Playing 433 against lesser teams, then 343 against bigger teams makes England a ‘smaller team’. I like that England stuck to its guns and played 433. Big nations play a system they believe in. For me the differences should be how defensive or offensive you make the midfield, rather than a back 5!

@@dbmikeyg255 the manager doesn't have a clue mate. 38% win rate as a club manager. Got Middlesborough relegated. Got us relegated in the nations league. Went on an 800 min goal drought before the nations league. He's clueless.
Yes, Southgate's substitutions were completely wrong. He failed to utilise our biggest advantage over France - the depth of our bench. The game was crying out for the likes of Rashford, Grealish or Maddison to come on as soon as we found the equaliser.
And yet he left Maddison on the bench to bring on Mount and replaced Saka that was the top threat to bring on Sterling that missed 2 days of training then he waited so long before he actually brought on his top striker in Rashford. For Southgate, substitutions are for his personal favorites and nothing about tactics. Why not bring on TAA for Walker and Grealish for Bellz when England where going for it at the end
A difficult topic. If players are playing well, any substitution can risk that. For example, I think changing too many players was the main reason Man City melted and lost against Real Madrid in CL Semifinal this year.
Substitutions are made from 60th minute Mr Southgate does on the 85 minute I cannot understand the logic. Besides he takes out Saka whi was causing problems and bring on Sterling...( who flew out and in Qatar)
Exactly. And Carragher was about the substitutions. Yet what's the solution then? As Southgate keeps doing this, failing to make the changes at the vital times. No changes after equalising for over 20 minutes, and when he does its Saka for a recently arrived after a break-in Sterling?! No Rashford until around 80 minutes and Grealish on with seconds to go?! Boggles the mind, and why Southgate is neither an experienced nor an elite level manager. Hence, why many want him out. Is there no one advising him about this? Three tournaments and he has done this. So he either tweaks this or may have to depart. I'd rather he stay as he has put together a cohesive team, but now I'm more ambivalent. Maybe time for Howe or Potter, but please no Argentians that's just another kick in the teeth.
As a French🇫🇷, I really found that England smash us on a tactical level: Mbappé always taken by two players and even when he passed them, there were a last one before the goalkeepers. The organisation of the defense was really great tactics. Moreover your midfielders were on top, good pressing etc. It was just a question of details for a few man( Kane’s missed penalty, Pickford short jump on tchouameni goal, and a great Lloris save). The expected goal without penalty just comfirmed that (1,2 for france against roughly 2,3 for England).
So I found Southgate coaching great. Substitutions are another problem: substitute of both side did not have such an impact. Deschamps said that it was an hard mach to got into for a substitute.
Yeah the problem with the British media is it’s all or nothing. If we won the game, which we could well have done if things felt slightly differently, they’d be painting a whole different picture. They always do it, but it gets them ratings.
@@jaybee4288 It’s not a problem, It’s winning mentality. Playing better then your opponent doesn’t mean you automatically win. It’s calling GIT, Get It Done. That’s all matter you either win it or not. England team could not finish this France B team and it costed us most likely the World Cup (I can see England beat Maroco, Croatia or Argentina). Sad part is the next World cup won’t be easy as it now and we never know which England team it could be next 4 years. This World Cup could be ours but we bottled it and it’s feeling even worse then 2018 when out team was bad and getting outplayed badly.
If the French goal is disallowed for a foul, and Kane scores the penalty the media would be saying what a tactical master class it was defending Mbappe and how it was our greatest performance. Small margins. He made some errors in hindsight - Sterling shouldn’t have been brought back. But nothing glaring beyond that, just didn’t go his way.
Best comment. Saka was the best player.. should not have been taken off. I was shocked at how good England were.. actually playing forwards, retaining possession whilst doing so.. just no pretext job for Saka from the ref. Also there were times some players were afraid to shoot on the edge of the box.
Good managers find a way to win. Maybe not all the time, but damned sure they get it right at least once. Give any top manager that Croatia game in 2018 the Italy game at the Euros and this France game, and they'll get something out of it at least once. Southgate 0/3

I mean I'm no manager obviously so what do i know but the biggest glaring mistake from watching it was him taking off Saka, this kid was the best player on the pitch for us (rice and kane were great too), other than an injury we dont know about why on earth would you take him off I'd love to know, France couldn't deal with him, with a ref who used his eyes he should have had a 2 or 3 bookings for the french just out of their frustration and fouls he took.

I think it is easy to judge after the fact and for the most part I think he did it alright, but I would say that subbing Saka was a mistake. He was causing so many issues.
@@jean-yvesmartin6934 if the opponent insists on fouling you you don’t score from open play. So no shame in that. Just theoretically. Perhaps the first penalty would have been a goal if no foul etc. perhaps the time Kane was fouled in the box. Etc.

He played attacking football yesterday, the game was theirs for the taking and the England players managed to bottle it. There's only so much Gareth can do, the rest are on the players.
Honestly, managing English Team is just very hard because of media pressure; I really hope they can just leave the manager and players to do their job properly. Scrutiny is good, but sometimes, it can be counter-productive. The manager did nothing wrong, they simply lost a match to the world champions.
I completely agree. All the armchair pundits come out with their ''what Gareth should've done'' or ''why did he bring this player on?'' or ''why did he go for 4-3-3?''. Honestly, if England had won (which given how they played, they really should have) everyone would be lauding praise on him today.
Because england is football country. The epl is world most watched league. So there is many media reporting football. Come to malaysia , no people care about football😂
Southgates weaknesses are definitely his tactics or lack of, when we come against the big guns we all find ourselves scratching our heads with Southgates decision making when it really matters. Why was our most threatening player on the day Saka taken off? Why was a man who’s been back and forth Sterling brought on? Why was Grealish brought on in the dying seconds, only to waste our precious time?
Grealish was replaced with stones, it was the last chance, so Southgate sacrificed a defender you donut. He didn't want to mess with the flow of the team, given how aggressive the England team were. When majority of the time, England play defensive (which was the weakest position of the team !) No one has achieved the level consistency that Southgate achieved in England's managerial history.

Southgate wont listen. All season everyone in England has been screaming for him to drop McGuire, he can’t get a game at his own club and Ten Haag wants to sell him, yet he’s the first name on Southgate’s team sheet . He cost us a goal Vs Iran and he was responsible for the Giroud winning goal ! He waited 80 mins to make a sub change, and then he took off Saka, who was our most dangerous player, was making things happen. Replaces him with Stirling who is past his best, sold by Pep for that reason, hasn’t trained all week and has flown Qatar--UK--Qatar instead of training ? Unbelievable ! Brings on Grealish 99th minute…. for what ? Kane never looked like scoring, even from a penalty, yet he gets the full 100 mins…. Maddison & Trent never got a minute, two of the most influential players in the PL
Yes. They gave France too much space in the midfield. I was screaming from the TV about the space they were giving up and that's how Tchouameni scored that screamer.
England played well but the trick worked too. Mbappé was to get player on him. He didn’t care if he was quiet all he wanted was the player to focus on him to close him down so gap was open on the middle for Griezmann and others. The first goal was just that. Now as for the rest England had 2 penalty already we miss our chances but if we look their was also a big push on giroud back in the box that could have cost us. Regardless the French had the same rebuild to do in 2014/16 and went on to win the wolf cup in 18. I think we need to push with our young talent and next is our for sure. This group attitude is the right one not individual as we seen in the past. Well done to Les bleus and I hope they win it.
Hey, can anyone explain to me how it is possible to bench Rashford after he qualified England for the knock out games? I feel like England doesnt know much about football. Benching the best players since 2000. Same with Vardy in 2018...
I think he should have been subbed on earlier but in terms of starters saka and foden are both better players and offer more to build up play for the team. Lets face it if wales had a decent keeper i don’t think rashford gets any goals in that game.
The fact that you still think Bellingham was the best player on the pitch, i.e. over Griezmann who had 2 assists in the game, one of them a beautiful cross, is a typical example of how English journalists/commentators most often overhype their players and underrate others. "Giroud not a top class scorer compared to Kane". "Lloris the weakest link"... Sorry good game. Griezmann was the best on the pitch yesterday by a mile. Bellingham was lucky not to get booked and kept arguing with the ref. Not mature enough for that level yet. But he has great potential for sure.
South Gate messed the Substitution because he should have kept saka on the play more and more pressure will be there France defenders was confused they couldn’t handle saka

@@reddev123 it was hard to be a substitue on that game. Deschamps who made only one substitution(Coman) justified it by saying that in that particular game it was really hard for a substitue player to got into the match.( substitutes from both England and France did not have an impact on the game). It was really a 11 players vs 11 players fight because they were all great players, no special need for substitution. So don’t think it was the Southgate bad choice. I’m sure that if he didn’t have made substitutions, he would have received even more critics.
Nope, we got absolutely ludicrous decisions against us and didn't take enough of the chances we did have. Nobody can use the 'too defensive' excuse this time either, the fact is there's no guaranteed way of winning a match when you want to.
True. Kane didn’t lift it over the keeper .. insisted on using his right foot.. Another time quite early on a player shied from taking an open shot on edge of their area.. But the ref man.. that first goal they got was areal injustice. Should have been a free kick for Saka.. and if nothing else was different we’d have ended 1-1 I’d say.
@@patinho5589 There was no foul on Saka. The English used to mock Italians for supposedly diving and falling at first touch yet they are the master at that. Kane has made emulations amongst his team mates. That pressure applied by Upamecano on Saka happens in every game every weekend and is not always given as a foul. Because it's not a foul. Football is a contact sport and falling as soon as you feel your opponent's breath on your neck, although an English specialty, is not a foul in the laws of the game. Otherwise Giroud would have had 3 penalties in that game. Twice for being pushed in the back. Once for being cuddled by McGuire.

Who brings on more attacking players while you're down with only a few minutes remaining!? No one who is a winner. That's who
I think there was nothing wrong with the formation. France produced two brilliant goals in the right situations. They just keep sensing the right opportunities and then execute with lethal clinicalness. I actually think Rabiot and Tchouameni were the key players yesterday
Southgate has three years experience as a Premier league manager, finishing 12th then 13th before being relegated in the third season due to financial problems depleting the squad.
I had a season ticket in all of them seasons for Middlesbrough. The financial problems came from Southgates overpriced signings. His tactics were woeful. He finished 12th and 13, after we had won a cup, finished 7th 2 seasons in a row, got to a Euro cup final. We had an amazing team, with amazing players and Gareth got rid of half of them and brought in shite. He is a fraud of a manager and is tactically clueless.
Facts…… and even if that wasn’t the truth … just because you’re not a great club manage don’t necessarily mean your not a great international manager (and vice versa ) … for international level it’s more about getting the best out off what your given as you can’t buy a new player in and it’s more like coaching an all star team vibe that’s clobbered together by passports.
Lets get real. Southgate got the England job after the debacle with Big Sam, he was only supposed to be a stop gap but because of decent results against minor opposition and a lack of decent candidates he got the job by default. The 2018 WC saw us with a very easy path to the latter stages, the first decent team we come against Croatia, we lose. Euro 2020, ok we beat Germany but as we have seen the German team are a pale imitation of their former selves, then we lose to a fairly average Italy team in the final. This World Cup, again the same pattern we beat the average teams as soon as we face anyone with a bit of quality we cant do it. Southgate has proved he cant beat the better teams in tournaments. A manager who only has on his CV, relegated Middlesboro should never of been full time England manager. We have great players too, that makes it doubly frustrating,
Employing a non league level manager was the first tactical error made. Literally a team littered with superstars playing at the highest level and the first decent opposition they face they lose. Not a single goal from open play, 2 penalties awarded and still couldn't win 🤦
superstars?? like who?? England don't have any world class players. They're all decent players propped up to look good by vastly superior foreign players in the premier league.

80mins to make his first Sub... taking off England's best player in Saka...bringing on Sterling before Rashford (especially given he'd been travelling)... giving Grealish 30 seconds... Criminal decisions made by Southgate.
Bring off Saka was stupid. I’d never seen England play so well in my life till then. Making the subs ruined the entire flow and collective decision making they were doing which was the key. = passing forwards not sideways.. having a go at the France defence, but also restraining possession at the same time. It was brilliant.

Everyone has lauded Kane but tbh I thought he was average at best this tournament despite his penalty miss. I truly believe if we had Toney playing he would have done everything Kane did in that game and would have scored. Think we need to move away from him as the captain and main man tbh. Otherwise Foden, Bellingham are only going to grow as players, others Like Maguire will eventually be replaced as Tomori gets better and better. We are set up for the future and Southgate deserves to continue and prove himself.
"Grinding out a result" is what England has done for the last 50 years -- how's that worked out for them? I'd rather they play bravely and lose like they did yesterday than play meek, boring football and inevitably lose on penalties.
The tactics England got wrong: a) the manager, b) the team, c) the virtue signalling, d) going in the first place, e) gross exaggeration of a bad track record (i.e. every time they pay any team with ability, they lose). Surprised? No.
It's laughable that they still trying to put a positive spin on Southgate. There's enough sample size now to see he's not good enough to get this team over the line. Bet the FA will waist at least one more tournament just to be sure. Ridiculous. The standard should be winning the cup not playing well in the quarters.
Southgate needs to go, silly English media and patriotism is the only reason he’s still in the Job. We already lost out on a World Cup final and a Euros win because of him... and now against France when we finally play well because of the quality of our players, he still choses to make stupidly late changes and doesn’t allow our amazing players to press high

I just thought that letting Kane take both penalties was a tactical disadvantage to his own team. With a second kicker at least the keeper would had to guess. But with Kane kicking it he was second guessing himself.

A difficult topic. If players are playing well, any substitution can risk that. For example, I think changing too many players was the main reason Man City melted and lost against Real Madrid in CL Semifinal this year.
His lack of in game tactical nous is the poorest I have ever seen
Substitutions are made from 60th minute Mr Southgate does on the 85 minute I cannot understand the logic. Besides he takes out Saka whi was causing problems and bring on
Sterling...( who flew out and in Qatar)
Facts
Yeah we played well but sometimes it’s just not your night.

I think Saka was struggling and had to be taken off, but I don't think Sterling was the answer.
I think it is easy to judge after the fact and for the most part I think he did it alright, but I would say that subbing Saka was a mistake. He was causing so many issues.
England dealt with Mbappe, France could not deal with Saka even with the refs help, Gareth subs Saka, go figure

I don't understand these football media. Harry Kane missed the penalty not the manager.
Because england is football country. The epl is world most watched league. So there is many media reporting football. Come to malaysia , no people care about football😂
Sure, because there's no media pressure in France for the team to win...

Yeah our pressing was pretty awful. Didn’t make enough tackles or tactical fouls. Meanwhile France kicked us every opportunity they got.
The fact that you still think Bellingham was the best player on the pitch, i.e. over Griezmann who had 2 assists in the game, one of them a beautiful cross, is a typical example of how English journalists/commentators most often overhype their players and underrate others. True. Kane didn’t lift it over the keeper .. insisted on using his right foot..
Another time quite early on a player shied from taking an open shot on edge of their area..

@@patinho5589 There was no foul on Saka. The English used to mock Italians for supposedly diving and falling at first touch yet they are the master at that.

It’s not coming home 😢
I think Southgate will end up as a Director of Football rather than a manager. I see his strengths more in that area.
Griezman was outstanding yesterday 👏🏿 by far the best player on the pitch then Jude.
Benching Rashford, Maddison and Grealish? Against France, who are not known for their great defense? Playing Henderson? It was written on the walls before the game even started. I'm even shocked they put up the fight until the end.
Henderson played well. He and saka was the main threat in that right side of the field
Its all on Southgate. He falls short whenever we've faced half decent opposition.
He needs to go. He's had 3 tournaments now give someonelse an opportunity to lead this fantastic crop of players
Southgate not playing rashford cost us. Simple as that
Every other country supporters if you ask they all say rashford is our most feared player. Rashford in the form he's in and with the confidence he has you have to be bonkers not to start him
Reactive not proactive I agree. The subs should have been made after Girouds first chance. Subs came too late.
After Giroud's first chance it was a corner. After a corner it was the goal. You never see managers bring on players right before defending a corner.
There was a period in the game where it was flat for about 15-20 minutes second half. He should have made changes then. From 45 minutes I was saying he’s gotta swap Henderson for Phillips too which he didn’t do. Phillips can spray a ball.
England were the better team and are really unfortunate to be going home. So the tactics employed by Southgate this tournament have been spot on in my opinion compared to other tournaments. Only one thing I will say yesterday I thought the subs didn’t work out he shouldn’t of took off saka and should of brought on rashford a little earlier. But hindsight is a beautiful thing.
Saying all of that it’s probably time for Gareth to move on now thanks for the nearly memories mate and see you managing in the championship in a few years
Truly agree with you. Why has Trend Arnold come on as a substitute when he is a key full back fir Liverpool.
Congratulations to england on winning against Iran Wales and Senegal. Progress my friends 😭😭
just the usa and france was the challenge
I hope he upgrades counter press. All of the puzzles are almost set. Off the ball movement should also be next. You just can’t stand still
Blaming centrebacks 4 goal 1 is wrong, maybe Henderson cos he wasn't alert
I don’t think Harry Kane should’ve started in front of Rashford tbh
France bribed the referee or Referee had immense hate for England, , Atleast 3 free kicks at dangerous positions near the box not given, a penalty not given, atleast 2 red cards not given , grizemann definitely deserved two yellow cards he fouled at crucial English advantage positions at least 7 to 8 times. FIFA needs to investigate the Referee
Mbappe Messi is what they want. PSG connection
The back 4 wasn’t the issue, the starting line up was correct, and we controlled long periods of the game, it’s just lack of game management and making changes as the game progressed, at 60 mins Hendo was done and needed changing.
I’m so happy England got packed up…. That tchouemeni strike came outta nowhere 💥
Yes -- it's the kind of shocker that makes the game so exhilarating . . .
France scoring amazing goals? Yeah, what a shocker!!
“How would Mourinho approach that game? How would Antonio Conte approach that game” are we in the late 2000s? 😂😂😂😂
Tactics? 😆
A coach who cannot even win the nations league (equivalent of carabao cup) in my opinion, with all that talent at his disposal, I simply not good enough. Don't try to sugar coat it
