    If you want to show a stork getting rid of younger nestlings, try showing it next time. You skipped the stork getting rid of both undersized birds.

    We will probably never be able to understand nature properly. They live in Makov in a sheltered bubble with food in abundance and - nevertheless it happens again and again. Marushka also had a tendency to do so. We have to accept it even when the heart is heavy. Thank you dear Judith for sharing.🙁💔

      Tonicka's behaviour also puzzles me. Last year there was the storklet whose leg muscles were developing backwards and he couldn't get up. But nothing happened to him until Pan Libor took him to the vet for an unsuccessful surgery that led to euthanisia. And this year, the smallest yet healthy storklet gets pecked to death in what I consider a moment of rage. She was preening them all rather harshly and when she got to the little one, she suddenly went into high gear. She didn't throw him out of the nest. Rather, he tried to escape and that seemed to make her even angrier. Unfortunately, cruelty is also a human trait. Civil wars. Religious persecution. Ethnic cleansing. Genocides. Bullying. And on it goes. I guess it's the dark side of any specie's makeup. And yet, there is a compassionate side to most of us and that's what counts. Have a pleasant sunny day my dear Marion. It's always such a pleasure when you visit and leave a comment. 😊🍁💐🌞🥂

      It is indeed difficult to understand how a parent would kill a weaker storklet when it is living in a rescue station with plenty of food available. I guess that instinctually it simply made the same decision as it would have if living in the wild. Still, there appears to be an element of cruelty in this scene. As you say, sometimes it's hard to understand the workings of Mother Nature. Thanks for your visit and comment.😊🍁💐🌞

      The two smallest chicks were taken away. Pan Libor always removes two so that the injured one has a companion. In this case, the tiniest one died of its injuries and the older one is in the aviary for special feedings. I don't know if they will return it to the nest or raise it separately. I think he may have been afraid the second one was also going to be attacked. Apparently black storks are very different from white storks. They're extremely shy and sensitive. And they nest in forests or wooded areas. Unlike white storks who will nest in very public areas. I believe Tonicka acted out of cruelty as there is an abundance of food and they don't even need to hunt for it. And last year, she had one storklet who was heavily handicapped and she never tried to eliminate it. It was removed for surgery which was unsuccessful and it was euthanized. Humans can also be pretty cruel too, most unfortunately. On that cheerful thought, I look forward to viewing today's vlog on your channel a little later on. Have a pleasant evening, George.😊🍁💐🌞

    Thank you dear Judith for your answer. Yes, we are often stunned next to such situations, wondering why ... Sometimes we just can't find a reason. Sometimes it's a lot of guesswork. In the case of storks there are several "reasons" for this. First, unfortunately, you have to live with the fact that the species is secured with two healthy storks per year and nest. The other chicks are a kind of "insurance" in case something happens to the chicks. Sometimes there was a lack of food. A stork child has to go to save the others. Unfortunately, it mostly hits the youngest chick or a chick that is already weakened. Other factors are said to be the excessive demands of raising the chicks and the stress caused by unfamiliar situations. Another "suspicion" is that the storks are doing some kind of "neurological examination" on their children. The stork nudge the children and see exactly how they react. Unfortunately, if the chicks do not react the way they see fit, they will also be thrown out of the nest. Genetic defects, which we cannot recognize at first glance, unfortunately also lead to the chicks being shed. A small genetic defect occurs every year in a nest that I observe. When the storks in this nest have reached a certain age, one parent begins to peck one stork child after the other until it is bleeding profusely, usually between the wings. Unfortunately, the stork doesn't stop until the chick slowly dies from its blood loss and injuries. In my opinion, it is behavior that makes it clear that the stork is bothered by something about the chick that it is trying to get rid of. He does not reject the chick entirely, but rejects the genetic defect. So every year I watch the nest at the exact time it happens and call the owner immediately when it starts. Then he takes the children out of the nest one by one to save it. They are then nursed to health and passed on to other parents who adopt and raise the children without any problems, alongside their own children. These new parents don't mind this small deficiency. Why this is so will remain a mystery. Just like us humans, animals are very different. As you have already explained so well, dear Judith. Nature is so diverse, exciting, very often puzzling, sometimes sad, beautiful fascinating and cruel at the same time. A big hug to you, dear Judith. It's good that there's you. Take good care of yourself, my friend.🍀🍁🥰

      @Butterfly-mt5ml 2 роки тому +5

      I really enjoyed your reply until you mentioned "saving" a Storklete that had a probable chance of a genetic issue. "Saving" these genetically defective birds can pass on that genetic defect to the defective birds future offspring, making said species genetically weaker as a whole and ultimately, making said species go extinct. The parents are rejecting it for a reason. I enjoy watching these wild birds and I hope, my children's children will be able to watch them too! Mother nature made these birds the way they are for a reason. God put the instincts into these birds on how to handle each offspring they reproduce. It's always best to leave nature to nature. Humans start messing with it and I guarantee we will screw it all up and they will no longer be existent.
      People need to stop thinking of the "right now" with these wild animals and think long term because they're NOT. Saving a defective animal isn't going to make any animal species prosper. They already have to fight us humans for space, food etc.. They HAVE TO BE at their peekest possible performance for survival and being defective is just putting off the inevitable.

    • @tomkyle1
      @tomkyle1 2 роки тому +4

      @@Butterfly-mt5ml I totally respect your opinion. Just in my opinion, people have to see it in a more differentiated way. Since humans rob animals of so much of their livelihood, in my opinion one has to intervene in individual cases and support the animals. People should think carefully about what is too much and where support is needed. It takes a lot of tact. Of course, it is best to preserve and restore their habitat. However, one often sees and experiences the opposite.
      As for the little stork, I want to mention that it was a bird that grew up in a stork park. Only the father refused him - the mother not. The surrogate family did not reject him either.
      It has a slightly narrower beak. You hardly notice it. This does not limit his life in any way. He behaves quite normally. What makes you sure that he will pass that small difference on to his possible offspring? There is also a genetic defect in my family. I did not inherit it. You have to decide on a case-by-case basis, that's my opinion. I will always save these storks because where they are, they are in good hands. All the best for you, Marion

    • @GarrisIiari
      @GarrisIiari Рік тому +3

      Terrific and detailed reply. A few points. It is interesting that storks almost never have more than 2 or so fledge per brood, so this outcome is almost pre-ordained. Also, the picked on chicks are almost always the youngest. I think it's less a genetic defect, than "why should I expend more time and food on you?" Now, I have seen some videos where if the picked on chick shows some spunk, and in response fights its way back to the group or, better yet, responds to mom's bullying by attacking its siblings, the mom's attack stops. So I do think this is a bit of a test to see if the youngest of the group has enough aggression or fighting spirit to be worth saving at that point in the process. That's why I think the "torturing" happens before the drop - To give the chick a chance to "prove itself," which sadly they rarely do...

      The baby that was attacked by its mother was removed as well as the next youngest storklet who needed extra feeding. The baby died of its wounds and the other storklet may end up being raised in an aviary with other injured storks. Storks will often eliminate the youngest stork when food is scarce but food is abundant in a rescue station. Last year, one of the storklets was born disabled and no action was taken by the parents to eliminate it. So this year, it was, in my opinion, an act of cruelty. What motivated it remains unclear. Hello Danielle. This chick was what we sometimes call 'the runt' of the family. Probably the last born and the slowest to develop. In the wild, there is no time for this. In this rescue centre, the weakest is often taken away and raised separately. That is what they do here normally but in the case of black storks, they do not like to separate them because they are very sensitive birds and a removal could create a shock to the whole family. This chick was removed but it died of its injuries, unfortunately. Thank you for your question. And have a pleasant weekend.😊🍁💐🌞

      Tonicka is not the greatest stork mother and there was no reason for this behaviour, in my opinion. The nest is located on a rescue station where there is plenty of food and the argument that she can detect neurological damage is not biologically convincing. Her behaviour is erratic at the best of times. I believe this was only the second time she had storklets as she and her partner have been living there for many storkless years. Thanks for your visit!😊🍁

    • @emi7912
      @emi7912 3 роки тому +1

      It’s an involuntary natural survival instinct probably, that animal parents might have regarding weak or sick offspring. Instinct tells the parent stork that a weak chick already has poor survival odds, plus the extra energy required to care for a weak chick threatens the healthy chicks survival. So a parent stork might kill or push a weak chick out of the nest in order to be able to turn it’s energy back toward care of the chicks with the best survival odds.

      Emi's explanation is compelling. In the wild and in difficult circumstances, the weakest is eliminated or if food sources are inadequate, even a healthy chick will be eliminated. However, this case is puzzling. Last year, there were four chicks. One of them died on its own, but it's a bit vague in my mind. The third one was born with some kind of a muscle defect. Basically, his muscles were wired the wrong way and he couldn't stand up on his legs. Yet neither T or T tried to eliminate him. He was removed from the nest by Pan Libor and taken to the vet for surgery but that didn't work and he was euthanized. So this year, in an environment of abundance, Tonicka, in my view, acted out of cruelty. She was over preening this chick and the poor little thing tried to escape. And that made things worse for him. She really came after him with a vengeance. And if you think about it, there is a lot of inexplicable cruelty in the human species. Ethnic cleansing, civil wars, generalized intolerance. We can be good at that too, most unfortunately. I thank you both for your thoughts, Baby Lou and Emi. I certainly appreciate it when someone takes the time to post their reflections. Have a pleasant evening and a wonderful day tomorrow.😊🍁💐🌞🐰🐱

    • @arcticwarbler9299

      It's quite an exhausting feat to feed and raise storklets so I guess they evaluate fairly early on which storklets are going to thrive and which are not as likely to survive. In this case, they are living in a rescue station where they do not need to hunt for food, so I am assuming that they still behave as if they were in the wild. Thanks for your visit and comment, Sherwin.😊🍁💐🌞

    I just wanted to say that the way that this storklet was being tossed around the way that it was, this was not preening.
    When preening storklets, they do it very gently with their beaks to every single one of them.
    This one looked like it was specifically singled out and she wasn’t just checking to see how big it was growing.
    She was definitely attempting something here.

    Its like it's instincts to nurture and preen are butting heads with its instincts to eliminate the weak for the greater good of the brood. The bird is probably having an existential crisis the whole time it's doing this.
