I heard this for the first time in the late 80's when I was about that age as well, eleven. Loved it and almost all of his music then. Especially the docklands concert that was on repeat on the VCR.
JMJ thank you for so much good music you gave to us without reward. May you live a long long healthy life full of happiness. This one in particular touches my soul and makes me feel like heaven.
Without reward, other than all the money from perpetual record sales and concerts of course. I think the old chap was suitably recompensed for his efforts.
Bravo.
The same is true for me - absolutely! I was also born in 1970 and I was impressed by JMJ going to China. I learned about his music by my older brother and I still love this music.
Excellent ! ! !
I am Jean Michel Jarre fan since 1980, I remember on my first Unitra Uvertura Stereo magnetophone Oxigen and Equinoxe, sounds like brain remedy, and soon after, the 3rd and the best (in my opinion), the great MAGNETIC FIELDS, was the only music for me in that days. Concerts in China was the synthesis of all and plus. Best regards to JMJ and Fans!
The scene is also perfect just like the music arrangement. It reminds me to my trip to China in 2011. One of the picts tells about the life in Guilin. Love it
Me too; fan since 1987! Zoolook was the album, after hearing that, I bought every album he released out of my pocket money! Although I listen to tons of music thesedays, I always return to Jarre every now and then.
dave474c You are probably looking for Souvenir de Chine - Jean Michel Jarre Jean Michel Jarre - Souvenirs De Chine It has the sound of clicking cameras.
It’s funny how two of the most influential electronic composers of our time were absolutely at their peak with China-themed albums. The other, a certain Mr. Vangelis Papathanassiou should need no introductions.
I think this music can be divided into five sections: The fishing boat sets sail, sunsets, storm and waves, tired but safe, and return to sail with a good harvest
A Chinese couple performed a version of this at the Southampton Mela on Saturday. It obviously translates slightly differently according to which Chinese dialect is used, as they called Fishing Junks In The Evening, but it was obviously the same piece.
I've listened to Jarre, Vangelis , Kitaro, Jon Anderson & Vangelis , Yes with Jon Anderson since I was a child in the early 1970's . I can still hear in my head "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" , Magnetic Fields, Silk Road, Starship troopers and more. I love it all, then and now. And Kraftwerk, one of the original masters. And correct me if I'm wrong, but does not the music around 03:21 sound like it is from the sound track of Ridley Scott's "BladeRunner"? Awesome, simply awesome. :-)
Why do you think they are alike? BladeRunner is after this, nobody is copy a sound track which nobody knows in China at that time. And this is not composed by Jaree, it exists as a traditional group music in before, Jaree makes it electronical.
It would be interesting to know how Jarre did THIS. Did Jarre listened one Chinese traditional too much? Or actually he made remix of something? Thats a total blend of 2 worlds -- chinese traditional and synthesizers.
I have always wonder who was the person who played the chinese instrument , gu-chang in this piece. It was exceptionally qdone. It is a great honour if his name is revealed. Any idea of who this person is?
I have the old vynil of "The concerts in China", and in the credits appairs the person who plays the Zither (Guzheng). Mrs. Li Meng plays it as an artistic collaboration with the Peking Conservatoire Symphony Orquestra. I hope that answer could be useful for you. Best later than never...

Thankful to the first ape who decided to climb down from the tree. Today we can understand the power and beauty of music in a work like this.
Using synthesizers and traditional chinese instruments he has perfectly captured the essence of China.
My personal feeling is that this is better than the original (traditional ) version.
Yes he has...but listen to the silk and bamboo orchestra version
Oh balderdash, it's perfect just the way it is; he really captures the spirit of China.
The same is true for me - absolutely! I was also born in 1970 and I was impressed by JMJ going to China. I learned about his music by my older brother and I still love this music.
Majestic!!!! Childhood memories right here
Excellent ! ! !
I love this tune it’s so beautiful and unique.
I have always been in love with this music ❤
Listened to this all night though Jarre Fan since 1987.
I love the entire track,,but at 3.10 it takes me to music heaven..❤
Best listened to through headphones in a darkened room and let yourself be drawn in ...
Imagine flying into China for a holiday and this was playing throughout the Arrivals...... It would set you up for your whole holiday!

Perhaps my fave Jarre composition of all time
simply beautiful music. I love it

Great music, I had been a Jarre fan since 1986
This song went through my mind for a whole 2 weeks when I went to China the first time, 11 years ago!
This piece, and "Souvenir of China" are defining the whole album - honorable mention: "Arpeggiator"
I have always loved this since I very first heard it way back then lol
i just love this song!!!
i remember hearing it in the vhs of my baptism!!!!
Merci pour l'audio j'adore
The scene is also perfect just like the music arrangement. It reminds me to my trip to China in 2011. One of the picts tells about the life in Guilin. Love it
( 3:09 - 4:17 ) That part deserves to be the future anthem of China.
Me too; fan since 1987! Zoolook was the album, after hearing that, I bought every album he released out of my pocket money! Although I listen to tons of music thesedays, I always return to Jarre every now and then.

Jeez, what can I say after all those comments... Ever so humble, I admire the last 3 thousends of Chinese music amplified with the JMCG electronics.

Gracias!!!

Top notch!
Thank you very much for posting :)
i love it very much
i like j.m music he is realy a legend
I think this music can be divided into five sections:
The fishing boat sets sail, sunsets, storm and waves, tired but safe, and return to sail with a good harvest
pfffff ! que dire ? ç'est magnifique !
min 2:33 is when magic starts.
Cool. Thanks. :)
master Jarre
Wunderbar !
AH tranquillity. ...
A Chinese couple performed a version of this at the Southampton Mela on Saturday. It obviously translates slightly differently according to which Chinese dialect is used, as they called Fishing Junks In The Evening, but it was obviously the same piece.
I wish I had been there !!!
where are we now with the sequel?

love him since I was young, 80ties, what is young, in eternity, gods? goddesses? ✨️🎏🕎
非常好
@pikuci right from the heart!!!!!! Me too!
'
Does anyone know or have a link to the Chinese junks at sunset track that has the sound of clicking cameras on it?
Did not the Chinese State broadcaster adopt this as their equivalent of BBC's 'Sailing By' soon afterwards?
In a form of a national call signal?
Chicken or egg?? Much of this melody was already centuries old and very much a a Chinese product
Sorry typo or age error Sunset not dawn..
Unitra... that was professional equipment at home!
It would be interesting to know how Jarre did THIS. Did Jarre listened one Chinese traditional too much? Or actually he made remix of something? Thats a total blend of 2 worlds -- chinese traditional and synthesizers.
I heard the Chinese version played on a little instrument by a student in China and it does sound the same...and better !!!
Tuna Chunks at sunset.
naw wait for it ......The Arpegiator
I have always wonder who was the person who played the chinese instrument , gu-chang in this piece. It was exceptionally qdone. It is a great honour if his name is revealed. Any idea of who this person is?
danny lim what's it called? a gu-chang? It sounds similar to a koto.
+tall32guy Koto is Japanese. It should be a guzheng. Basically Guzheng is the origin of Koto.
Kyoko Yonemoto. maybe
I have the old vynil of "The concerts in China", and in the credits appairs the person who plays the Zither (Guzheng). Mrs. Li Meng plays it as an artistic collaboration with the Peking Conservatoire Symphony Orquestra. I hope that answer could be useful for you. Best later than never...
thank you x always late than never is good.
dave 474x...might you mean Souvenir of China?
When Mao died, and Deng Xiaoping got to power, this came to be(j)ing.
This would be *impossible* under Xi Kingpin.
