I'm sure a lot of that will involve the growth of streaming services which has caused MST3k to never truly die or go away and continue to be seen for new generations of fans. No doubt we could get info on the Kickstarter campaigns, maybe even the success of Rifftrax and other projects like Cinematic Titanic. And the casting of Jonah Ray, Felicia Day and Oswald Patton. Whatever behind the scenes shenanigans that led to the shortened Gauntlet season and the decision by Netflix to not renew the show, and of course the successful campaign to create the Gizmo Plex as the new home for MST3k moving forward.
Thank you for getting this up; I have a lot of great memories of this show and while it took me a while to get on board when Mike took over as host, the SciFi years ended up also being great. Back then, the show felt like a refuge. It's kind of hard to explain to those who have ben fortunate enough to grow up with the internet. All this time later, I still love riff style humor like yours and Brandon Tenold. One of the things I realized watching this retrospective is that just as you make your content with love, really digging into the relationships and history behind the scenes, so did those making MST; it makes me even more nostalgic for my time with them.
I wish I had Netflix but I have no income. Which would also keep me from getting the DVDs but then again Netflix doesn't like releasing their shows on DVD. Strange considering the company started as a mail-away DVD rental service.
@@jadenova So does Shout Factory TV, which is where Tubi gets them from, and the few on Shout Factory's MST3K UA-cam channel (and a bunch of fan uploads that are less legal) or their streams on PlutoTV and Twitch. I even have Diabolique recorded from Sci-fi and a few episodes plus the movie on home video. Rifftrax carries some of the episodes on their site. None of them from the Netflix years as far as I know.
So this was the ultimate fate of a beloved series that both captured my heart and influenced my sense of humour. Pearl's final bit there, "move on, Mike, I have" is telling because so many of us have never really moved on. We might have gone in different directions but we all still, on a subconscious level, toggle that little switch in our brains that says "MST3K" whenever we watch a movie or a TV show. The second something comes up that you can poke fun at, we do without thinking about it. The whole world, in a way, was influenced by MST3K. They deserved so much better, but what a ride they had.
I would agree. So many of us in some way have been raised on MST3K, even if only tangentially. I discovered MST3K after they moved to SciFi Channel, back during my junior year of high school. Although I do recall being somewhat aware of the shows existence when it was on Comedy Central, but never really watched it. It wasn't until the internet and streaming became more prolific that discovering past seasons was even possible. And thanks to Pluto TV, there's an entire channel dedicated to MST3K, which says a lot. My guess for how that came about must've been that at some point, Joel must've been able to get the rights for both business and creative decisions for MST3K out of the hands of Jim Mallon, which could explain a lot of things like the Pluto TV deal, which I'm sure must be raking in serious revenue given its shown on continuous rotation with commercials to keep it free, the MST3K live tour, and the crowd funding thing he was able to do to bring the show to Netflix, and then create the Gizmoplex.
In addition, MST3K was such an inspiration for many of us growing up, the idea of utilizing humor combined with critical analysis in order to target the things that interest us as well as the things that bother us.
That same monkey section of the movie also features a clip from Ultraman: The Adventure Begins, so you can add "Hannah Barbera spinoff of a Japanese live action show that started as a Twilight Zone knockoff made by the same company that did the special effects for Godzilla movies" to that rabbit hole.
For me the show coincides with my enlistment in the USN. It started two years before I went in and ended two years after I got out. Spending a lot of time at sea I had to jump through hoops to watch any of it and it wasn't until a good decade later that I could say I'd watched the whole thing, and certainly not in order. Much like my love of Star Trek and Star Wars I know there is a big fandom, but I've never actually met anyone who shares my love for this... which is weird. MST3K is a little obscure, but you'd think I'd know someone who was into Star Wars or Star Trek. Everyone I know is into reality TV or whatever is trending. Weird. As a result the bits I love about the show were not influenced by the community. For example I think the performance by the actor playing Torgo, in Manos the Hands of Fate, is so wonderful it elevates that entire movie into watchable. I don't really get the "worst movie of all time" from the home made by amateurs "Manos". Red Zone Cuba, Coleman's third film for commercial release, still manages to botch everything Manos does and manages to make the horrific slaughter of freedom fighters into an incomprehensibly boring sleazy slog.
I agree with Chuck that Final Justice should have been the final episode, cuz what they did with Mike thinking it was his time to leave wasn't funny, it was just uncomfortable to sit through. it doesn't make you laugh, just makes you feel sorry for Mike.
God Season 10 was full of bangers. It's a tragedy we never got another few seasons, they were at peak fire at that point. Oh well, we have Rifftrax which will always be the real MST to me, not the terrible Netflix revival series.
I know it's unlikely, but I would love to hear Chuck's thoughts on the Netflix revival seasons.
Same.
Me too.

I'm guessing the writers for the Simpsons saw that Spring Fever short as well, inspiring that zinc-free world filmstrip.
oh hell yeah! Without a doubt!
MST3K will return... some twenty years later on Netflix.

The end of the video still made me tear up even though I had already watched it before. Damm you, Chuck. There's something in my eye... 😕
Was thanks to you and Linkara that I started to appreciate MST3K. Hoping someday you can do the Netflix seasons as well.
Eventually the whole Jonah era
Linkara? More like LOLCOWara
Maybe I missed it, but did Chuck talk about the movie?
"This Island Eaaaaaarth!"
Normal view. Normal View. Normal View! NORMAL VIEWEEWWWW!!!!
How did you leave this comment a year ago when it got posted on youtube on Dec 3rd 2021?
“Is someone recording you at this moment?” LOL!

When you mentioned the “Rabbit hole”, I looked around me after you suggested I was being recorded.
Had no idea Ricardo Montalban was Claudius. It's obvious now.

Thank you chuck!
Diabolic had a cartoon series too, I used to watch it as a kid. Didn't know it had a movie, should've guessed the comic origins though.
My back is currently facing a 2nd-story window, so I seriously had to check to make sure no one was filming me

Wasn’t Jean Claude Gosh Darn one of the Agents in the Matrix?
Thank you Chuck for giving the revival all the attention it deserved.

Now the Netflix seasons?
So..........we ain't covering the Netflix seasons?
You don't make these easy to find.
There's a good reason for that. Gotta go to the website! Remember websites?
