobaccos are accentuated by the toppings rather than covered up by them. Any recommendations?

    i have never even thought about this before, i do not have "a blend" for me pipes are the same as drinking, sometimes i want to have whiskey, sometimes i want to sit down with a small glass of rum(in winter i like a little rum in my coffee sometimes too) i do the same thing with pipes and tobacco, or i guess i do this with everything, i dont have a favorite anything i have a favorite "today" today i might want a fruity wet tobacco, and tomorrow i may want english, i just assumed everyone was like that i guess, i started out just trying one of everything, i seem to lean more on the cherry, and fruity kinds, but not just one brand, actually i have them in jars and some of them i cant even remember what they were anymore. just a random mason jam jar with tobacco in it

    My question is, “ Does your sense of taste get better overtime?“ I only have one tobacco so far that I can taste anything other than just generic tobacco smell. You seem to be able to taste 10 different things in each one, and I have trouble tasting anything other than just Burnt tobacco taste. Be blessed my friend. John.

    • @hobbitonpiper
      @hobbitonpiper  Рік тому

      Hi John, tasting abilities vary from person to person just like sense of smell, hearing or sight. Some are blessed with a more refined palate than others. There are things you can do, however, to maximize your personal taste experience….let me ponder that and perhaps I’ll make a video on the subject down the road. For now, latch on to the blends that do taste good to you, and remember never to smoke too fast, and don’t smoke tobacco that’s too dry. And yes, your tasting abilities can absolute improve over time with proper techniques and experience.

    i keep a notebook and record a blend's component tobaccos and then score them, I soon found out which to seek out and which to me are best avoided. I keep in jars those I tried and didn't like and occasionally go back and try again and certainly one or two l do now have more time for definitely.

    Hi Kevin! Great vid as usual, and very relaxing after a relatively crazy day. To go with the crazy, I'm now smoking 2 pipes at the same time, with 2 vastly different blends....working on tasting the differences and also just enjoying 2 different flavors. One is an IMP Meer filled with Newminster 400 Superior Navy Flake, and the other is a Castello Shape 55 Sea Rock briar filled with C&D Folklore. Two very different blends. Slow, contemplative sips from one or the other. Probably won't finish either today, but pipes to keep....the theory of delayed gratification is strong with pipes which, unlike cigars, can wait for another time. As usual, your advice is excellent........slowing down, contemplating, finding what you like and relighting as necessary!

    Sound advice. I love your channel. Wish you made this in 2017 when I began my pipe journey. Not naming names but back then I listened to way too many presenters and bought into their preferences instead of my own. Then, in 2018, the McNeils closed up shop with McClelland. And the crap hit the fan and everyone panicked. “Pack your cellars now!” The FDA regulations were another threat. “Pipe tobacco will never be more available and cheaper than it is now, so cellar deep.” And some of that was very true. Regardless, I was more concerned with the favorite blends of presenters than what was for me (after all, I was new to the game). The end result was a lot of money spent on blends that I could easily live without and regrets that I wish I spent on blends that I truly love. Take heed, new pipe smokers! Don’t obsess about what lots of popular YTPC presenters think. They aren’t paying your bills and managing your money. You do you.

    What do you prefer about pipes over cigars?

    • @hobbitonpiper
      @hobbitonpiper  Рік тому +1

      I love both. Smoking a cigar is a mindless activity compared to the art of pipe smoking, which can be considered a pro or a con depending on your perspective or mood. Pipe smoking takes patience and talent. Cigars are insanely expensive per smoke, so the affordability of pipe smoking is exceptional in comparison, even when you factor in buying a pipe. There’s a meditative contemplation level I achieve with a pipe that I haven’t experienced with a cigar, and the bright leaf flavors that virginia leaf provides just can’t be properly duplicated with cigars. Cigar leaf, however, is some of the best tobacco in the planet, no doubt. There’s room in my life for both. :)

    Love your channel! We retired 2 years ago to River Valley AR. After being a cigar smoker for over 40 years, I found I was reluctant to dedicate 1-2 hours for a smoke. I tired of fussing with my humidor to keep from spoiling hundreds of dollars worth of high-end sticks. I liked the idea that pipe was somewhat less abrasive than a double maduro churchill to the people around me. I've been a piper know for a few weeks and have found a lot of good info on youtube. I sat down to a morning bowl today and pulled up youtube on my mancave TV as usual. I picked this video and learned more just watching you smoke and tend your bowl while talking than any other 3 videos out there. At this point I have a cheap corn cob, a Chinese amazon churchwarden that I mainly bought for the included accessories, and a Dr. Grabo grand duke that I was lucky enough to find in our local small-town tobacco store. I have a couple of aromatic blends I bought at a shop in Russellville, but saw a video on ghosting which caused me to smoke only Sir Walter Raleigh in my Dr. Grabo until I get a good char cake. Thanks for your informative videos, and kick back teaching cadence. I'm subscribed.

    Best video yet Kevin. I prefer the old codger tobacco best. I am amazed at how the tobacco plant is misunderstood. The top leaves taste different than the middle leaves which taste very different than the bottom leaves. Also how some think cherry 🍒 or plum is added to tobacco when it's glycol. There are natural tastes like mint or deer's tongue but those are a minority. I'll stick with old Carter Hall or Sir Walter Raleigh or Velvet. If I chose to spice it up I will add Perique. As far as cellaring, I have enough tobacco to last me the rest of my life. Keep doing what you are doing. With the number of subscribers you have, you are doing something right. 💨💨

    I love your advice on actually finishing a tin and living with it for awhile before moving on. I just finished my first year on my pipe tobacco journey and I can't tell you how many 1oz-2oz bulks or single tins I've bought only to have a couple bowls and then move onto the next shiny thing or new blend to sample. I've only recently started to slow down and spend time honing in on what I like and get myself out of the "try everything" phase. I have so much guilt for all the tins or tiny bags of tobacco just waiting around not being used. Like you said, this should be about slowing down. I was in such a rush to try it all I'm not sure I even processed what I did or didn't like. But we're getting there. It's all about growth and learning. At least I know with all these samples I won't need to order anything for awhile!
    EDIT: I will say though, I keep going back to my tin of Haunted Bookshop for a bowl every few months, but man, I cannot find the joy in that one. I keep reading how it's one that needs to sit to grow on you, but that might be the one desert island blend that eludes me.

    Afternoon. I’m smoking MB Scottish Blend in a Savinelli Phoenix 106. I’m trying pipe smoking again ( for the 3rd time). Your advice is spot on. I have a large list of blends I tried once and put away. I was trying to find that perfect blend in just a couple of bowls. Now, I’ve started a journal. A page for each pipe and a page for each blend. I write on the pipe page what I smoked and how it smoked. I write on the blend page what pipe I smoked it in and the pros / cons of the the blend. A big aha moment was when I realized a certain pipe got hot regardless of the blend I smoked in it. I thought it was the blend (not thinking it could be the pipe), and never tried it in another pipe. I’ve learned more in the last three months than I have in the last three years by keeping a journal.

    Very good points. Even as an experienced pipe smoker I still like to listen to other people's opinions. As a European pipe smoker, my choice of tobaccos is a bit more tricky due to EU regulations, especially the prohibition of international shipping. However, I do like to try out as many blends as I can because my tastes can always develop. Like many others I'm sure, I have some favorites and spares or alternatives based on availability. For example, I love Full Virginia Flake and if I'm lucky enough to find it, then great. If not, then I have no qualms to settle on Amphora Virginia (these are the only straight VAs available in my country).
    I am also not afraid to try out clones, as sometimes those hold on quite a few surprises. It's a good thing that we have those because you love a certain pipe blend, but you find out that it's not available in one country or another. You try out the clone and you realize that there's very little, if any difference between that and the original. It's so wonderful that we live in this day and age where pipe smokers have so many options.

    Smoking "Country Squire - Old Toby" in a MM Country Gentleman. Total newb here, but with the help of pipers like you, Muttonchop, and Pipe Cottage, I'm learning quickly. I've purchased a dozen or so tins of assorted blends. Both aromatic and non. Being a Tolkien fan like yourself, I have gravitated towards that theme. Thanks.
