Awesome! Reclaimed about 20% of my memory. Made me a bit nervous on the reboot; it took a little longer than usual, but everything eventually started up fine. Thanks so much for showing such an obscure solution.
If any of you have the same problem and couldn't get this video to work, I found out all I had to do to fix mine was hit restart then press and hold the power key while it was restarting to force shut down. The best way to know if your computer booted up correctly afterwards is to turn off 'Connect automatically' for your favorite wi-fi. If it relaunches still connected, dwm will give you problems after about an hour. If it's disconnected, just reconnect to your wifi manually (you won't have to re-input password) and enjoy not worrying about dwm giving you problems again until you shut your computer off the next time. This also helped with my issue of an extreme lag spike when streaming videos on Discord.
Apparently when updating from 10 to 11. Windows update and store get corrupted making alot of drivers not being available for the new release and will show "You're up to date". Alleviate this issue by re-installing Chipset/LAN/GPU first from the manufacturers website ASUS/Intel etc but do not install performance enhancers just yet like AI Suite or Armoury Crate just yet. Do not install the windows update version for realtek as this will conflict with the newer drivers leaving broken pathways to the correct folders in the registry that may/will cause sound issues and/or device encoding errors. I am currently on 22H2 where I have to change process priority in task manager to eliminate DWM usage change to single window processes as Win 11 mainly uses all background being part of this new 'User Experience' (You don't need this) to increase app start-up times, history and prediction usage which is pretty much a new name and simplified version to 'Prefetch' and the system indexing service (you don't need if on SSD aswell) thus said, indexing and previous version history is a main cause of explorer 'hangs' as every app is constantly checked through the background service DWM (Everything goes through this now) and updated but is not able to 'Predict' the new changes due to firewall rules, UAC settings and your TPM security through the setting 'App and Browser Control' as this is a 'Touch-and-go' basis where it will allow some changes buit not all leaving your new app with missing locations/files. So when you are scrolling through explorer and click on the folder you want to go to, Windows attempted change was halted in the background but re-started now that you have clicked on it sending explorer and DWM into over-drive making the processes go through a CRC but that notification error pop-up was disabled (through this 'New User Experience' update) thinking this new process would 'fix itself' but instead making your PC 'Freeze' as it goes through this loop for ages creating the process priority on all other apps to be lowered as the default for DWM is 'Above Normal' where it takes control. Even though your PC has 'Frozen', it still has some minimal user controls that MAY work - Depending on the CRC issue and complexity of your system setup.... But this needs patience to prevent losing data! Ctrl Alt Del and END TASK on explorer.exe (both explorer's.exe if you have multiple instances) - Your screen will then just show the wallpaper or a solid colour but DO NOT end task on DWM as your PC will crash corrupting the windows environment settings/paths and is a pain to get back into windows... IF, you can without data loss. Once they are closed, Ctrl Alt Del and Sign out for a temp fix if you want to create a restore point before a restart or select restart from the bottom right instead of ending the task on explorer.exe A side note; Edge is a huge culprit for this with Bing so, in the settings uncheck the setting on 'startup boost' and disable 'running tasks in background'. Also efficiency mode my help on low performance PC's/Laptops. SSD's are designed for quicker response times so all this pre-load stuff is not required within the apps. A high quantity of performance memory (32Gb+ min) and tuned with an XMP is worth looking into that can help prevent these issues too as clearing memory dumps can fix a lot of common 'High usage' errors. Sorry for the long post but wanted to try and simplify a worded version even though there are heaps more causes to this issue. Your vid was good. Also, instead of the long way doing Win+R for Dev Manager, just right-click on the start button and you will have all your options there. Task Manager is there too :) Or make a shortcut on desktop for both. Best to use regedit with admin privs too which you can get through clicking on search in taskbar for regedit and right click on the app result to 'Run As Administrator'.
This works fine. Well I kinda did a physical upgrade which was I switched over to SSD (Problem was continued) and i guess cuz of that I didn't had any problems with starting windows up Good one

I'm disappointed, I had gotten so disgusted with windows and it's desktop manager that I had decided to upgrade to a Mac Mini and leave microsoft behind but I used your techniques and 48 hours later desktop manager is still behaving. Oh well, I'm sure microsoft will screw something up sooner or later and I'll have that excuse to go Apple. Update: desktop windows manager is back at it. It took a couple of days, this morning it took about 4 hours from startup before it started and then memory usage quickly ramped up from less than 50Mb to 3 Gb over a period of less than 1/2 hour. I'm back looking at Mac Mini's.
Update 2: 10 days and desktop windows manager is behaving, the highest I've seen is 110 MB but it returns to 35-50. I haven't done anything else so this works. Thank you.
@@freeeggs3811 Desktop manager has been behaving itself for the past 3-4 months but I can't say what 'fixed' it. The changes made following instructions in this video are still in place. They never stopped the high usage completely they did help slow the frequency of occurrence. My computer is a Dell so I've had several upgrades from Dell as well as several Windows updates so I can't tell which one or combination of the three has 'fixed' my problem but for now 'fingers crossed'.
Hi, your steps unfortunately did not work for me :( My symptom basically is that DWM always starts low after a reboot and then gets over 3Gb after several hours. The only way to bring it down is another reboot. I note that the final step re: screensaver did not apply to me, as it was already set to :"none." The early steps didn't apply either. Thanks.
Did you check if your camera is connected properly and did you check camera settings for windows. If you have a newer laptop. They have a button on the keyboard that physically disables the camera and blocks the lens, so when you open the camera app it will say there is no camera detected.

Hello there, i did all of the steps and k am restarting it but it has been upwards of 20 minutes and it is still restarting
had the same issue. one of the steps stopped the computer from restarting properly. im guessing its one of the changes in the registry.

Tried all of this and it's still showing 100% CPU utilization.
I ended up replacing the ram and for some reason that solved the issue.
