Changing the Batteries on your Mercedes Smart Key
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- This video is different than the plethora of other videos explaining how to change your Mercedes Smart Key batteries ... because it makes the distinction in the differences between the type of key. Older keys come apart very different than newer keys .... good to know.
My god can we send this man like 50 bucks for this video!!! I wasted so much time watching key fob videos that NEVER said there were different fobs and different ways to replace batteries. You sir just saved me from ripping my fob open out of pure rage. Thank you for this knowledge
EXACTLY!!! No need to send me any money, I have already saved myself 50 bucks by coming back to this video as a reminder every time I need to change the battery. I bought a 2017 GLS a year ago ... I haven't yet tried replacing that battery and wonder if it is like one of the ones I have or it is a whole different design.
Your video just saved me after two hours of being frustrated beyond belief. Every video before this said my key was the pop off one, and I couldn’t not figure it out. Damn near broke my key. Thank you so much for taking the time to show the difference. I appreciate it so much.
So glad you found it helpful. If nothing else, it was a reference video that I frequently return to every time I need to change the batteries.
@@PaulOakesPRO I guessed i should've thought of that. I already changed the battery twice but each time whenever batteries expire i had forgotten how did i open it earlier. So, I always search for an article/ a video to do it. Now I will add this to my favourite for future reference :D. thanks again.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I scratched the hell out of my fob just like you trying to follow other videos. This is the only video that mentioned the correct method for getting access to the batteries. Thank you for saving my sanity.
OMG, yours is the third video I watched, seems third time's the charm. Odd that the old way is so much easier than the new way, maybe Mercedes made it so people would pay dealers to change it. Thank you for the simple instructions.
Glad it was helpful! And, exactly my thought about why Mercedes keeps changing the design. I bought a 2017 GLS a little over a year ago, I still haven't tried to change those batteries yet ... I am wondering if I will discover a third design ...
After 5 wrong videos this method worked for my W219 CLS (2006) key. Thanks a lot !
Thanks, Paul, you're video saved me from destroying my fob…
I get that ... I tore one of mine up pretty bad before I figured it out.
Thanks for taking the time to help people who encountered the same issues as you. You helped me brother. Kudos.
Glad to help! Little things make a big difference!!
Thank you! That really helped. No one else bothered to explain that it's different on 2008s.
Paul - Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have a 2008 Mercedes E350 and yours is the only video I could find on UA-cam (as of this writing anyway) that showed the correct way to open its key fob. Unfortunately, by the time I found your video, I had completely ruined one of the two fobs by trying to open it the incorrect way (removing the back). That left my husband and I with only one fob for the car.
Now six months later, the remaining fob was requiring more pushes to unlock the car and I knew I had to replace the batteries. I remembered your video and pulled it up immediately. Changing the batteries was a breeze. Thanks again!!
So sorry you didn't find the video before destroying one key. I nearly destroyed one, which is what motivated me to post this first video. Then, when I thought I finally discovered the secret to finding the latch that freed the cover, I posted the second video.
Sir. You have embarrassed so-called experts on UA-cam. Following your instructions, I opened my 2009 S550 FOB within seconds while viewing your post. Thank you very much.
The only video that is useful for 2007 cl600 model. We kept trying to open instead of slide watching wrong videos and were going crazy. Many thanks!
Thank you for this. Most of the other youtube videos do not mention the 2008 key sliding mechanism. Excellent.
EXACTLY!!! That was why I made this video.
That was so helpful. I have a 2005, 2007 and 2014 Mercedes and all 3 keys are different! Almost broke my 2007 one thinking it came apart like 2014. Thank you!!!
Skorp Saiyan - LOL, do you ever wonder if those Mercedes engineers sit around and talk about “How can we make this just a little bit different than the past few years’ models ... just to frustrate the crap out of our loyal customers.”?
same here
THANK you Sir!! Watching other videos I actually broke the black cover try to get it off... On my spare key I slide it like you showed... So easy when you know how. Thank you.
Thank you so much!!!! Today is a holiday and can't get anyone on phone!. You saved me worrying on a trip tomorrow. I have a 2016 glc and it worked great.
Why would someone dislike this? This is one of the most informative videos regarding battery changing.
BusMaster99, Thank you for the kind words! If for no other reason, I posted this for my own recall of how each one works when I need to change the batteries. So, if it benefits others, great. Most of the dislikes are because I didn’t address the trick of releasing the latch. But there are so many other videos that address that .... and, I don’t have a tiny camera that could effectively show the latch release.
On the verge of breaking off the black plastic key panel ... your video came on and showed the light...miraculous!
bullsiphoto - LOL, I know the feeling of frustration...
Mr. Oaks, your suggestion is well appreciated ! Good job, Paul ! 😊
Wow this actually saved me. I just watched 20 videos and was going crazy. I'm glad I didn't give up and found this video. Thank you 🙏 ( If you still don't know how to pop the latch in this type, read my reply to this comment for instructions.)
For those of you who still don't know how to release the hatch in this fob type: .The latch is on the narrow side of the fob, opposite of the key entry side. You'll see a little black piece on the inside that moves left and right- and that "button" is opening and closing the latch. I used a tweezer to move the plastic hook/button away from the side wall where the latch is (towards the key entry side) to release the hatch. (The tweezer has one leg inside the fob pushing on this hook/button and the other leg on the outside of the fob, essentially gripping the middle piece I want to remove, at the same time.) The first move with the tweezer is too move the hook towards centre of fob, then I grip my tweezer and pull out the middle piece..almost at the same time. This has to be done in one move because you can't pull the middle piece out without pushing the hook/button at the same time. If you release the pressure of pressing the hook/button, the latch automatically closes up again and you can't slide out the middle piece. This is a great video and saved me, but I couldn't figure out how his middle piece popped out like his. His middle piece is magically popped out somehow and mine didn't work this way at all. I still had work to do!. Maybe mine is STILL a different model than his? ....In any case, posting here in case this helps someone. Good luck!
Glad it helped! Perfect, so glad it made a difference.
Thank you! Your's is the only video that explains that the battery casing slides out rather than popping the back
No problem 👍 So glad it helped.
Paul Oakes, you rock! Thanks for the clear instructions. You are now my friend. 😅
I'm a new owner. My first feel is how tight this go fast small super car makes a smile in your heart .. I have a little back ground in cars..My father held a record for quit a while at the Indy 500 as the oldest driver raceing in 1964 or 5 ...also most consecutive times making the race . Eddy Johnson...He would of loved this semi classy road burner....
Thank you Paul, I spent 2 hours trying to figure out the keys and practically destroyed one of the keys.
I came close to destroying one of mine ... scratched it with my knife trying to figure it out. After trying multiple times ... that was when I had the lightbulb moment, "Why don't I create a video for others ... but also to remind me next time ...".
Thanks buddy, it helped me because i almost spoilt my key by watching the other video's since i have a 2008 w 221
You're welcome! I screwed up one of mine, which was the final straw before I recorded the first video.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. I have a 2008 ML 350 and was just about to the point where I was going to use a sledge hammer to get that thing open. Watched your vid, and it was a breeze.
vinodude1 how was it a breeze if he didn’t even show us how to get the batteries out?
Thank you Sir, I already had the notification of low battery come up in my Merc
This vid points out there is a difference between older MBZ and newer MBZ key fobs. From 2010 and newer, the fob back cover pops off; and 2007 to 2009, the fob end slides out. For each of them, there is a latch that prevents the key fob from coming apart during normal use (two different types of latch). For the newer fob, the latch is up and down, and prevents the back cover to pop up. For the older fob, the latch is towards the side (opposite side where the key ring hole), and prevents the fob end to slide out. You remove the mechanical key, shine a flash light into the slit, and you can see the latch. Use a small flat head screw driver to push on the latch.
For the newer fob, you push the latch and work to pop up the back cover. For the older fob, you push the latch and work to slide out the end. (For the older key fob, there is a thin small ring that pops up, and you can attach your key ring to it, to give you the leverage to pull the fob end out, which pushing on the latch).
THIS comment completed the video thank you!!
thank you for this!!
Great addition, James!
I still could not do it until I watched anoter video:
ua-cam.com/video/T1rxpjceEGQ/v-deo.html
Thank you for sharing. I was just a frustrated like you sir. Your video showing the right way for my S class model. Thank you!
Glad it helped
My positive was on the other side. Don't know how that happened so thank you for showing me how to take the battery out!
Thank you so much for showing the difference. I have a 2008 model and have been trying to remove the back. Now I can replace the batteries.
Glad I could help, Ken.
Thanks for taking the time to make this helpful video
Thank you Paul your guide was very clear we never would have done it alone
Glad it helped. Such simple things can be so frustrating ...
Helped me 5 years later on my 2011 W221 key thanks 😃
Awesome!! Glad it helped!
Thank you for this video
I had both types and i was very frustrated as you mentioned.
Very very helpful!!! I have two separate keys and I was trying to release the latch on both and was becoming very fraustrated!! Many Thanks!
Your video was more informative than all the others!
Thank you, Paul. I have a 2011 E350, and a 2007 E350. I watched 3 videos before I watched yours. Yours is right to the point. Thx. The others start out in slow motion talking..."Hi, (pause) this (pause) is (pause) a (pause) video (pause)... and then meander around irrelevant stuff. I was climbing the wall.
Big help. Thank you. I have a 2008 and have broken one key trying to prise the back off. Now I know it slides out it's really easy.
So glad ... I hated it when I put a big scratch in my key trying to remove it the wrong way.
I have two 2015 models. One c300 on E350. It’s taken me 3 weeks to figure this out 🤦🏾♀️. Thank you for your help
Thanks, this video helped me to open up my Mercedes key fob for 2005 Kompressor 2 door coupe battery used was #2025. Cheers👍 3:24
Thanks for the great video Paul.
My Mercedes-Benz dealership parts department will provide the batteries and change them on the Smart Key Fobs for free for all their customers. They did it for me! 👍 At Mercedes-Benz of Santa Rosa, Santa Rosa, California.
Flak Jack Edd - That is GREAT! That sounds like the kind of service we experienced at Mercedes Benz of Alpharetta, GA. Now that we have moved to Sarasota, Florida we really appreciate and miss the very special way they treated their customers. The Sarasota Mercedes Benz dealer in Sarasota is an AutoNation franchise and the service experience is nothing like what we received in Alpharetta. It is borderline awful. For the first time in 40 years we are considering something besides a Mercedes for our next car.
Thank you -- followed your instructions and was done within a couple of minutes. I was trying to slide it out for my 2008.
Nancy Staalberg - Great, so glad it helped!
Thank you so much. I had the same problems. I bought a replacement Fob and got the other one and I came close to breaking it.
Glad I could help!!
Thank you Paul, for the demonstration.
Great video Paul. Helped me out!
Thank you!! This is the only video that explained how to do this with my fob!!
Glad it helped! I was very frustrated, too. Plus, this is always a good reminder for me when I have to change the batteries. I just bought a new (to me) 2017 GLS 550, so I plan to figure it's keys out and do another video.
Thank's Paul for your tip , yesterdayevening i was very FRUSTREDED , Now I'm OK , Great Tip Have a GREAT Day !!!
Hub Haanen - Thank you, glad it helped. I did it after years of the same frustration. Just last week I went back and watched these to remind me how to do it.
This was so helpful I was fighting with my key for 30 mins per another video I saw for a newer model you just helped me lock my 2008
Trust me, I can relate. I still use my videos as reference when I have to change the batteries.
I am trying to figure out what makes the keys different those are the 2 styles I think keyless go is the difference I have a 04 E55 and a 09 GL450 that have keyless go and the round panic button and those have the the style that the insert slides out. My 07 E350 and my 12 C300 have the triangle panic button, the battery cover and they are not equipped with keyless go. This is a good video because it shows both.
Bill H, thanks for the post. Both of mine are Keyless Go. I have yet to figure out the logic behind Mercedes Benz’s design choices.
After viewing 12 videos yours was helpful! Thank you
Thanks Paul you saved me a bunch of time!
Glad to help!!! So glad you found it useful.
Hi Paul, your video very helpful, I have the old style required the key to slide the hatch with the mechanical key.
Every other video is incorrect. Thank you for the detailed advice. #2009 Mercedes
Thanks sooooo much Paul! I've been trying forever 😅😅😅. Now i can do myself! Saving tons of money
So glad to hear it helped, Lara.
You don’t know nothing then trying to show people how ,it is so much funny
Many thanks ... I have a 2007 W203, run out model, it has the slide out battery like your 2008
I have both, thank you sir. I needed the 2011 one this time
Thank you Paul! You have eliminated a source of frustration for me!
Bebiano Da Silva - So glad it helped! Have a great day.
Thank you, under a minute I replaced the battery, otherwise I would be trying to take cover off too.
This was point on. I have a 2010 S class and the top pulled off instead of the back. Found (2) 2025 batteries
Thank you thank you. You saved my life 🙌🏻
Mine is a 2018 GLA250
So glad it helped!!
Thank Mr. your vid was the most useful
Glad it helped! You are very welcome.
Thank you …. I was frustrated!!!! Thank you for the help
Okay. Figured it out. Hook the handle end of the key alway to the right in the slot and pull it to the left. This unlocks from the side but you have to hold it as you pulled the guts out of the key fob
Right ON ! I have a 2009 E class and this explained it well. Thanks!
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
Paul, you are my god! thx for this video!
Glad to help!
Thank you! I have a 2003 and I was trying to pry the back off. Thanks for the video!
Glad I could help.
Thanks for the help. Mayor! USMC, 1986-90.
You bet! I am glad to help. I know it is old and overused, but I really DO appreciate your service. No one who hasn't served can appreciate the sacrifices you have made.
Thanks Paul. I had trouble with the latch.
Thanks! Made it super easy!!
Thanks so much - I was about to give up after watching other videos describing the process for keys other than the '08.
I realize it's kinda off topic but does anyone know a good place to stream newly released movies online ?
@Hayden Calvin Flixportal =)
@Dominic Alessandro Thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it!!
@Hayden Calvin happy to help :)
Thanks, you saved me time
Glad I could help
This was a lifesaver, thank you!
I am delighted to read that it helped! Best regards.
good video. thanks for your share paul
Thank you for your helpful video ☆☆☆☆☆
You are welcome. Thanks for letting me know you found it helpful.
Finally ! Great explanation.. Thanks !
You're welcome! So glad it helped.
You saved my day and my 2009 MB key probably as well. Thank you.
GREAT!!! That was my intention, Kent.
Thank you, you totally helped me!!
Glad I could help!
Thanks for video I was really struggling this is the best one on you tube 😊
Thanks mate, this is exactly what I was looking for 👍
So grateful for this tutorial! I was making the same mistake
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Paul. I got the 2008 key. I try to release the catch as you mentioned, still could not figure out how :(
Found the way to release the catch from ua-cam.com/video/3jId2ZC_zXY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=PaulOakes. All good now.
So sorry. Was the problem with the original release or sliding the cover off? I didn’t focus on the initial release because there were so many other videos covering that, and because I didn’t have a camera that would show it.
@@PaulOakesPRO Thanks. It is getting less video to open the 2008 key. Just found I attached the wrong link. The correct one I used was ua-cam.com/video/T1rxpjceEGQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MercedesMedic . Thanks
Thank you so much! Very helpful! Was the same for a 2014 E-350
Thank you so much, this worked a treat!!
Great to hear! Glad it helped!!
Great video! Solved my headache. Thanks!
Dude thank you so much. Almost broke my key thinking it was a 2011
Parfanity - So glad it helped!
Good video. I just got a 1999 C280
Glad it helped. There are a ton of videos on changing the battery, but none that pointed out that there were different ways to access the battery once you successfully tripped the clip.
Thank You So Much !! I watched 3 videos and yours was so easy and simple to follow !! Especially how to slide the mechanical key on the left hand side to unhook the little snap so the back comes right off.
I have a 2015 C Class and both keys went out at the same time. I thought I might have to resort to taking my key in to the dealer but your directions were perfect !!! Once again, Thank You ☺️
search for re-learn or programing additional key fob. it's here too.
no need for trip to dealer.
Glad it helped! Thank you for taking the time to express your appreciation.
YOU THE MAN PAUL !! thanks IM 2008 MAN
Very useful, Paul. I needed to pry the slidey-outy bit loose on my 2007 Smart Key with a handy letter opener as I pressed back the inside latch. It wasn't easy but it was do-able.
You'd think they would make it standard, wouldn't you!?
Thank you very much !!! I have both too, and I was suffering !!!!
How to release that latch is the main headache. If you do another video, please show how you did this.
Tom, I recently posted a second video that provided some insights into releasing the latch. I had hoped I solved the puzzle at least for more current Mercedes Benz models, but Robert Lugg says the tip I shared in the second video didn't work for his 2016 ML. Good luck.
If the Normandy coastal defenses were built as securely as these latch mechanisms, we'd all be speaking German right now! This is ridiculous. In any case, thanks for pointing out that similar keys have different latches.
Thanks Paul an essential video that helped me.
God bless you for this video!!! I was just about to go crazy.😂😂😂
Back at you!!!
On my 2006, ML, it is different still. The latch that you need to release is on the side of the FOB. So to open you have to slide not push. The key usage is different too. Don’t use the shaft of the key but instead use the shorter piece like a crowbar.
Thanks for the tip, Robert!!
Wow that made it do easy. Thanks
You bet! Once you know the secret, it is pretty easy.
thank you so much Paul!!! so very helpful 😁
Appreciate your information Paul. Really helpful. Please continue sharing your knowledge and experience so maximum people could get benefit like me. Thank you again!
Thanks, will do!
