- Sung in German as "Lieblicher Mond" by the great Emmy Destin (Ema Destinnová), Dvořák's famous aria from Rusalka originally in Czech as "Měsíčku na nebi hlubokém". This 1916 recording is very well preserved on this later pressing made in England. The label has a sticker saying it was made for the Radio Corporation of America. That sticker is new to me and proves very interesting.
It is somewhat odd that Emmy Destin recorded this in German as she was indeed Czech. But, I imagine the opera was mostly sung in German at the time. It fell out of favor for a number of years. But starting in the late 80s with the successes of Renée Fleming bringing it back, it is now done in nearly all opera houses around the world and now always in Czech.
One of the huge credits to Emmy Destin at the Metropolitan Opera house in New York is the 1910 world premier of Puccini's La Fanciulla del West (The Girl of the Golden West). She and Enrico Caruso stared in this very successful production.
Ravishing in every way.
Her singing voice is out of this world and is a paramount gift to Rusalka lovers
So simply and directly sung, divorced of excessive, sticky sentimentality. Perfect.
Прекрасное пение, великолепный голос.
A truly great Dramatic soprano!
Nice 👌

Thank you for another connoisseur’s recording! Slavic sopranos aren’t to everyone’s taste, their schooling seemed to favour a hard, metallic upper range. I don’t find that true in Destinnová’s voice. Not employed in this lullaby, she had ringing top notes. In more recent times Slovak soprano Gabriela Benačková reminded me of Destinn.
Just remember Destinn had one of the best developed voices ever…
Her clarity and registration is beyond heavenly.
Not even close. Destinn was anything but a typical hideous Slav 'soprano' or 'mezzo' ; her production and tone were entirely Italianate (which is to say CORRECT) singing, and in fact she was most celebrated in Verdi. Benackova was just another mediocre hack.
Fuck off, you haven't got a clue.@@genlyai5055
